RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-10-24 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,
You asked;
do you mean you just put
the ajbrec.ajz (archos.mod for the player) in the unit
I put the ajbrec.ajz and .archos. on to the unit via the usb. Not the name
of the file you mentioned.

you said;
If the former, try attaching it to
the USB port of your system and turning it on. Is it recognised by the
computer

If buy... is it recognized buy the computer, do you mean does the win xp
sound for new device connected accur, then yes I get that sound both
ascending for being connected and immediately the descending tone for
device removed. This seems as though it would continue
ad-nauseam.

Even when the archus is not connected to the computer the boot process
aborts and the unit shuts off.

I have just installed new rechargeable batteries and charged them before
copying the aforementioned files to the archus.

Any other ideas and help is greatly appreciated. I will try recharging and
see also.

Thanks.

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-10-23 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
What do you mean by "loaded the Rockbox Software"? Do you mean you just put
the ajbrec.ajz (archos.mod for the player) in the unit, or do you mean you
tried flashing the unit with rockbox.UCL? If the former, try attaching it to
the USB port of your system and turning it on. Is it recognised by the
computer? If the latter, hold down F1 while turning the machine on. Further,
how do you know it doesn't finish the boot process, if I may ask? Are you
sure it's not a battery issue (when the batteries are low, the unit will
often not finish boot).

I haven't been there in quite a while, but the last time I checked they were
all clearly designated. Just grab the one specific for the recorder v1, or
v2/v2fm depending on which model you have.

Hi.
If you purchased it about three years ago, and it's from Archos,
it's probably compatible with Rockbox.
Where is the headphone plug on it? Is it on the left side or on top?
Further, what does the USB port on the unit look like? Is it like the port
on a computer or is it smaller (A or mini A)?

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-27 Thread Kevin Doucet
Hi,
It is called Archos 20 GB jukebox. It is a recordeing unit. I purchased it
about 3 years ago. Does any one know if this unit is compatible with the
Rockbox software?

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi.

If you are referring to the table showing the differences between the
players and recorders that RockBox will work with, then the url is
http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/devicechart.html

Note that the devices and features are in a table, so make sure you use your
screen reader's table navigation or you probably won't make much sense out
of it.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Sarai,

Again, I don't have a recorder, but I believe the file for those units
is
called ajbrec.ajz . This file should be placed in the root directory
of
your unit. Off of the root diredctory you should have a .rockbox

If you don't have punctuations turned on with your speech, there is a
period
in front of rockbox. Under the .rockbox directory, there should be at
least
a langs directory. In the langs directory you should have the files
english.lng and english.voice.

Actually, if you use Winrar or Winzip to extract the archive you
downloaded
for your model to the root of your archos device, those folders along
with a
few others should already be there and all you have to add is the
english.voice to the .rockbox/langs folder.

Hope that helps...

http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM
Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would any other
version of
RockBox. "How?" Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos, expand the
zip
file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod file
(player), or
ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. "Again, how do I
do
this?" Now download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put
the english.voice file into that. "Huh?" That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice Assuming
your
archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your archos as
usual, turn
it on, and hit menu. You should have talking menus. Stay tuned to the
rockbox list, subscription information for which is on the Rockbox
site, for
future improvements. Aman

Hello Aman,

do these Archos players and recorders have a function, with which one
can skip from one directory to the next or previous? Or does one have to
use the navigation tree system?

Sarai,

Again, I don't have a recorder, but I believe the file for those units is
called ajbrec.ajz . This file should be placed in the root directory of
your unit. Off of the root diredctory you should have a .rockbox directory.
If you don't have punctuations turned on with your speech, there is a period
in front of rockbox. Under the .rockbox directory, there should be at least
a langs directory. In the langs directory you should have the files
english.lng and english.voice.

Actually, if you use Winrar or Winzip to extract the archive you downloaded
for your model to the root of your archos device, those folders along with a
few others should already be there and all you have to add is the
english.voice to the .rockbox/langs folder.

Hope that helps...

Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few requests to send
this info, so I'll send it to the list. To activate the talking menus, you
first need to download the daily build of RockBox. This is not the stable

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Rick Alfaro

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Rick Alfaro
Robert,

RockBox does not work with the current crop of Archos units, including the
Gmini and all of the AV series. Unfortunately, the units that can run the
RockBox firmware are no longer made, or sold in any retail establishments
that I have seen so far. I even tried finding them on Amazon, and they show
up as being discontinued or no longer carried. Your best bet will probably
be Ebay. Below is a url to a table that shows the various units RockBox
works with and their differences...

I am finding the different versions of Archos players and recorders a bit
confusing. On the Circuit City web site, they are selling a Archos Gmini

software? Is this different from the Archos recorder v2?

Thanks,

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,
I am finding the different versions of Archos players and recorders a bit
confusing. On the Circuit City web site, they are selling a Archos Gmini
120 20GB MP3 Jukebox. Does this one work with the Rock Box talking
software? Is this different from the Archos recorder v2?

