Lucky you.

It didn't work for me.

Mind you, the control pannel in the drivers for windows 7 was tricky to
navigate with a screen reader.

Great card though.
Also, the last system unit I bought, I made the mistake of not buying a main
board with the PCI slot for the card.
You live and learn.
or is it learn and live better?

Thanks,

Joe

Mary Ellen! I don't remember what's on that second disk. It's
certainly not the low latency drivers I wrote of. Those drivers would

come with a hardware product. I'll try to check on this for you but no

Mimi! I use the Edirol UA3-FX but I'm perfectly happy most of the time
with the onboard sound card. I don't know of anything that's fully

onboard sound card I've ever seen you can bring up the volume control. What
other things would you want. I know some of these devices have all sorts of
obscure features, effects and such but most of it's parlor tricks.

Re: Delta cards.

2004-10-13 Thread Jerry Richer
Susan! Any onboard sound card or most any inexpensive $20-$100 sound
card should be fine for software speech. The choice of the other card
depends on what you want to do with it audiowise. Most people would be
happy with any sound card bought in any department store but there are
specialized cards for specific music and audio work. The sky is the limit.
I sell one that cost $1,000 and there are more expensive ones. They don't
sound any better, they just do different things. Incidentally, digital to
analogue conversion is very well understood and good converters are
available in the most inexpensive cards so don't get talked into spending a
lot of money for a specific card because someone told you it sounded better.
They all sound great.
Most of the time I just use one sound card. It's an Edirol UA-3FX.
It's a USB device and I let it do software speech, audio recording, music
playback, my VCR goes through it, Skype and everything else.

Susan unless you're working with a professional music or audio
production application you do not want a Delta. You would know if you are
because you would have paid at least a couple of hundred dollars for it.
Besides the Deltas are no good for software speech. The most inexpensive
Delta is $200. The most common one costs $599. Check them out at
www.chirpingbat.com/delta.shtml
There are less expensive cards by the same manufacturer but I haven't
tried them with software speech.

I'm quite confident in saying that most people who have tried this

Hi:
I agree with the previous post listed below in this email. If you have an
OnBoard sound chip in your computer, that usually will do just fine for
computer speech output. Other programs besides computer speech output can be
a problem for the Delta sound cards such as Windows Messenger; although MSN
Messenger seems to do much better.

Cheers.

Re: Delta cards.

2004-10-09 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Jim,
Okay, pleading ignorance here, smile, I know nothing about the Delta
soundcards. Seems that the ones I always hear recommended are either some
flavor of Soundblaster or Turtle Beach, so what is different about the delta
card and how do I know if I want one? How does it compare pricewise to the
others and does it eliminate the pesky crackling in XP that I keep hearing
about? Since I have not gotten into serious sound editing but may someday,
I'm not sure how much accessibility I need in the sound card control panel.
Answers to these and similar questions much appreciated, and just when I
thought I knew a little, sigh. Many thanks.

Susan

To my knowledge, most people don't have much luck with software speech
on Delta cards. I'm not clear at all on the technical reasons for this.
You would think that a card costing several hundreds of dollars would do
software speech but it isn't always the case. I have two higher end USB
sound cards. One handles speech fine and the other is useless. Great for
everything audio except software speech.

2004-10-09 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Jerry,
If I were to do this, I would want to configure one card to run JAWS
exclusively with the other for everything else, is this doable? Any
recommendations on which ones will play nicely together and/or can anyone
either give me or point me to the how-to on configuring them? Hope the
question makes sense.

Hello Rocker:
If you are using JAWS, you can obtain my Delta Control Panel scripts at the
following address:
ftp://compuconference.com

You will find a list of things there. The name of the script should be
self-explanatory.

Cheers.

Any thoughts are of course welcome. I want to find that card that solves
both the crackle and accessibility issues. Good sound quality is a must
too.

Try M-audio delta 24/96 or m-audio delta 44 from midiman. Every check-box
and every fader is accessible, you might need help to establish which
control is being adjusted, but you will hear the per centage of gain when
using navigation keys. The patch-bay router again is accessible, as is
every page on the control pannel.
Try it, you'll like it. Best audio cards I have ever used.

I have a turtle beach santa cruz in one of my machines. It works great but
the control panel is not real accessible. They have a few presets for echo
and such but you won't be concerned with them. Personally i'd buy one of
the new Creative external cards that plug in to your USB 2.0 ports. These
cards are the cleanest I've ever heard with no distortion and you can move
the card from machine to machine. There still a little pricey but well
worth the money.
