RE: Humanwear Victor Reader Stream Trek

Good point you make about those seconds wasting time.
Today, so much time can be wasted deleting crap emails or social media
stuff, that wastes time in business or study.
Especially as it takes us longer to identify a not wanted message than a
sighted person.

Hey Mary,
You are so perfectly right, and to tell you the truth it's not only blind
people who feels this way.
But fascion is playing many of it's tricks on people you know.
Also a dedicated device for special needs is wonderful.
For example with a Victor you don't really need to care about power loss or
battery drainage.
Charge it once every second day, and you can read on and on as long as you
like.
Also manipulating the audio is a time consuming process. Lets say you need
to go to a certain page in a daisy book with touch, or find a special fraze.
This is technically speaking possible, but will always and I mean always
take much longer with touch then with regular keys.
If you're a student and is planning to study for 5 years these seconds
becoming minutes becoming hours, becoming days, actually counts against the
biological human clock, and would be a great unnecessary waist of precious
time.
Yes off course I do own the app Voice Dream Reader, and loves it, but
believe me. I use my Stream 95 % of the time instead.
I could use my nice Hims U2, and honestly don't know why I don't. Maybe
because of it's size. But this little handy pocket device feels more like
reading a real book then using apps for all purposes in life. :-)

Best regards
Brian

The good thing about Victor is it has real buttons. No need for voice command.
I agree doing voice command in public can be a problem.

VoiceCommands as an adjunct to an existing device could be good, although I
really can’t imagine using one out in public with GPS or or on a bus or
whatever. That’s why say it should be an adjunct if they did it. But doesn’t
the stream run on Linux? My guess is there aren’t any APIs that would let them
use, for instants, Alexa. For my money, with the exception of doing things on
the actual device, his voice assistance are vastly overrated. More often than
not, you get something that makes you look on the web for what they found, or
you get a non-response. We are definitely not in the Star Trek days, so the
fact that human where hasn’t come out with something actually like a home or an
echo makes perfect sense to me. If they just came out with one of the speaker
things, nobody would buy it. Why would you want to buy a specialized speaker
made by humanware, when the mainstream ones are after all voice activated. What
possible value add it could there be? That’s why I say having some kind of
voice deal that would actually let you use your device with voice under the
right circumstances could be good.

It’s the ability to do it with multiple files that is needed.
For me I get confused with the conversion process

Subject: Re: listening to time signals using pc?

The simplest explanation is that a time signal allows you to calibrate your
time piece manually.

Let's go back in time say to when WWV first went on the air back in the late
1920's.

At that time, clocks and other time pieces weren't too reliable and - in some
cases - needed to be calibrated daily with a Time Signal, WWV being one of the
earliest around.

So you tuned your radio to WWV and waited for the stroke on the 0 second of the
minute, "58, 59 0", long note which started the count up to the next 0 second
of the next minute.

WWV has announcements to indicate the time coming up, "At The Time 9 Hours 48
Minutes Co-ordinated Universal time", that way the person setting the time
piece has time to be ready for the 0 second stroke.

Of course modern-day time signals such as WWV/WWVH do far more than that these
days and there's a whole host of different signal services around.

The future of time signals is shaky given that most clocks now can adjust
themselves thanks to the Internet or an Atomic Clock time signal so no need for
a human to be involved in the calibration process.

You can find more details about WWV etc on Google - despite what you might hear
from those who ought to know better > - and Wikipedia.

Sounds well beyond my brain capacity.

I just like hearing how Richard Diamond sounds so different when the files

Is this possible and if so how? Because the dialog seems to expect to fill in a

I tested the recording processs on a YouTube file and it just recorded the

There's at least one model of Sangean I know of which is marketed in the
U.S. and that's the WRF28 and there may be more.

The crucial thing is here to make sure that - whatever Sangean radio you buy
- is compatible with the Undok or iSangean App for IOS or Android.

Hi Guys,

Seeing that many of you appear to be VRS users.

I recently considered buying one rather than another mainstream Internet
radio as a preference to listening to streaming radio stations on my I
phone.

I was initially told the internet radio on the VRS was simple to use and had
35 pre sets.

