I'm afraid your a little confused, as shoutcast itself is nothing more then
a protocol, the shoutcast server can serve any medium that one can write an
application for. As such no unique server is needed to stream to a cell
phone, simply lowering the bitrate or running a separate server with a
lowered bitrate will allow users on the go to enjoy your content.

 Hello List!

I have a shoutcast server through Ultrahost for my regular internet radio
station. I was wondering if such servers exist that are designed for cell
phones and, if so, where can I find one? I'd like to stream my station
via my shoutcast server and a cell phone server at the same time so cell
hone listeners could hear my station as well. A low-cost one would be
 preferable.

 HI,
But shout cast isn't as flexible as media server in terms of auto detect
 the
optimal bitrate and such. You'll have to run several streams to acheve
 this.

 Hi Allison

I have an mp3 player (not the zen stone) which has this problem if the
file names are not unique within the first 8 characters, so if the
file names are long with author+title+track number
then it would play out of order. When I put the track number at the
beginning of the file name it worked ok. The files displayed in the
right order when looking at them in Windows because Windows has no
problems with long file names. This may be worth trying.

Also I read a review of the Zen Stone which said that it does not
always resume play from where you stopped. This is a bug which occurs
fairly frequently and would by annoying for audiobooks, has anyone had
this problem with the Zen stone.

The whole point of portability is, well, portability. If you have to
cart a computer along just so you can recharge the device you have music

I'm curious. How do you think this makes it more inconvenient? Are you
thinking it's more inconvenient than something which has a rechargeable
battery in it but uses an AC adapter to charge it? If so, I'm thinking
whether you plug it into a USB port or an AC outlet, it would all be the
same. I guess though AC outlets are still more ubiquitous than USB
ports. If I go on vacation, like a cruise, I'd still have to bring my
laptop just to recharge my Creative Zen Stone.

If you're comparing it to something which takes batteries then I guess
it would be more inconvenient, when the battery runs down, you have to
tether yourself to an electrical outlet or a USB port while it's
charging, but if it took batteries, you could just pop a fresh battery
in and go. I guess for the price, you could always buy two!

OK never mind, you're right, I can see where it would be a bit nor
inconvenient! I'm still asking for one for Father's Day though! I have
the Creative MuVo with 128M of memory, and having something that's
supposed to be just as easy to use, but with 1GB of memory is just too
appealing. Plus I see it's size and the fact that it has rechargeable
batteries as providing it's own conveniences. I don't have to worry
about spare batteries or carrying two separate cords.

 Hello List!

I own a Cingular 8525 PDA. I understand that this is actually a PC with a
cell phone program. What I don't know is whether or not the phone portion
of this device is the same as a regular cell phone or it is just a program
on Windows Mobile. If this is true; then why couldn't the same type
program be on a notebook or laptop computer? What is the difference? I
hear some notebooks talk of having Windows Mobile operating system on it.
If this program could fit on a notebook, then we could just use bluetooth
to access it on a bus or in a car--couldn't we? If not, then why not. We
could then run Code Factory or a similar program just to work with this
device or maybe JAWS or Window-eyes could do the job. I'm just wondering
since a PDA is a computer too with a cell phone program. Am I just
whistling dixie or is my assumption or perception correct? Do let me
 know!

 Audio Menus for iPods

 By Kate Greene

Download an MP3 version of this story

703 Researchers are testing ways to let people listen to gadget menu
 options
 instead of looking at them.

Clicking through the menu on your iPod demands a significant
 amount of
visual attention, which can be a hassle (while jogging) and even
 dangerous
(while driving). But engineers at the University of Toronto and
 Microsoft
Research are working on software that could make it possible to
 navigate
the menus of gadgets that use circular touch pads, like the iPod,
 without
looking at them--only audio cues would be used.

