Mike,
Nice capture & monochrome conversion! My only qualm is that it would
be nice if more detail could be pulled from the shadow areas.
I like your photoblog also by the way. Thanks for sharing.

This would be a case of slightly above normal activity of the list. If

K10D: Discovered Hot Pixel on my New Camera

2007-01-19 Thread John Taylor
Just wondering If other on the list think this is anything to worry
about overall. I discovered that my new (Nov 06) K10 has a hot (or
dead) pixel. I hadn't noticed in my initial images, but looking at
some recent low light pics it is clearly there as well as the earlier
overlooked shots.
I shoot exclusively in RAW so I know my software programs can take
care of this, but it really bugs the hell out of me that I shell out
some decent money for the new DSLR to find this out . But then again
maybe it fairly common and a single is not that much to worry about.
I know I wouldn't accept a $900 LCD monitor that had a defective
pixel right off the bat. Will Pentax provide a return for another
body? What would you do?

Thanks,
JayT

21 limited vs 16-45 f4

2007-01-19 Thread Brian Dunn

Would anyone who has both of these care to comment on whether the 21 limited
is better than the 16-45 at 21?

I have the 16-45 and am wondering if the 21 would be better for photographing
large groups of people. ( i.e. the mild distortion probably isn't an issue,
but resolution is important )

Yes, it happens.

I manually empty my spam filter frequently, so I can check to see if

If too much builds up it all goes into the bit bucket. :-)

Re: K10D: Discovered Hot Pixel on my New Camera

2007-01-19 Thread David Savage
There is no guarantee that a replacement body will not have 1 or more
hot/stuck pixels.

My *istD had 3 when I got it, & I didn't notice them until I did a
specific hot pixel test. I exclusively shoot RAW so it's never been an
issue.

Out of the 10 million plus photo sites on the K10D's CCD
(technologically, quite a bit different to an LCD), if only 1 is
faulty your in pretty good shape.

Well, when they sell the body so cheaply, they have to make profit elsewhere.

Also, consider that a DSLR body has a shorter lifespan than a film
body because technological improvements.

This is why I think the DA* lenses will be very expensive.

Re: Peso - My own HDR

2007-01-19 Thread Boris Liberman
I've a problem with this shot.

There is this white glow or whatever is the term just above the roofs of
the buildings. Then there is same white artifact around the tree
branches on the far left. Could be this is some kind of HDR effect. Yet,
it makes this photo look unnatural.

The composition is right and I generally like the scene, given the same
attitude we have towards snow in Israel ;-). But this HDR thingie - it
is still very weird to my eyes.

2007-01-19 Thread J and K Messervy
I've been playing with wireless flash. I'll try some long exposures
tomorrow night. I haven't had a problem with the 30 sec shutdown with the
battery that's been through a few charge cycles. Changing the iso with the
ok button and front dial is really great though.

Sweet, I can agree on that .-)

None of my three boys wanted pacifiers. They haven't been sucking their finger
either. Anything that wasn't food was spit out with contempt faster than we
could get it in .-)

It did make them difficult to calm down sometimes when they were small, but but
most of the time we were glad. Especially later when we saw others trying to
make their kids stop using them.

2007-01-19 Thread Scott Loveless
Christie asked me yesterday if I was going to tell you guys about
this. Since I spend more time reading the list than actually talking
to my real family I figured I would.

I quit my job. Christie is going to start working full-time and I'm
going to stay home with the girls. After crunching the numbers a bit,
we found that we'd be better off financially, plus I'll be home every
evening (first time in four years). So yeah, I'm gonna be a
stay-at-home-dad. I've read that "Mr. Mom" isn't received well by
most stay-at-home-dads, but I don't care if anyone calls me that.
I've been called worse and gotten over it rather quickly.

Brace yourselves. I'm sure there are lots and lots of photos of my
kids coming to the list very, very soon. And if you're anything like
me, there's nothing you like better than looking at photos of other
people's kids. :)

One defective pixel out of ten million?
I'd say you don't have a problem worth worrying about.
If you exchange the camera, most likely the replacement will have more dead
or stuck pixels.

What do you mean by "better"?

I've not done any direct comparisons ... I sold the 16-45 long before
the DA21 became available ... but I doubt the DA21 has any more
rectilinear distortion than the DA16-45 set to 21mm FL. Neither is
perfect, both are fine for most subjects, neither is really a lens
designed for architecture.

While I'm also very sure that the DA21 has an edge on resolution and
contrast, I'm also certain that the DA16-45 has more flexibility for
photographic large groups of people because it has focal length
flexibility ... both wider and narrower FoV choices can be made,
allowing you to fit the FoV to the group better if vantage points are
limited.

The DA21 is a better 'walk around' lens for me because it is much
smaller and lighter. I like the way it balances better and allows the
camera to remain more unobtrusive too, for candids and street
photography.

