Use of two sound cards on a Windows 7 computer with JAWS

2010-03-17 Thread Michael D. Barber
Hello: Our client has recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. He has
both an internal and external sound card for this computer which he uses for
his Karaoke and D.J. work. He currently has JAWS set to use the sound card
chip on the mother board. When he boots up and comes to the welcome screen,
JAWS speaks and he enters the password and presses enter, but then the
computer hangs. When he tries this without JAWS, everything is fine.
Any ideas? Oh, by the way, he's using the latest version of JAWS.

Thanks.

RE: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION

And don't forget that if you buy one of these cartridges, you also have to
get the special cable so you can connect them to your USB port on your
computer when transferring books or MP3 files to your NLS player. I think
those cables are something like $3.75 or so.

Hi John.

I'm guessing here, but the San Disc drive may not be totally compatible with
the NLS player. People have reported problems with this brand of drive. I
tried hooking up an SD reader to my player, and it sort of worked. I was
able to play part of an NLS book, but then the player would say I had
reached the end of it. I didn't get a cartridge error, though.

People have reported good results with the Kingston brand of flash drive,
and I purchased a LEXAR 4 gig drive that works fine with the player. Keep
in mind, however, that the player is mainly designed to work with the
cartridges designed for it. You can get blank 2 gig cartridges from

http://www.aph.org

These are more expensive than flash drives, and they don't hold as much.
I've decided to use them, because I know they work with the NLS player, and
they fit into the front of it with little effort.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

The cartridges come from the American Printing House for the Blind and I
believe they're about $12.75. I recommend getting the cable meant to be
used for these cartridges from the same place because I think they're less
expensive there.
I also recommend that you go to http://bardtalk.com and sign up on that

digital talking book machines, you will have access to all sorts of

Hello List members,
I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail.
I have a few questions about it.
For starters, this machine can play files from a USB flash drive.
What kind of format will those files need to be in an order for this machine
to play them?
I haven't tried this yet, but can this thing play in stereo?
It has a monaural speaker built in to it.
But I'm asking about its headphone jack.
I have seen some digital playback equipment that had mono speakers built in
to them before.
But when you plug a pare of headphones in to them, the sound came out in
stereo.
Is this digital talking book player one of those machines that can do this?
Thinks in advance.
My best regards.
  John.
PS. Where is a good website to download digital talking books?

This thread reminds me of why I wondered why the remastering of the
Beatles albums is such a big deal. I can appreciate Sir George and Giles
Martin producing, but wouldn't all this only really sound good if on
vinyl? IMHO, there is music that isn't meant to be digitized
Seems there are more albums being made available on vinyl. I figure this
is due to boomers with disposable income wanting to hear music as they did
in their youth.

Just my 2 cents...

RE: NLS Digital Player Question

2009-12-29 Thread Michael D. Barber
Yes, they do. You have to make sure they're updated to the latest
frirmware. Then, you have to get the serial number of your machine. After
you have that, go the the RFBD site, log in, go to the authorize daisy
player area and choose the NLS player and then follow the prompts, one of
which is to enter the serial number. You will then be able to download a
generated UAK and load it onto the machine. Then you're ready to play the
RFBD books. For whatever reason, being able to play RFBD books on these
players has not been widely talked about. I found out when I was getting
ready to authorize my Victor Stream.

Hi Folks:

As far as an all around book reader is concerned, I believe that the Stream
is a much more stable device and has features that the other pocket players
do not have, such as AGC. As a podcast player, it is unsurpassed.

The problem with the stream is, however, that the present hardware
configuration has been pretty well maxed out. I believe, for example, that
the present hardware will not be able to play WMA DRM.

Just some thoughts.

Horses for courses.

It depends what you want to do. If recording is mainly what you want to do,
then I personally think the pocket is your best bet. I personally like the
ability to decide whether you want to set your recording volume manually,
which can be an asset if you want a really good recording quality, or use
automatic recording levels. Also the pocket has certain automatic recording
settings for environments like conferences, etc.

And it can play material in different formats as well and .txt and html
files at this stage.

