RE: Roxio5 and CD image files

2005-05-24 Thread Hamish Mackenzie
Talk about going all around the houses. Just open up EZ creator and
select either a music or data cd and then select the tracks from within
the ap as mentioned below or cut and paste them into the track list and
then go to the file menu having put a blank cd in the drive and enter on
record. There are a few settings that can be tweaked in here and then
you have your cd. No need for the two steps as below. If you really
want to keep an image of it it offers you that option once the cd is
burned.

Subject: Re: Roxio5 and CD image files

Here's how to do it in version 4.2. Maybe this will work for your
friend. This is from the jfwlite.com site.

Preparation:
1. Close all files running in the systems tray that you do not need,
especially virus checkers.
2. Create a new folder on your hard drive, if you don't know how see
below.
3. Start your windows explorer program.
4. You will be positioned on the line just below the c hard drive
line.
Hit alt+f and enter on the first item. Hit enter on folder which is
the first item. You will be in a edit field enter the name of the folder
you wish to create (I used cdmusic) and hit enter.
5. Return to the desktop.

Begin create CD procedure.
1. Do not put a blank CD into your CD writer until instructed.
2. Hit insert+f11 (system tray) and arrow down to adaptec create cd
and
hit enter.
3. The first item will be audio sub menu hit enter.
4. The first item on the next screen will be audio cd hit enter on it.
5. This will bring up a screen Untitled easy Cd creator and you will
be positioned on the c drive, in the tree view, right arrow to open.
6. Arrow down to program files (I type pro and it goes there) right
arrow to open.
7. Arrow down to napster (I type n to get there) right arrow to
open.
8. Arrow down to music (I type m to get there) and hit tab to open
the list.
9. Arrow down to the first title you wish to select and hit the space
bar to select, now you may hold down the control key and arrow down to
the next title you wish to select and hit space bar to select. I wanted
all 21 titles in my music folder, so I hit ctrl+a to select all.
10. Hit alt+e (for edit) and arrow down to add selected (you may hit
s
to go directly).
11. Tab, this will bring up a edit field cd title (this is an optional
entery).
12. Tab again this will bring up Artist name (this is optional).
13. Tab again this will put you in cd layout, here titles will be
arranged alphabetically by artist then by title, you can cut and paste
your titles so as to arrange the order you want the songs on your CD.
14. Now that you have your music arranged in the order you would like it
to appear on the CD, hit alt+f (for file), arrow down to create CD
image
and hit enter. This will bring up a edit box for file name, put in
your path and file name, (I used c:\cdmusic\various).
15. Tab, this puts you in file type, this is OK as is, proceed to the
next step.
16. Tab, this places you on the save button, hit enter.
17. Now the create CD image has began, wait a couple minutes then
route your jaws to PC cursor, arrow up 3 lines, (I set my screen echo
to none), here you can follow the progress of the image creation. When
the creation phase is completed you will be positioned on the OK, hit
enter.
18. You are now returned to the untitled Easy CD menu screen.
19. You are now ready to burn the CD from the image, place a blank CD in
the CD writer and close the drawer.
20. Hit alt+F (for file) arrow down to Create CD from CD image and
hit enter, you will be in a edit box for file name, type in the path
and file name you created in the previous phase (I used
c:\cdmusic\various, this will open the file and begin creating the CD.
With your jaws cursor you can follow the progress, this will not take
as long as the previous phase.
When this phase is completed you will have to locate the OK and left
click on it to begin to close the process.

Hi, this is Steve. I am trying to help a friend who has Roxio 5 and
wants to create an image file. I have Roxio 6, and use Creator Classic
which I understand, so my options are not the same. It all sounds
unfamiliar to me, thinking it would be

similar. Also, I want to be sure the CDDB option is working.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi Chris

Not sure if you will be able to access it or not but that option is
usually in the language options for the DVD. You get various languages
and surround sound options and then something about audio described.
Hope you can find the language menu.

Hi Dave,

One more question.

I purchased the copy of Ray with video description from Amazon.com but
I'm not hearing any description. At the beginning where his mother
tells him to remember his promise to her and then when he's waiting for
the bus there is no description. I haven't gone any further because I
thought they should be saying something to describe by then and there
was nothing.

Is there something I need to do? Some setting I should choose. When I
right click on the context menu there is an audio menu option when I
press enter there it just takes me back to the main screen. I suppose
it's possible that Amazon didn't send me the described video but all
their confirmations listed it as such, so I know they understoodwhich
version I wanted.

Maybe one of these days I'm going to actually get all the way through
this thing.

Thanks.

Hi there. I use the Live 365 player because as far as I know I have to
do that in order to receive the preferred member content that I am
paying for.
If I access a stream on WMP or Winamp I receive the ads and lower
quality streams that I'm paying to avoid. Plus streams are blocked when
they reach a certain number of free users, which I also want to avoid.
So then I guess the question comes down to this. Is there a way to play
Live 365 preferred content through Winamp or WMP?