A couple of folk then said stick with your I phone for internet radio

Peoples views would be appreciated.

My main criteria is stable streaming, as an example my I phone cuts out much
more often than my static Roberts internet radio.

Where do we think the technology in the VRS sits

Thanks

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a large capacity card to store a large quantity of
OTR shows encoded in MP3 format on. I'm sick of swapping 64 GB cards for
listening to various genres saved on several SD cards. Just want one big boy
card to put the majority of them on.

What is the largest capacity SD card the Victory Reader Stream can handle?
Also what is the best brand to buy that will last the longest period of
time?

Thanks for any recommendations.

Re: Applian Technologies Info For Blind Users

Hi,
I am using Replay Radio to create recordings which are split into 1 hour
segments starting from the top of the hour.
I notice that they are 1 hour and 7 seconds long. Is this normal, to be

VLC has a Jump To command if that's the sort of thing you're talking about
along with various shortcuts to allow you to skip in various increments
through a file.

Daisy Players? I haven't used one of those things in a damn long time.

Now before everyone gets upset I should point out that my view is only a
personal one and everyone's circumstances are different.

I get all my books these days from Apple's iBooks or I buy from Google or
Amazon, I wonder where we'd be without those publishing houses, yep they're not
perfect as we've discussed here but they do open the doors to a whole heap of
information we never had before.

Daisy titles usually come from library's? That's fine if you like that sort of
thing but if I want to read a title that's just come onto the market? Well I
frown upon the idea of having to wait 6 months just to read it.

What you don't realize is that for some folks who are deaf or hard of hearing,
or people like me who travel on trains and planes, having the ability to use
headphones and charge your phones is pretty important.
I resent having a substantive capability taken away for the sake of "thinness".

Yeah not much was said but it sounds like they are more wireless than blue
tooth. They talked trach about blue tooth. I mean just to say that they didn't
seem keen to use it. So I guess it's some kind of wireless like wireless
headphones and keyboards use. Which for distance is much better. Leo Laporte
and Andy Anatco were pissed about the jack. They kept insisting that they could
have kept it. But that would mean the phone would have to be wider at best.
Right? AAlso I agree with Shiller time to cut the cord. Cords always tangle
especially the cheep spegetty cord like Apple themselves use for the ear pods.
Or you could axidentally step on them and break something like I've done to my
Bose OE2I head phone kable. Stuff like that. I agree it's not fare for those
that have bought mad expensive stuff that is corded but oh well se la vi. At
least they give ya an adaptor.

Indeed it has and no real surprises.
The headphones socket has gone to make way for another speaker - thus stereo
speakers which should dramatically improve the sound of the phone - and that
can only be a plus.
According to the blurb I read the iPhone comes with two very nice additions, a
lightning dock to 3.5MM headphones adapter and a set of Airbuds, interesting to
know whether these use AirPlay, Bluetooth or yet another standard? I wasn’t
presented with much information on them.
No mention of atpX unfortunately, at least we have the dock where we can plug
in DAC’s if better sound is what we’re after or we have AirPlay.
I’ll still be holding onto my iPhone 6 having spent a small fortune on the
Arcam DAC .

Hi!

For those who are after a Hi-Fi tuner device which supports Internet/FM
Radio - with the addition of DAB/DAB+ outside the U.S. - then you may
consider the Sangean WFT3D dedicated Hi-Fi Tuner component.

As well as radio the WFT3D boasts network music capabilities - able to
play music from a NAS storage device or other computer etc via DLNA -
and Spotify connect.

The WFT3D is available locally in Australia and can be used with the
Undok App for IOS and Android.

From: Dane Trethowan

Subject: A Near Perfect Tabletop Radio?

I believe I've found to be a near perfect tabletop radio, the DDr-63
which comes from our good friends at Sangean

The bad parts first, this radio has a touch screen however one can
either use the Remote control or the Sangean Remote App if one has an
iPhone or Android devce.

On my system I can't get the Sangean App to work on my iPhone for
whatever reason but it works fine on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Android phone.

The DDR63 is literally packed with features and here are a few.

