[PD] PD/Purr-Data object for Sensel Morph

2020-07-14 Thread Peter Nyboer
Just wanted to let you know there’s an object for the Sensel Morph
that brings multi-touch, multi-pressure data from the
Morph into PD as a list. It’s in Deken and Purr Data. Here’s a demo video that
shows the example patches in action:
https://youtu.be/mbv8dapqi2Y

If you are interested in the Morph, feel free to hit me up for
academic/education discounts at pe...@sensel.com .

Enjoy!

Re: [PD] Pd-list Digest, Vol 183, Issue 6

2020-06-01 Thread Peter Nyboer
Thanks IOhannes and Max.
Since I’m not a PD pro, please confirm this works as intended:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EmPlEih_DRI9k_FmdvucsfcG0fbRCquk/view?usp=sharing

I’d like to publish this for posterity, so I want it to be as accessible as
possible. It’s a basic DMX light control example with some explainer text.
Between this and Max examples, it took a lot of digging around to figure this
out because I couldn’t find an example like this in my native tongue!
I’d like to save the next person some time, as it’s pretty valuable.

That said, I’d like to get this on puredata.info as that seems like the most
permanent repository, though I could also put it up on my github.

Peter.

[PD] paths on Catalina? problems with list-abs from deken

2020-06-01 Thread Peter Nyboer
A bit of a noob question here…
I recently installed list-abs from deken on a vanilla PD 50-2 on macOS
Catalina.
My patch wasn’t able to find the abstractions until I explicitly added the path
~/Documents/Pd/externals/list-abs to the Paths preferences. Is that to be
expected?

I haven’t tried this, but I had never heard of it until recently and seems
worth a look.

I’m not looking for free work - I’d be happy to do it as trade for gear or a
mix of pay and gear. Whatever works. I would want to spec out the behavior and
have some assurance of continued support for it available.

[PD] Sensel Morph object development

2019-06-09 Thread Peter Nyboer
Hi All,

I’m wondering if anyone is interested in creating an object for PD for the
Sensel Morph. There’s an API in C on github
 with details in our guide
.
There is an object for Max that works quite nicely - it would be great to get a
similar object for Pure Data. Send me a mail at pe...@sensel.com
and we can figure out details.

[PD] Pd & massively multi-channel wi-fi speakers

2019-02-18 Thread Peter Nyboer
I did as project some time ago with the NextThing CHIP computer attached to
speakers. Each of 8 CHIPs ran a PD synth patch, and was attached to a speaker.
One CHIP was attached to a Livid DS1 MIDI controller, which broadcast commands
over the network to all the PD patches.
Each channel strip of the DS1 (1 fader and 5 pots) controlled the synth patch
on each CHIP, so I had 8 channels of synthesis.
In short, it was a WiFi spatial synth. I never really got to exploit this
system in its final form, but I did test it all and it worked quite nicely. It
wasn’t terribly complicated, and since the CHIP was pretty cheap, it wasn’t
terribly expensive. You can still find them on Amazon for $20 or so.

I should probably find a grant and residency at some Italian castle or
something so I can finish this project :)

Funny - I had a somewhat tangential thought this morning. Something to the
effect of it being easier to deploy libpd on embedded devices. I haven’t really
looked into it very deeply, hence my uncertainly about whether or not it’s
easy, but I know it’s not “juzt 1 klik!” (oh, yeah, I went there).

Re: [PD] C.H.I.P. & Pd Vanilla 0.47

2016-11-16 Thread Peter Nyboer
Thanks for all the input on the PureData and C.H.I.P. install!

The docs at http://docs.getchip.com/chip.html
had build instructions because, at the time
of writing and after trying to find a definitive solution, that seemed to be
the most reliable way to install PureData vanilla 0.46. The easy way of `sudo
apt-get install puredata` installed a much older version of PD.

Besides, you gotta cut a dude a break - documenting PureData installation in
the main documentation for this SOC was not exactly a mandate. Also, note that
the documentation is a github repo, so if there’s anything that seems vital or
incorrect, you can make a pull request at https://github.com/getchip/CHIP-Docs/
and we can roll in the changes.

I’ve updated the docs and my ‘newchipsetup’ scripts
https://github.com/nyboer/newchipsetup
to use the sources at https://packages.debian.org/stretch/puredata
, per Ioannes’s suggestion.

Best,

Peter

[PD] debian package for 0.47?

2016-10-25 Thread Peter Nyboer
I’m trying to install the latest and greatest on a C.H.I.P using a package
manager. I followed these instructions to add the puredata` repo:
https://puredata.info/docs/faq/debian

but when I simulate the install with:

apt-get -s install puredata

it appears that I would be installing 0.46:
Conf puredata-gui (0.46.2-1 Debian:8.6/stable [all])
Conf puredata-doc (0.46.2-1 Debian:8.6/stable [all])
Conf puredata-extra (0.46.2-1 Debian:8.6/stable [armhf])
Conf puredata-utils (0.46.2-1 Debian:8.6/stable [armhf])
Conf puredata-dev (0.46.2-1 Debian:8.6/stable [all])
Conf puredata (0.46.2-1 Debian:8.6/stable [all])

Is 47 available via apt, or is 46 the latest I can get through this method?

