Re: [PD] arpeggiator
this is how i order notes in a table: when a new note is input, read through the table until you reach either a 0, or a number higher than the new note. if you reach a zero, then put the new note in place of the zero. if you reach a higher note, then shift every remaining note 1 step forward in the table, and then put the new note in its place. if a note is turned off, then read through the table until you find that note, and then move every remaining note 1 step back in the table. fill the end of the table with a zero. usually you don't want more than about 10 notes for an arpeggiator, so the table reading will occur almost instantaniously. also, for an arpeggiator, you really want to have an 'octave' function to really get some movement happening you can do it very simply by triggering a counter that goes up in 12's. so for just one octave, the counter always stays at zero, for two octaves it goes 0,12,0,12,..for 3 octaves 0,12,24,0,12,24..etc a slider for the gate time is also good. make a slider from 0.001-1 where 1 keeps the note on for an entire beat, and 0.001 turns the note off almost immediately. then, you want to have a radio controlling the speed of the arpeggiator...1/16 beats, 1/8 beats, 1/4 beats...etc so that will give you a basic arp, which will sound ok in a 70's disco kind of way. make it into an abstraction. the key to making it sound REALLY good is to use another arp or simple sequencer to modulate the settings of your first one. if the speed is always set to 1/8 notes it's going to sound really rigid, so make another simple sequencer to rhythmically change the speed. wha-lah! now instead of metronomically boring 16th notes, you get 1/4 notes, 1/8th notes, and trills of 1/32 notes too. and you can do the same thing to modulate the octave setting. that's as far as i've got, and it sounds great. but i just had one other idea while typing this: use another arpeggiator to send notes into the original arp. also, arps are good to use in place of lfo's. in conclusion. arps are awesome. you can build them with the most basic pd objects, and they sound wicked. ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list

Re: [PD] getting cue/loop points from WAV files
the workaround i have at the moment is that audacity lets you export cue points as a .txt file. As long as you don't add any labels to your cue points, then that text file contains a list of cue point times which you can read directly into an array in pd. in audacity, do the following: Project - New Label Track select your cue points (Add Label at Selection) File - Export Labels however, a pd object to read the cue points from .wav or .aiff files would be very useful. from what i have been reading, all the cue points are stored as a single line of data in the header of the file. here's a cue point reader as a supercollider patch: http://www.create.ucsb.edu/pipermail/sc-users/2006-November/029666.html ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] settable send (pd 0.40+)
i guess it would help for debugging of newer patches on older versions of pd. if you create [send x] and feed it [symbol x] [symbol y] symbol z], then it will always send to x in older versions of pd, so it might be harder to find the source of error. however, if you just create [send], it will send to nowhere, so it will be easier to track down the point where message flow breaks down. another related question, do receives also have this set function in pd 0.40? ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list

roman, sorry i use gmail, which has a nice threaded view for mail. i forgot that not everyone gets this function. derek wrote: Time stretching is usually done one of two ways, both of which involve a kind of windowing of the array: you can use an FFT analysis (of which there are examples which come with PD), or you can use granulation. In general, FFT is more accurate, but more expensive. Granulation is used to squeeze the samples in Ableton Live into the BPMs/divisions that one wants. It can also be fairly accurate, the smaller the grains, the more grains are used and the the more overlaps the grains have. Check my ParticleChamber abstraction for a use of windowed array granulation for time domain manipulation independent of pitch. http://www.puredata.org/Members/derek/Particlechamber.zip/ http://www.puredata.info/Members/derek/screenshot.png and then i wrote: i'd love it if someone would actually explain the ableton process fully or code it in pd. everyone always just says 'they do it like this, it's easy'but no-one actually makes it as far as a patch. to which derek replied: ParticleChamber does it. The only thing missing is an adjustment to the pointer to make the sample loop, and maybe some math to calculate divisions of BPM. It's easy ;-) and then i enthusiastically said: cool!!! Can you post a simple patch that does abelton-esue time-stretching on a loop? derek came and dashed all of my hopes with: Not right now, but if you look at the subpatch connected to the [grid] object in ParticleChamber, you can probably work it out yourself. afaik, you can't change the actual colour of the array, but you can put a canvas of equal size behind the array for a coloured background. ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list