USB port for playback of music from a memory stick.
CD Player equipped with MP3 playback function.
Digital DAB/DAB+ for models in Australia and Europe.
Pandora connectivity
IOS dock
DLNA compatibility for playing music from a Mac, Windows machine or NAS
storage
Recording of a source to SD card or USB device.

The radio even sounds quite nice thanks to its wooden cabinet and the
sound can be further tweaked by the use of the EQ settings or you can
customise the bass and treble controls to your liking.

Unfortunately there's no way for a person without vision to set either
of the two alarms but I do know that the display is very clear - I have
this on good authority from those who can see it - so if you're part of
a couple then this unit would certainly be a great bedside companion for
the two of you.
Other nice stuff include both an analog and digital line-out, aux-in and
headphone socket.

Exactly

How are you supposed to connect something like a neck induction loop to such
a device?

Yes some of the rolls Royce hearing aids have wireless connectivity but very
few people have the money to purchase them.

But I suppose this segment of the market is so small that Apple does not
really care.

The problem with all this forward thinking is that it leaves the hearing
impaired out. Jonathan Mosen has done some very good writing on this topic.
I personally have the equipment to deal with the loss of the headphone jack.
But in thinking of what it will mean for others, I think it is a stupid idea
at this time and, if it is just to make the damned phone a hair thinner, it
is clearly not worth it and is just another money-making angle for Apple.
But this one is coming at the expense of a fairly large and growing segment
of the population.

Set Top Boxes running Android are everywhere, there’s even a Remix Mini TV
version which you can use.

As I said earlier the Android TV is exactly that, a TV running Android Lollypop
with all the stuff a TV should have - Electronic Programme guide etc - with the
usual stuff, dedicated Netflix and Youtube functions, dedicated Google
Chromecast streaming, facilities to use Apps from the Play store, Voice search
and so on.

The system is without its flaws of course, I believe that the Electronic
Programme Guide is a little difficult to access for example but I’m hoping that
perhaps their may be a workaround so one thing at a time, I’m hoping to have
the TV in around 3 weeks from now.

Instead of trying to use regions why don't you just select the portion
of sound - say from beginning to end of track - and save the selection
to a separate file?

That way the procedure will work whatever editor you use whether that be
Sound Forge, Goldwave, Amadeus Pro, Total Recorder or anything else.

Greetings,

If you want to save parts of a file but not the whole as individual items,
select each area in tern, by marking start and end with start and end
markers, then in the file menu there is a save selection as, give it a name
and save. If you require to save the whole file as tracks, such as if
you've a concert and would like to save each item as a track, this is when
the cue-markers become useful.

In this case, you ensure first you are at the start of the file, once you
begin to work with cue-markers, you cannot make any changes to the file, so
ensure first, all edits Etc. are finished and the original file saved.
also, be aware it is always wisest to work with files uncompressed, i.e when
still in their .wav (or other) formats, not .mp3 or other compressed types.
The more processing a file has undergone, i.e compresion and de-compression,
the more sound degredation will occur and once quality has been lost, it
cannot be retrieved.

So, having made sure the file is as you want it, go to it's start and insert
the first cue-mark, control with q. Now go on through the file, stopping
where the next cue-mark is to be placed, I always first make sure by placing
a start marker i.e left bracket then ensuring cursor is at start marker by
pressing my home key, then issue control with q. Continue until you've
reached the start for the last track and issue the control with q.

Now, you are ready to split the file into it's items.

In the edit menu, go to the cue-markers function which I think is open menu
and cursor up to the sub-menu, arrow right into the submenu and down to the
split file. Note, you can change cue-markers as there is a list of the ones
you have set but I strongly advise keeping it simple for now, go to the
split file within the menu. I cannot remember the tabs here, think they are
self-explanatory, eventually you will find a save button, enter on this and
ensuring you save into a location you want, allow it to work.

You should end up with a set of tracks, what their names will be depends on
how you process these tabs, but I tend to make then save as Track nnn (the
first being 001) into a folder set aside for such matters.

Then (I use Winamp) play the folder ensuring you have saved what you
intended, if happy, close the file from which you saved the tracks but
unless you want to keep the cue-markers, don't save the file.

