What Godfrey said is a good suggestion, IMMHO.
The spray propellant will drive the new lube into the crevices and
pretty much flush the WD-40 out. Displace it. Replace it.

RE: technikdirekt.de?

2007-03-20 Thread Minelli Flavio
I'll jump in on this even if I still have to present myself to "the new
ones"... ;-)

I bought a lens from them a few years ago, whe they were just starting
to work outside of Germany. It was a bit annoyed to have all the detail
pages in german, but the service was good and the prices as good.

I still seem to find prices about 20% lower than mainstream italian ones
(no big surprise) and almost on par with those from the USA, sometimes
even lower.

I think they are a company you could trust.

Beware of the usual warranty problems, unless Pentax has outgrown them
while I was looking the other way...

Ciao, Flavio

Interesting K10D comment on T.O.P.

2007-03-20 Thread Mark Roberts
"the salesman was concerned when I asked to see the K10D and the D80
together, apparently fearing that the D80 would suffer in comparison.
He suggested that the D200 was a more appropriate comparison for the
K10D, and pulled one out and set it on the counter for me without being

At this point, I'd be soaking the leg lock in hot water and dish detergent,
and working the leg lock while submerged. After you have the spray lube
worked out of the thing, let it air dry and see how it works. If you think
it needs some lubricant, I'd recommend white grease in a very small amount
applied to the hing pin only, and let it work itself in through use.
And toss out the can of WD-40, it isn't good for anything in your climate.

I bought one of those a while back when I had the DS. It worked pretty
well. Now it doesn't work any more. It worked fine with the K10D one
day and the next day, it didn't. I can only presume it did its job and

Re: Today in the Studio

2007-03-20 Thread wendy beard
Yes, the USA sees them as seperate breeds but yet the Laekenois
doesn't have full AKC recognition. Because of them being lumped as
varieties in Canada you ~can~ breed a mal with a terv. (not that I
agree with that) Even is the US, it is not uncommon for breeders to
mix malinois and laekenois.
Because they are essentially the same breed it is not an unusual
ocurrence for a same variety pair to throw offspring of another
"type". For example 2 groenedaels could throw a couple of tervs in a
litter. In FCI countries the dogs would be registered as they fall
i.e. a longhaired brown would be registered as a tervuren even if it
had two groenendael (black) parents. In the US, the longhaired brown
out of two blacks would be registered as a groenendal with a
disqualifying fault for colour! Coat colour and length genetics are
pretty complicated.
One of my dogs is a mutant. Tanja is sable with a reverse mask. She's
the one on the left (in case you weren't sure :-) )
http://www.pbase.com/wendybeard/image/70809520
I only know of 2 others in the US and one in Canada with similar
colouration. One of the dogs in the US was actually a product of two
groenendaels (black longhair)

Now getting really OT:

If you are plugging in via a spade plug (they look like household wall
plugs), try flipping the plug around. The Pentax is polarized, and needs to
be plugged in the right way. Mine only works with the spade plugged in one
way, not the other.

Re: Interesting K10D comment on T.O.P.

2007-03-20 Thread Bruce Dayton
The salesman is not far off the mark. I place the K10D in
between the D200 and D80 for feature set and build - but price sure
causes problems when comparing against the Nikons. In order to sell
against the K10D, you really have to ignore the body and compare the
rest of the system. Then Nikon starts to look like a good buy. For
those just looking for a lens or two, you would be hard pressed to
pick either Nikon over the Pentax, if you are really comparing
features and price. I think few do that.

Will this be like Sigma, where you have to get a new chip (or with Metz

Anyway, I'm sure Metz will get P-TTL correct.

Re: Yet More Bags

2007-03-20 Thread Nick Wright
I sold it because it did not fit my style of shooting. I tend to like
to work with one body switching lenses when I need to. And I didn't
think it worked well with that style. Which is one reason I love my
f803 so much.

When I did the double barrel thing (ie- body over each shoulder one
with wide zoom and one with tele zoom) it was very nice. When I shoot
that way all I have to carry is extra cards and batteries so I'm not
getting into very often.

Here's what I wrote about it back when I first got it and was using it
to cover the biggest festival in the area (back then I loved it, and I
have a sneaking suspicion that when this year's festival rolls around
I might /really/ miss it):
http://f8andbethere.blogspot.com/2006/11/who-is-that-hunk-of-guy.html
http://f8andbethere.blogspot.com/2006/11/chestvest.html

Couple other things that came to be annoying to me about it were that
it does look like you're some kind of unabomber or something.
Especially combined with my standard choice of grey hooded jacket.

And two, those pockets do stick out a little making squeezing through
tight spaces awkward sometimes.

