2011-11-25 Thread tickpub
Hi back about cassett player. This is one I found at Frys. It is called a
Grace-USB with some numbers? They also sell the grace device for records.
This one has a few things on it but no speed adjustment as far as I know.
It has a tone recording knob that I have not figured out yet but I think
it adjusts the noises but not the speed. I am blind and have not yet read
the manual that tells all. But have transfered files and it does its job.
But my sound adjustments seem to be in my com or in my programs so far.
That is it!

Re: Burning Cds Troubles!

2011-11-25 Thread Les Gordon
hello, your pushing the limit when you use 702mb of space for a cd. the
space on a cd can vary by just a little, also the leadout takes up space
too. you could try a restart, but the safest point would be keeping it to
700mb at the most. if you have specific software you might be able to
overburn the cds but thats not stable either.
if restart doesnt fix the problem try a different software package to burn.
i burn copy and edit cds and dvds for my work everyday, so i can help you
resolve your problem.

Hi.
tried to burn a cd using express burn and windows explorer.
but cannot burn.
i have a cd-r, not formatted, 702 mb disk.
and when i try to burn in express burn, says it is trying to write 707 mb,
when i have 702 mb, just checked.

now, windows explorer is having a fit.
not liking to burn.
saying there is not enough space.
and all my cds are 702, and have had no problems burning up until now.
would a shutdown and restart, fix this problem.
this is pissing me off real bad.
tried four or five or nine times.
was able to burn the last cd, but had two tracks, by the same artist.
and do not like to have the same artist, more then once.
on the cd.
so help me out.
i could try it in windows media player, but a more complex process to
burn.

please help me out.
this is giving me a headache.
Marvin.

ps: i have a sony dvd-rom burner, that i purchased about three months ago.
and it works fine.
have been able to burn cds, in the past, and one earlier today but now, it
is not letting me burn cds.
did try deleting about four or five tracks, but did not make any
difference.

so are the cds stuffed?
throw them out and purchase a whole lot of other blank cds, and maybe 800
mb.

Just wondering: do these "tape decks" like you all are speaking of have any
kind of pitch control" on them? I ask because, as some of you no doubt have
discovered, not all tape decks are created equal when it comes to speed! So
if I was to get one of these USB tape decks, I fear that it may play my
cassettes either too slow or too fast!

Hi back and thanks, the Grace USB ??? is a cassette to PC player. It is a
special player that allows you to play cassets and they are then
transfered into your com by a USB port. This device comes with Audacity
as the program to use for file editing. It also allows you to store the
files as MP3 files and this is my main effort as of now.

Re: Asus Netbook and audio settings

2011-11-25 Thread tickpub
Hi, this might be similiar in cause? I am running Audacity with a new
casset to PC device. Now when I plug in my casset Grace device it shuts
down or takes over all sound in my com. I do recored by hitting R and
after the tape runs through, I then unplug the USB cassett recorder from
com and my sound goes back on. I then save the cut or file. So is there a
way around this or what is making the device shut off my sound? This
would be nice if you or someone out there could assist in fixing this.
Take care and thanks a ton!

nothing. Very odd. So, if you have any other tricks up your sleeve, lay 'em on

An Audacity Problem

2011-11-25 Thread Dave Trevino
Hi everybody,

I'm a new kid on the block.

I've downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 hoping for a free usable multitrack recording
program. I've run the output from a Zoom H D8 to the line_in jack of my sound
card and am bringing a mike through the H d8. . My single track recording
efforts went okay, but when I started adding tracks on the computer, suddenly
the production sounded like it was being played through three or four feet of
galvanized pipe. Is it a phasing problem? Is there a setting I need to
change? Would a later version of the program help[? Thanks for any advice.

I assume the Turtle Beach card is connected via USB. If you plug it in while
the computer is already running, it will probably take
over all audio functions. What you need to do is either plug it in before you
boot or alternatively reboot after plugging it in.
If you are doing this and still have the problem, please let me know and I'll
see what else I can suggest.

Subject: More Computer Speakers

Hi folks!

About a fortnight ago I wrote to the list discussing the new Altec Lansing
Expressions Plus speaker system I'd bought then, I'm extremely happy with
it.

I had thought when I bought this system that the Expressions Plus was the
top of the line 2.1 speaker system model Altec Lansing manufactured but I
was wrong.