Why do you use the bbc embedded player whilst there are much simpler
options? You can redirect it to either windows media player or real

Larry,
I've never used the paid service so couldn't say for sure, but that
sounds like a self-serving approach on their part. I should think it
wouldn't hurt to try to switch to another player if you can. You may
find the Winamp interface easier particularly if you want to bookmark a
stream and if the quality is good for listening you should get a good
recording. I guess I'm one of those folks who just uses embedded
players when I have to, smile, and probably just the only site where I
do use their player consistently is the BBC site.

Hello Russell. The default setting for recording is via the line-in
jack where you can plug a mic or another source like a tape player, vcr,
etc. If you want to change the recording source to internal mic you
will need to do this vai the internal menus which unless you know the
order of will need sighted assistance. To record you do the ofollowing.

1. Power the unit by pressing the power/play button on the top right
side.

2. Press and hold the record button which is the only button on the
left side. Hold it in for about 1 to 2 seconds..

Now you are in recording mode. To start recording press the record
button once and the unit starts recording. To pause recording press the
record button and again to resume. If you want to stop recording, not
just pause press the stop button on the right side and wait for the file
to save which can take a few seconds. You are still in record mode so
to start a new file press the record button once and a new recording
will start.

Hope this is clear.

Yes, they exist. The Archos studio players and recorders can talk with
the alternative firm wear called rock box, however these players and
recorders aren't made anymore and can only be found on Amazon and EBay.
Now Rockbox is being made for the IRiver players as well. I'll forward
an e mail with the player info. The Iriver players look better then the
Archos. I have the Archos Studio 20 recorder. I like it, but its kind of
big compared to the Iriver and other players.

When in Winamp and focus is on the main window, you can adjust the

If you're up for editing the winamp.ini file, look for the line pan

I've noticed that when I use WinAmp to play one of my MP3s,
that the balance
seems to be primarily in the left channel, meaning that the
majority of the
sound is coming from the left channel and very little from
the right. I then
have to open up the volume control and put the balance level
back to normal.
Needless to say this is a pain in the you know what. Is
there a place in
WinAmp to set the balance?

Hi Don't have WMP 10 on my machine at work so off the top of my head why
don't you try the following.

Get the stream you want to bookmark playing and then go to the file menu
and arrow down to add to library and then right arrow into the sub menu
and arrow down to add currently playing playlist. This then opens a
regular save dialogue box. Rename the file to something that makes a
bit more sense to you than what WMP comes up with and then save it to a
folder of your choice. next time you want to hear this station just go
back to the file menu and hit enter on open and navigate to the station
you want to hear and hit enter and you should be up and running.

Hi Jim.

Snap! I got mine yesterday; magic, isn't it?

Regarding your question. My brother, who has had one for a few months,
advised me to tune my radio into an area between stations, then locate a
screw hole on the base of the Veronica and turn the screw slowly, until
the signal is picked up in the radio. Probably a job for two people if
your radio or tuner is some distance from the transmitter. Best try a
quiet song so you can tune it in closer, if you know what I mean. Get
back if you experience problems. Incidentally, I ventured into my
garden with a radio and managed to get about 100 feet before loosing the
signal. The batteries in the radio are quite low so I'm going to repeat
the exercise with new batteries.

Best wishes.

RE: Recording windows media streams

Hi Terry

I record with goldwave all the time. You probably dont have the what
you hear option as I think that is a soundblaster option only. Other
sound cards have different options to do this. the best way to do this
with goldwave is to open gw and then hit f11 to open the properties.
One of the tabs allows you to select the recording source and set the
level in an edit field. I suggest you check the wav mix option here and
then start a stream and try to record it in gw, thats what i do an did
have no problems. If you are using onboard sound then you will need to
shut down your screen reader or you might get a bit of babble from time
to time.

RE: 2 Sound Cards

2004-08-29 Thread Hamish Mackenzie
Hi

It depends which output plugin you are using. I use the sqr crossfader
and with this you go to the output in preferences and hit the configure
button for the plugin. It drops you in the device tab and the first item
you tab to is a list box which should contain the list of recognised
cards. Select the one you want and hit okay and you are in business.
It should be fairly similar for whatever output plugin you are using i
would imagine.

Firstly! ensure that your on-board sound device is enabled in the
computers CMOS, and its best if you're using Windows XP as it supports
multiple sound devices, when the computer is booted both sound devices
should be detected automatically by windows.

You can then select through the Sounds option in the Control Panel
which device your system will use for playback, recording and voice.
Most applications such as Sound Forge, Winamp etc will let you select
which devices they input from or output to.

MP3 files by selecting the folder , firstly what setting do I need to

gain to the new ones with the same settings or do I have to do the whole
lot again?

