PESO - Dusk

2007-04-12 Thread Alastair Robertson
Hi

http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/image/77040452

another from the same beach as Dog's on Holiday. Dusk was falling
fast but we lingered long enough for me to catch this moment - sea
spray, big waves, black sand, and this pair on their way home.

Rendered in B W using lightroom - maybe a Tad dark, but this is how
it looked to me - getting pretty dark. Love the SR on the 10D - 1/8s
at 90mm!

Comments welcome

Alastair

P.S. I know people don't usually have time to look at galleries but if
you like, you can see more from the series at

I wonder if you like/dislike this artificial kind of look here.

I was simply amazed that they thought they could lower the hydraulic tray
with part of the piano still over the floor of the moving van.

If they had manoeuvred the piano to be facing even say 45 degrees from the
position they used it would have been practical as the trolley would have
still remained on the tray and the piano would have cleared the floor.

If I had been there when the second pic was taken I would have just walked
away - did he think that he could push that trolley under the piano?? OR -
maybe the guy balancing the piano walked over to the tray controls to
re-lift the tray to correct the initial c*ck-up?

Just so sad to see 'Specialists' getting it so stupidly wrong.

 Rod

Indeed. There's just been a series on UK TV about specialist moving. Things
like buildings and even the locos that George Sinos documented here. Ever seen
a runaway building? We'll just hold it with these 'dozers. Oh, the 'dozers
are moving now. How about a loco that might get swallowed up because the
movers can't be bothered to look for the fuel storage tanks that might still be
there? Put these metal plates down to spread (the now increased) weight.
Power cables in the way of the railway station building you are carting across
town? Just get a guy to sit on the (metal) roof and pole them over. No need
to switch off. Tastes just like chicken.

I can't believe they had any insurance. They certainly had spurs.

From the tone of the article the owners were hard pressed for money, so
the movers were probably the cheapest around. Then again they may not have
been. We don't know all the details. Also the owners shouldn't have been
stupid only insured it for the price they paid.

This company is based in Chiswick, where I used to live, and I hired them
to move a slightly less expensive piano a few years ago. No problem at
all.

The interesting thing is whether this will damage their reputation, or
bring them more business. The publicity (BBC, national newspapaers, etc)
was pretty cheap at only 25,000 pounds. They'll probably do pretty well
out of it, on a lightning doesn't strike twice basis.

Manual focus solution for istD series, Split image RF screen

2007-04-12 Thread J. C. O'Connell
FYI,

Just got this split image RF screen
for my istDS ( should work in any
of the istD series cameras ) :

http://preview.tinyurl.com/yu25dy

works fine, nice clear split image
and a large microprism surround.
I dont think you can get this from
Pentax (yet?). Works easily to F4
on any lens I tried and still very usable
to F5.6 on some lenses. Focus seems
as accurate as the original screen based
on my tests.

Recommended, and it's cheap for
the vast improvement it makes IMHO. (P.S.
dont forget to specify what camera
you need it for when you pay, he
makes them for a whole bunch of
different model DSLRS.)

The mysterious ways of marketing

I just received a marketing mail.

It's a about a book, the title translates to something like Practical
digital photography. I know it is a good book because I already have the
first edition. A few months after I bought it, a new revised much improved
edition came. Smart as I am I skipped that, and I was right. Now it is
improved even more in a third edition.

Ok. That's the background. The smart marketing people are selling the book
v3.0 with the words This book does not expire. It goes on, because this
book is about basic photography and not about the latest fashion of
equipment.
Yeah, right. I'll have one of those, not ;-)

I like it a lot as a composition.

The tonal balance is a little off, however: the brightness of the
rocks in the background overwhelms the feeling of a screen, and some
of the middle tones on the trees seem to run together. (At least on
my laptop screen... I'll look at it again when I get home on the

Editing it is a delicate proposition ...

Re: From a Recent Press Release...

