If you run freeswitch, you could use the portaudio module to get the
output of the phone line to your sound card which should do what you
want. Freeswitch is a whole pbx, so this may be overkill for you.
You would also need an adaptor to convert your phone line to sip.

Re: Recording calls on the Iphone.

2016-11-24 Thread John Covici
There is no way to record calls on the iphone directly. There are two
possible things you can do.

1. Get an app like groundwire and get an account with a sip provider
and make and receive calls through that number and you can record.

2. There are apps which allow you to make a call and then add a call
to their servers which will record the call.

I think this has been prohibited by Apple or some such and this is why
you have to get around this.

For the ripping, use the external programs tab. If you want to use
flac, you will need to download it separately and install and put the
path to the binary in the external programs tab and specify all the
options to the flac program that you want. After the rip is done,
just don't check the hybernate checkbox and the pc will not hybernate.

hmmm, I have had no very long times with exact audio copy, except for
one cd which was never ripped successfully at all. My drive was in
the database, so it worked fine, even the accurately ripped database.

I use exact audio copy all the time to do just this. I had to fool
with the configs to get it to do flac instead of mp3, but it works
great. You might still run into cds not showing up in the database,
but that's a different program.

Re: Recommendation on scanners.

2009-05-26 Thread John covici
But how do scan a book in that scanner without tearing it up or making
a copy which takes a lot of time all by itself?
I use the Optic Book 360 -- I think they have changed the model number
-- and its very nice for scanning books. Its a book edge scanner.

on Wednesday 05/27/2009 Robert Nelson(rsnel...@optusnet.com.au) wrote

If you are looking for a single sheet scanner then the most cost effective
in terms of scan quality, ease of use and cost is the HP G3110. Not sure
what the model number would be in your part of the world but look at the
site www.hp.com under scanners for home and home office. Navigation of the
site can be a bit tedious but it is worth it.

On the other hand, if you are proposing to do a lot of scanning of books or
just many sheets then you might look at a slightly different type of
scanner. After all, there is nothing more boring than sitting and scanning
one side of a book page then turning it over and scanning the second side.

I use a Canon DR2580 scanner which is the most amazing piece of technology I
have come across in a long time. It does not have the conventional glass
plate on which you lay a page and scan it. Instead it passes the page
across a scanning head and scans both sides of the page in a few seconds.
The document feeder will take about 50 sheets (depending on the thickness of
the paper). To give you an idea of the speed of the DR2580, I can scan a
1200 page law book in less than 20 minutes. It is just unfortunate that
the O C R ing of the scanned page images takes a lot longer.

For a good description of the CANON DR2580 go to www.blindcooltech.com and
search for a podcast that was put up there early last year. A search for
the character string 2580 should find it.

Yes, the DR2580 is probably more expensive than you might expect to pay but,
if your time is valuable to you, its speed and quality of output will more
  than make up for that.

That's the short answer. The somewhat longer answer is in a way. You can mix
tracks together, do voiceovers, and so on. I mix my radio shows together
(samples at www.totw.net) entirely using Gold Wave. I have mixed vocals
together on karaoke tracks. It's not as intuitive as a true multitrack
program, which is why the short answer is the correct short answer, but can
be done to a limited degree.

Total Recorder Drivers

2009-03-10 Thread John covici
For XP, you can use either driver -- I would try and see which gives
better results -- but for Vista you must use the
kernel driver -- to change which driver you have, you must reinstall
total recorder. For best results, make total recorder your default
sound device -- doing this will make apps like Windows Media Player
work correctly.

Hope this helps.

Nokia N75

2009-01-04 Thread John covici
You should bring up windows mobile device center under vista and
establish a partnership -- this is the way you can sync things up.
Bring up wmdc first and plug in the cable and things may work better.

   Hello to all,
I think some of you may be interested in the following information:
We, the Mar-Dy-Team, have created a new program, a mixture between
   Media player and playlistgenerator.
   This program is called MaPlEr.
We have created it, because we are not happy about the usage of
Windows Mediaplayer, and, as versions grow, the usage of Winamp too.
So we tried to create a program, which can play the most popular sound
files, has the ability to create and modify playlists, and has such
features like adjusting the pitch, without changing the tempo and vice
versa, adjusting the volume of music, without changing the volume of
   the screenreader, and so on.

The link to our homepage is:
   www.mar-dy.com
Here you can find more information about all the features,
download MaPlEr and listen to an audio presentation which
   we did on BCT (www.blindcooltech.com).

We would be very interested in feedback. What do you think of the
program? Is it useful for you, what features would you like in future
   versions.

