PHONE: 310-782-8619
COMMENTS: Dean is as sharp as some of my lenses. He has fixed a Super
Program, and he is working on one (two, cannibalizing one) of my lenses
now. As soon as my LX comes back from Colorado it is going straight to
Dean to have him check it out. He knows a little about Pentax because he
used to work for them. He has a lens collimator at his house which he uses
for his own lenses, so I think he knows a little about lenses.

He also checked out my Spotmatic II, but it was so close in tolerance it
didn't need any work. He's also good with slide-projectors, as he gave me
some tips on fixing mine.

Dean's done some work on some of my lenses. He's a good choice.

I bought mine through Amazon.com as they were the first to have a
confirmed unit to ship me, through 17th Street Photo. Good service
and a very good price when I got it at $906, complete.

I suspect it's like anything else:

Supply has caught up with demand so vendors can no longer charge a
premium or MSRP for it. Street pricing at normal discounting now
rolls into place.

A tip regards Lightroom: If you're going to put a large bunch of
photos together on an external drive and want it to be transportable
to other systems as well, put the library on the external drive too.
That way Lightroom will spend less time checking the status of the
file system at startup.

The Apple Xcode development tools package comes with the machine but
is not installed by default. It is encapsulated in a disk image on-
disk and on the DVDs that come with the machine. Xcode updates are
available by downloading from
   http://developer.apple.com

Helping bring the Apple Xcode tools package to developers was my
principle responsibility at Apple from the period 1999 to 2004. It is
the comprehensive, professional development system for Mac OS X, used
by both the majority of third party software vendors and Apple itself.

It is partially the complexity and partially that Microsoft has not
released the full NTFS specification for third parties to use.

Like the 'perfect formation' shot some are a bit soft,

For some reason, the (manually set!) focal-length

Not sure how that happened, apart from me not checking

No good match for this setup, the slower shots may

The good news, the 1/800 shot (at 500mm) seems to

Re: GESO - Three from the river

I think the Periwinkle background is a bit busy. But both bridge shots are
very, very nice. Good color and details in the rocks and water. Really well
done.

Marnie aka Doe :-)
===

Here's three frames of Velvia I shot with the 67
recently.

The first two are of a covered bridge that spans the
Yuba River just east of here. It was originally built
during the Civil War and is one of the longest covered
bridges in existence. It has been rebuilt a number of
times and is no longer open to anything but foot
traffic.

http://www.primelensphoto.com/bridge1.jpg

and landscape:

http://www.primelensphoto.com/bridge2.jpg

Pentax 67II, 55mm, f22, 3 seconds. I had to use both a
ND .9 grad filter AND a polarizer to slow it down that
much. Luckily the sky was smiling on us that morning.
Not a lot of post processing. Just a first pass at
both of these.

Also shot a couple frames of Periwinkles. They are
growing everywhere right now. There was a large
covering of them near the riverbank. This one was the
best:

http://www.primelensphoto.com/periwinkle.jpg

Again with 67II and 55mm. Don't recall what stop or
speed but most likely f4 due to the shallow DOF.

For anyone who's interested (since I'm about to talk
about film processing), I have all of my E-6 now done
through A&I in LA. My local lab used to do 3 hr.
turnaround but, of course, can't afford to anymore
with the falloff in film shooters. A&I does a really
nice job, though. I use prepaid mailers I get through
B&H. They've gone to a smaller box to hold the
processed roll which is too small for 220, IMHO. So
this roll was wound a bit too tightly when it arrived
today. Whatca gonna do?

I am wondering a bit why it keeps coming down. I think it may be due to that

Subject: Problem with A* 200 macro

I had some exposure problems while shooting with the A* 200 macro last
week. Looking at it closely I discovered today that it is not stopping
down properly when the lens is set to the "A" position. basically, it
does not stop down at all at f 4.5 and 5.6, but then begins to stop down

at f 6.7. The aperture blades seem to be about 1 stop off across the
board, and the smallest aperture I can get looks to be f22, not f 32.
When I set the aperture via the aperture ring, it stops down correctly.

This performance is consistent on the three bodies I have that use both
Aperture Ring and Body control of the aperture setting - the Pz-1p,
*ist-D, and K10D. On other cameras - Mz-S and LX for example, this
issue is moot since the aperture ring is used.

I tested a couple other "A" lenses and they don't have this problem, so
something is amiss with the 200.

Last summer the lens (and my *ist-D) took a nasty six foot fall off a
tripod. The grass was thick and the ground was soft, so aside from
having to clean some mud off the filter on the front of the lens, I
thought no harm was done. Now I wonder if the lever that controls the
aperture setting on the camera was knocked out of alignment.