2007-04-12 Thread P. J. Alling
Then again Sparx group seems to have a vested interest in Pentax getting
out of the Photography business, in fact any business. They wanted that
before Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market and like any group of
analysts they hate to be wrong. Sometimes so much so that they ignore
results. You should keep in mind that Sparkx Group has no vested
interest in the actual survival of any company, (except maybe for
themselves), to them its only money, and maximizing return is all they
care about. Better for Pentax to be bought by Hoya and dismembered,
from their point of view, (which will net them relatively high profits
on the sale of their holdings), than continue to survive and pay
dividends with only a normal appreciation in value over time.

I'm not saying the sky is falling. But I also would not be surprised if the
recent posturing is not just a way to further up the ante/purchase-price of
Pentax. If that threshold is met, Hoya could acquire the most profitable
part of the business, while possibly selling off or eliminating the
underperforming 2% profit camera-side of the business.

Remember, during most acquisitions, mergers, shutdowns, the modus operandi
is business as usual until the day an announcement is made. We've seen that
in operation already with the way the Samsung partnering was announced, the
way the merger was announced, and now the suddenness with the backing away
 from the deal.

 Time will tell.

The real lyrics to Louie Louie, (or so I've been lead to believe).

Louie, Louie,
me gotta go.
Louie, Louie,
me gotta go.

A fine little girl, she wait for me;
me catch a ship across the sea.
I sailed the ship all alone;
I never think I'll make it home

Three nights and days we sailed the sea;
me think of girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there;
I smell the rose in her hair.

Me see Jamaica moon above;
It won't be long me see me love.
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again.

Seems like a fairly clean love song.

It has little to do with Pentax's past history as a leader in the 50's and

I just used shadow/highlights on it to bring out the shadow details, which

I'd want to pull the highs down a little bit while separating and
expanding the tonal contrasts in the trees, bringing them up a notch
too. To me, this says a combination of curves adjustment layers and
masking is necessary ... I don't think any global editing tool will
do the job precisely enough. You wouldn't want to lose the delicate
roses and pinks, etc.

Given the complexity of the composition, rendering it out to exploit
everything you can get from it will take a bit of effort. And yes, I
also think it would look best LARGE. :-)

Re: Pentax Gallery: Uploading problems...?

I had them analyze one of mine that got rejected that way. What they
told me was there was some exif data. If there is any exif data, then
they scan for pentax cameras in it. If they don't find it, they
reject. So what you really want to do with the scanned images is to
strip all exif data from it before submitting. I do that with the
Save for Web Adobe function in Elements or photoshop.

Hope this helps.

The beta was occasionally challenging in the Print module with regard
to setup and sizing. However, all of that seems to have been fully
sorted out ... I use it exclusively for my printing now and am
extremely happy with it.

I find it best in Lightroom, just as in Photoshop, to use a profiled
print workflow rather than letting the print driver sort out the
color management on its own. Lightroom makes it much easier to set up
a particular print format and apply it to as many photos as I want,
reuse it whenever I want, compared to Photoshop.

There are many subtle differences in features and UI between the last

Why would it make it suspect? They are the majority shareholder. Almost
all (if not all) shareholders are in it for primarily one thing - making
money.

If making the most amount of profit in the shortest amount of time is
Sparx's goal, it's also the goal of many other shareholders.

I'm not stating anything regarding the possible demise of Pentax other than
what is publicly available. I do think their prediction of It will be hard
for Pentax to survive on its own in five to 10 years' time is a truthful
statement. If it were not, Pentax would have had no interest in a merger
with Hoya and Hoya would not have made indications that they would consider
divesting themselves of the low-margin divisions of Pentax, post-merger.

The point is success to Sparx is not necessarily, in fact probably
isn't, success to Pentax. In fact in Sparx is better off if Pentax is
sold. That makes Sparx's predictions of Pentax's demise suspect. I'm
not saying that those predictions are wrong, but I'm considering the
source.

Then again Sparx group seems to have a vested interest in Pentax
getting
out of the Photography business, in fact any business. They wanted
that
before Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market and like any group of
analysts they hate to be wrong.

Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market though, has been relatively
small. Small overall market share, small profit margin, even though they
are
turning a profit. It makes it very hard to compete.

Yes I know that Sparx and many other investors may have no vested
interest
in the survival of the company. That's exactly why some of us have been
saying for several years that we were worried with regard to survival of
the
brand. That, and we thought Pentax was making stupid moves in the
business
(which may have been the only moves they could make, based on cash flow
and
  profitability).

It has little to do with Pentax's past history as a leader in the 50's
and
60's, the quality of their lenses, or whether we personally like the
Pentax
  brand.

I'm not saying the sky is falling. But I also would not be surprised

  the

recent posturing is not just a way to further up the
ante/purchase-price

Pentax. If that threshold is met, Hoya could acquire the most

underperforming 2% profit camera-side of the business.

Remember, during most acquisitions, mergers, shutdowns, the modus

A bag for Laptop and K10D + 3 lenses and Flash and Pentax HOOD

2007-04-12 Thread Amirkambiz Hamedanizadeh
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise.
I am new to D/SLR camera world (just 4 months) and hope that I could
increase my knowledge in photography.
I am working as disaster relief doctor and taking pictures would be a good
hobby after hard days in field.

I have two questions:
1. I want to buy a bag pack, which can hold my K10D, + 3 lenses including,
Pentax 70-300mm, an external flash, tripod and laptop.
Which bag pack do you suggest?

2. I want to buy 2 Pentax hoods for FA-J 70-300mm and 28-80mm. But I can not
find any place online including BH. do you have any idea where I can buy
it?

Cheers,
Amirkambiz

P.S: Dear Godfrey,
I have Pentax FA-J 70-300mm, I am happy about it. I like its zoom, but to
talk about the quality of picture I can not tell any thing.

Indeed. I was very sorry to hear that. I love his books. Even his less
well-known ones are full of gems. Galapagos was about an event which
killed all humans except for a small group of people who happened to
be on a tourist trip to the Galapagos. It traces their descendants
over a period of 2 million years as they evolve into seal-like
creatures whose only remaining resemblance to humans is that they
laugh whenever one of the others farts.

Pentax 70-300mm, an external flash, tripod and laptop.
Which bag pack do you suggest?

If you are thinking a backpack style bag, the Lowepro CompuTrekker AW
will handle all of that very easily. I have one of these that I don't
use enough which I'm looking to sell. Lowepro makes a couple of
models of the CompuTrekker ... excellent bags.

For a shoulder bag to do this job, I've been using a Timbuk2 Commute
XL. I'm not sure if it's still in production in the XL size, but
unless you are using a 17 laptop, the standard Commute model will
probably do the job as well.

 2. I want to buy 2 Pentax hoods for FA-J 70-300mm and 28-80mm. But
 I can not
find any place online including BH. do you have any idea where I
 can buy
 it?

The Pentax USA online store (start at http://www.pentaximaging.com)
lists the following for the FA-J 28-80:

58mm Lens Hood PH-RBE (FA J 28-80)
$26.00 USD

I don't see a listing for the FA-J 70-300, you might want to call
their customer service number and find out if they have it available.

However, these hoods are for use with 35mm SLR cameras ... you can
use longer hoods for the DSLRs without vignetting.

Then again Sparx group seems to have a vested interest in Pentax
 getting
out of the Photography business, in fact any business. They wanted
 that
before Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market and like any group of
analysts they hate to be wrong.

60's, the quality of their lenses, or whether we personally like the

I'm not saying the sky is falling. But I also would not be surprised
 if

   the

recent posturing is not just a way to further up the
 ante/purchase-price

Pentax. If that threshold is met, Hoya could acquire the most

   profitable

part of the business, while possibly selling off or eliminating the
underperforming 2% profit camera-side of the business.

Remember, during most acquisitions, mergers, shutdowns, the modus

 seen

An excerpt from another report yesterday. It would appear to indicate that
Pentax et al. may not be opposed to a merger, they just changed their mind
regarding the conditions of the formerly proposed merger.