The researchers have designed an auditory menu technique--called
earPod--that provides audio feedback when a person drags his or
 her finger
around the touch pad. Although it's not ready to replace the
 expansive
menus on real iPods, the results are encouraging, says Patrick
 Baudisch, a
research scientist at Microsoft Research, in Seattle, who worked
 on the
 project.

 LINK:
 http://www.patrickbaudisch.com/

Within 30 minutes of beginning to use the technology, people can
 navigate
two levels of earPod menus faster than traditional visual menus,
 and just
 as accurately.

Requiring constant visual attention while using a PC is
 reasonable,
 says
Baudisch, but if you're using an iPod on the road, [constant
 visual
attention] is unreasonable. In addition to giving people back
 their eyes,
he says, audio menus could help gadgets save battery life by not
 wasting
energy on a screen, and they could add functions to the
 screen-free
devices such as the iPod shuffle.

The idea of using audio menus isn't new. Auditory interfaces can,
 after
all, be found in touch-tone phone menus and in various assisted
technologies for seeing-impaired users. But historically, handheld

consumer gadgets haven't widely used audio menus. There are a few
 reasons
for this, says Bruce Walker, professor in the school of psychology
 and
college of computing at Georgia Institute of Technology.

 LINK:
 http://sonify.psych.gatech.edu/~walkerb/

One reason, he says, is that audio hardware and software have
 been
resource intensive, requiring significant amounts of computation
 and
energy. In addition, audio software has been difficult to
 program.

But computing power is becoming cheaper, and there is an
 increasing
 need
to find different ways to interact with handheld devices, says
 Walker.
Within the past 10 years, he says, the ubiquity of mobile devices
 with
small displays has made us all visually impaired. Currently
 there are
only a handful of researchers who are systematically looking at
 ways to
make better audio interfaces for various devices, but Walker
 expects the
ranks to grow in the coming years.

This first earPod prototype has a two-level menu hierarchy with 8
 items
per category, for a total of 64 items. To test how well people use
 the
 system

The more I think about it I don't think I had this problem of not being

 Hi doc,
I keep meaning to look up key strokes for this prog. intervideo win dvd
here are the ones I know so far.
control b and f move back and forth, and you can adjust by how much in the
settings, at least I'm pretty sure of that.
the space bar will pause the flixk, but so will control n, that's kind of
weird. control p will play the flick but won't pause it.
when you hit control f it will do a continuous fast forward that you'll
 have
to stop by hitting control p, but it won't do that for control b, it will
 only rewind like five secs.
and of course, the applications key works fine fine. so you can do
 everything from there.
 enjoy

Subject: Cingular 8525, with Windows Pocket Pc 5.0

 Well Lists:

I had to take the Treo 651 back to the store and got a Cingular 8525
instead. I heard some demos and went to the web sites of Dolphin (Pocket
Hal) and Scansoft (Talks) and got demos to try. I want to know if either
of these products would work with a Windows Pocket PC Version 5.0 PDA. It
is not clear from their sites. All I see is they work on Nokia Phones. I
heard on a list once that some of these programs do work with the Windows
Pocket PC phones. Could someone tell me which one is most likely to work
with this phone? Also, I saw a program called Mobile Speaks. Is this
still a third one? I'm getting overwhelmed with so much stuff to
research. All I wanted was a simple Phone (or maybe a PDA Phone).
Nevertheless, it shouldn't be so much trouble--should it?

Finally, I checked with Cingular and they say they have a program called
either Talks or Talkx. Is this the same as Scansoft (Nuance) offers.
Cingular subsidizes this software for a one to two year commitment. I
already have a two year agreement effective this past Saturday.

Thanks for listening to me and indulging in my phone problems. Your help
 is appreciated very much.

Re: Treo 650 (A Palm Phone using Palm-OS)

based on the discription its simply meant to be used by a sighted person to
listen to text on their phone. I've seen similar things but never on a
phone., granted this could open up the door for an ambicius developer to go
beyond these limitations, and create a fully functional screen access
solution for palm.