Thanks,

Re: [PD] LibPd on microcontroller

It has SPI, no i2s, so that makes the traditional DAC shield impossible. But,
USB is cool. You can use the cheepie Cmedia dongles if you want

or a higher quality thing like this

I2C is not really suitable for audio.
In theory, you could bitbang i2s over GPIO, but you’d be in the weeds in not
only building a driver, but probably having timing issues, too.

Not sure how cheap is cheap, but the CHIP from Next Thing Co is $9 + shipping
http://getchip.com and has audio, wifi, and bt built-in.
I’ve been running PD on it. There’s still some issues with duplex audio in PD,

Yes, that is what I did, more or less. Complete details are here:
http://docs.getchip.com/#building-and-installing-puredata-pd-on-chip
But in brief:
./autogen.sh
./configure --disable-portaudio --disable-portmidi --no-recursion
cd src
make clean
make -f makefile.gnu
sudo make -f makefile.gnu install

So I didn’t specifically build such that the pd extras are installed in in
/usr/local/lib, that was a result of the make process.
"which pd” returns “/usr/local/bin/pd”, in case you are curious. I’m not
running it from the build directory.

HOWEVER, I now realize the folly of my ways. In order to get the extra objects
built I need to run “make install” from ~/pd-0.46-7/extra/ directory, not from
the “extra” directory in /usr/local/bin.

Anyway, my puredata is now happily working with expr, sigmund~, choice, et al.
Thanks for the help!

Peter

[PD] building extras on arm7 (CHIP)

2016-04-06 Thread Peter Nyboer
I’ve built PD vanilla for a small linux computer (Next Thing CHIP) from source.
It runs fine, but I don’t have the ‘extra’ objects like expr, choice, etc. I’m
having a problem building the ‘extras’. If I
cd /usr/local/lib/pd/extra
and try “make install” I get an error
chip@poch:/usr/local/lib/pd/extra$ make install
cd .. && make  am--refresh
make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/local/lib/pd'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'am--refresh'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/local/lib/pd'
Makefile:378: recipe for target '../aclocal.m4' failed
make: *** [../aclocal.m4] Error 2

This seems like it should be pretty straightforward, but I guess I’m missing
something?

Re: [PD] Fullscreen, not GEM, just a PD screen?

2016-04-06 Thread Peter Nyboer
The kiosk TCL plugin works a charm.
https://puredata.info/downloads/kiosk-plugin

I also found some things in the hcs externals
https://puredata.info/downloads/hcs that
worked, but the kiosk plugin was a more elegant solution.

[PD] Fullscreen, not GEM, just a PD screen?

2016-04-05 Thread Peter Nyboer
A simple, somewhat newbie question: Is it possible to display a regular PD
window in fullscreen, or position it to fake fullscreen, on Linux? It seems
like it should be trivial to hide the application menu bar, but I have yet to
find anything - “fullscreen pure data” is polluted by GEM!!

[PD] GEM via deken in vanilla on OS X 10.11

2016-03-15 Thread Peter Nyboer
I tried installing GEM via deken in vanilla 0.46.7 on OS X El capitan
("Platform detected: Darwin-x86_64-32bit”).
A lot of the externals are not loading, things like alpha, rotate, color,
square, etc. Some do load. Is this expected behavior? Should I build from
source instead and install manually?

Thanks so much for that! I’ve been enjoying its fruits recently.

Re: [PD] How's Pd limited?

2016-02-22 Thread Peter Nyboer
I also dislike Send and Receive, but end up using them in pd. I don’t like that
they are hard to keep track of (I see the receive, where’s the send?). I guess
$0 does clear up the global issues, but it feels hacky. I managed to get rid of
them in Max by relying on the pattr and pattrstorage objects to send messages
around. Probably a bit slower, but it ended up being much cleaner.

Re: [PD] pd for c.h.i.p

2016-01-19 Thread Peter Nyboer
Yes, I'm using it.
Here’s an example I cooked up
https://www.hackster.io/11802/c-h-i-p-midi-arpeggiating-synth-e311ab

I’ve also had the unique privilege of putting a variation of this synth on 8
CHIPs and using a 9th to act as a wifi access point and MIDI-to-OSC translator
for a Livid DS1. Don’t mean to gloat: I just wanting to let you know what’s
possible.
The patch in that post uses about 25% CPU on CHIP (about 8% on my 2010 MBP). I
have tried building PD from scratch on CHIP using Miller’s source, but it
didn’t seem to benefit much over just using what was in the repo.

[PD] [sharing] Controlling Audio Settings with a Message

2015-12-14 Thread Peter Nyboer
Hi all, new here. I recently was trying to figure out a way to disable audio
input from a message, and I couldn’t find it. Fortunately, I had some help from
Tom Erbe, who wised me to this nugget:
;
pd audio-dialog
3 0 0 0
0 0 0 0
3 0 0 0
1 0 0 0
41000 25 0 64

This follows the same pattern as the variables declared in dialog_audio.tcl:

audio_indev1
audio_indev2
audio_indev3
audio_indev4
audio_inchan1
audio_inchan2
audio_inchan3
audio_inchan4
audio_outdev1
audio_outdev2
audio_outdev3
audio_outdev4
audio_outchan1
audio_outchan2
audio_outchan3
audio_outchan4
audio_sr
audio_advance
audio_callback
audio_blocksize

Use integers to select the items in the input and output menus, and use 0 and 1
to enable/disable the input devices and output devices.
In hopes that a present or future Puredata user finds this useful!!!