Thanks,

To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the daily

Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be
j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking menus.

Hello Aman,

do these Archos players and recorders have a function, with which one
can skip from one directory to the next or previous? Or does one have to
use the navigation tree system?

I have the new 20 GB recorder and the sound quality is wonderful! Now, I put
rockbox on the recorder but don't know how to use it. I looked at their
manual and am confused. I just create music folders on my computer and paste
them to the player. Since the folders are placed in alphabetical order, its
no problem finding where my music is. Any suggestions for using rockbox?

Hi, Rick.
Please excuse the delay in the response.
First, the recorder V2 is thinner and smaller than the player. It has ten
buttons instead of six, it has the lithium-ion battery pack, and I believe
the only size you can get one in is 20 GB. The FM recorder and recorder V2
have the same form factor. The only difference between the two units is the
FM radio in the FM recorder. Note that FM recorders and recorder V2s have
USB 2.0. Players usually have 1.1. Older non-V2 recorders sometimes have 1.1
and sometimes 2.0. It's difficult to tell to which specification of USB The
older recorders conform. You can get both recorder V2s and FM recorders, I
think, new from Amazon.
If you want one of the older recorders, or one of the studio units,
you can find them on Ebay (search for Archos recorder or Archos studio).
Many consider these better units, since the battery pack in the recorder V2s
and FM recorders is proprietary. However, they're only available on Ebay
with a bit of looking.
Personally, I have a recorder V2 and am happy with it. I have heard

Hi, Don.
Rockbox is doing great things with the Archos units. They have just
put in accessible menus, and are working on speaking directory names and
other things on the screen. Rockbox is firmware for the Archos units, and is
free to the user. The archos units may be purchased at many computer stores.
Note that only the Archos player, known as the Jukebox, the Archos recorder,
and the Archos FM recorder work with Rockbox. The Archos AV units, which
play video, don't work with Rockbox. The Archos units are available from
many places, online from Ebay and Amazon, offline from many computer stores.
The cost ranges anywhere from $75 to $300, depending upon whether you want a
used or new unit, a player or a recorder, and what size of hard drive you
need.
Two notes are worth making about buying an Archos unit. First, the
quality control is said to be bad. If the unit works out of the box, it
works well, and usually continues to work well. However, make sure you have
some sort of return policy if you get a unit that doesn't work well.
Secondly, it might be an idea to get a player or recorder, rather than an FM
recorder or a recorder V2. The latter units have no replaceable batteries.
That is, the battery pack is built into the machine and cannot be modified
by the user. This may make life difficult on longer trips. If mobility for
extended periods is important to you, you should buy a recorder or player.
If you value the FM radio present on the FM recorder, or the form of the
recorder V2, which is different from the one for the standard recorder, you
might like to get those units.
Now, once you have your archos, you can get the Rockbox firmware
from
http://rockbox.haxx.se
There are versions for all the Archos units I mentioned.
You'll need to get the instructions for instituting talking menus
and talking directories. These require some files which you can get from the
web. If such instructions are needed, you can either write to me or to the
Rockbox development list, subscri

Hank,

Originally, I had paid $299 after a $40 rebate which took months to get. I
think all of these units are discontinued now as they have been replaced
with newer models that do not work with the RockBox firmware. Finding one
on Ebay may be the only way to go if you want to buy one.

Do the menus talk when trying to setup the recording menus? are you able to use the
editing features to break up or trim a recording with the Rock Box firmware?

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-24 Thread Rick Alfaro
Aman,

I pulled my Archos jb6000 out of the closet, and decided to try rockbox, so
I found your message in my archives. I followed the instructions you gave
in another message, and now have talking menus, folders, and file names. I
was absolutely blown away by what these guys have done. My interest in the
Archos units is now rekindled and I think I would like to buy one of the
newer units with a larger hard drive.

In your message above you mentioned a recorder v2 and that it had a
different form factor. Can you describe this unit, and what the form factor
is like? Does it have a lithium battery, or were they still using nimh back
then? I know they are older units, so I am not sure what I will be able to
find, but I'll try Ebay. Which of those units is reported to be the better
sounding one? Any info you can provide to set me off on a hunt for a nice
unit will be appreciated.

These RockBox guys are awesome. I am definitely going to contribute
something via their PayPal link.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

These require some files which you can get from the
web. If such instructions are needed, you can either write to me or to the
Rockbox development list, subscription information for which is on the
Rockbox site.
Good luck.
Aman

Subject: Archos and Rock Box

Hello,

I would appreciate it if someone could give me contact info, cost, and
development status info about using an Archos portable mp3 player in
conjunction with the Rock Box software. I want to know if there are working
prototypes or whether the Rock Box is still strictly an idea.

Since we know that the Apple Ipod is not accessible, I hope to find
something comparable which is accessible.

Thanks.