 Hello List!

I checked with Cingular Wireless about the Treo 650 and they said they
 have
no info on speech software because it is a Palm thing and Palm won't give
them any info on it. I called Palm and they said they had no info either.
I then checked with the CodeFactory.es company via the net and they say
 they
support smart phones (palm versions). The Treo 650 doesn't use the
 Windows
Mobile Pocket OS yet I guess. Does anyone know of a seller of the
CodeFactory cell phone screen reader programs? I also heard of a program
called Talks and Speak (or something to the fact). Would some of the
 Nokia
phone software work on the Treo650?

I'm checking before I have to return the phone and get another one. Any
recommendations of a better and similar phone, with accessible software
 available, would be appreciated.

able to play some of them but not all and don't understand why.
How can I make sure that Winamp will play all of them? Do I need a special

I can play all these files just fine in Quicktime but would rather play

Subject: Panasonic and Accessibility

Hi all. I hope this isn't off topic, but earlier, I received some
information on this list about Panasonic's liaison for accessibility,
Robert Wenner! But as of April 1, another person has taken over this
role. I'm forwarding a message that he sent to me, regarding DVD
recorders and DVR's, and accessibility! Gary,

I took over Panasonic's Accessibility Program from Robert Wegner effective
April 1, 2006. Regarding your inquiry Panasonic does not offer Tivo.
 Panasonic
does offer DVD recorders with TV Guide Electronic Program Guides (EPG)
for ease of programming similar to Tivo, but, without the monthly Tivo
 fee. Panasonic
also offers DVD recorders with or without hard drives. Cable DVRs can not
be connected to a Panasonic DVD recorder. All Panasonic DVD recorders
 allow simultaneous
record and play, however, you can only record one program at a time, since
only one TV tuner is included.

I hope I have answered all of your questions?

 If not please advise?

 Subject: Panasonic DVD Recorders

Hi there. I haven't contacted you in a while. I'm glad that Panasonic is
dedicated toward making things accessible for blind people. A friend of
 mine
 has a competitor's DVD recorder with a built-in harddrive. I believe it's
a Humax, out of Korea. It has the Tevo system built into it. It sounds
 like
that might be a good system, but I'm wondering if Panasonic has something
like this built into their DVD/DVR recorders. It sounds like a neat way
 for
folks to program their shows they want to record on their DVR, and copy
things to DVD! I know that some cable providers like Comcast have a DVR
 built
into their cable boxes, and I'm wondering if something like that could be
accessed with your product. I think that for some, they're able to
 program their
Tevo's through their computers. That would be great for a blind person
who uses a screenreader, if their screenreaders can read the messages that
 are
necessary to go to an edit field where they can program the shows they
want to watch. With your Panasonic DVD/DVR recorders, can a person record
 more
than one show at a time? This is something I'm asking about, just out of
curiosity. Thanks for your replies in the past, and hope to hear from you
 again
 soon!

 Hi Folks:

Does anyone know of any good expandable flash MP3 players. This might be
 a
partial answer to accessibility in that, one could organize one's files
 via
 SD cards.

On another point, would there be any point in establishing another list

Blind folks and their use of, and interest in, mp3 players?

 Thanks gang.

we'll still have the same number of commercial-free ones as we did before.
I don't know when these channels will launch or the formats they'll
have, but that's the information that's out there floating around on the
 net.