Cue-markers cannot be saved in a file other than, so far as I am aware, .wav
format, if you try and save them, GW will warn you no way! but they can be
saved in a file of the same name if I recall rightly, with the exdtension of
".cue" this will happen in the same folder in which the file from which you
extracted the tracks, is saved.

Remember, I am using GoldWave V5.70, the last which works with WindowsXP how
V6.anything differs, as of now, I know not for though I have V6.14, have not
yet installed on my W7 machine.

Interesting, I thought we’d gone beyond using scripts for Skype now, it seems
to me at any rate that the latest version of Skype for Windows is very
accessible indeed, has been like that for quite some time and full credit to
Microsoft addressing many accessibility issues.

Its great that people are writing scripts but I don’t like to use them when I
can avoid doing so as they isolate the user from the way the running App
actually works so therefore you’re tied to one system or one Screen Reader and
thus don’t have the knowledge of how functions are used in the App itself, only
my opinion of course.

I’m just saying SPL is very good, and most importantly very accessable. There

Winamp with the encoders is a free salution that works, and if you have two
soundcards the sqr crossfader. The second card is a screenreader only card, and
the rest default to your primary device.

You can also set up a Scheduled recording. As long as you choose
You can choose “Direct Download” or “Capture”.

I’ve not use the other one, Replay Media Capture, so not sure what the

Well, see, there aren't any actual download links, hence my reason for
writing to the list. For an example of what I mean, go to
http://www.formatchange.com, go to changes by city and just for fun,
choose chicago. You'll see different links for different stations. the
first one says 103.9 the groove debuts. If you press enter on that link
and go a ways down the page, you'll find an html 5 player with a play
button. if you press it, the audio starts to play, but there's no
download link. What I'd like to do is capture that audio in an mp3
file. i'm hoping that makes a little more sense, sorry if the subject
line wasn't clear. :)

If you are looking for a program on the pc side that is a good editor I
use golswave. Despite opinions to the dcontrary, you can make just as
tight edits in goldave as ou can in sound forge. I think a lot of it is
simply what hyou are used to in terms of an editor. Jonathan Mosen, for
example, who used to be a big proponent of sound forge, told me recently
that on the pc side he now uses studio recorder for most of his pc
editing needs. Now studio recorder doesn't have all the bells and
whistle that sound forge does, noise reduction, ability to use plug-ins,
etc, but for just plain editing it apparently works very well.

So you're telling me that the keyboard access is the only reason you
bought Sound Forge Pro for?

Many Many other audio editing packages have very good keyboard access
and shortcuts including Studio Recorder, Total Recorder, Goldwave,
Wavepad and so the list goes on and further to this, all these packages
have facilities for customising the access.

As I stated previously, many of the features and functions of Sound
Forge 11 pro are purely visual and they don't have keyboard access to them.

The other problem here also seems to be blind loyalty - pardon the pun
-, people buy a product - in this case Sound Forge -, they've spent so
much money on the product so therefore they're hoping beyond hope that
everything will work as it did in Sound Forge 4.5 and they're not
looking to try anything new even though times and software are a
changing and that's unfortunate as those people miss out on anything
that actually works.

Sony Creative Software have never been interested in accessibility and I
doubt they ever will be whereas other products have come along where the
developers are interested in accessibility and take note of user
feedback, there's a lot of competition out there.

A classic case in point is Sonar, I know someone who spent literally
thousands over time on Sonar this and Sonar that, upgrades and all the
rest of it.

I encouraged him to try Reaper and.. well.. he wished he'd known about
it earlier and he's furious with himself for spending a fortune on
Sonar, of course its not his fault but I do give him credit for having
the courage to try another product and just not blindly follow on.

