Hi.

The XM PCR is a device that receives XM Satellite radio. You hook it up to
your PC via a USB connection. Unfortunately they're not being made anymore.

2006-04-30 Thread Gary Wood
XM really sounds good! I was considering getting satellite coverage through
Dish Networks, and they use Serius, but that is moot, since I found that I
can't even use the dish, because there are too many trees in the back, where
the southern exposure is.

Sirius isn't good for anyone, unless you're a weightlifter or have a
 U-Haul
to bring it home in. The units are god-awful, the programming (other than
the NFL) stinks, and from the listening I've done, their DJ's are awful.
 XM
is lightyears ahead of Sirius as far as technology goes. XM has had the
MyFI and other portable receivers out since before Christmas of 2004...As
far as I've seen, Sirius STILL doesn't have a portable receiver that
actually gets live programming On the Go when not connected to a home or
car kit...Though, the new S50 may have changed that. Either way, they're
still way behind XM. Too much money spent on Hoo-Hoo Stern and not enough
 on technology/equipment.

 Just my opinion.

philosophy of having the sports all in the same group, and your fav
 channel--old-time radio let's say--doesn't get pre-impted like it does
 on
Sirius. I can imagine the frustratation of listening to Red Skelton,
 only
 to
have it interrupted with an Army Navy game. Also, Sirius only has their
old-time radio in half hour blocks. I have heard them many times cut an
 hour
program in half, only to play the second half hour whenever. I've heard
 a
number of first half shows on Sirius. Well, sorry about that, I

 happen
if I hooked the sat kit to the onboard card line-in and digitally
 connect

 would
probably be adequate for an external synth but nothing more than that
 as
 I
was hoping to use it with JFW if the latency weren't so bad.

Well, its adequate for most people. Most of your criticisms are very
subjective, for example your program one. There really isn't much
difference in the music programming except that XM has added 10 more music
channels with commercials. For the most news, talk and sports Sirius does
better than XM, although there are 1 or two channels that XM carries that I
wish Sirius did carry. For most sports you can't beat Sirius, although XM
does carry the MLB and the ACC basketball and football. I don't no how much
use people have for an on the go portable unit as most people use the
receivers in their cars or homes. Those of us who use it any where else
usually use boomboxes.

Cool! Is there anything to make Sirius accessible from a computer, to
control and the like? I'd really hate to have to play some of that
 talk
stuff through an FM transmitter as the mini system I have doesn't have
 a
line-in jack. It would be nice if such a kit had digital out to use
 with
 my
turtle beach montego so that TV could be recording through the analog
line-in while I listen to a show from the Sirius receiver. What would
 happen
if I hooked the sat kit to the onboard card line-in and digitally
 connect
that card to the turtle beach? The speakers connected to that card
 would
probably be adequate for an external synth but nothing more than that
 as
 I
was hoping to use it with JFW if the latency weren't so bad.

They did, but you can still activate/reactivate an XM PCR unit if necessary.

It is, as far as I know, the most accessible satellite radio unit, and if I
can find one cheap enough, I might just get myself an extra unit on Ebay,
sometime. . I like being able to know what's playing when I'm not online,
and since I'm still on dial up, by the time I get online to look at:

www.xm411.comm

the song has changed. But, that site does work very well for me.

If I remember right, they discontinued the XMPCR about a year and a half ago
because of some software some guy created which allowed users to set the
XMPCR to not only record songs/programs from XM as individual MP3's, but to
tag them with ID3 tags as well. The creator mainly did this for the
concerts that used to air on XM Live, but the RIAA freaked out because they
figured this would lead to more music being available for file-sharing and
felt XM wasn't doing enough to protect copyrights and such.

For those who want to see what's playing though, go to www.xm411.com. The
MacroMedia Flash movie thing seems to be mostly accessible. I've used it
successfully.

On a sidenote, as an XM subscriber, I've suggested that they do like the DMX
Music service that was on my digital cable used to do...If you clicked on a
channel, it'd show a list of the last ten songs that had played on that
channel. Since then, Comcast has switched to Music Choice, whose site, last
time I checked, is pretty uninformative. For those who ARE XM subscribers,
I made my suggestion of showing the last ten songs on each channel to the
head of music programming, Jon Zellner...Very cool guy. If you're an XM

Sure it is. I subscribe to both and I have to say that the only reason I
keep XM is the MLB and 1 or 2 other channels. I do like the way XM
organizes it's sports channels, but I have online access so I can keep up
with the Sirius sports schedules amd plus they have a lot more of it.
Sometimes I wish I could read the Sirius display, but then again sometimes I
wish I could drive. Reading the text display from my XM PCR is not a high
priority for me..

I evaluated both companies heavily before I chose XM...The only advantage,
IMHO, Sirius has is the NFL...Hopefully, XM will steal that away and Howard
Stern's contract will bankrupt the Little Doggy Company and leave XM as the
only one standing.

