Hi, in my free version, i have lost the ability to choose what rate i want the conversion to be. in your paid version, can you choose the rate you want. brian.
RE: re switch
I still use the free version of switch; not sure...but I believe I can still change the bit rate! I have raised several files from 128 to 320 with no problem! Hi. Why are you increasing the bit rate from 128 to 320? You are not increasing the quality in any way, you will stillhave a file with 128kbs quality but the file will be larger without any increase of quality. Tom, you are absolutely not increasing the file quality by doing so. All you are doing is increasing the file size. RE: re switch
Hi. strictly speaking no, not in the file itself. A 128kbs quality file will always be a 128kbs quality file. You can downgrade from 128kbs but if you do that, you will never get a 128kbs quality again for that file. However what you can do is improve the quality of the reproduction in playback. If you play your music on the PC via a hi-fi system, you can dramatically improve the quality of the sound by using a DAC but they can be expensive, depending on just how much you are willing to pay for better quality. I always play my music from the PC through a DAC as it makes a huge difference. Hi. What contents do the files have? Is it music, or spoken word? If it is the spoken word then you could try reducing the bit rate and see if that will play because the spoken word doesn't have to be at 128kbs. On the other hand, if it is music then I don't really know the answer to that question. Have you tried converting a file from say, 320kbs to 128kbs and then played it? Hello Evan and list: You brought up that you can convert more than one file at a time with Switch (I also use this program) I had inquired about how to do this, but still don't really understand the steps! So since you brought that up, I'll ask my question again: how do you convert more than one file at a time with Switch? I am using the latest Jaws 15; Windows 7 Home 664 bit. It's completely accessible with my Window Eyes 8.4; almost as though it was written that way, although I don't know that for sure. It's also simple and fast. There is a five files at a time limit on the free version, but that is easy to work around. You can select and open many more than five files and then convert five at a time until you get them all. However, for convenience, and because I think they deserve it for writing such a simple and accessible product, I am probably going to buy it. It says that it will also extract audio from DVD's and video files, although I haven't tried this yet. If that works as simply and accessibly as the audio conversions I've done so far, then that will make it even more worth the price. Thanks for putting me onto this. Re: Switch Is Great
Will the program put itself as an option in the context menu? I've come in late to this thread, so where is this program obtained from? Thanks a lot. Matthew
Re: Switch Is Great
Yes it does put itself in the context menu. I just checked this with an audio file, so I'm sure about this. As to how to find it, just put Switch and NCH software into Google. When I did that, the first hit was the one I needed. Re: Switch Is Great
If you hit the alt key to go into the menus, just before the Open Output Folder, the first item is Add File(s). Go into that dialogue box and then tab over to where the folders are with your audio files, CDs or whatever. Go into whichever folder that has files you want to convert and select them all. Then tab over to the Open button and hit space on that. The files you selected will appear in a list just before that Open Output Folder button. In the free version, if you select more than five files from that list, one of two things will happen. It will either convert only the first five, or it will tell you that the free version only does five files at a time, and pop up a Buy button. Both have happened to me so far. So just select the first five, and when those are done, select the next five and so on until you've converted them all. After you've converted all of the files from that list, make sure you remove them before starting another batch. Just select them all, go into that menu that begins with Add File(s) and arrow down to Remove All. Hey /Tom, Do you know where the converted files are supposed to go? When I installed it, they were set by default to go to the Music folder, and I just left it that way for the present to test it out. But that's in Windows Vista, that may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus. Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need to check to see where it's putting the files it converts. You can still use the switch sound file convertor meaning converting files you just can't use the extra features that come with it you can still use the convertor. You won't however be able to use the ripper the sound stream nor other features that come with the program, accept the convertor. I hope this helps. Re: switch
I'm not John, but you can get Switch at http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html. The WMA to MP3 conversion is supported in the free version of Switch. there's a Switch Plus, but I don't know how much that costs since the free version does everything I want it to do. When you download Switch you get the features in Switch Plus as trial ware for a few weeks. You can find the price of Switch Plus and other information about the program at the above list. If these WMA files are DRM protected then you'll need to use a different program, such as Sound Taxi from http://www.sound-taxi.info/. Sound Taxi professional is $20 and Sound Taxi Platinum is $27. I think I went with Sound Taxi Platinum because it was faster and could do more conversions in parallel, but you should double check that. Anyhow, After purchasing Sound Taxi I played around on the net to see if there was a programme that would be easier to use. Unknown to me I seemed to have downloaded a programme called switch. I only discovered I had installed it when I went to play a music file and found on the file menu an option to convert this music file. I noticed also another new entry on the file menu, edit this file. also recorder. I have no idea how I managed to do this but when I activated each of these I had to download another component to activate them which I have done. I haven't had time to have a play with them yet, except the converting option. I tried to convert a protected file but it said it couldn't convert as it was protected but it was simple to go through the procedure including selecting the bit rate, right up to the convert button. On the face of it, they look easy to use with Jaws. You have all the normal options in the convert option as you do with Gold wave and in the edit option theirs all the normal stuff such as mix etc. This programme is free and I haven't paid a penny for it and there is no indication that I will have to in future. AS I said, I don't know where I got this. The program is called Switch plus and I suspect I got it when I downloaded a trial version of Tunebite. Tunebite is another programme like Sound Taxi for decoding DRM encoded music files. If I have time in the next day or so then I'll have another search to see where I got it and let you know or you can do a google search for switch music converter. Re: Switch Tunebite
Well, I'm in a rush now, so I'll look into this later, but my 21 days ran out on Switch months ago, and I'm still using it just fine. I think the 21 days is a trial of the full version that you would get if you paid for it. After that, it still works just fine in a limited way. That being said, it has never not done what I've asked it to, but I usually just convert AVI, WMV, ..., to MP3. abarney wrote: Hi Christopher, the free switch, will only last 21 days. Re: Switch Tunebite
From the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for Switch at http://www.nch.com.au/switch/faq.html: Q. Is the Switch Converter really free? Yes, we offer a free version of Switch. Switch Plus requires the purchase of a license. Using the Plus version allows you to do things like save to extra file formats (see the Switch help documentation for further details) and utilize the Command Line Tool. The free version of Switch also has the additional features of Switch Plus enabled for a 14-day free trial after the software is first installed. If you choose not to purchase the Switch Plus license upgrade at the end of the free trial period, the advanced features will be disabled but the standard Switch features will continue to work.