That's all tail. Beautiful night for observation. Not a cloud in the sky.

After loosing sight of the comet the tail was quite obvious. It was

The "wide-normal" field of view has traditionally been my favorite
focal length, the Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8 was the very first lens I
bought for the *ist DS, even before I received the body, so i suspect

Yes, it has been. About 250 km from here.

>From the top of my head it is about 700 tons of oil. That's not a lot, but
it has leaked near one of our important bird reservations. The weather has
been bad in the area. So the high tech ship that should take care of it was
not able to do the job.

At the moment nobody knows the consequences. All we know is that some birds
are hurt badly, but we have no idea how many. Looking at the pictures of the
area makes me sad.

I have good news too. We have about two inches of snow outside, and the
light is not bad. I'm at work now, and will be till the light is gone, but
guess what I'm doing tomorrow.
First I'm going to make some wide angle shots of my house, and then I'm
going to my Birdland. If I'm lucky I will be able to shoot some birds I
haven't shot yet. :-)

Congratulations! The photo is very nice, too.

My son has an Optio W20, and likes it a lot. Very
sharp, remarkably flare-resistant lens, build quality
just shy of a hockey puck. The LCD could be easier to
see in sunlight, though, and there is no viewfinder.

Overall, he's -very- happy with it.

Thanks, Boris and Bruce, for your comments!

Boris, I see what you mean. I gave this scene a
thorough "photo-massage", and the shots that included
the left leg of the structure had excessive distortion
in the building. I thought this was the best of the
lot.

If they'd just built the plaza about 10m bigger, I
could have had the perfect composition!

Re: 21 limited vs 16-45 f4

2007-01-19 Thread Bruce Dayton
As one who shoots weddings and portraits regularly, I have to caution
on too wide a shooting. Although the prime is probably better
corrected for linear distortion, you have to be cautious about
shooting too close with too wide a lens. The reason is that a
rectilinear lens distorts in a different fashion than a fisheye. All
the lines are straight, but the closer to the outside edges, the
objects get squished and fatter looking. The net result is that the
people on the outside edge will look short and fat (comparatively).
This can be really bad if they really are a little short or fat.

I think for the DSLR, around 24mm is about as wide as you would want
to shoot. Right now, there is no limited lens in that focal length.
Your choices are FA*24/2, A 24/2.8 or K24/2.8. From my experience and
what I have seen, I would lean towards the A or K 24/2.8.

Hope this helps. You can take your DA 16-45 (great lens, BTW) and do
a little test by shooting closer subjects around 20mm and observing
them in the center outside edges. You will see that they have been
squished to keep the lines straighter. That is the real problem
shooting bigger groups - they tend to fill the image and start to
exhibit that kind of distortion.

Interesting. Are you saying that a 28/30/31 fattens outsides edges on
a 35mm? I have sure seen it on 24.

Re: 21 limited vs 16-45 f4

2007-01-19 Thread Joseph Tainter
I can offer a roundabout comparison:

I have tested the FA 20 F2.8 against the DA 16-45 set to 20 mm. The test
was for sharpness, with the subject a mud-brick wall. The FA 20
definitely wins.

I have tested the FA 20 agains the DA 21. Same test for sharpness. They
are very, very close. I call it a draw.

Therefore I would be very confident that the DA 21 is sharper than the
DA 16-45 at 21 mm.

Re: PESO - Couple of recent ones

2007-01-19 Thread Bruce Dayton
I appreciate your candor, Boris. I guess I have to ask, how, most
other photographers also develop a more common motif, that no one
comments on getting used to them? Godfrey, Juan, Kenneth and others
all shoot mostly similar types of scenes - is it because nature is
more boring than people or what? I'm more curious here than defensive
- just trying to figure it out.

Thanks,

Bruce

The first one is extremely nice. Excellent!

Are you gonna try and get out of the city so you have a great natural
horizon and foreground for a shot like the 2nd?

Horn blowers anomalous would like to introduce it's new member:
sir Francis Pentaxshooter Proudfoot Mckenty!

I just received a call from the assistant editor of Pacific Yachting
magazine informing me that I had just won first place in their annual
photo contest. I completely lost it when I was on the phone and started
yelling "I Won! I Won! at my office mates (which the lady from Pacific
Yachting found rather amusing).
The photo ( http://www.islandlight.ca/showphoto.php?image_id=211 ) was,
in my opinion, the worst of the three that I entered, but hey, the prize
is a Optio W20 so I'm not going to
complain. Our decks don't always stay as dry as it is in that photo so
having a water proof camera will make for many more and better photo
opportunities. Sorry to bother you with my little bragging session but
I'm a little excited (this is the first photo contest I've won and also
the largest one I've ever entered).
Any one on the list have one of these things? Are they good?

By buy bye,
Francis

PS.
That photo was one of the first (meaning in the fist two hundred) shots
taken with my DS.