Yep, I could have taken the speakers back from where I bought them but as
my one of my other sets was wearing out anyway it made sense for me to
replace that with the expressions Plus and buy the new Altec Lansing
Expressions Ultra system for my main computer system in the back room.

The Expressions Ultra is the top of the line 2.1 speaker system Altec
Lansing make at the moment and boy! what a monster we're talking about
here.

The system consists of 4 components, 2 2-way speakers that can sit on a
desk, a small control panel that sits on the desk beside you and a monster
sub-woofer that looks more like a PC tower case, you can sit this in a
shelf, on the floor etc.

5 separate digital amplifiers drive this system with 200 wats total power,
most of which is used by the sub-woofer to shake the floor or whatever.

If considering this system then you'll need to devote a little time to the
unpacking, Altec Lansing in my view ought to win an ward for environmental
vandals, I've never seen so much plastic tape, bag, foam and other rubbish
in a box.

Once everything was unpacked and accounted for it was time to wire and
then power up.

Wiring up is simple enough, each of the speakers and control panel plug
into sockets via cables on the sub-woofer, it appears that all the plugs
are different so their's no chance of plugging the wrong speaker into the
wrong socket, plugging the control panel into one of the speaker sockets
etc.

So upon turning the system on I heard sweet sweet sound so time to control
the system with the control panel to hear just what the system offered my
ears.

The panel has 3 buttons and a rotary know, when this is turned as a volume
knob it increases or decreases the volume and here's where things become
interesting. If you turn the knob slightly then volume increases or
decreases gradually, turn the knob a little more then the rate of volume
adjustment increases so be prepared for a few shocks.

1 button on the panel changes the knob for volume adjustment to bass
adjustment, another changes from volume to treble adjustment and the small
button in the middle of the panel turns the system on and off - there's a
main power switch on the back of the sub-woofer which turns everything
off.

There are 2 sockets on the side of the panel, one for line in and the
other for headphones which I've found terribly convenient.

I have the 2 speaker units on my desktop shelf and their they stand
proudly, Altec Lansing have done a good job with the design of these
units, many speakers I've seen are extremely flimsy and can easily be
knocked over but not these, they stand on an angle held by 2 rubber feet
at the front and the protrusion at the rear.

No doubt about it, these are the absolute best I've heard in the class of
a 2.1 channel system and I wonder what a better 2.1 channel system could
give the ears that this one couldn't. As far as I've been able to
determine most of the spectrum is easily heard, crisp highs, very nice mid
range and earth shattering low.

I did wonder why 200 watts for a speaker package which you're pretty much
sitting right in front of? Well I don't wonder any more, when I'm playing
games with things exploding all around me I just sit and enjoy the noise
or when listening to my favourite music I sit and listen for as long as I
can, these speakers give total enjoyment to my ears.

Re: Volume; Need some help here with Audacity thanks!

2011-11-25 Thread David Bailes
Hi,
assuming that the cassette to pc device uses a usb connection, and that you're
using windows xp, then audacity probably can't control the recording level from
within the program. However, you can adjust the recording level by adjusting
the windows recording level of the device:
1. In the Control Panel, open the Sound and Audio Devices Properties dialog.
2. Move to the Audio page of this dialog, where there's a Sound recording
default device combo box. Select the device in this combo box, and then Tab to
the next control which is a Volume button, and press it.
3. A dialog opens, which contains a volume slider for the device.

David.

Hello All, need some help here with Audacity?
Would appreciate any help you can lend.
Ok, I am blind and now recording  cassettes to my PC using Audacity. I
bought the Grace cassette to PC device and now learning how to use it. My
major problem for now is that after copying a file over and saving it as
an MP3 file, it plays back very quiet barely enough to hear it. How do I
set Audacity to give me the same sound on each recording? Is there a
certain setting or what? I do not know what half of these words or
settings even mean. Is there a simple way of increasing the sound while
or before recording?

I have many of my own stories recorded on tape and read by my wife and
they are ok on the tape but very low on the playback in my media player.
I use the JAWS speech program to get around and it does ok for my basic
use.
Is there a button or a menu that I can go to in order to increase the
volume before recording or while recording or just before saving the
file?
Any help out there?
Thanks
