Re: user friendly turntables

2010-12-02 Thread Dane Trethowan
Well I'm not going to read a whole thread of email but the subject line
intrigues me, what has to be user friendly about a turntable? I've been using
them for nearly 40 years and in that time it hasn't caused me too much of a
strain to put the needle on the old long playing record so given all that why
can't people do that now.

And in any case, why buy a USB turntable? Most of the older models and a lot of
the newer models are far better than some of those USB cheap things I've seen,
plastic tone arms for one thing so really again, if you're serious about
putting record to computer then buy a proper turntable that plugs into an amp,
you can get preempts if you need them for your sound card and then? Well go
your hardest with your favorite audio sampling software.

So what am I missing here? User friendly turntables, next we'll be looking for
user-friendly light switches, user-friendly food plates and bowls etc.

Re: user friendly turntables

2010-12-02 Thread Peter Scanlon
Well for one thing its good to have a lever or button to lift the arm
automatically. Less chance of scratching.
But I agree, a proper turntable and amp will do it.
Also some of these new USB things might have touch pad buttons rather than
buttons and knobs.

Olympus recorders

2010-12-02 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

These Olympus recorders look very nice however I have one question which I've
not seen answered yet and I'm sure someone's tackled it here, can you use an
Olympus recorder to record from the line-out of say a tuner or something like
that?

The DM520 units are quite cheap and - assuming I can do line in recordings -
I'd be tempted to buy one.

Seemingly Olympus have named their machines differently for different

Anyway, armed with that knowledge, you may be able to dig further ... If

I hope this isn't considered off topic hhere. II've been pretty happy
with an airport express connected to my stereo streaming stereo music
from the web, Itunes etdf. But I'm about to get an apple tv, because of
the accessible netflicks and accessible dvd playing on the mac that I'd
like to stream, and I'd like to do it in 5.1 surround, so as to get
more of the home theater sound experience. But it seems like all the
modern receivers I've seen are so menu oriented that you really can't
operate them without sight, unless you have an amazing memory, that is,
which I don't. So I wonder if there are any receivers that can be
operated by a blind person, more than just turning it on and off, of
course. I'm talking switching between various modes and inputs.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mary

Hi!

These Olympus recorders look very nice however I have one question which
I've not seen answered yet and I'm sure someone's tackled it here, can
you use an Olympus recorder to record from the line-out of say a tuner
or something like that?

The DM520 units are quite cheap and - assuming I can do line in
recordings - I'd be tempted to buy one.

2010-12-02 Thread Howard Traxler
Supposedly, there is a way to turn off the AVC and manuallly control the
input level. In that case it should work fine. So far, I haven't figured
out how. I did, however, record from the speaker output of my Drake R-4C
ham reeceiver and it wasn't bad. AVC was turned on and the input
sensitivity was as low as it would go. There was some pumping on the
recording, but not bad.

The 520 has manual volume which you can choose in I think the record
settings. My old DS50 just had three automatic choices, however.

can't people do that now.

Probably for organisational purposes rather than any other reason, be assured!
I'm only thinking along the lines of Olympus because of the price one can get

RE: introduction to internet broadcasting

2010-12-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't understand. Why would you think anyone doesn't want you to write an
introduction to internet broadcasting? I never saw any such sentiment on the
list. Did you get some messages off list? If you did, my advice would be to
ignore them. Remember that the opinions of one or two people don't
constitute the opinion of the whole list or community. Also, just because
Jonathan and friends wrote a similar introduction doesn't mean you can't
provide one as well. I'm sure there's always something to add or a different
way of approaching things.

that should be a common sure cartridge like the M-95-ED.. I'll bet you can
get a replacement Electrovoice stylus for it. I used to have both of them.
the only thing is to find stores that sell phonograph needles these days.

Well I'm not going to read a whole thread of email but the subject line
intrigues me, what has to be user friendly about a turntable? I've been
using them for nearly 40 years and in that time it hasn't caused me too
much

of a strain to put the needle on the old long playing record so given all
that why can't people do that now.

And in any case, why buy a USB turntable? Most of the older models and a
lot
of the newer models are far better than some of those USB cheap things
I've

seen, plastic tone arms for one thing so really again, if you're serious
about putting record to computer then buy a proper turntable that plugs
into
an amp, you can get preempts if you need them for your sound card and
then?

Well go your hardest with your favorite audio sampling software.

So what am I missing here? User friendly turntables, next we'll be looking
for user-friendly light switches, user-friendly food plates and bowls etc.