Finally, I doubt whether 99% of Sound Forge Pro users - whether Blind or
Sighted - would even use a quarter of the functions offered so we're
back to square one, why spend so much money?

all I ask or have ever asked is the changes be posted to me as well so I can

Hi Peter
It depends. If you added the scheduled entry yourself manually using a
stream URL you found and copied to your clipboard and used the add show
button within RR9 and if you know the start time for your station or show
then you can do as you wish with the local time and UTC. The start recording
time and UTC should be the same for your time zone. For example, if I add a
radio station or show manually myself and I know the start time is for
Eastern time zone USA and Canada which is -5 hours and I know its starts at
7:00 PM EST / 1900 hours I would put 7:00 PM for the start recording time
and check to be sure the UTC combo box reflects my time zone which is -5
hours USA and Canada.

So to recap here your show or station starts at 7:00 PM you would put 7:00
PM and put the TZ time zone to your local time zone also.

If you add a show or station from the replay guide use those default
settings except when you know the TZ time zone is incorrect.
Say I add this station from California that is in the Pacific time zone
which is -8 hours and I see the UTC within the scheduler saids -5 hours then
I will correct it myself.

I wonder how Youtube deals with video files you upload that contain a second
track that description would be in? Will it give the viewer an option to
switch, or do they end up stripping it out? I suppose you could upload a
second one that's described.

Nothing wrong with video, but it should have been more useful to blind viewers,
with audio explanations of what was on screen. I got very little out of it.

What's wrong with making a youtube video?
everything else is in text. the web page is text, the project sight is
text, etc. What is wrong with a video so that sighted people can
actually see the thing?
and if they're trying to get it premoted that is because they need
backing. I don't see anything wrong with that.
I really think people should be told about this.

The video is mostly meant for sighted people, but do read the web
sight it is much more detailed.
You can save things on it I'm guessing, sinse it mentions being able
to save the face of a loved one etc so I'm guessing that there are
presets somewhere in there.

The potential of this thing is enormous, you guys must realise that.
No more wondering what something in a shop is with this as one tiny

I agree, I would be cautious about such claims. Personally, I would much
prefer to have information from a human rather than technology. Also, it
could result in over reliance on Horus, and it is something extra that has
to be carried.

I've seen a lot of these so called miracle devices over the years, and
whilst in no way do I want to dispel the hope that something like this might
bring, it seems to me that they're at a very early stage of development. I
agree that it does sound great, but the technical aspects of how the device
works aren't explained at all. I'd be keen to find out exactly how it does
the things it says it does.

Okay...I checked this out; from what I'm seeing, it'll work with any system
except for Windows 7 (says nothing about 8 or higher) so I can only assume
this won't work on my machine as it is a Windows 7 64 bit machine! Is this
correct?

Download the Player.exe from
http://www.vuplayer.com/player.php
Install it and agree to terms.
Start the player.
Insert a CD and wait till it's recognized.
Pres control+p to export the information in the player.ini.
Open CDEx and cancel the process of searching the data base.
Press alt and navigate to the right to CDDB.
Press arrow down till you find "Read from player.ini" and hit enter.
The information should be there.
I only very rarely have a CD that the combination of FreeCDDB and Gracenote
don't cover.

Good luck and get back to me, if you need any further help.
Take care,

As long as it remains an email-based system and doesn't require one to

I'd also mention Groups.IO (www.groups.io) as an alternative provider;

The hosting for the pc audio list and the domain name will expire at the end

sending messages to some people, not allowing some people to send messages
to the list, bouncing messages to valid e-mail addresses, a lot of trash

Honestly, Tom?
I actually think it has something to do with your reliance on
Ultrahost more than anything else. I'd be more apt to have you host your
list's email somewhere else, before resorting to Freelists. The domain
is too good to waste as such. I can host pC-Audio on my DreamHost
hosting plan, as i have unlimited domains and unlimited...well,
everything. I won't charge you, and we can see how you like it that way.
Alternatively, subscribe to Google Apps pro, host your domain there and
use Google Groups on said domain, and have rock solid lists for as long
as you like. But please...no freelists.

I was just making the point that it is disappointing when this happens. A

Hi Peter and all,
As for Studio's accessibility strides going backwards, I think it might be that
the developer haven't thought about testing accessibility changes thoroughly.
Also, this problem came about due to some internal changes to how Studio
operates (and people had emails back and forth regarding this issue on the SPL
mailing list).
As for the new kid on the block, it has a potential to be a good alternative to
SPL - it's far from perfect, but it's getting there.
Cheers,
Joseph

don’t understand why you say that.
I’m interested to find out more about it.
And a developer that is making an effort to include accessability should be

Especially when Station Playlist seems to have got less accessible in recent

Hi again!

