[PD] PureCorpsV1 update

2007-10-24 Thread Chris McCormick
Hi all,

Remember the PureCorpsV1 project?

Well it's exactly half way through now. Progress has been slow and even
halted for a while when I got very busy, but we're back on track now
and I will try to push the second half through much quicker.

Damian Stewart pointed out to me recently that this would work much
better if it was automated somehow so that I was not the bottleneck in
the system, and he's quite correct. It would be cool to develop some
kind of framework for automating the exquisite-corps patching
methodology.

Anyway, I will try to post to the pd-list about it as we draw near to
the end.

Best,

Chris.

This is probably almost exactly the same as Frank's since we made it
together if I recall correctly (or maybe I just stole his patch and
changed the colors :) )

yeah, since you ask, i downloaded it as well on my server and i get the

hmmm, I have no idea, what the problem could be. I just would like to
solve it, because it keeps me from working. I know 2 other people who
have (or had) the same problem.
did you delete the file from your cache before re-downloading? did you
try it from different computers? sorry, I don't want to bother you with
that problem too much.
it is not the browser, because I tried several browsers. maybe it is
some os x issue, but I also had the problem when I downloaded to the
windows machine and transfered it to osx. (btw. the checksum did not
change when copying from windows to mac...)
It also makes no difference if I download from wifi or over cable.
It can be the network connection, although I also had the problem when I
was on another net.
actually I have no idea...

if it is a mirror, then why should the checksum change??? it just checks
if the file was changed during transport, and every change is usually an

Hey I'm really sorry about that. What I meant was that I didn't remember at
all how much time had elapsed between the bug report and the post to the ml
and that I sent the two with two different purposes; I'm sure you're right
about the timings. I thought you were complaining about my writing to the
mailing list too soon (while you were complaining about almost the opposite)
and I tried to explain it was not out of impatience.
Surely I hadn't received (read, to be more precise) the automatic
notification of the bug tracker, since (I now realise) my email address in
the bugtracker is out of date, so I read that one much later; and I didn't
check out the tracker before I posted the mail for the reasons I already
mentioned (and also because I thought I would receive a notice via email in
case anyone replied).

So, with the hope to close this thread (or at least the non-technical
discussion), I really apologize if I offended anyone.

i on not on one nor the other, i am on linux and just downloaded it for
checksum. i didn't install and try it.

btw: why do you download 0.39-extended from autobuild, when it was
officially released just a few days ago? does it contain changes
already?

yo, got the same checksum, when downloading from:
http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pure-data/Pd-0.39.3-extended-macosx104-i386.dmg

it seems, that the problem is on your side (either your network or
computer or ..)

if you still have troubles getting a proper image, i could provide you
the same file from a different url, if you think, that helps you.

Re: [PD] still dmg error with pd-extended

2007-10-24 Thread marius schebella
I just downloaded the file from the link you proposed and got exactly
the same checksum
marius-schebellas-computer:~/Desktop/pd3 marius$ md5
Pd-0.39.3-extended-macosx104-i386.dmg
MD5 (Pd-0.39.3-extended-macosx104-i386.dmg) =
2ea3c667de64cd13e8449fdd0bb24da1
I can open it, everything fine.
but the file I was talking about before is from the autobuild farm.
http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/2007-10-24/
exaclty this one:
http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/2007-10-24/Pd-0.39.3-extended-macosx104-i386.dmg
or, if you are on a windows machine, then this one:
http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/2007-10-13/Pd-0.39.3-extended-windowsxp-i386.exe
can you check that, too?

i am not very sure, if i am correct, but i think, you cannot be sure,
that you downloaded the exact file twice, since sourceforge directs you
to a different mirror, each time you click download. i couldn't install
and test it, but here download seemed ok, though i got again a different
md5 cheksum.

from:
http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pure-data/Pd-0.39.3-extended-macosx104-i386.dmg

Ah. I'm so bad at documenting my projects, but I'm insanely busy right now with
teaching. Believe me - I'm quite profoundly behind with many things, but will
get around to writing proper help files at some point.

