PESO - Dusk
Hi http://www.pbase.com/kiwibiologist/image/77040452 another from the same beach as Dog's on Holiday. Dusk was falling fast but we lingered long enough for me to catch this moment - sea spray, big waves, black sand, and this pair on their way home. Rendered in B W using lightroom - maybe a Tad dark, but this is how it looked to me - getting pretty dark. Love the SR on the 10D - 1/8s at 90mm! Comments welcome Alastair P.S. If they had manoeuvred the piano to be facing even say 45 degrees from the position they used it would have been practical as the trolley would have still remained on the tray and the piano would have cleared the floor. If I had been there when the second pic was taken I would have just walked away - did he think that he could push that trolley under the piano?? OR - maybe the guy balancing the piano walked over to the tray controls to re-lift the tray to correct the initial c*ck-up? Just so sad to see 'Specialists' getting it so stupidly wrong. Rod Indeed. There's just been a series on UK TV about specialist moving. Things like buildings and even the locos that George Sinos documented here. Ever seen a runaway building? We'll just hold it with these 'dozers. Oh, the 'dozers are moving now. How about a loco that might get swallowed up because the movers can't be bothered to look for the fuel storage tanks that might still be there? Put these metal plates down to spread (the now increased) weight. Power cables in the way of the railway station building you are carting across town? This company is based in Chiswick, where I used to live, and I hired them to move a slightly less expensive piano a few years ago. No problem at all. The interesting thing is whether this will damage their reputation, or bring them more business. The publicity (BBC, national newspapaers, etc) was pretty cheap at only 25,000 pounds. Then again Sparx group seems to have a vested interest in Pentax getting out of the Photography business, in fact any business. They wanted that before Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market and like any group of analysts they hate to be wrong. Sometimes so much so that they ignore results. You should keep in mind that Sparkx Group has no vested interest in the actual survival of any company, (except maybe for themselves), to them its only money, and maximizing return is all they care about. Better for Pentax to be bought by Hoya and dismembered, from their point of view, (which will net them relatively high profits on the sale of their holdings), than continue to survive and pay dividends with only a normal appreciation in value over time. Re: Waaay OT: International Louie Louie Day
The real lyrics to Louie Louie, (or so I've been lead to believe). Louie, Louie, me gotta go. Louie, Louie, me gotta go. A fine little girl, she wait for me; me catch a ship across the sea. I sailed the ship all alone; I never think I'll make it home Three nights and days we sailed the sea; me think of girl constantly. On the ship, I dream she there; I smell the rose in her hair. Me see Jamaica moon above; It won't be long me see me love. Me take her in my arms and then I tell her I never leave again. Seems like a fairly clean love song. frank theriault wrote: On 4/11/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Not at all germane to the list, but something tells me a few of you will get a kick out of this nonetheless. I wasn't willing to chase driver problems, etc, so just deleted it and never looked backwards. Now, with the positive reports I am reading everywhere, I am wondering if maybe I should get it while the 199.00 price is there. A very close friend who is an incredible landscape photographer and shoots a LOT of stuff on a daily basis has just posted on his website a rave review of how he works with it and how much it has improved his workflow. Now, that doesn't fit my work habit, as I tend to shoot sporadically and ony dozens of shots at a time, but I still could use the database management tools it has to offer. I had them analyze one of mine that got rejected that way. What they told me was there was some exif data. If there is any exif data, then they scan for pentax cameras in it. If they don't find it, they reject. So what you really want to do with the scanned images is to strip all exif data from it before submitting. I do that with the Save for Web Adobe function in Elements or photoshop. I use it exclusively for my printing now and am extremely happy with it. I find it best in Lightroom, just as in Photoshop, to use a profiled print workflow rather than letting the print driver sort out the color management on its own. Lightroom makes it much easier to set up a particular print format and apply it to as many photos as I want, reuse it whenever I want, compared to Photoshop. There are many subtle differences in features and UI between the last public beta and the release 1.0 version. I would recommend downloading the free trial and going through Michael Tapes' tutorial videos to refresh your memory and understand the basics. They're available at http://www.rawworkflow.com/ I believe the tutorials are free of charge, although a request is made for a purchase to offset his costs in producing and providing them. Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market though, has been relatively small. Small overall market share, small profit margin, even though they are turning a profit. It makes it very hard to compete. Yes I know that Sparx and many other investors may have no vested interest in the survival of the company. Which bag pack do you suggest? If you are thinking a backpack style bag, the Lowepro CompuTrekker AW will handle all of that very easily. I have one of these that I don't use enough which I'm looking to sell. Lowepro makes a couple of models of the CompuTrekker ... excellent bags. For a shoulder bag to do this job, I've been using a Timbuk2 Commute XL. I'm not sure if it's still in production in the XL size, but unless you are using a 17 laptop, the standard Commute model will probably do the job as well. 2. I want to buy 2 Pentax hoods for FA-J 70-300mm and 28-80mm. But I can not find any place online including BH. do you have any idea where I can buy it? The Pentax USA online store (start at http://www.pentaximaging.com) lists the following for the FA-J 28-80: 58mm Lens Hood PH-RBE (FA J 28-80) $26.00 USD I don't see a listing for the FA-J 70-300, you might want to call their customer service number and find out if they have it available. However, these hoods are for use with 35mm SLR cameras ... you can use longer hoods for the DSLRs without vignetting. Re: From a Recent Press Release...