Checking Pentax's website I see that "most" SMCP-A lenses are no longer
serviced. For folks familiar with the lens mechanism - any thoughts
about how repairable a problem like this might be?

I looks like I can work around the problem by setting exposure comp to
-1 stop and the aperture one stop smaller than I really want. but then I

can't stop down beyond f22 (not that I want but someday I might) and,
well, I just want it to work properly...

Any advice would be appreciated...

Re: Problem with A* 200 macro

2007-04-08 Thread Mark Cassino
Oh - I forgot to comment that as far as metering goes, the camera seems
to anticipate the correct aperture.

To explain - I set the *ist-D with this lens pointind directly into a
light table (to get a consistent metering.) If I set the lens to the
"A" position, and the body to aperture priority, it would result in the
same shutter speed as when I set the body to manual, set the aperture
with the aperture ring, and use the green button to meter. For example -
in both situations the camera reported the exposure to be 1/45th at f16.

BUT - the shot taken with the camera in aperture priority mode, lens in
"A" position, was one stop over exposed. If I set the camera, in Av
mode, to f22, -1 stop exposure compensation - I get a correct exposure.
So somehow the lens is correctly communicating the maximum aperture to
the body, but the body is not correctly stopping it down.

ACR 2.4 which I use certainly can't handle K10D PEF, I haven't
bothered with V3 as I don't have CS2

If you see a difference it's likely a difference in the calibration of
the RAW interpreter I suspect, the same goes for the handling of a
camera produced DNG and a PEF converted to DNG opened with ACR 2.4,
the colour temperatures are all over the place, it stuffed my custom
ACR calibrations.

No; nor when I worked there either.

It's a very sensitive issue with the USPS brass, and it's a very anal,
uptight work environment. Mentioning "going postal" would get you a
reprimand.

I worked the computer help desk, where everything ran on WindozeNT. You
weren't allowed to call the BSOD by that name, which BTW even M$ uses,
because it had the word "death". You had to call it a "windows blue screen"

Some of us had the jackets made up as a joke, but you couldn't wear it
anywhere near work. Probably would have gotten fired if the brass had
known about them.

In the end it didn't matter, because we all got laid-off and the jobs
were outsourced offshore.

Re: PESO - Harriman Reservoir

2007-04-08 Thread Russell Kerstetter
I did used Picasa for the most part on my PC (remember the part about
being frustrated with the GIMP :), and it did a pretty good job. I
actually liked it better than iPhoto. I cannot speak to the technical
aspects of conversion and adjustments, etc, but as far as the
useablitly, I think that it is a little more flexible than iPhoto in
what you can and cannot do. Although, I believe it is the newest
version of iPhoto that has the thouch up tool, which is kind of handy.
I also like the non-destructive aspect of LR, Picasa and iPhoto,
makes me less scared I am going to destroy something.

2007-04-08 Thread Brendan MacRae
I was at my Dad's the other day setting up his stereo
and he had a two-disc greatest hits type collection of
the Beach Boys. I've always been a huge Brian Wilson
fan so I used that disc to dial in the speakers while
futzing around with the cabling and whatnot.

Good lord were their harmonies outstanding! It's
amazing to hear their early stuff on CD. I sat there
just blown away listening to "In My Room," "Surfer
Girl," "When I grow up (to be a man)," just amazing.
There were a couple acapella tunes on that Disc, too,
as well as a radio promo for Murray the K that was
sung in typical Beach Boys fashion. God, I'd give
anything to be able to sing like that.

Genius.

If she's got a DVD-worth of negs, for what it will cost her it's
probably more sensible to buy an older scanner with the 110 holder and

I hate those types of dreams.

They generally put me in a foul mood for the first half of the day.

RE: PEF vs DNG

2007-04-08 Thread J. C. O'Connell
Not applicable,
What the camera does generate the RAW data is not relevant to .pef RAW
vs .dng RAW because they both should be holding
the EXACT SAME RAW DATA generated from the same camera, and hence there
should
be no differnce when a pef or a dng file data is run thru a RAW
convertor
which is what this thread was discussing...

Yes your right.

But there is supposition from some, that a certain amount of in camera
processing takes place to the RAW data. So it's possibly not true RAW
data.

Re: GESO First of many

2007-04-08 Thread drew
Thanks for you comments all, much appreciated.

Dave, the flower was shot with an old CZJ zoom lens which as always been
pretty sharp when stopped down a bit. I also added a bit of unsharp and
tweaked the colours a bit with gimp.

The bee was so nearly a good shot... as I was using the manual focus
zoom I was surprised I got her at all. Then my dog came along and tried
to eat her, so that was the end of that.

Cheers,
Andy.