And yes, the gui. I needed to get to this point because I'd really like a more
efficient gui, but my solution will be for now to make versions that are
gui-less as well. The gui is only needed for composing the patterns and stuff -
in performance it's not necessary. So - perhaps 0.2 will have this feature. I
had to get 0.1 finished first.

Wouldn't it be nice to switch the gui on and off at will? Now there's a thought.
Best,
Ed

Re: [PD] latest gem version for windows

2007-10-24 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Yeah, the Gem in Pd-extended/Windows is still a binary, it's not
built from source every night... It would be nice if it was, that
means porting the Gem build to MinGW. I think porting the ./
configure stuff to MinGW shouldn't be hard. A bunch of extra libs
will probably have to be compiled under MinGW as well.

thanks steffen,
I tried to download with different browsers, but always have problems.
is it because of my internet connection?
I never had such problems before.
do you have any idea what the problem could be?

[PD] Autobuild 20071024 debian testing

2007-10-24 Thread Olivier Heinry
Hi hans,

here is my report after trying to install the latest auytobuild for
debian i386 unstable:

the liglsl0 package was not installed, which was quite surprising since
I compiled PD 0.40.2 a few weeks back and since that had the required
glsl devlibs installed. After installing it, the installation proved
partially successful.

Bye!

Re: [PD] still dmg error with pd-extended

2007-10-24 Thread marius schebella
maybe I was to fast in saying that the installer works. it seems that
some fo the downloaded file were corrupted.
I tried it 3 times, and every time I get different errors:

C:\Programme\pd\bin\pd.dll

An error occured while trying to copy a file:
The source file is corrupted.

and also pgmout-help.pd, babelfish.blm, homer.avi,
pd-externals-HOWTO.pdf, midr-mjpeg.mov
(that was the first time)

the second time gave me these corrupted files:
logo100.gif, tcltk.pd, adv1.mcp, poke~.dll
mass3D.dll, inspace.dll

and then I got these problems:
msvcp71.dll. pd.dll, tk84.dll, G08.reverb.pd, env--help.pd,
miadr-mjpeg.mov, nixon.aiff, lib_x_midi.dll, framespect~.dll,
pd.window.pd, list2int.dll

is that a problem of my internet connection, or has the server problems?
marius.

ok, I just saw that pd-extended has a gem version from 12/2006. still,

[PD] latest gem version for windows

2007-10-24 Thread marius schebella
hey,

it seems the latest gem version for windows is from 09/2006 (found on
gem.iem.at/release and also included in pd-extended)?
I tried some of my shader programs and gem crashed. the mac version is
from july 2007 and works (although that version has some other issues
(wrong colors...) and atm I cannot test the latest autobuilds).

I think some changes were made since 2006, so it would be nice to see a
newer windows version. Are there newer gem binaries for windows?

btw, I also get this error with

and I checked my hardware (harddisk) for errors and permisssions ... no
errors.
Is there any other possibility to get the 10/13 autobuild? thanks.

It becomes even more strange, because I also get an error on my windows machine!
when I save the file Pd-0.39.3-extended-windowsxp-i386.exe and try to
open it, the installer says "The setup files are corrupted. Please

but, if I don't save the file, but run the installer directly from the

does anybody have similar problems?

Hm, what's unreliable there? I've posted an abstraction here some time
ago (2005?) in an archive controller.tgz, that uses DS and should work
out of the box. I can dig up the newer version if you like, which
works without metros, but may not work with the old version of Pd

I am at leat. I seam to work alright. Just need to [import ekext].
It's big for a small screen. I've only tried the demodrum one as it
had a 'load something that make it play sounds' button. I have almost
no idea what's going on. It's fairly complex. It uses only 17% cpu
for the pd process but the gui uses something about 95%.

Thanks for sharing, Ed.