RE: Film Is Dead

2007-03-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff
I'm so tired of being environmentally and politically correct. I recycle,
use environmentally correct materials, conserve as much as I can, eat
organic foods, buy locally produced produce, support local small
businesses, and so on. Last week there was a small bag in my car (made
from recycled paper, printed with soy ink, and which contained no
trans-fat, baked not fried organic potato chips) that was destined for the
recycling center. A friend got in the car and made some comment about the
bag. I just got fed up with all this environmental crap, and tossed the
bag out the window and watched the breeze carry it into the bay. It felt
so good! Next week I'm planning to toss some aluminum cans out the window
into the roadway. Some homeless person will pick them up and recycle 'em,
getting a small amount of money for it and the other cans and bottles
s/he's accumulated. I will have then contributed to his economic well
being as well as getting the cans recycled. IMO, a much more sensible
solution than having to worry about what to do with the can.

Lens suggestions

2007-03-20 Thread Nick Wright
So I'm starting to think a little more seriously about putting
together the Pentax kit. I'm all about the available light so I'm
looking at large aperture primes and would like to ask y'all's
opinions about them.

Specifically I'm looking at the M28mm f/2, M50mm f/1.4, and either the
A85mm f/1.4 or the 85mm f/2. Pros, cons?

And in regards to the 85/1.4, how often do those come available for sale?

Thanks in advance!

Personally I find working with pre-A series lenses too much of a
change from working with more recent series lenses, and feel it
constrains the features of the K10D too much for my liking. It loses
all the exposure modes other than Manual, unless Av mode with wide
open aperture is what you tend to do all the time, etc. And the
K10D's semi-automatic metering mode for the pre-A lenses has some
known fallibilities ... nothing terribly serious, but it does take a
different methodology to get the best from it. There are times when
it proves just fine to do so, but these lenses would not be the basis
of my "essential" working lens kit.

- The M28/2 ... my favorite "use it all the time" focal length, I
wish they'd get on with it and produce a DA28/2 Limited. I had the
A28/2.8 first, sold it when I obtained the FA20-35/4 AL as it covered
the focal length better, and added the FA28/2.8 AL. I'd love a high
quality f/2 lens in this focal length that allowed me full access to
the K10D's features.

- My impression from having used both M and A (and later) series
50/1.4s is that the 50mm f/1.4 lenses were greatly improved
(particularly wide open) from the A-series onwards.

- I had the M85/2 and it was a fine lens (as long as you used a good
deep hood to prevent flare). I replaced it with the FA77 Limited,
which is better, and then replaced that with the DA70/2.4 Limited,
which suits me even better as the shorter focal length and smaller/
lighter form factor do more for me than the extra .6 stop in speed.

My current lens kit of "essential" lenses is all primes:
   DA14/2.8 ED, DA21/3.2 Limited, FA28/2.8 AL, FA43/1.9 Limited,
DA70/2.4 Limited

Adequately fast for anything I've needed for low light with ISO 800.
The right focal lengths for my use with the K10D, all excellent
performers, and all except the DA14 are light and compact. They allow
me to use all the features of the K10D as appropriate.

It is for the EOS 30d, 20d, 20da, rebel xt (350d), rebel (300d)

I find myself happy enough with the kit lens I have and the macro lens
weighs twice as much --

I don't seem to be using it - Id have probably been better off getting a

LOL ... love it. :-)

Using a cheap wide adapter like that gives all the bendy lines and
odd blur/CA/etc that I'd occasionally want for a fisheye view, and is
cheaper, smaller and lighter than a dedicated FE lens. Might be a
thought to add one of them to my kit for use with the DA21 if I feel
I want to play with those kinds of effects again. I sold the Zenitar-
K 16mm lens as it simply sat in the equipment drawer untouched the
vast majority of the time. Cheaper than a Lensbaby in Kmount too, and
I get to use all the exposure mode of the K10D... !

Thanks.

Re: Lens suggestions

2007-03-20 Thread P. J. Alling
My answers (others may vary)

1.) The m28 f2.0 doesn't have a sterling reputation, in fact most of the
older Pentax 28mm lenses don't have such good reps, except for the [K]
28mm f3.5. (I wouldn't know at that focal length I can put up with
f2.8, and besides I have the "rare" [K] 30mm. Yea, yea, yea, too much
information).

2.) For over all quality the A 85mm f1.4 is supposed to be the best. (I
couldn't justify the price myself). The M 85mm f2.0 is small, about the
same size as a 50mm normal, relatively fast, and moderately sharp, (very
sharp after f5.6), and not nearly as expensive used as any other Pentax
85). It gives a nice ~135mm AOV, (well 127mm actually), on an APS
digital and makes pleasing portraits on 35mm film.

3.) The 85 f1.4 became available often enough, every few weeks on e-bay,
when I was paying attention. Just be prepared to trade your first born
for one.

