CPasted from the Writer's Alamanc by Garrison Keillor... I think there's something in here for most everyone... -- Poem: Peace by C. K. Williams, from Love About Love © Ausable Press, 2001. Reprinted with permission. Peace We fight for hours, through dinner, through the endless evening, who even knows now what about, what could be so dire to have to suffer so for, stuck in one another's craws like fishbones, the cadavers of our argument dissected, flayed, but we go on with it, to bed, and through the night, feigning sleep, dreaming sleep, hardly sleeping, so precisely never touching, back to back, the blanket bridged across us for the wintry air to tunnel down, to keep us lifting, turning, through the angry dark that holds us in its cup of pain, the aching dark, the weary dark, then, toward dawn, I can't help it, though justice won't I know be served, I pull her to me, and with such accurate, graceful deftness she rolls to me that we arrive embracing our entire lengths. Literary and Historical Notes: Today is a big day in the history of the English language. On this day, in 1066, William the Conqueror of Normandy arrived on British soil. Having defeated the British in the Battle of Hastings and on Christmas day he was crowned the King in Westminster Abby. At the time the British were speaking a combination of Saxon and Old Norse. The Normans, of course, spoke French, and over time the languages blended. To the Saxon word house came the Norman word mansion. To the Saxon word cow came the Norman word beef and so on. So the English language now contains more than a million words, one of the most diverse languages on earth. Cyril Connelly wrote, The English language is like a broad river ... being polluted by a string of refuse-barges tipping out their muck. But Walt Whitman said, The English language is the accretion and growth of every dialect, race, and range of time, and is both the free and compacted composition of all. - It's the birthday of John Sayles, (books by this author) born in Schenectady, New York (1950). He's one of the few writers who went on to become a successful filmmaker. His first novel was Pride of the Bimbos (1975), about five men who make a living playing exhibition baseball dressed as women. He got his first screenwriting job on a horror movie called Piranha. He said, My whole job was to contrive a reason why people, once they hear there are piranhas in the river, don't just stay out of the river but end up getting eaten. That's basically what they paid me $10,000 for. It's the birthday of Ed Sullivan, born in New York City (1902). He was writing a gossip column for the New York Daily News called Little Old New York, moonlighting now and then as a master of ceremonies at variety shows and benefits. He was emceeing a dance contest when somebody asked him if he'd like to try hosting a show on this new thing called television. The Ed Sullivan Show premiered live on CBS in 1948, and within a few years about 50 million people watched it every Sunday night. It was like vaudeville. It had opera singers, ventriloquists and magicians and pandas on roller skates and big stars. Ed Sullivan said, Open big, have a good comedy act, put in something for children, and keep the show clean. He was a shy, awkward man, but he loved performers. He personally chose every guest for his show. He was one of the first hosts to invite black performers, including Jackie Robinson, Duke Ellington, Richard Pryor, and James Brown. Ed Sullivan: the last television host who tried to appeal to everyone in America.

It's just that words change meaning with languages and geography. Especially in politics were the winner may try to degrade the views of the opponent. This baffles the rest of us, many of whom tend to accept, more or less, the definition of the Oxford Dictionary (original edition), which states: Of political opinions: Favourable to constitutional changes and legal or administrative reforms tending in the direction of freedom or democracy. Surely this is what all Americans want? Isn't it? So what's wrong with being liberal? It's almost impossible to answer your question without setting off the politics powderkeg. When used as a dirty word, liberal is an accusation that means one who advocates higher taxes and excessive government. That is what the person making the accusation wants the electorate to believe. I know how you feel. I have one of those and I like using it more than my FA 50/1.4. Mostly because I manually focus and it has such a nice feel and size of focus ring. The FA 50/1.4 has that small, smooth ring that many of the FA lenses have and just isn't as nice in that regard. But the A and FA versions do appear to be identical optically, though, right, Bruce? Re: Enabled with A50/1.4
First quick comparison, this lens doesn't feel much different than my M wrt focus feel. Of course, the K is noticeably sweeter . Interesting, Shel. Yes, now I remember the K 50/1.4 focus feel - g. I've actually had a number of the various Pentax 50/1.4's over time (including some sweet screwmount ones), but most of them have gone on to new homes (usually along with a body that they were attached to). I think I had only two K 50/1.4's - one went fixed on a lovely black KX and the other left on a nice black K2. I think I still have an SMC Takumar 50/1.4 on my (pre-ES) Electro-Spotmatic body. I'd say that the A 50/1.4 is easily the most used 50 that I still have - I don't have any older K-mount 50/1.4's around any more, and the A 50/1.2 that I also have sees use only for special circumstances (very low light). Oh, I still have one of those really nice A 50/2.8 Macro lenses, which I'll never get rid of. Actually, I do have a handful of M and A (mostly M, I'd say) 50/2's and 50/1.7's kicking around here, but they're sort of un-inventoried... Fred

