That is one of the reasons I chose Sirius. Its on line stations are very accessible. I can choose the stations I want by number or move up and down the dial with little trouble. The problem is that this is only the bare bones minimum of what is available for my monthly service. I have a Myfi portable unit for example which is a wonderful device. I can do all the things I have stated on it with ease. But here are some of the features I can't use. 1. I can't read the display to get the artist and title of the song. 2. I can't set the presets. 3. the other day the unit got locked and I didn't know why until I discovered which button to press and how to press it to unlock it. 4. The Myfi allows for programmed recording of events much like a VCR records TV programs which I cannot do because I can't see the screen. 5. After recording my selections it is possible, if you can see, to rotate the selection wheel and go through a list of all the songs which played during the recorded item and select only the one or ones you want to hear. 6. my car radio and my Bose stereo require the XM radio to be set at different volumes for undistorted listening. I have to have my driver do this because it can only be done on the screen. 7. here's one I forgot. On the Myfi unit you can select an artist you like and be advised every time that artist's music is playing on any channel, if, of course, you can see the screen. Now I'm not meaning to whine about the unfairness of it all but I think we need to continue to let manufacturers and service providers know about our needs. I have to agree with Carl that they could and should make the radios more accessible. I have a Sirius receiver but can't do anything beyond listening to the stations adn programming the presets. Even the presets get messed up if you're not careful. I know that chips for speech aren't all that expensive, and sighted people as well as the blind would get benefits out of a talking receiver. Think of all the traffic accidents that could be prevented, b if the sighted person drove, that is. Anyway, there's much work to do in accessibility. Well, it's true the visual features are not user-friendly for visually impaired, but I love the boombox anyway. Nothing can persuade me to throw away that receiver or anything I like so much just because the display cannot be accessed. Manufacturers as you know, manufacture for the masses. We are only a small minority and if they made these items completely accessible, we would have to pay more for them. It does not make sense but we are only a small part of the larger listening audience. There is a clock and sleep timer on the Skyfi SA10 I have. But I don't care. I can't use that feature on my receiver, either. But I use everything else I can access. RE: Looking for XM users
Tom, I'm not selecting channel 4. Yes, it is at the top of the list, and I see it there, and I keep going down to channel 7, and if the window isn't maximized with f11, I get the 40s anyway. This morning I got it when I selected the Nashville channel on my first try, and that button is at the bottom. But it's hit and miss at best although I can usually make it work. I do have the Nashville channel on right now, so I obviously got it. I will say that what I heard this morning on the 40s channel sounded bad, as far as sound quality, but I imagine it's the quality of the recordings they're playing there. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Kaufman Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2005 10:19 AM To: PC audio discussion list. Even without the software, Marty, I still record off XM what I want. I never used the XM software for that reason. It did not have a plug-in to record, not to my knowledge. What I found on the software was the abuility to change the channels using the computer and to read the song titles with Window-Eyes. As for other features, you could add stations to a Favorites list. RE: Looking for XM users
Jim, I'm using it on the PC but not well. The F11 seemed to help. When I first subscribed online a couple months ago, I could use it, though not well. My experience was at that time the farther down the list the channels you wanted were, the harder it was to activate them. But I was using insert-f5 to get a list of the buttons and doing it that way. Somewhere along the way, I stopped being able to activate the 70s channel. Which is near the top when you open the player. I would attempt to activate the button and it wouldn't do anything, and the next time I'd try to activate it, I would consistently get channel 4 which is the 40s channel, not at all what I wanted to listen to. The F11 seems to have helped. But it's tough to use on the PC, although the channels are good. I probably will purchase a unit once I get some cash and go looking for them. Casey, what is the model number of what you have purchased? You can get them all onli8ne but I don't know what they look like and how accessible the units are. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jim Portillo Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 9:52 AM To: PC audio discussion list. Re: Looking for XM users
Hi, Casey, the only problem, as I understand it, is that, with your xm unit, should they play a song that you're not familiar with, you can't see the title of that song, and I hesitated too long, and now, the xm pcr software is no longer being made, which helped us out immensely in that department. Just wished the powers that be wouldn't have been so greedy to try and stop people from recording what they were only going to hear later, then delete, which was the reason for the software production being stopped. Re: Looking for XM users
This is Casey from Wisconsin I have the boom box and the home kit and I only have on radio witch I can put in either the boom box or the home kit cause you can remove the receiver and put it in either the boom box or the home kit or in your car as well. I am totally blind and can use my x m radio with no trouble I can punch in the channel numbers for what channel I would like to go to. Cause the number keys on it are in one long row on my radio anyway from left to right. It goes 1 threw 0 straight across. So if you want channel 8 all is you have to do is push 00 8 and then you will goes to that channel. There is also a knob witch you can tune around your x m radio with also. I use that at times to. But I use the direct entry with the numbers a lot more. the remote has the numbers on it also and you can scan up and down with the rome bye using the up and down buttons on it just like when you are scanning threw you stations on your home stereo. I got my x m equipment at wal-mart. I am not an x m online user currently but have been thinking about it. So good luck and I hope that this at least gives you some help. Re: Looking for XM users
Hi Jim, Kathy Arnold here. Smile! Nice to meet you. I'm using XM Online. It's not all that accessible. Several of us have contacted XM, but haven't had much success. I have found a way to make it work somewhat. After logging in, I go to the XM online Player Window. Then I press f11 for full screen. Then I maximize the window by press "alt space" and the letter X. More buttons seem to be shown that way. The problem with the website is that it constantly refreshes. It can only be used with Macro Media Movie Flash turned on. Hope this helps. Kathy Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Re: Looking for XM users
Hello list..and to Jim..XM has..in my opinion..a good selection of programming. However..as far as my part goes..as far as the "on line" version goes"..I would tell you that..unless you have a little bit of vission, don't bother; it's just about totally inaccessable..at least with Jaws 3.7u; I have heard people that have newer versions of Jaws say that they have a little better luck with it. I have the "on line" version. But I have just enough vision that I can click on what I need (also sometimes using "Magic"..that I can use it. There is a list that you may want to join that could answer a lot of your questions; I am on that list..but don't know the exact address right at the moment. Hoope this helps.