You don't mention which body, or if it's film or digital you'll be
using, just remember that the M lenses don't communicate with the body
and you'll need to use stop down metering on any Pentax digital, and it
won't work at all on a *ist Film camera, (I assume that with these
lenses in mind you're not going to be using one of the real bottom
feeding cameras).

Which is a bit of an odd statement as mine are usually in motion when
they are under command as well. I think they're saying if you don't

GESO - Weekend in Haifa

Hi!

This is the first gallery I compiled for a very long time. It is also
the first one I made with LR.

Enjoy if you can and let me know what you think.

Unusual composition, I rather like that. Good job mate. Needs WD40 on

like it a lot. I like the composition and the colors on the boats

similar lens for similar experiments? I'm going to be attending the
"Symposium on Lensless, Alternative and Adaptive Photographic

that wouldn't qualify as "lensless" photography it clearly falls under

Enablement: car

I finally got a car! It's a '95 Chevy Cavlier. Doesn't come close to
comparing to my old Mustang, but it's four wheels instead of the two human-

So, when's the next NorCal PDML gathering? ;)

I should've specified that these will be going on film bodies with
absolutely no thought whatsoever to using them on a digital.

I need to ask about bodies sometime soon too. I'd really like to get
an MX, but I don't know if I can live with only having the three LEDs
for an exposure meter. Is there something the size of an MX (that is
fully mechanical) that has a needle in the viewfinder meter?

Are you asking about a true match needle center weighted metering
system? I think the LX has some variation of that - not exactly the
same, but it does have a needle. It is a little bigger, but not lots.
Otherwise, I think you are looking at the K series - they are bigger
though.

RE: Lens suggestions

2007-03-20 Thread Bob W
I've owned most of those at some point. The one I haven't owned is the
M28/2 (didn't know there was one). I had the K28/2, which is a superb
lens and everybody should have one. There is nothing to fault about
this lens.

The M50/1.4 is a very good lens, sharp, easy to focus, perhaps a
slightly cold colour compared to the others.

The A85/1.4 is optically superb. It's lightweight but quite large and
perhaps a little bulky to handle. They are usually very expensive and
difficult to come by.

The M85/2 is popular with a lot of people. I never particularly liked
mine for 2 reasons. First, mine was slow to focus. I remember it
taking more than 360 degrees to go from near to infinity, but my
memory may be at fault. I also found it heavy to focus, perhaps it
needed regreasing or something. Otherwise it's very small and
convenient.

Re: Lens suggestions

2007-03-20 Thread Nick Wright
I was hoping there was something like an MX but with a K1000 meter in
it (at least the needle part).

Oh well. I think I'll probably just end up going with the MX as I
really think I'll like the size. Speaking of which, does anyone have
any photos with a K1000 and MX side-by-side? Thanks.

actually, there are five of them so it's not a problem anymore I reckon. ;-)

can't comment on the others, but I like M50/1.4 more than A50/1.4 (I
have 2 samples from both). If you are after sharpness wide open you
might prefer the A version, because it actually is sharper, but you are
going to pay for that with significantly worse (double line type) bokeh.
YMMV, but I prefer M50 over A50 any time.

Peter

Re: Lens suggestions

2007-03-20 Thread Scott Loveless
Hey, Nick. The MX has 5 LEDs on the right side of the viewfinder. I,
too, prefer a needle, but the LEDs work very well for low light and
when you might have a dark filter on the lens. The LEDs suck butt in
bright sun. In addition to the MX I also have a K1000. It's a bit
bigger than the MX, but with the meter needle I think it compliments
the MX nicely.

I also have an M85/2. Not a bad little lens at all. I posted this
photo well over a year ago to a mixed response. It's the only one I
have online right now that I can definitely say was taken with the
M85/2. Hand held, mid-afternoon, probably HP5+, but I'd have to dig
out the negs to be sure.

You mean a lens like the Pentax H? It's easy enough to gut a Holga,
they should be cheap. Saw off the helicoid and glue everything to a
body cap...

Also, you could try to find one of those fake SLR cameras with a
plastic lens and gut that. Although I'm not sure if the distance to
the filmplane will be workable in that case.

For truly lensless, you can easily make a pinhole with a body cap, a
drill, some aluminum foil and a needle.

Re: Lens suggestions

2007-03-20 Thread Nick Wright
Speaking of the 85mm f/2, I notice there's one on KEH.com right now
rated as UGLY condition but still selling for more than $100! I guess
y'all were right about paying an arm and leg for an Pentax 85.

I almost wonder if I can just forego the 85mm altogether. I love my
85mm on my EOS1D, but it's FOV on that camera is like a 100mm lens on
a 35mm camera. And back when I was shooting Pentax I had a 28/2.8, a
50/2 and a Sears 135/2.8. And I'll tell you what, that Sears lens was
one of the sharpest lenses I think I've ever owned. I think I paid $5
for it back when there was a KEH store in Dallas.

So maybe I will just forego an 85mm?