And if you want to discuss with other users of MaPlEr, or just
want to be informed of updates and so on, just send an empty email to
   mardysoftware-subscr...@as-2.de
to subscribe to our software mailing list.

Best regards to all of you

How about a newer version of Nero? Maybe this one is just brain
dead. Its up to 8 and you are using 6.

Yes I sure did. The problem is either that nero doesn't think an audio cd
can support this feature or that the burner doesn't support it or that the
cdr blank may really have to be an audio blank for it to work.

I have tried it on two different machines with the same version of nero,
  same blanks, but different burners.

On both machines nero complained but with different messages.

However the result was the same, letting nero do its recommended fix always
  resulted in reinserting the pauses.

I am going to try trakc at once once again instead of disk at once and see
  what happens.

On machine A, the warnning was some of the features are not supported in
this write mode, nero can fix this but some audio properties may be lost.

If I clicked ok it reinserts the pauses no matter how I insert them whether
in properties or by checking the no pause between tracks box.

On machine B, Nero also complains but says a cdrw disk is needed to support
this and you have a cdr disk.

This message to me is even stranger and makes no sense.

If I continue with this I am going to try once again to do track at once on
machine A, and may or may not try anything on machine B, not sure yet.

  Thanks for the help.

This should have been a no brainner.

  Hi there.

Yes I had tried the properties suggestion with the 0 in the

  It is an LG burner.

I did try it on an old liteon burner and it still didn't
work but then Nero told me I needed a cdrw disk instead of a
cdr disk to do this, crazy!

  Oh well.
I am going to try a real audio blank but I doubt that will

Splitting Files with Cool Edit or Other Audio Program, Urgent, Job Related

2007-11-05 Thread John covici
I would use goldwave because you can run the file using fast forward
by 2 or 3 times and find the silences -- a bit slower than a sighted
person would do, but it will work. Cooledit may or may not have such
facilities, but I know goldwave does.

  Hello everyone,

Please be forewarned, I'm a pc tech by training but I'm not an audio expert,
so please be gentle with me because I'm in dire need of your expert
  assistance.smile

I am supposed to start a job this week where I need to record and then
listen to tech support calls from agents taking live calls for an internet
provider. My job is to split these calls into separate files and save them.
My boss is doing this visually by looking at the wave forms. I'm familiar
with the concept of wave forms, and I can read the negative, 0 numbers, and
the positive numbers with the JAWS cursor. Unfortunately, using Cool Edit
and JAWS 8.0, the software they are using, I can't seem to tell where one
call begins and where the that call ends and then where the next call
begins. I'm supposed to record the calls, separate them, save each one into
a separate file, rate it in terms of quality, and send my feedback to the
  powers that be.

Because I couldn't find the Cool Edit scripts, I downloaded Gold wave
5.22 and the new JAWS scripts. Gold wave looks more promising, I read the
manual and it appears that I should be able to do what I need to do, but it
is confusing because when I receive my file of calls, I don't know ahead of
time how long the calls are and where the silences are so that I can save
each call as a different file.

Thanks for your patience, folks. My questions are these: Can I do this
with Cool Edit, that is what my colleagues are using? Or should I use
something else like Gold wave, Audacity, or Sound Forge? There are other
people with disabilities at the job site, but I'm the only blind person. I
will try to use what works best if it isn't Cool Edit, but I'll have to
convince my boss that this would better.

If you'd rather not clutter up the list, please feel free to email me
privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you in advance for any help or
  suggestions!

Re: problem with replay streams

2007-10-17 Thread John covici
But what I am wondering, is once you record the stream, can you listen
later -- and is there a way to tell that the second stream you
mentioned is not recording?

Also, does tech support tell you anything useful about this?

I am thinking of buying the replay a/v as I am using Vista and there
seems to be no way out since total recorder will no longer work with
Windows Media player.

  Here is what I've discovered:

  Here are my findings:

This problem isn't unique to 8.30 as Replay AV 8.21 shows the same behavior.

The url listed in the Replay MediaGuide is

  http://www.replay-video.com/user/redirect_station.php?id=5459format=WMP

which records, but doesn't play as reported by the questioner.

  following stream plays, but
  won't record (obtained from StreamingRadioGuide
  (http://streamingradioguide.com):

  http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/index.php?CALLSIGN=WCKGFM

  practical solution:

create 2 entries in Replay AV one for recording purposes, and one for
  listening.

