Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay, finally had a chance to play with the Voice Dream App and all I can say
is the App is aptly named, its a "Dream', easily the best reading tool I've
ever used whether that be Hardware or Software so the gentleman who questioned
my wisdom when I suggested I might buy a victor Reader Stream or another device
is well up with the times .

Certainly one of those "I'll do it from my iPhone" kind of guys yes, for me the
Victor Reader Stream purchase would just be wasting a whole heap of money,
another list member put forward this view quite some time ago, long before I
had a chance to play with Voice Dream.

Now before others say I'm not seeing the full picture? Well I believe I am, I
know there are others that don't have iPhones however the Victor Reader Stream
itself - in Australia at any rate - is far from a cheap item at over $400.

RE: Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I use Voice Dream quite often. However, I still depend on my VR Stream if I
am away for hours at a time because I am not interested in spending the
required cash on a juice box in order to replace my existing iPhone case.
Therefore, I still need a source other than my phone for extended hours of
reading in order to keep my phone available for calling a cab to go home at
the end of the day. Voice Dream is great though in many cases especially
when I am home and using WiFi and Drop Box.

If you are going to be doing that much listening on your iPhone I hope you
have a backup battery. That is one good thing about having a separate book
reader. You don't run out of battery when you need to make a call.

Re: Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yep absolutely right and that was one of the main reasons I was looking at the
Stream.

External battery solutions thankfully are a lot less expensive than a Victor
Reader Stream I have some 1MHA USB battery packs here so - If I need more
power - I just put one of those into my pocket and plug into the iPhone if
required.

I also have a cigarette to USB port adapter which I use when travelling in a
car, GPS takes up a whole heap of power too!

hi,
well Victor streem 2 or whatever they prefer to call it is a real charm.
You can listen to radio, look up stuff on the net, and a whole lot more, so
comparing it to a simple iphone app isn't comprehensive.

Again, I'm not discussing this to get into an argument about the virtues of a
Victor Reader Stream, if you don't have an iPhone then all well and good, but
if you have an iPhone etc then would you really want to spend $400 for much of
what you have already?

Re: Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread Brian Olesen

Hi Dane,
Well you can't compare apples and oranges.
A physical hardware unit whith lots of real keys, and various good voices to
choose from, lots of navigation features and such can't be compared to an
app. Or at least only partially.
But I must admit it's a real nice app. I have both a Victor Streem 2 and an
iPhone 5S. I must say that I am really happy with both units as they both
serve a purpose.

Best regards
Brian

Again, I'm not discussing this to get into an argument about the virtues of
a Victor Reader Stream, if you don't have an iPhone then all well and good,
but if you have an iPhone etc then would you really want to spend $400 for
much of what you have already?

Certainly one of those "I'll do it from my iPhone" kind of guys yes, for
me the Victor Reader Stream purchase would just be wasting a whole heap of
money, another list member put forward this view quite some time ago, long
before I had a chance to play with Voice Dream.

Now before others say I'm not seeing the full picture? Well I believe I
am, I know there are others that don't have iPhones however the Victor
Reader Stream itself - in Australia at any rate - is far from a cheap item
at over $400.

Re: Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread Aidan
Yes, I got also an IPhone and five other players. They all help me and
I will never use the IPhone primary for my reading or music needs. The
apple system is not good enough for that and besides, its much easyer
for example to activate the sleep timer or just to quickly skip to the
next radio station on the stream or other player than it would be to
do on the IPhone. There are so much disadvantages to use a phone for
all of this exclusively that I hate it, but yes voicedream is a good
app. I rather get an IPad mini to help out where the IPhone cannot
always do enough.

I love the stream. It has real buttons, rather than touch screen, I wish

actually you don't need to since you can read talking books with the bard

Voice Dream Reader

2014-04-12 Thread Elizabeth
Do you know if it is possible to read .brf files with Voice Dream
Reader an iPhone and a braille display?

Thanks.

Elizabeth

Audio Sample Of Tecsun PL880 AM From Dane

2014-04-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
Now that I well and truly have this radio I thought it time to make a couple of
audio samples myself, this one comes from ABC News Radio and I recorded it
using my iPhone, my Zoom H! recorder has developed a fault so I've ordered
another.

Note the very nice clarity and wide AM band, its a real pleasure to listen to
this radio on AM even though its not quite as sensitive nor selective on AM as
some of my other sets are.

If link doesn't work the first time then try again in a few minutes, file may
still be uploading to Dropbox.

Re: Voice Dream Reader

2014-04-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
If Voice Dream supports this format then yep! read to your hearts content on a
Braille display, I don't personally know whether Voice Dream does support this
format as I've not tried it.

2014-04-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
I should also point out that the review was conducted quite some time ago and
the Voice Dream App has been updated several times since that review was
written.

Re: Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread Dane Trethowan
I'm interested when you say "Easier" as its really subjective because there are
so many ways to do things on an iPhone, I suggest perhaps that you download the
demo of Voce Dream and try it for yourself before saying that tasks are easier
to perform on one device than another.

I use the oOtunes App for radio stations - oOtunes is the same system used by
the Victor Reader Stream as it happens - and skipping between radio stations is
about as logical as it gets, press the previous or the next buttons, select a
station from your favourites list, search for or browse stations, press stop to
stop or pause to pause and continue recording depending on your settings, shake
to stop or start etc.

RE: Victor reader Stream, Fello List Member Was Absolutely On The Ball

2014-04-12 Thread André van Deventer
Reality is that some folks may not have the money to waste on aal kinds of
gadgets. They may want one thing that can do as much as possible for them.

Yes, I got also an IPhone and five other players. They all help me and I
will never use the IPhone primary for my reading or music needs. The apple
system is not good enough for that and besides, its much easyer for example
to activate the sleep timer or just to quickly skip to the next radio
station on the stream or other player than it would be to do on the IPhone.
There are so much disadvantages to use a phone for all of this exclusively
that I hate it, but yes voicedream is a good app. I rather get an IPad mini
to help out where the IPhone cannot always do enough.

I can say is the App is aptly named, its a "Dream', easily the best
reading tool I've ever used whether that be Hardware or Software so
the gentleman who questioned my wisdom when I suggested I might buy
 a victor Reader Stream

 or
another device is well up with the times .
