Sorry Peter you are absolutely correct, I meant the opposite of what I
wrote. The nice thing is that the menus don't rap. So if you get to the
beginning or end of a menu, you're not confused by them automatically
starting at the beginning again.

When you say the menus wrap, do you mean they keep going around and around
the same group of options. Surely this would make it difficult if you were
not sure which one you were on. Better if they default to a certain
setting??

Yes, Jonathan, I've been following your r-1 explorations. The battery life
is a limitation, and so is the price. For what I'll do, I suspect the
IRiver will work for half the price or less, but we'll see. For that
matter, I'd love the new Plextalk, but that's a little expensive!

2005-11-01 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Dean, I was able to use it without difficulty using Window Eyes 5.5
beta 2. However, it did require using the mouse keys in order to use
most any function.

I installed the UMS firmware in order to be able to quickly and easily
transfer files and folders both to and from the Iriver.

Be advised that the UMS firmware upgrade file for the 799 is not the
same as the file for the 899.

One other consideration. If you opt to use the UMS firmware, you
cannot play Ogg/vorbis files if I understood the cautionary message on
the Iriver site correctly.

Hi Dean, have you looked into the Editor R-1? This will go all the way up to
44 kHz, 24 bit wave format and records onto compact flash. It's very
accessible because the menus rap. The controls are easy to use and it has
two stereo built-in microphones. I bought one from the good old Chirping Bat
for $400 and am delighted I did. My only concern with it is that it has
dreadful battery life, but I'll put up with this because I want good stereo
from the built-in mics and I don't want to introduce artifacts by recording
to MP3.

How unusable is the proprietary software for transferring files? Can a
competent user of the JAWS cursor or Window-Eyes mouse pointer use it? If
I get one of these, I would want to transfer the occasional recording to
the computer, not do a lot of transfers, and not use it as a mass storage
or listening device. If using the proprietary software means I can choose
to make higher-quality recordings, I might want to do so. I assume this
quality improvement also applies to the 799 or 899 though I haven't

Hi Dean
The internal mic on the 899 is pretty sensitive. Especially if you're
using the iriver with the automatic gain control turned on. If you're at
the very very back of the class then you might have a problem, but
otherwise, it's pretty good.

I'd go for a plextalk in half a second, but there's only one lil thing
keeping me from doing it. The price. wooh is it ever steep!
That's why i went with the iRiver and I'm extremely happy with its performance.

Yes, it does, but only if you use the standard firmware, with which the
recorder cannot be used as a universal mass storage device. With the
standard firmware, one has to use propriatary software to transfer files
from and to the iRiver. To use it as a USB drive, one has to use an
alternative firmware, also from iRiver. With that, one can only record
up to 96 KBPS.

The most accessible flash recorder is the new Plextalk PTR2. Flash makes
no noise, which is good, because one doesn'T have motor noise on ones
recordings. But it also causes a Problem, because one cannot hear,
whether the recorder does anything or not. Also the menus of these
recorders offer a lot of options, but for blind people, they make such a
device a bit difficult to use. A talking flash recorder like the PTR2
IMHO is a great solution.

Re: ifp 999

2005-11-01 Thread Tyler Wood
THat is desent enough for only one gb. What is the point of having huge
files? Also, the PNY vibe is pretty good in accesibility as far as I'm
concerned. But since you have already purchaised this one, stick to it, and
don't listen to people who tell you the recordings sound bad. They are
descent enough, and usually it is all you need.

There you go, Nick. You might want to research. (but, wait). My mp3 player
is *supposed* to go up to 320 KBPS .wav format, but..."that is with the
newer model." Said PNY.

Hi. How do the IRiver 799 or 899do in terms of recording with the internal
mike in a class or group setting? Are they tolerable for that?

Re: ifp 999

2005-10-31 Thread Chris Skarstad
and I maintain that 96k mp3, for Podcasting use, is just fine. Yes it's not
the greatest. Yes, it's not perfect. But hundreds of Podcasters, blind and
sighted are using these things and I've read many of the podcasting forums,
and not one single person has complained about sucky audio quality.
You have to think about where your audience is listening to these
recordings. Lots of them are on busses, trains and other forms of
transportation. With the outside noise, do you really think people are
gonna say oh! listen, he's sounding awful, he's got problems with his low
frequency range!
or, man he doesn't have a lot of highs in there.
If you're listening on a big expensive stereo system then yes, you'll
notice that, especially if your ear is trained to pick up those problems.
Now, to answer TJ's questions on recording.
This baby is menu driven. I've got the IFP-899, and getting to the voice
recorder is quite simple. Most likely when you turn it on you'll land in
the mp3 player. If you hold the iriver facing you, you'll see 3 buttons on
it, and a little joystick type of thing on the underside of the unit more
towards the right.

So to bring up the menu, you would find the third button to the right and
hold it down for about 5 seconds. Maybe even less than that, but we'll use
5 seconds as a good round number.
Now the menu should be up.
Next find the joystick, and if your 799 is anything like the 899, you'll
need to press the joystick to the right 2 times. Once to get to the fm
tuner, not sure if the 799 has that? and then once again to land in the
voice recorder.
In order to set the recording options, you will need some form of sighted
help, because initially, it's set to 32k, 2250 hertz mono. and that
*really* does lose.
So if you can set that up, i think you could produce some *reasonable*
recordings.

RE: ifp 999

2005-10-31 Thread André van Deventer
Hi

I bought the Iriver h320 a month or so ago for exactly the purpose of
getting good recordings and have never looked back. It's a bit pricy though
as it has a 20 gb hard disk. But it is quite accessible and easy to work
with.

I recorded a big part of an international congress on mental health and
deafness last week with the built-in mic at 64 kbps mono and was quite
surprised at the sound quality.

Regards

Andre

Any suggestions on a better one that can handle a nice full sound

Oy TJ! Surprised to see you here. Listen man, IFP-series, not worth your
time. Podcasters on the Blindcasting list disagree with me, but the fact
that it can only record in 96 K MP3 is the lose. Sorry, bad.
Thanks,
Nick

The 999 does not look any different from what I could tell from the 799 or
899, but it has a color screen. At least that is the only difference I
could tell, oh and the price was $300

I was tempted to try it, but found a 799 for under $140 so went that rout
for now.