Just been going through my library.

I have some tutorials on
Garrage Band and they're in the "Take Control" series, there are two,
one deals with recording and the other deals with performing.

These are available for purchase and I think your friend will find them
on the iTunes iBooks store, they're also published in other accessible
formats.

I remember starting the job of going through one of these but like
eveyrthing else, there are only 24 hours in day instead of 35 and some
things get forgotten .

Hi,
I’m not a Mac user so not a Garage Band user. I am trying to help a woman who
has a file recorded on Garage Band. she needs to get it into .mp3 format.

shesays it is in Logic format. Any clue as what she can do please? she is not a
blind person, so any instruction you give for me to pass on should be in a way
that a sighted person can relate to.

thanking you in advance, as I need to get this file soon.

Hi!

Yep, you get Garage Band as standard with your Mac, I've never used it but
you'll find tutorials on Garage Band at http://www.icanworkthisthing.com these
tutorials have been written by blind users who use a Mac, you'll find just
about everything you'll probably want to ever know about Voiceover and Iphone
up there too! so that's a damn good resource.

As wel as Garage Band you get Quicktime Player, no this application isn't an
editor but it is a sound recorder so you have that to be going on with at least
if you want to record something.

As you know I use a variety of recorders and editors with my Mac, my favourite
recorder would have to be Audio Hijack Pro, records from any app or any sound
device. My favourite recorder/editor would have to be Amadeus Pro which
handles multi track recording/editing too! funny we should be talking about
multi track recording/editing on pc-audio right now.

Anyway have fun and I'll answer your questions where and if I can, if I can't
answer them then I'll put you in touch with people who can.

Hi!

Someone on list asked about free CD Ripping Software a little while
ago, I answered with iTunes though of course I didn't realise at
the time that there's probably an even better answer built right
into Windows itself which I assume the questioner was using.

The answer of course is Windows Media Player which — when I last
tried it — was very accessible indeed.

I didn't follow the conversation at the time so perhaps someone
else on list suggested Windows Media Player anyway.

Hep, subject line says everything and this may be round the corner.

I wanted to forward the original eMail on this subject to the list
however the author of same - as it stands - hasn't given me permission
to do so as yet and I respect that.

It is hoped that the product will be available with full accessibility
soon, the developers are actually using JAWS to test their product to
see just how accessible they can make it.

The other good news will be the price, instead of $499 that you pay for
the full Station Playlist suite you'll only need to pay $199 for the
laternative.

Those who are helping the programmers are professional DJ'S and
Broadcasters in their own right having worked in the field for longer
than 10 years so they know their stuff.

I hope to be able to bring the list good tidings in the next couple of
weeks though someone else may beat me to it by forwarding a press
release .

Interesting to hear you say that, I know others who use Windows
Media 12

it

comes to accessibility issues etc, I know people who use this
extensively and no other.

Nero is really very good.
I found Exact Audio Copy awkward.

This sounds very interesting. I look forward to hearing about it from
internet radio DJs. However, it would have to be very very accessible and
provide very good facilities to get me away from STation Playlist and have
to learn a whole new operating system as well.

Hi!

Users of Mac machines and dJ software may find the following software
offering of valuable use particularly as the package is supposed to be
accessible now? I’m going to find out more and - if I can - take it for a
test drive.

Hello all,

I am using the stream to listen to radio stations on the internet through my
wifi. I also use the line in jacks on my living room stereo to listen to
the stream , as if I am getting the stations off the air.

How can sighted folks do the same thing? I hear that there are stand alone
devices that can play internet radio stations by using wifi in my home.

thanks,

Do you have the wi fi capability set up. This will allow your Victor to
communicate with your computer network and thus to the internet and radio
stations.

What "next" button do you refer to? When I insert the CD, CDEx retreaves the
data from the database FreeCDDB and I press F8 or F9 to extract the content.

This must be set correctly in the options however.