---

Watanuki, who was formerly a corporate vice president, also left the door
open to a future tie-up in a broader sense, which could involve steps
including a tender offer by Hoya or a joint venture.

I've never expressed opposition to a merger, he said.

Although Watanuki declined to comment on specific details of how he had come
into his new post, he said the former management was not open and had
caused
in-house confusion. The comment suggested that former president Fumio Urano
was
too forceful in pushing for the Hoya deal, prompting a split within the
company.

Re: Q: Pentax FA-J 75-300 ? Sigma 135-400 ?

2007-04-12 Thread Igor Roshchin

Godfrey,

Unfortunately, I don't have experience with either.

I've been using Tamron 70-300 4-5.6 LD/Macro that I bought
back in 1998. It is a reasonable lens. I found that the quality
of the photos is comparable to what I am getting with SMCP-F-70-210
in the same range of focal lengths.
It is noticeably soft in the range ~250-300, especially wide open.
(That's the reason I've been considering Sigma 100-300/4 or
something similar).
I've done quite a few good shots with this lens. It is definitely
a good buy for its price.
When I was choosing, I believe there was a consensus that Tamron
was better then the rival Sigma lens, and even then Pentax
(100-300, and probably 80-320 if it was around at that point).

I am not sure about the current version of Tamron (Di) lens,
but the price range is comparable to that of Pentax 70-300.

HTH,

Igor

RE: Manual focus solution for istD series, Split image RF screen

2007-04-12 Thread J. C. O'Connell
I didnt do any controlled testing if this screen has
any measurable change effect on metering, but so
far with program mode using A lenses, screw lenses
in AV mode, and PK/M lenses using stop down GB
method I am not noticing any differences visibly.
I use the centerweighted metering mode ususally.
I guess I could put the old screen back in
to do some controlled tests, but I like this
one so much better that there is no way
I am going back to the old screen even
if there is a slight difference so I dont
even want to bother fooling around with
the old screen anymore. The split image really helps on this camera
(istDS) for MF lenses and thats all I use...

I think that's definitely a stronger photo. The square crop suits it
well, the larger size and tonal edits make it more than the prior
rendering. Good job!

I agree with the one I filed down from an old Minolta. With the
kit lens (f/5.6) though, I found I have to be careful with eye placement
to keep the split prism from blacking out. Also, I'm surprised you say
that the GB hack works OK. I've found that with center-weighted (and
especially spot), any more than f/8 and it blacks out and overexposes.
Certainly not consistent.

Bottom line, with S/K/M lenses (almost all of what I use too),
many shots require a couple test fires with the check of the histogram to
get it right.

Sigma 50-500 has a big following, but it's pricier than he can
afford. The FAJ seems very inexpensive ... is it any good?

 thanks for any comments.

 Godfrey

Hi Godfrey

I've had the Sigma 135-400 APO, while not in the same league as the 50-500 it
really is quite a good lens. My main gripe with the lens was the amount of
extension and weight transferral when zoomed, it's at least as good as the 70-
300 APO Sigma, which I also had for some time. I believe the 50-500 does not
change length when zoomed, it's definitely a different class of lens.

I sold the 135-400 when I bought the 70-200/2.8 APO, which I use in
conjunction with a 300/4 APO prime and two EX converters. Effectively the 70-
200 + 2x EX covers the 135-400 range I had previously with very acceptable
results.

Hope this helps.

John

I just received a marketing mail.

It's a about a book, the title translates to something like
Practical
digital photography. I know it is a good book because I
 already have the
first edition. A few months after I bought it, a new revised
 much improved
edition came. Smart as I am I skipped that, and I was right.
 Now it is
improved even more in a third edition.

Ok. That's the background. The smart marketing people are
 selling the book
v3.0 with the words This book does not expire. It goes on,
 because this
book is about basic photography and not about the latest fashion of
 equipment.
Yeah, right. I'll have one of those, not ;-)
