Re: WinMx

2004-11-01 Thread Brian Lewis
I tried version 3.53 and didn't find it any less accessible. I went back to
3.31 because quickmx is 3.31 spacific and I wanted to be able to use that
program. My understanding is that the main improvements in the newer
version were in the chat function, which I haven't found to be accessible
regardless of what version is being used.

Hi Kris.
I was torn too, but I decided to go with 3.31 and GLAD that I did. I
downloaded the scripts for 3.30, and all is working well.

Hi all,
Has anyone used the latest version of WinMx, 3.53? I believe someone on
this list mentioned that it was not as accessable as previous versions.
I looked at their website and did not find that you can download previous
versions, so I was undecided whether to go ahead with the latest release
or
not.
Any advice?

Re: Winamp 5.05 VS Real Player 10+

2004-09-27 Thread Brian Lewis
In your case, you should go into Winamp's preferences and do not hit the
"select All" button. You should check what you want Winamp to play and
uncheck what you want Real to play. I guess they're both the same in that
they both want to play everything, but Winamp has that Select All button,
and you don't want that.

Subject: Winamp 5.05 VS Real Player 10+

Hello List!

Recently I downloaded and installed the new Winamp 5.05 Player, following a
review of the program by Dave Williams on ACB Radio. I should say that, at
the same time, I have the latest Real Player 10player on my system as well.

Now, I usually have Real Player play my CD's, MP3 files, Wave Files, and
radio stations. Winamp, I discovered, enjoys playing these programs as
well.

As soon as I installed Winamp, it took over my audio system and plays
everything for me, even though I have Real Player set to play most of these
types of music.

I also have Windows Media Player 9 Series on my system, but it does not work
like Winamp.

I like Real Player to play things such as Main Menu and other such programs
because I can go back and forth easier. I like different programs for
different things to be played (Windows Media Player for ACB Radio; Real
Player for MP3, Wav, and songs stored on my hard drive).

My question to you guys is "How do I keep Winamp from taking over all of my
system and playing everything? Even when I open up Real Player and set
preferences to play certain files, Winamp ignores this and plays things
anyway."

I like Winamp because of its radio broadcasting features and "sometimes
relative ease of use," but I want it to play what and when I want it to
play. Is there a way to make these players behave and play what we tell
them to play? I'd like to know how this is done.

Thanks again for your help.

Sincerely,

James Robinson

Re: nfl field pass problem.

2004-09-13 Thread Brian Lewis
Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to afford mlbtv, and the tv
descriptions are not nearly as good as the radio descriptions. I wonder
what would happen if a bunch of us started complaining to mlb.com and
threatened not to renew next year if they didn't improve their quality.
Maybe we should all call their toll-free number, which if I remember
correctly is 866-800-1275.

I was really amazed with NFL Field Pass today. Last year the audio was not
as good as mlb.com. And that's a real insult, believe me. But today, I
have listened to some of the Steelers feed and Some of the Atlanta feed and
both were just excelent. Of course, last year I was on dialup and this year
I have broadband. I wonder if that would make that much difference in the
audio quality. Maybe mlb.com should take some lessons because their audio
quality is still very bad. I don't know if i'm even going to pay for it
again next year if they don't do some improving.

Re: the Aviva

2004-08-25 Thread Brian Lewis
The last news I heard was this summer at the ACB convention. They said they
were working on another one called the Iris. It's a smaller unit that is
spacifically aimed at the internet radio market for those who don't have
computers or just want to get internet radio stations more easily and
quickly. It's a nice unit and it's about half the price of the aviva. By
the way, they, at that time, had not scrapped the Aviva. They just delayed
it a bit so they could concentrate on getting Iris out first. Hopefully
we'll see it soon.

Re: mlb and dropout

2004-08-18 Thread Brian Lewis
I'm not a big fan of Windows Media player, but it does seem to work better
than Real for this particular application. The simplest way to set it,
probably, is to delete the mlb cookie and start again. You'll have to
re-enter your email address, but when you bring up a game it'll go into
preferences. I use Window-Eyes, and it gives me preferences for the player.
I haven't set it in a while, but I think WMP is the first one and Real is
the second. It doesn't say. All it says is that they are radio buttons
without saying what the buttons are. And then be sure to save the settings
and you should be fine. I wish they would run their broadcasts at more than
12kb per second, though. I know they can do better than that. I don't
guess they will until a lot of people complain about it.