Making two audio sources come through one pair of headphones

2007-08-26 Thread John covici
You can get a Berringer (not sure of the spelling) mixer for $60 or
$70 which will serve very well for this purpose.

my screen reader's chattering was making her crazy. She is not a

chatter, but it is only when I am proofreading something that Jaws really
needs to chatter. In reality, although I did not say this to her, actually
her and others' chattering, combined with the copy machine, phones ringing,
doors opening and closing, etc. makes it difficult for me to hear Jaws and
my doctors' dictation, which is why I often have to increase the volume on
my computer. I realize that I need to take ownership of this problem and
solve it immediately for all concerned. Is there a way that I can have the
volume from my computer and my transcriber machine come out of one set of
headphones? I had a Y cable which made one source come out of one ear and
one out of the other, but I found that totally unpleasant and unacceptable.
I am willing to spend whatever amount of money it takes to fix this. Any
help with this problem would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

   Jerry and Andy,

I think that what is pertinent here is that you want to go to the On
Demand section of the ACB website, that is, Main Menu on demand. When
  you
get there, you usually have to go down several links, until you get to the
section where the separate weekly listings are for On Demand. It took me
  a
little bit of patience to get there. Also, there are several On Demand
links; you want to hear that there are something like seven hundred eighty
four links or something, then find your way down the list, past the
convention links and such. It is not all that difficult, but, it takes a
little while to get there. Then, figure out how to enter on and download
   the MP3 files.

Can't get Skype to Worok

2005-09-05 Thread John covici
I am not using Jaws, but I had no trouble -- I right clicked on the
name and the first entry there was to call them -- yes they did take
the contact submenu out of the call menu -- I am not sure why they did
that. So try using right click on the name instead. This is with the

Re: File to large to save in wav-format.

2005-02-26 Thread John covici
This depends on the file system you are using -- for a FAT file system
the largest file size is 4gb -- for NTFS its 2**64, if I remember
correctly. I think Goldwave should save any file your file system can
handle -- at least adccording to the manual.

on Saturday 02/26/2005 Christopher Maule-Oatway([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote
  Hello Anders,

The maximum size for a Wav file is 2 GB, which is 3 hours 20 minutes at CD
quality. To record a longer Wav file, you will have to find software that
will automatically split the file while recording. I have never tried this
in Goldwave, but there is a program called Advanced Recorder that will
split a Wav file automatically. This program can be found at:
  www.argtronics.co.uk
It is a so-called Beta version, and therefore free, and dates from 2001. I
run it using Windows 98 SE, but I am told by a friend that it works with XP
Home. It is a very easy program to use, but only records files in Wav
  format.

  Hope this helps.

When i tried to save the recording which was made in goldwave there was an
error dialog telling me that the file is to large to save in this format.
And then it suggested me to save in wma format instead.
Now i solved the problem by marking a bit unwanted area of the file and
  deleted it.
So now its smaller and now it works to save in wav format.
But i think its rather strange that goldwave couldj't save big wav files.
Is there anybody here on this list who is much better in sound edeting who
  can explain this to me.

You don't need their special tape machine -- just use a regular one

editor -- if you don't have one try goldwave, but many will do that.

Re: MP3 players

2004-06-23 Thread John covici
I am coming in the middle of this thread, but I wanted to make you
aware that the Archos has software available which makes the
directories and filenames and most of the menus accessible -- I don't
know of any other player which does that except for the specialized
ones for the blind and those as far as I know are more expensive and
have much more limited capacity. You can virtually not use a
cassette again and never have to worry about erasing a note you
recorded unless you want to because the date/time is in the filename
when you record.

Have you listened to Michael Lang's piece on this machines predecessor at
the ACB Radio#'s Main Menu? I was considering purchasing the new 20gb
machine, but was not convinced that I could navigate my way through
  hundreds
of albums. Do you need to remember the alphabetical order in which albums
are stored, and how about external microphone quality,? Is it good enough
to record bird song? Finally, the best price I saw for it was £240. One
more question, if you don't mind, would you say that it was a better
  machine
than the Archos 20 GB recorder? I ask because there is a lot of chatter
  on
this machine at the moment, with respect to navigation directories.

   Best wishes.

Hello,

I personally have an iriver ihp120 which
is a 20 gb hard drive player supporting mp3,wav,wma,ogg
formats. Accessible? Well, to me it's very accessible but it does
not talk. The reason it's accessible for me is because the layout of
  how
to use it is very easy. You don't need any
special software to transfer files to and from the unit. If your music
   is
organized into folders and you transfer it that
way it will be there for you in that order in the player. You can move
forward by file, or by folder. Each time you press
the forward or backward button the unit beeps to let you know the
  action
took. The unit also has a built-in microphone for
real time recording which will record in wave or mp3 on the fly. You
  can
change the recording source to line-in as well to

Can you use an external mike, and can you change the sample rate of
recording so as to get high quality recording, for example recording
  live
music?
