You first need to go to Recording Source and Parameters, which is the first
screen to open in the TR menu, and be sure that recording from software is
checked. Then within your volume control under properties you will see
controls for play or record. Under the recording properties you can only
have one item checked. The one you want is called What You Hear on the
Soundblaster Live card but may be called Mixer or something else with other
sound cards. If you tab through the dialog, though, itt will be the last
one you come to. Assuming that all the tabs are set correctly within the
Total Recorder dialog, you should not need to go into multimedia or mixer to
do this. Hope this makes sense.

Dean,
Could you please send me this file off list? I'd be curious to see whether
it will work with Windows 98 which is what I am still running, though I
anticipate upgrading to XP within the next few weeks. Do you think there is
anything about the operating system itself that makes a difference?

Also, I am looking to purchase a second soundcard when I upgrade because my
old Keynote synthe will probably not work with JAWS and XP and would
appreciate your input on this privately--I can't afford a hardware synthe on
my own right now and unless the state rehab folks authorize one to go along
with the JAWS upgrade I have requested it is not an option. Many thanks.

With wavepad, how do you record a stream or any other sorce without getting
the Jaws screen reader speech? How do you go about starting to record a new
file without messing up the last one? And is there a way to record with the
normalize feature? Thanks.(Chester)n

Re: Wavepad questions;:

Hello,
I have not used Wavepad but have used similar programs and am relatively
sure of your problem. If you use software speech, even though you may have
what is called a multichannel soundcard you cannot technically split the
sounds so that only the stream you want to record is heard. in other
words, it is not like having stereo headphones ... in fact, if you connect
headphones to your PC, this is the reason you cannot hear both sound sources
one in each ear. The only way to assure that your screenreader speech does
not bleed into the recording is either to unload it completely or to get a
hardware synthesizer or a second soundcard for use by your screenreader
exclusively. if you have already done these things, I'm not sure what your
problem is. Hope this makes sense.

Re: Wavepad questions;:

2005-02-25 Thread Dean Martineau

The one program which allows you to capture audio streams simultaneously
while using software speech, and does not capture the software speech at
all, is Total Recorder. Perhaps other software has this ability, but in my
experience, Goldwave and Sound Forge do not have it. Probably Wavepad
doesn't either.

In order for this to work with Total Recorder, under Settings off the
Options menu, the two check boxes for Use Directly have to be
checked. Also, there was a time when it didn't work on my system, and the
folks from HighCriteria sent me a .reg file which altered the registry so
that JFW and TR could coexist.