Re: Coppying CD's with Nero

2004-08-13 Thread Brian Lewis
If you only have 1 drive, then you will have to do it to the hard drive
first then burn. I just got a second drive and I think you can designate a
source drive and a destination drive. If you have 2 drives and 1 doesn't
work, you'll do a lot better by getting a 2nd drive and getting someone to
install it. They're really cheap these days. I replaced my cdrom drive,
which didn't work anymore, with a combo drive for $48. I got this one at a
computer show, but I've seen them online for very close to the same price,
so if you can, just get it fixed and don't worry about making an image on
the hard drive and then burning it from that.

Re: quickmx

2004-08-10 Thread Brian Lewis
That happened to me, too. I do think that version 1.2.3 is the latest and
it only works with Winmx version 3.31 . If you read the quickmx.txt, they
promise faithfully to have a new version of quickmx about a week after a new
version of Winmx comes out, but we know better than that, don't we?

Is the latest version 1.2.3? I went to the home page and it said that it
had bug fixes, but it didn't say which version of winmx it would work best
with. When I tried to send them an email I got a message back saying their
account was inactive.

Re: problem with QuickMx

2004-08-10 Thread Brian Lewis
Don't worry about auto-find in Winmx. Quickmx will change it anyway since
it's always searching. What you may want to do is go to your sys-tray and
bring up quickmx. Then get to your context menu. You'll find things like
"stop using quickmx" and some other things including an auto-find there.
Set that one to 10, which is the highest setting. This will tell quickmx to
do 10 searches at a time, and if you have some files waiting, it should find
them and download them if there's anybody online who has them. If you do
have any incomplete files, be sure to go to the Transfers window and click
the "Load Incomplete" button. That tells Winmx that you want to finish the
incomplete files, and then quickmx will help winmx to find them if they're
available. Just be aware that it can take a while. I've been known to
leave it online for hours with no results at all, then go to bed leaving it
online all night and find several completed files in the morning. Of course
if your internet connection costs you per hour, you definitely don't want to
do that. Hope this helps!

Hi all!
I downloaded and ran the quickmx.exe program. But now winmx constantly says
"finding sources" and doesn't seem to be downloading. I have auto find
sources set to 15 m and auto enter queue set to 100. Should I adjust
anything?

Re: QUICK MX

2004-08-10 Thread Brian Lewis
You don't really install it. You unzip it into the folder where you want it
and just run the quickmx program. There's a couple of text files and a .dll
file and the program file itself. I suggest starting Winmx first and then
running quickmx. Quickmx will start Winmx, but I've heard of problems if
you do it that way. I've never tried it myself, but my understanding is
that if you start quickmx first it'll slow your system down. I have no idea
why that is.

Once you're in quickmx, go to your context menu and check that auto-find
setting. I think it defaults to ten. If so, just leave it there. If it's
on something lower than ten, change it to ten.

Re: QUICK MX

2004-08-10 Thread Brian Lewis
Yes, I think it is. I know it definitely improves my downloads. First,
it's continuously searching for files. Second, it can do up to ten searches
at a time, and between the two things, you can get a lot more downloads.
One thing, though, when you first start, be sure to go to the Transfers
window and click the "Load Incomplete" button. This makes sure that Winmx
knows that you still want to finish all those downloads that didn't finish
before. Once you hit that Load Incomplete button, Winmx and Quickmx will
start searching for those incompletes and finish them if they are found.

Re: QUICK MX

2004-08-09 Thread Brian Lewis
It never says so in the documentation file, but I'm about 95 percent sure
that that auto find in quickmx's menu is to tell it how many searches to
perform at once, not to tell it how often to search. It does say that
quickmx is continuously searching, so there's no need to tell it how often
to search. I went and reduced that number to 1 and my downloads pretty much
dried up, so I changed back to 10.

2004-08-01 Thread Brian Lewis
Just go ahead and install it. It should save all your settings. I would
suggest, though, that you save the original executable file of the version
you're using. Nothing is absolutely certain in computers, so if something
does go wrong, you should have that executable if you have to go back. But
that really shouldn't be necessary.

Re: Winamp 5.04 is now Available

2004-07-31 Thread Brian Lewis
This is correct. There's really not much difference at all for the normal
stuff that you use Winamp for, but there is a serious difference if you want
to use it to rip cds. The free version will rip, but only at 2x. It
doesn't matter how fast your pc is or how fast your burner is. 2x is all
you'll get. The pro version, on the other hand, will rip as fast as your
burner will go. It's also not a bad idea to go ahead and get the pro
version because of all the work they put into it. As far as I'm concerned,
Winamp is the best player bar none, and they really put a lot in the free
version and the only thing they cripple is the cd ripper, and I don't think
most people use it for that anyway. And for 15 bucks, you get a good
ripper, too. I'm seriously considering getting the pro just to say Thank
You for such a good product, and another thing is that when a new version
comes out, all you have to do is install it over the old one, and your new
version is a registered pro version if you've paid the 15 bucks.