Re: [PD] fft beginner question
so, i don't know too much about fft, but here's what i can gather. hopefully some people who actually understand it can explain where i am wrong: fft analyzes a 'block' of samples. a block is just a section of consecutive samples. pd's default block size is 64 samples, which is why you get 64 numbers for each FFT analysis in pd with default block size. the maximum frequency fft analysis will give you is half of your sampling rate. for a block size of 2, the only frequency FFT tells you about is half the samplerate (SR/2) for a block size of 4, FFT can then tell you about SR/4 and 2xSR/4..so, for a sampling rate of 44100hz, you'd get info on 11025 and 22050 hz for a block size of 8, you can now find out about 4 frequencies: SR/8, 2xSR/8, 3xSR/8, 4xSR/8 (ie, 5512, 11025, 16538, 22050) for a block size of 16, you can find out about SR/16, 2xSR/16, 3xSR/16, 4xSR/16, 5xSR/16, 6xSR/16, 7xSR/16, and 8xSR/16 and so on...always until you reach half the sample rate. ..i think you also get info on 0hz, and i guess that is also somehow important when it comes to resynthesis, but i'm not too sure if or how or why. once you get up to a block of 64 or 128 samples or more, you start to get pretty good info on the basic waves which make up that block of samples. i'm really not sure about this next bit...but i think the reason why you get a real part and an imaginary part is because the analysis finds the angle between one sample and the next one. ..if it's a steep angle, then that's a high frequency...if it's a flatter angle, then that's a lower frequency. and the way to find an angle is derived from pythagoras' equationa^2+b^2=c^2 so...that works fine when the samples lie above the zero axis...but when they go below the zero axis, then to get the angle you have to take the square route of a negative number. hence the imaginary part. i could be way off the mark here,.,,,but that's just what i could guess. pd uber pro's.. how wrong am I? ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] [Pd] Writing subpatch contents, was Re: [Csnd] Writing subpatch contents
so why not just have 8 'sandboxes' all within one abstraction and then just save that every time you edit it? i always try to think within what i know pd can do..and then at a last resort look to externals or exotic patching fixesbut i don't think you're at the last resort yet. there must be a simple way. ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] [Pd] Writing subpatch contents, was Re: [Csnd] Writing subpatch contents

Re: [PD] [Pd] Writing subpatch contents, was Re: [Csnd] Writing subpatch contents
yeah, but what chuck wants to know is WHICH objects are in his subpatch. so...if he puts a slider, 2 number boxes and 3 arrays in a subpatch, he needs something that will tell him that the subpatch contains a slider, 2 number boxes and 3 arrays. and then in another subpatch there might be 6 number boxes all connected to a [pack] object going into a [send] ssaad will only tell you the values OUTPUT by these objects...but it won't tell you WHICH objects are in place. ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] fft beginner question
ah cheers frank, thanks for clearing a lot of that up. you do really good explainations. The main reason we use complex numbers in electronic music is because they magically automate trigonometric calculations. We frequently have to add angles together in order to talk about the changing phase of an audio signal as time progresses (or as it is shifted in time, as in this chapter). It turns out that, if you multiply two complex numbers, the argument of the product is the sum of the arguments of the two factors. so, is that where 'fast' fourier transform comes from then? ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] fft beginner question
cos^2+sin^2=1 ah! so, actually the FFT doesn't HAVE to use imaginary numbersbut they are just used because the complex-number system is two-dimensional and that signals to be analysed are presumed to be two-dimensional. They are decomposable into a sum of circular trajectories every day a bit more of this falls into place. ___ PD-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
