RE: SDHC cards

2007-03-27 Thread Markus Maurer
Hi William
I use a "normal" 4GB SDHC sandisk card with the K10D and it is slower than
the 2GB sandisk ultra but works fine.
Greetings

I am wondering if anyone has used the 4 gb Sandisk ExtremeIII SDHC card in
their K10 (firmware 1.10)?
If so, what's it like?

Thanks

Since I am rarely asked to make prints straight from the camera and
since I consider the JPG files to be waste of space, I shoot only RAW
(DNG). If necessary, say if asked, I can very quickly produce JPGs in
camera by in-camera RAW processing.

I tend not to store JPGs in the LR library except the following two cases:
1. The large JPG files that were actually prepared for print *and* printed.
2. The small JPG files that were actually prepared for web. These I
use for publishing on the web of course and for creating collections
that I later turn to web galleries.

Hope you're at least partially found now ;-).

Cheers.

It was tricky trying to frame & expose so that there wasn't too much

As I type this, my son and daughter-in-law's Golden Retreiver is

Buy it in the UK - it will only be a high-end four figure sum.

Re: Outdoor Photographer magazine resorting to dirty tricks

2007-03-27 Thread Nick Wright
Last year Outdoor Photographer was advertising two free issues with
absolutely no obligation. After you got your two free issues, you
could decide whether you wanted to get a subscription or not.

Well, needless to say that before I even got my first free issue I
started getting letters in the mail demanding payment for my
"subscription." I emailed them and they assured me that I could wait
till after I got my two free issues.

But at some point (before getting the second issue) I started getting
"late notices." At which point I either called or emailed and (not so
politely) told them where they could put their late notices.

So, disappointingly, I think that OP has been about the guerilla
marketing for a bit now.

Thanks Markus. I'm pretty sure the SDHC ExtremeIII runs as fast as the
smaller cards of the same name, but I will be confirming that before I buy.
Right now I am using UltraII cards, which read/write half as fast as

Re: Raw or Raw+Jpeg? What to do with Jpeg files ?

2007-03-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I have my K10D set to produce RAW files only. Occasionally, I press
the RAW button if I know I'm going to need a JPEG immediately (and
take the time to set up a better white balance, etc). Otherwise, if I
need one, I process a RAW into a JPEG in-camera.

If you have both RAW and JPEG files with matching metadata in the
same directory, Lightroom will ignore the JPEG files when importing
and only import the RAW files. If you have the RAW files, there is no
need for the JPEG renderings.

If you want both in your library, segregate them into separate
directories and Lightroom will import both.

My expererience: K10D AF and handling with grip

2007-03-27 Thread Thibouille
This weekend I was at sea with a couple of my wife colleagues (is that
an English word?) and got the possibility to shot family-like shots as
well as a couple birds.

1/ When shooting family-like shots (very unimpressive btw, just for
fun) I was asked to let them see the shots of course and notice that
in this very situation, the shutter trigger from the grip is sometimes
in the way which cancels the reviewing of images. Annoying of course
but nothing really bad.
However, contrary to my D+grip, I never touched the trigger in
shooting situation.
Never had a suspicious low battery alert like with the D (normal, no NIMH here).

2/ When shooting birds with my DA 50-200 (I don't have AF 300mm or
anything like that, unfortunately) I quickly found out that the AF is
way more accurate and faster than with my D. Birds are moving
(really?) but this movement was enough to make the D very confused.
The K10D was perfect in any respect for this little exercise: fast and
precise AF and buffer/writing speed up to the task.

I think I wil be difficult to regret buying the K10D.

Question about point #2, if I may? Were you bird shooting in single or
continuous drive mode, and if so, "S" or "C"?

Re: My expererience: K10D AF and handling with grip

2007-03-27 Thread Thibouille
I shot in AF-C and continuous drive mode, fairly certain but I will
check for you.

I often use continuous drive mode because often people do move a bit
(like eyes etc) so if I take 3, there's a good probability one of the
three will be OK. But then you have to put quite a bit to trash and it
eats tour memory card.

I'm not good enough to most of the time to have good photos with people.

No real news. The first hearing was just to see if my daughter was
going to appear and to tell her not to leave the jurisdiction until
the case is settled. Our lawyer asked for a dismissal, but the judge
wants to hold the evidentiary hearing before ruling on that. It will
probably happen in a few weeks.