This really isn't that big of a deal you know. If there are going to
be spots, and it looks like there are, it'll probably only be 2 or 3
minutes an hour tops, and that's definitely better than the amount
you get on commercial radio. These channels are expendable really,
because they're run by clear channel. if the commercials bother you
that much, simply find other xm channels to listen to that don't

interestingly enough the station i currently work at my school uses what i a
hybrid system of editing material called a Shortcut. Its a unit with
function buttons and a wheel to controle your space in the file. We have
it hooked in and out to a board, and record to it edit then outpout to
minidisc when doing productions or recording. its a pretty nice system once
you memorize the key layout, with minimal need for screen support, though it

Well I am working on it. Hopefully I will be able to come up with some
answers soon. The only work around that I can think of is to make use of
 two
computers. One computer for the production and programming elements using
screen reading software. Once you have recorded your program, you can then
send the file to your host computer that would go directly to air. The
 work
around that we would be looking for would be similar to that of call
 centers
in that only the operator would hear the prompts from the screen reader.
 In
this case I can only assume that they must be using multi channel sound
cards and somehow splitting the different audio feeds. .
I find that what is lacking with radio automation software is the amount
 of
information on the screen. Some software programs are so detailed that
 they
would require a lot of information from a screen reader program, and there
are other programs that simply do not prvide enough information for the
operator. Unfortunately at this point in time it is basically a visual
thing. I do have some functional vision, but would like to have some audio
prompts simply as a guide as there are simply too many functions that can
 be
overlooked with out being prompted. The tune tracker software package was
designed with a broadcaster in mind, as it has functioning buttons that
resemble buttons on a cart machine, tape player or CD player. It even has
 VU
meters that look like the real thing. You would be hard pressed to find a
radio station these days that didn't operate with out radio automation
software. People who are blind or visually impaired are simply put at a
disadvantage. I have worked with Dallet radio automation software and
 found
it to be very user friendly. I used it on a computer with a large monitor
along with Zoomtext. I have no idea how it would react with a screen
 reader.
All that I can say is that electronic editing is much better than using a
razor blade and editing tape. Don't want to go back to those days ever
 again.

 don't
matter that much if you know at about what point the vocals in a song
 would
start when listening or where a good point is to talk over the end. I see
the touch screen interface not working for obvious reasons. I wonder how
hard the artist and title info are to obtain using speech, and also
operating the other controls of the software? I wonder how one would get
 the
screen reader redirected to a cue channel where only the operator hears
 it?
I assume each channel off the system is it's own physical sound card so
 have
windows default be for that purpose. Maybe radio sound cards are
multichannel with multiple outputs that software can address
 individually,
 I
wish I could figure out how on my turtle beach to force jaws to another
 of
the 3 outputs that would then have nothing else on it.

I hope this tune tracker thing can be made to work. . It sure would be

 Hi Rick,

Now that's true, it is difficult to locate what you want when everything
 is
just strune around. You have to know the artist and even if you do, you
aren't guaranteed that you'll hit or not. Sometimes while searching for
somebody you may find there work mixed with a combination of other folks
 as
parts of compilations when you really weren't necessarily looking for the
 compilations at all.

It really depends on what you want.

I use soulseek because there are a lot of people from germany and euro
countries who have what i'm seeking. ie tanzwut, attrition, current 93,
 legendary pink dots, etc.

But beyond that, I still maintain that what so many of these services
 lack
is a good explorer interfase so that people would be compelled to sort
 their
 material by album or something.

When I browse a user's folders, I like to see them at least organized by
artist. I don't care as much by category. I mean, we could get so
technical. Is it EBM, IDM, goth, synthpop, futurepop, death metal, doom
metal, techenical death metal. But if stuff was at least categorized by
artist and album, one could find material more readily.

Hello, I didn't see a price for this machine. Do you know what it would

If we're talking about the Edirol R09 which isn't out yet, it seems to
have a going price of $399. I don't know if that's a street price or
not, I think it's MSRP, actually, so it will probably end up being
 cheaper. I got
my Edirol R-1 for that price, and this is supposed to be cheaper than
the R1 since it's a more slim-line design with less bulk.

As for the SD cards, check mwave or newegg for good prices.
Mwave seems to have 2GB SD cards starting at around $115, 1GB starting
at $48, and smaller cards for cheaper.
At least for the under 2Gb mark, sd seems to be cheaper than compact
flash, which the R1 uses, but they're around the same price for 2GB.