Since I obtained the FA, I find myself using it a lot for both AF and MF. They are supposed to be optically identical, and the performance I see with them bears that out. I've considered getting an F or an FA 50/1.4, just for the DS that I now have. I do own mostly mf lenses, but I do have a small number of F and FA lenses, and I've been having some fun with this new-fangled autofocus concept - g. (Although I do have an SF1 and an SF1n - the SF1 is one of those clear plastic see-through demo models - g - and my wife and daughter-in-law both use ZX-5n's, I've actually done very little with af up to now. However, having my new DS is causing me to investigate ~two~ brand new technologies - both didjuhtel and ottofocus - g. However, I see that the supply of F and FA 50/1.4's has kind of dried up, and that the price (due to demand) has also been creeping up, so I might not ever end up with an af 50/1.4 after all... My inventory of F and FA lenses here consists of an F 70-210/4-5.6, a couple of F* 300/4.5's, an FA* 85/1.4 (it's actually my wife's, and I actually have the A* version for my 85), an FA* 80-200/2.8, and an FA 28-210/3.8-5.6. All of these (except for the last one) have been picked up for their optical qualities (af notwithstanding), and have mostly been used for manual focus. However, I've started playing with them on the DS, and - gasp! - I've even been trying them out as jen-you-wine ~autofocus~ lenses - g. Fred

Re: Enabled with A50/1.4
What, me personally? For a 75/1.4 to go on my 35mm? As much as I paid for the 77. Nothing, it's too short to be of use to me, and at that price. YMMV :-) I don't really see myself planning on using my A 50/1.4 as a dedicated portrait lens (at an effective 75/1.4) on my DS. 75mm is for me also a wee bit to wide for the kinds of portraits that I usually take. (However, this is not to say that I won't use the lens on the DS - it's just that I am not used to thinking of portraits (YMMV) at 75mm. Actually, because of the DS's crop factor, I now have a new set of portrait lenses - an A* 127.5/1.4, a K 202.5/2.5, a Tokina AT-X 90-180/2.8, etc. The crop factor is not really that big of a problem - it just requires a bit of a shift in thinking, but the same basic rules (for me) apply - a short portrait lens is for use in tight quarters, while a longer portrait lens is for use in a larger room or outdoors. I Need Suggestions For a Flash Unit (or two, or three...)
Hi, I think Pentax has just recently introduced a flash unit designed with the digital SLRs in mind. There were also a couple of existing Pentax models which were supposed to work pretty well with the *istDS. Then, I've found that Sigma makes a couple flash units which should work pretty well on the *istDS. Are there any others worth considering? I'm interested to know what flash unit people on this list have used on their *istDS cameras, and which ones they recommend. The Sigma units could save me some money, but I'm not sure what I might be giving up. I think the things that are most important to me are high power, and the ability to use multiple flash units with relative ease. I might even consider getting some studio monolights, if I could find some inexpensive ones worth buying. I guess what I really want is something in between the typical studio strobes and simple on-camera flash. I need something very portable, but with the ability to easily use multiple flash units. thanks, Glen