Was that the first $6,000? I assume not.
In this situation, having essentially the total legal gauntlet in front

optimism.

Until very recently, Sandisk only offered up to the Ultra II cards
(66x) in 4Gbyte SDHC compatible format, where the faster Extreme III
cards max'ed out at 2Gbyte. Now they are offering the Extreme III
cards in this format. I have not seen any reviews of the Extreme III
SDHC as yet, but I would expect that they meet the Extreme III
performance specifications, which rates them at up to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Read/Write (133x).

Sounds like you bonked that drive hard. Good, fast 120G laptop drives
for the PowerBook G4 systems are available for as little as $130 now,
however, so I'd just replace it after verifying that the enclosure
and hard drive adapter was in good condition.

(Hmm. I should do an upgrade too. The 80G drive in my PBG4 is nearly
full... the 120Gs now available are faster too.)

Hi Pentaxians

The Pentax A24mm works wonderfully on the K10D, it will be one of my most
used lenses.
Gladly the 52mm circular B+W pol filter does not vignette with it and I
fitted a vivtar wide metal 52mm hood with it.
I tested the Pentax M 200mm as well that day and sometimes had to press the
green button twice to not get overexposed photos in M mode,
I will soon show you some photos with these lenses.

One of the photos I took 3 days ago with the K10D and Pentax-F50mm was at
the botanical garden in Zurich:

Re: SDHC cards

2007-03-27 Thread Peter Fairweather
This whole SDHC issue confuses me. At the moment I use a Transcend 2Gb
150x card on my DS. Although the camera doesn't use all the speed, the
card reader does when downloading. I am now thinking of moving to SDHC
and 4gb for when I get the K10d or start shooting more RAW. This is
the choice in the UK from a reputable dealer

Transcend Secure Digital/SD Card
4GB Card (150x)

Up to 13.4MB/sec. write rate.
 Up to 18.7MB/sec. read rate.

OR

Transcend High Capacity Secure Digital/SD Card (SDHC)
4GB Card (Class 6)

 Speed class 6 (>= 6MB/sec writing),

They are about the same price but the SDHC one appears to be a lot slower.

Is SDHC an engineering breakthrough or a marketing breakthrough
whereby slower cards with much higher profit margins can be sold to
the gullible punter?

Spent some time today shooting a grebe familty.

At one point I heard loud splashing and dad showed up with this:

It was fed to the hungriest of the three kids,
that had quite a problem dealing with it :-)

May post some more of that series later ...

I think it lacks a bit of sharpness myself, this is a 50% crop
shot with the FA 400mm. Maybe I need to use the A* 300
for this stuff, it seems sharper ...

Re: Outdoor Photographer magazine resorting to dirty tricks

2007-03-27 Thread Gonz
I give variations on my name when I subscribe to magazines, and I ask
them to not sell my name to mailing lists. This does two things, it
lets me know if they are ignoring my request for privacy, and it gives
me peace of mind when I run into nasty ones like Outdoor Photographer.

Peter, class 6 means 6MB/s minimum.
There's no class faster than class6. An hypthetical card at 80MB/s
would still be labeled class6, as for current specifications.

It's a great action shot and I'm thinking you could probably have left
more of the frame, it seems a bit tight. It is soft overall and any
sharpening is going to cause bad noise in the background. Are you hand
holding these shots?

You seem to be able to get close to these birds (and they are very
pretty and photogenic) I'd suggest using a tripod to get better sharpness.

Thanks Bruce.

I have a Manfrotto 393 bracket on order (the poor mans wimberley :-)

Will try again later this week using that, and the A* 300mm f/2.8 + 1.7x
converter.
Sofar that combo has deliverd some truly sharp images for me ...

Battery life on K10D

2007-03-27 Thread Bruce Dayton
Saturday I did some little league shooting and thought I would report
my findings. I shot 1304 shots on one battery - all AF-C and very
little chimping. The battery is a Lenmar 1500mah and the camera meter
still says full - don't know how used it is, but did just fine for
this shoot. Never even got to my other two Pentax batteries.

Just FYI...

Hey, are you trying to grab my shopping cart? ;-)

Seriously ... I love working with the 645 but I still toss and turn
over whether to actually buy one. I've hardly looked at it in months.
The K10D, on the other hand, is happily collecting 300-400 photos per
week for me.

Good luck with it. And enjoy the couch. ;-)