I wouldn't change my Iriver h320 for anything! Not only is it reasonably
accessible, but the recording quality is the best I have heard from any

Another exciting development is that the folks at rockbox.org is working

I believe this is not possible with flash-based players.

 Hi Kiran

I wouldn't change my Iriver h320 for anything! Not only is it reasonably
accessible, but the recording quality is the best I have heard from any
 player of its size.

Another exciting development is that the folks at rockbox.org is working
 on
alternative firmware that may actually give the player a speech interface.
I believe this is not possible with flash-based players.

 Hello there.
I own and use a creative jukebox the original player. I am able to use
 most
functions of the player but the software that comes with it is horible.
 I
 am
an experienced jaws user and I don't mind fedling around with
 inaccessible
staff but this was a lot more problematic.
I think the same happens with the zen line of units. You can't see them
 as
another drive in windows explorer so that you can copy folders to it.

I would have bought a zen instantly if it wasn't for the software
 interface.
Now I will get the iriver h340 instead.

 Nektarios.

Subject: looking for a portable MP3 player but not a walkman type

I know the subject of MP3 players has come up but not having the need for
one I don't know if this particular type of player has been discussed. A
blind friend wants an MP3 player but one with its own speakers in it and
 not
one like a walkman that would always require the wearing of headphones.
He's wanting one that's a little bigger and that he can play his CD's
 and/or
MP3's while working in his shop--something designed like the ghetto
blasters as they were called. I have a Bose system but I think he's
wanting something that can be battery-powered or plugged into the wall,
 and
my Bose only runs off electricity. Does anyone know of a good MP3 player
with accessible buttons, and if you also know an approximate price range
will you let me know that as well? Thanks.

That's good though, at least if it has a switch you can accedently rub
something against it and it will switch to unlock. Mines flash too. Best
 to
go with flash. I like them with menus though, like having the equilizer
 (do
Ipod shuffels have that?) And I like the fact that mine will go into sleep
mode after a set amount of time.

Advice to everyone: do *not* buy rio products. I had 2 rio nitrisses and 1
rio carbin in less then 3 months, both worked for about a week then quit
 altogether.

Yes. I saw one of these things at the podcast expo last month. One

thing is that, in the FM radio, the frequency is spoken as you press

turns the player on? Can one stop, play something else, and return to the

I heard the Creative ones disable your primary card (good thing I didn't

Yes. I saw one of these things at the podcast expo last month. One neat
thing is that, in the FM radio, the frequency is spoken as you press the

Subject: 0 stations in the winamp library

Hi all, I have tried writing the winamp list, and thus far, have gotten
no satisfactory response to this problem, and that is, that it seems
ever since version 5.11, or what ever version where they fixed the bug
with the winamp playlist editor, I can't get the library to search,
even though I go to media library, and shift tab to the tab control,
and locate the on line media tab, and examine the six items which are
all checked, and I even set the number of stations to 1 in the
modify preferences edit box, despite the nullsoft server cap of 1000
stations, and still, I can't get the library to search, I get a custom
control, and nothing else, until I alt tab, and back again, only to
realyze it hadn't searched for anything, and I even reinstalled version
5.112, but no go, and I even changed the number of stations to 1000,
and I even disabled kerio personal firewall, thinking that might be the
problem, but no, and so I'm frustrated as to why the media library
isn't searching for stations. I wonder if comcast is blocking a o l
ports, or something like that, though I doubt it, but I've done
everything I know to do, and still, ever since 5.11, I can't get the
library to search, and I wonder if there are any ideas people have,
this with winamp 5.112, windows 98 se, window-eyes 5.5 192 megs of ram,
and a 400 megs processor, and thanks in advance.

Well folks, here's more on the events list.

