Re: Looking for new musical keyboard
Rick! The Yamaha PSR's do offer and always have, a lot of bang for the buck. Most people wouldn't consider them professional instruments but when you describe what you are looking for, these come to mind. Now the problem is that they change pretty much every year so they're hard to keep up with. MIDI-MAG would be an excellent place to ask. The controls are layed out in an extremely logical and easy to memorize order. It has 135 different rhythm patterns and 619 different voices. The Yamaha grand piano is very good. The strings and guitars aare good also as well as the flutes. It has auto accompaniments, a disk drive and 100 prerecorded songs. It is very blind friendly and you can order it through Sam Ash music for a little over $500. The new DGX505 has some additional features one of which is a USB connection so you can connect directly to the computer and download or upload MIDI files. I don't know about the price, however, but I wouldn't think it would be too much more than the 500. If you get the 500, I'd be happy to send you the control layout that I have written up. If I can help further, I'd be happy to do so. I am in the market for a new musical keyboard with of course midi capabilities to interface with my computer, but I would also like it to have automatic accompaniment features. Something with lots of styles and good sounding instruments. Above all, something as easy as possible to use as the old grey matter doesn't work as well as it used to so the fewer key presses and menus I have to remember, the better. I am looking for something fairly sophisticated with lots of sampled sounds, so I am willing to spend up to $1000. If anyone can recommend something they have had experience with that fits the bill, I'd be most grateful. Also, if someone out there has the subscribe info for the midi-mag list, I have questions that would probably be more appropriate for that group. So far I have looked at a Yamaha PSR450 and a Korg PA50. The PSR450 did not have as many dedicated buttons as I would like, so practically everything like instruments and styles had to be entered via a numeric keypad. The Korg PA50 I kind of like so far, but it is very difficult to know whether or not it is difficult to use in a showroom. Any advice appreciated. I would also like to eventually interface the keyboard with my laptop.