Re: [PD] Spectrum graphing amplitude problem

2007-10-24 Thread Ed Kelly
My theory is that the brain automatically 're-frames' the image when you move
your eyes. Here's a point - the eyes never move smoothly unless tracking a
moving object to keep it stationary within the field of vision. They always
dart about.
Cinema would not work if our eyes were digital, since the frame rate of our
eyes would go out of sync with the pictures. Persistence of vision is why
cinema works. Projectors (35mm) show each frame three times, so that there is
no flicker to the image, so if there is a 'sampling rate' of the eye then it is
certainly higher than the 72 flickers-per-second.
Flourescent gas discharge lamps flicker, albeit at a very high speed, so this
explains the aliasing effect. This is a great way of explaining aliasing (like
cartwheels in a 'Western' movie) because the light is 'sampling' the bicycle
wheel.
My bicycle wheels are so buckled that this becomes very confusing to look at ;-)

Going back to the spectrum graphing amplitude problem - there should be a way
to use peakit~ and build a graphical data structure-based array around its
findings. I think data structures are the way forward for this sort of thing
since they represent information in an abstract graphical way.
examples/ekext/peakit-listmoses.pd (but there's no graphical array yet)
Chun did a cool thing - it would be interesting to know how the video was made.
Look up 'chun lee glass cloud' on youtube. Gem?

Best,
Ed

hey, what do you know, there's even a wiki page on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagon-wheel_effect

Vision is in fact not purely analog. Although I don't necessarily
think the "discrete frame" theory mentioned in the page is true, there
is a counterexample. When your eyes make a saccade (fast movement),
there is no blurring. There is an inhibition of the movement in
between the two visual scenes.
There is also nystagmus. Even when images appear perfectly clear, the
eye moves in random oscillations. When researchers (I forget the
citation/can't find it) used an eye camera to track random
oscillations and corrected for the movement (creating a static
retinotopic image), the perceived image disappears. There may be
something involved in correcting for nystagmus that renders an image
in a series of apparently still frames. I don't know for sure.

I'm interested to know if the patches are loading OK on OSX (you're running a
Mac Book right?). When you load the demo song, the [patches\ number box on the
BIG drum synth should read something like 128 or 120 (but not 0). If not, try
loading from the drum synth load button - patches are in the /meta-studio/pat
folder and the file is something like sinoiseclickr_demo.txt.

Dude.
You'd find it in "def FontDialog init", if you bothered to look there.

I didn't want to look that pissed, but I sure did anyway.

What I want to say is that a lot of problems of PureData have already been
solved in DesireData, and for something of the order of one line of code,
you can't possibly have copyright/licensing problems if you just copy it.

I don't really need to do anything to keep any potential competitive
advantage of DesireData. The main protection I have is some people's
unwillingness to grep the source code.

I'm saying that in the interest of everybody. Now if I only had a
consistent work schedule for DesireData instead of orbiting around the
rest of the work that is left to be done... this issue could be moot.

My 2.07 cents.

wrong.
you just need to edit the pd.tk file which is read and interpreted at
runtime by the tcl/tk-interpreter (wish on w32)
the only thing you have to do is restart pd...

> I don't have the skills to do that right now, sorry.

it is very simple: download the patch and open it with a decent
text-editor (notepad might have problems with the carriage returns)
any line prefixed with a "-" is to be removed from the original source,
and line prefixed with a "+" is to be added.
the lines without prefixes are there to give you a context (e.g. if you
have already applied another patch (e.g. because you are not using
pd-vanilla's pd.tk) the line-numbers might differ, but the context will
hopefully be the same)

what you basically have to do is change the 2 occurences of
"-%D/abs(%D)" to "(%D>0)?:-1:1" (or something like this, i don't
remember exactly)

> Btw, I am using Windows version of PD (vanilla 0.40.2), sorry I didn't
> mention it in the report (i usually do, it was an oversight).

no big problem; i imagined something like this :-)
the problem can only occur on w32 and os-x (linux/freebsd uses different
code here that cannot divide by zero)