I admit, I don't have a lot of respect for Sirius...They don't even have a
portable unit that is capable of picking up live programming On the
Go...Unlike XM, who has a multitude of portable units...But I digress.

 Hello,

I had heard that immediately after the manufacturer
discontinued making them, their value on Ebay shot way up but

 Thanks.

Re: XM PCR

2006-04-26 Thread Ann
That is slightly inaccurate, and a terrible price. The PCR won't work with
absolutely all XM antennas, for starters. Also, when I purchased mine, the
antenna was included, and the price was around $55, including SH. The price
might be acceptable if they included the home antenna, but if you have to
buy it separately, it can cost around $35, just for the antenna alone. I
know this because I had to buy a replacement antenna after accidentally
breaking my own.

I imagine that as XM adds more channels that they will have to cut back to
preempting to save bandwidth. In this regard, Sirius is smarter. I think for
golf, they take Sporting News off, so I see the signs of it on the horizon,

I'm sure enough of these got around that they wouldn't cut them off or

I had heard that immediately after the manufacturer

One thing to consider before buying one is if you can activate it

will pay extra for the Internet stream.
I'm satisfied listening with my

Re: XM PCR

2004-09-18 Thread doc

NEW YORK - XM Satellite Radio Holdings will soon begin broadcasting some
of
 its stations
to subscribers over the Internet, fresh on the heels of the company's
 discontinuation
of a receiver for PCs that some users used to circumvent the music
 industry's crackdown
 on illegal file sharing.
Starting in early October, XM will charge $7.99 for a subscription to
listen
 to its
68 commercial-free music stations and about a half dozen other XM stations
 on the
Internet, the company said Wednesday. Those who already subscribe to XM's
 satellite
service, typically at $9.99 a month, can sign up for XM Radio Online for
an
 extra
 $3.99 a month.
Software currently on the market allows users to record music from
Internet
 radio
stations onto their computers anonymously - circumventing the music
 industry's much-publicized
crackdown on piracy. But XM said it is discouraging subscribers from doing
 so.
We don't condone that type of activity, and in fact that can
theoretically
 constitute
a violation of the user agreement of our service, said XM spokesman
Chance
 Patterson.
A program called TimeTrax fueled a surge in demand for XM's PCR receiver,
a
 PC-based
satellite-radio receiver that went on sale about a year and a half ago.
 Using the
PCR and TimeTrax, users can record multiple XM stations at once and store
 the programming
as individual songs in MP3 or WAV formats.
But the PCR was discontinued recently as XM prepared to launch XM Radio
 Online.
The PCR had been on the market for more than a year and a half, and so
 that's sort
of the typical life cycle anyway of some of these consumer electronic
 products anyway,
 said Patterson.
Some satellite radio insiders believe the PCR created a big buzz among
those
 looking
to copy tunes because the sound quality of music from satellite broadcasts
 is much
higher than music streamed over the Internet.
Still, analysts believe the chance to listen to about 70 music channels
and
 about
a half dozen other XM stations online could push more customers toward XM,
 which
has more than 2.1 million subscribers.
There are a lot of people who listen to radio during the workday and this
 is a way
to reach those types of consumers, said April Horace, an analyst with
Janco
 Partners.
XM has already built a good brand. So for people who want the same
content
 online,
it makes a lot of sense, said Michelle Abraham, an analyst with
 In-Stat/MDR. Especially
with more broadband connections and new devices that let you take the
 content from
your PC to your entertainment center and play it through your home stereo
 system.
XM is promoting the new service through a partnership with Dell, offering
 buyers
of Dell Inspiron notebooks and Dimension desktops a 30-day trial
 subscription to
 XM.
XM's competition, New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio, doesn't offer an
 Internet-only
subscription, but does lets subscribers listen to its 65 music stations on
 the Internet
at no extra charge, and offers 72-hour free trials on the Net.
It's been a significant reason why people have come to our service, said
 Sirius
 spokesman Ron Rodrigues.
XM shares rose 30 cents to $29.46 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, where Sirius
 shares
 fell 1 cent to $2.89.

Could they be used inside a house?

Ann, You really need the XM antenna.
They have twenty feet of wire on them.
Keep trying to find one for your PCR.

Yes, XMPCR is VERY speech friendly with Window-eyes 4.5 no other
modifications needed.

The PCR is a USB receiver you can connect to the PC and the software that
comes with it is screen reader friendly as far as this Window-Eyes 4.5
user
is concerned. Once the PCR is activated at XM, you have access to 120
stations. You can read the display with your screen reader.

Hank, I believe that Noel Roney might have the XMPCR scripts. I guess you can find his
email address by looking for it on the http://www.ACBRadio.org site in the main menu
archives.