There's a window on the central left of the screen that's the events
window. Above it are some buttons which JAWS doesn't seem to be able
to label, I don't think there are any tool tips that come up for those
buttons when a mouse pointer touches them. I was able to figure out,
just by clicking them, that the last button on the right, the fourth
one, is for opening the events list dialog. Once you do that, it
behaves like a normal dialog does. There are buttons at the bottom to
add, modify, or delete an event, buttons for OK and Cancel, etc.
Events are things like jingles, spots, external audio feeds or
streams. They can be scheduled at specific times or periodically
(once every 15 minutes, etc.) There's also a Save button to save your
event list. What I haven't figured out is the next logical step, a
rotation. Hopefully I'll do that today.

I've also figured out that the jingles buttons are more suitable for
drop-ins than they are for jingles. Some folks like using jingles as
drop-ins, I admit to having done that once or twice in a show, it's a
matter of taste, I guess, as to how you use this particular feature.

 Onward and upward.

Subject: Sony memory stick reader for windows xp?

 Hello,

I have an old Sony ICD something or other memory stick recorder. I also
have a floppy disk adapter which allows a pc to read the memory stick
like a disk. When I insert the loaded floppy adapter into my pc, it
offers to format the drive. I do not wish to erase the material on the
memory stick. But It may well be that allowing this will establish the
usability of the adapter with xp. My hunch is that, either Windows xp
already has the necessary driver and just wants to format the memory
stick, or, I do need to get an xp driver for this floppy adapter, or,
this equipment is outmoded altogether and I need new equipment.

I kind've tried using the sony site to find the answer, but it's like
looking for a needle in a haystack.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for a tip.

impossible. You must have a plays-for-sure compatable player to play these.
I don't yet know of any truely accessible players that support plays for
sure. The creative ones might, though i haven't yet seen them, the rio
carbon works fine with it but i havent really tried to use it.
sorry

 Hi: Kathy:

Some of these books are locked and must be played by Window's media. As
well, some of them have a 21 day timer; after which, the book doesn't
 function.

I don't think that these books will play on a stand-alone MP3 player.

 Cheers.

Subject: Mp3 Players that play WMA files

Hi, all! I work in our local public library system in Louisville, and
recently the decision was made to put downloadable audible books on our
website. Thing is, the books are in Windows Media format only. Does
 anyone
know what players are available, that are relativiely inexpensive and
blind-friendly, to play these things? I know that, blind friendly or no,
 if
you want players that save your place for you in a file, you have to buy
more expensive stuff. But any help to know which ones to recommend for us
blind readers would be greatly appreciated!

 Hi Listers,

As the subject says, I am looking for an accessible DJ package. I am
thinking of going into the disco business.

I have heard of PC DJ, Mix Master and Niro and I am not sure if they are

 accessible.

 Thanks.

THat is desent enough for only one gb. What is the point of having huge
files? Also, the PNY vibe is pretty good in accesibility as far as I'm
concerned. But since you have already purchaised this one, stick to it,
 and
don't listen to people who tell you the recordings sound bad. They are
descent enough, and usually it is all you need.

that it can only record in 96 K MP3 is the lose. Sorry, bad.

 or
899, but it has a color screen. At least that is the only difference
  I

 TJ, you wrote:

err the iriver site claims it goes up to encoding at 320 kbps mp3

Yes, it does, but only if you use the standard firmware, with which the
recorder cannot be used as a universal mass storage device. With the
standard firmware, one has to use propriatary software to transfer files
from and to the iRiver. To use it as a USB drive, one has to use an
alternative firmware, also from iRiver. With that, one can only record
 up to 96 KBPS.

The most accessible flash recorder is the new Plextalk PTR2. Flash makes
no noise, which is good, because one doesn'T have motor noise on ones
recordings. But it also causes a Problem, because one cannot hear,
whether the recorder does anything or not. Also the menus of these
recorders offer a lot of options, but for blind people, they make such a
device a bit difficult to use. A talking flash recorder like the PTR2
 IMHO is a great solution.