Have you tried mp3 gain from http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
It can make all mp3s have the same volume so that you don't have to

Hi

One is an internal card that sits inside your pc case and the exdigy is
an external USB card that you plug into a free USB slot, hence the
similar features etc.

RE: Configuring multiple sound boards.

2004-07-25 Thread Hamish Mackenzie
Hi Again

yes you could direct jaws to the onboard card using the instructions in
the fs tech notice. Winamp allows you to choose which sound device you
want so that is optional from within the winamp settings. things like
real player and windows media player do not however so you have to
change these over from within sounds and multimedia in the control
panel. Bear in mind that if you put for example the default to the
exdigy so you could play wmp through the external card that all windows
sounds such as incoming email and msn alerts will come through the card
as well, so you might want to turn off the sound schemes when doing
this. jaws will happily stay on the other device if you follow the
instructions from fs properly.

If I were to acquire a second sound device for my XP pro machine would
it be possible to have the sound board function as my software
synthesizer for JFW and configure the USB sound device as the default
output source for Winamp and input for recordings? I am aware of the FS
TSN describing how to route their software synthesizer to a specific
board, but are most applications customizable in this area?

If so, how is it done? I only have one sound board, hence perhaps more
would be visible to me in the XP control panel's sounds and multimedia
devices dialog or Winamp 5.03's device settings if a second board were
present? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!!

Best regards.

Changing soundcards on the fly

2004-07-19 Thread Hamish Mackenzie
Hi All

running Jaws 5 xp pro and two sound cards and was wondering the
following. Is there an application or batch file I can create to switch
between my sound cards on the fly. I want to do this with a keystroke
rather than having to go into the control panel, sounds and multimedia,
and then doing a couple of control tabs to get to the audio tab and
changing the default sound card there.

Any ideas boys and girls??

Burning data cd in winamp pro

2004-07-05 Thread Hamish Mackenzie
Hi All

Have been messing around in winamp pro and have sorted out ripping and
burning audio cds, but am having a problem trying to burn a data cd. I
am trying to burn a number of mp3 files that are a book onto a cdrw and
I know there is enough space to put them on the disk but in winamp it
only seems to let me burn one of the files which is just short of 70
mins so i figure it is converting it to a wav file. How can I burn data
cds or is it not possible?

Subject: questions concerning GoldWave and files

Hello everyone,
I've got a couple of questions, and I'm hoping that someone can help me
out. I'm using GoldWave version 5. Every week I record a radio show onto
tape, and then I go and put it onto the computer. However, a lot of
times the files come out with some sort of distortion. And it's not
always the same thing. Most of them always have a slight background
hiss, but other times the quality just sounds poor. I don't always use
the same stereo, when recording these shows, so I'm thinking that might
be part of the problem. Sometimes, I use my stereo, but other times I
use my boombox. Then when I go to put the show onto the computer, I use
a small tape player that's always connected to my computer. What I'm
wanting to know, is how can I get the quality of these files to be
better? I'm not sure if I have the sound files set up wrong when I go to
do the recording, if that plays a part in it all. Usually, when I create
a new sound I'll set it up in stereo, the sampling rate will be at
44,100, and the other sampling feature is set on manual. Are these fine
where they are? I always save my files as mp3's, I prefer that over
anything else. Usually when I save them, I save it at 128 mb. I
wouldn't mind saving them at a higher bit rate, but I share these with
someone else, so that's why I just save it like I do. Does anyone have
any suggestions, or am I doing this just fine? Also, I've been trying to
figure out how to use the noise filtering feature, however I'm not
having much luck. I've read the manual, but it really was of no help to
me. Whenever I try to remove the background hiss out of a file, it
always ends up sounding distorted in some way. I cant figure out what I
could be doing wrong. I don't understand a lot about those settings,
and I know that's part of my problem. I've tried messing with the
different settings, hoping that I'd figure it out. But I haven't. Can
anyone give me suggestions on this as well? And I've got one more
question. What exactly is the insert silence feature, and how does it
work? Would I be able to use it if I were recording something that had
commercials, and I wanted a bit of silence, between where the
commercials had been, and the different parts of the file? Any help with
this will be much appreciated. Thank you, Terri

Issue with audigy card and onboard card

2004-06-30 Thread Hamish Mackenzie
Hi All

I have an onboard sound max card and an audigy card as well. I had
mapped jaws to the onboard card by adding a line in the jaws.ini file
and all was working perfectly till I had to reformat my c drive
recently. Now I cant get anything to play through the onboard card if
the audigy drivers are installed. If I uninstall the audigy then jaws
and music will come through the onboard card just fine. then if I
install the drivers for the audigy it seems to take over and even if I
select the onboard card in control panel sounds I just get silence its
like the audigy has taken over and wont let anyone else play. This is
really weird as it all worked fine before I did the format so I cant
figure out what might be different.

suggestions welcome.
