RE: archos USB cable?

2004-06-01 Thread rinty
Hi Nick,

First, there's no reason why you couldn't move the files to the hard
drive after you've recorded them. I don't however know if the recorder
has only a mice or whether it also has line-in recording. Assuming it
does have line-in recording, then you should be away. You could feed
the revox, (lucky ard, straight to the archos and record your
blues programme straight onto it. However you'd struggle with the
timed recording bit, but I'm sure you realised that.

OK, I've not been paying much attention to this thread. However, this may be
kind of neat... I had been using a Revox
Tuner and VCR to record our local NPR station's broadcast of "Blues Before
Sunrise"--a wonderful 5-hour program that
comes on every Saturday night. Would the "RockBox" (spelling?) software and
one of these units be able to handle a
project such as that, and do they provide a way to either move files to the
Hard Drive for editing and CD-Production for
one's future enjoyment?

Hi.

I believe what you do, is to load the firmware update, whether
rockbox
or not, into the player, and then "run" it using the archos's internal
memories. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm still trying to get hold of a
unit that will take the rockbox software.

Not quite. This is doable (it's called flashing the firmware), but
usually, what happens is that the firmware already in ROM checks the HD for
a file with a certain name. If the file exists, the firmware in that file is
loaded. If not, the firmware in ROM is used.

Nick's sort of right, in that the firmware wouldn't be affected by the
size of the drive, as it's written into ROM, not to the hard disk,
except for the installation file when you first copy it to the drive.

Hi.
The firmware is read from ROM inside the unit, and only later is any
new firmware loaded from the drive. The new drive would spin up, you could
put Rockbox on the drive, and it would work from there.

RE: archos usb cable?

2004-06-01 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
Yes, upgrading the HD can be done. See
http://www.mctubster.com/hd.html
That page is about the AJB 6000, but the principles apply to most of
the units. The controller should support up to 128 GB, which isn't available
in laptop drives at the moment, anyway. Note that the drive must be
formatted in FAT32 before it's installed.

Hi.
The players are going relatively cheaply, and they're quite durable
as these things go. Keep in mind, though, that a machine that has been
banged up will not necessarily last much longer in your hands if it's
already been used for a while. The main problem with Archos units is
not
durability so much as quality control from the factory. Were I you,
I'd ask
the age of the unit and make sure buyer protection is offered on the
unit.
Units that are sold "as is" should probably be avoided. BTW, when you
get
the unit, run a scandisk and see if there are any bad sectors on the
drive.
I've seen units which seemed to work but with their drives so riddled
with
bad sectors that if you try to put more than a few hundred meg on
them, they
won't read. Note also that you can replace the drive, but this, of
course,
requires buying a new laptop drive.
As for any unit with rockbox, it probably won't talk, since the
voice UI functionality has not yet been officially released. You'll
have to
install the voice, which isn't at all difficult.

Re: archos usb cable?

2004-05-27 Thread hank
I found a hole bunch of other ones with scratches and minor dings for like 5
bucks as the start bid.
how durable are these things?
the reason why I am asking is because some of the ones with minor scratches
actually work. and wasn't sure how durable these units are.
I found another one that is in working order and has been tested its a 6 gig
one
it all ready has rock box installed on it if i were to go with this one
should it come talking if I get it?
thanks
hank

RE: archos usb cable?

2004-05-27 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
First, Rockbox will work on this unit if it is as you describe it.
Secondly, you can get an USB cable for the unit from RadioShack. All
you need is an A male to A male USB cable. That is, the large flat
rectangular plug to the large flat rectangular plug. In most cases, you need
a cable that has a flat rectangular plug at one end and a squarish plug at
the other. However, in the case of the Archos (excluding the Recorder V2 and
FM recorder, they use mini A cables), you'll need a cable that has the same
type of plug at both ends, and that plug is rectangular, large, and flat.