But it is quite possible that the sense can play back more files than the
pocket.

Remember all of these devices are updated by firmware updates which can be
downloaded from the manufacturers' websites so what we may discuss as pros
and cons now may not necessarily be true in say 3 months time!

Hi: Both units will play NLS books as well as audible.com books. You
can record both wav and MP3 files on the booksense but on the stream
 if you want
MP3 files you have to convert them. The Stream already offers RFBD
support where RFBD will be available soon on the Sense as soon as
RFBD add it to their list of Daisy players. If you read a lot of
electronic documents or bookshare books, you probably want the
booksense because of the Kate and Paul voices which are much better to
listen to than the synthesizer on the Stream.
The speaker volume is better on the Sense, if this makes any
 difference to you.
Navigation is different on the Booksense, but not hard to learn. From
what I've been hearing, the Stream is going to be adding some new
features soon, but you will have to pay to have them.
 Hope this is helpful.

 Hello guys,
I've listened to reviews on both the book cents and victor stream.
What kinds of things should I consider when looking at getting either
one or the other? I want to be able to play NLS, Recording For the
 Blind books

and MP3s among other things. The book cents is getting the RFB and D

Okay, I know this isn't the Stream list, but I'm not joining it just to ask
this one question. I had a customer today who said while she was playing
her Stream the other night, it suddenly emitted a high pitched noise. This
doesn't happen all the time. She was using her headphones when this
happened. Anybody have any ideas?

That's the truth. I'll pay for the upgrade, but grudgingly, as they
originally promised that all upgrades would be free.

Well, since the advent of the Booksense, I believe several people bought
those when they first came out, and I think when they have RFBD support for
real after the first of the year, this will help their sales. I think
what's going to hurt Humanware will be when they start charging for some of
the newer features of the Stream. This will turn people off.

 Hi Andy,

Thanks for your reply. I currently use an Edirol R09 recorder with 2
Shure PG81 unidirectional mics, and I get good results with it. I am
hopefully getting a Sony PCMD50 later this year, so that should be fun.

What I'm really interested in doing is importing recordings into a file
with my narrations inbetween the tracks.

 Thanks again,
 Michael

 Hi Michael.

Personally I use Goldwave, but SF is perhaps the more professional and
 flexible program.

I really don't think it matters too much which you use, unless you intend

to do some really fancy recording stuff.

If all you are talking about is recording the pure sound of trains, then
it's a matter of which recorder, rather than which Digital Editor you
 choose.

Loads of us love the sounds of steam trains, passengers and day trips by
train. I have an Olympus DS50 and a pair of BSM Binaural microphones and

the sound quality is actually very good.

Okay, I need to convert my file, which is not MP3 into an MP3 file using
 goldwave.

but apart from that, my Olympus and Goldwave does the job.

Finally, there is a lot to be said about keeping things as simple and
basic as you can. This, I believe, can be a sign of professionalism.
Clarity and simplicity, that's the answer.

 Very best wishes.
 Andy..

 Hi everyone,

My name is Michael and I am 17 years old. I'm totally blind, and I make

audio recordings of trains. I am interested in putting a podcast
together but I am not too sure how to do it or what software programs to

use. I currently have SoundForge 7.0 on my computer, and it does
everything I want it to. Well, just about everything. However, I know
that GoldWave is popular with people who are blind, and I am wondering
which program would be easier for creating a podcast? I am thinking of
putting several of my recordings into this podcast, but I'm not sure how

to put the files together in eather program.

 Thanks for any advice,
 Michael

How about using 2 IPODS that can talk. Run one and you can switch to the
second one. That way you can pick each tune and only need to spen a few
buckx. However, you need a P.A. and a crossfader.

 Just an idea.

One of the ways karaoke software shows the singer what to sing and
when to sing it is by highlighting the word or syllable either in a
different color or type font. The only way of doing that in Braille
that I could think of would involve using the extra dots, and it seems
to me that that would be incredibly hard to follow. But ya know, it
might be interesting to try it out, except for the fact that the .CDG
files on karaoke disks are just graphics, no text.