An excerpt from another report yesterday. It would appear to indicate that Pentax et al. may not be opposed to a merger, they just changed their mind regarding the conditions of the formerly proposed merger. --- Watanuki, who was formerly a corporate vice president, also left the door open to a future tie-up in a broader sense, which could involve steps including a tender offer by Hoya or a joint venture. I've never expressed opposition to a merger, he said. Although Watanuki declined to comment on specific details of how he had come into his new post, he said the former management was not open and had caused in-house confusion. The comment suggested that former president Fumio Urano was too forceful in pushing for the Hoya deal, prompting a split within the company. Tom C. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 13:21:00 -0400 Then again Sparx group seems to have a vested interest in Pentax getting out of the Photography business, in fact any business. Pentax's recent success in the DSLR market though, has been relatively small. Small overall market share, small profit margin, even though they are turning a profit. It makes it very hard to compete. Yes I know that Sparx and many other investors may have no vested interest in the survival of the company. That's exactly why some of us have been saying for several years that we were worried with regard to survival of the brand. That, and we thought Pentax was making stupid moves in the business (which may have been the only moves they could make, based on cash flow and profitability). It has little to do with Pentax's past history as a leader in the 50's and 60's, the quality of their lenses, or whether we personally like the Pentax brand. Tom C. Tom C wrote: The No. 1 shareholder, with a stake of 23.9%, is independent asset management firm Sparx Group Co. (8739). But I also would not be surprised if the recent posturing is not just a way to further up the ante/purchase-price

Re: PESO: Kids playing Soccer
Hello Jens, Kids and sports - tricky to shoot well. I like the 'pose' you captured of them. What I struggle with is feeling like they are in a game, rather than a practice. What contributes to that is the great DOF allowing me to very clearly make out other fields and goals. I would still like to see some blurring of the background to help me concentrate on the players. So, pretty good, but not stunning. -- Bruce Thursday, April 12, 2007, 11:21:29 AM, you wrote: JB I like this shot. Re: Q: Pentax FA-J 75-300 ? Sigma 135-400 ?
Godfrey, Unfortunately, I don't have experience with either. I've been using Tamron 70-300 4-5.6 LD/Macro that I bought back in 1998. It is a reasonable lens. I found that the quality of the photos is comparable to what I am getting with SMCP-F-70-210 in the same range of focal lengths. It is noticeably soft in the range ~250-300, especially wide open. (That's the reason I've been considering Sigma 100-300/4 or something similar). I've done quite a few good shots with this lens. It is definitely a good buy for its price. When I was choosing, I believe there was a consensus that Tamron was better then the rival Sigma lens, and even then Pentax (100-300, and probably 80-320 if it was around at that point). I am not sure about the current version of Tamron (Di) lens, but the price range is comparable to that of Pentax 70-300. RE: Manual focus solution for istD series, Split image RF screen
I didnt do any controlled testing if this screen has any measurable change effect on metering, but so far with program mode using A lenses, screw lenses in AV mode, and PK/M lenses using stop down GB method I am not noticing any differences visibly. I use the centerweighted metering mode ususally. I guess I could put the old screen back in to do some controlled tests, but I like this one so much better that there is no way I am going back to the old screen even if there is a slight difference so I dont even want to bother fooling around with the old screen anymore. The split image really helps on this camera (istDS) for MF lenses and thats all I use... jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Boris Liberman Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2007 12:08 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Manual focus solution for istD series, Split image RF screen John, what about metering, notably center weighted and spot? With the kit lens (f/5.6) though, I found I have to be careful with eye placement to keep the split prism from blacking out. Also, I'm surprised you say that the GB hack works OK. I've found that with center-weighted (and especially spot), any more than f/8 and it blacks out and overexposes. Certainly not consistent. Bottom line, with S/K/M lenses (almost all of what I use too), many shots require a couple test fires with the check of the histogram to get it right. -Cory -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Boris Liberman Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2007 12:08 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: Manual focus solution for istD series, Split image RF screen John, what about metering, notably center weighted and spot? On Thu, 12 Apr 2007 10:36:13 -0700, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote A friend is looking for decent quality lens with a 300mm tele capability, at least. This is out of the range of my experience in Pentax lenses. Anyone worked with the FA-J75-300? or the Sigma 135-400? I know the Sigma 50-500 has a big following, but it's pricier than he can afford. The FAJ seems very inexpensive ... is it any good? thanks for any comments. Godfrey Hi Godfrey I've had the Sigma 135-400 APO, while not in the same league as the 50-500 it really is quite a good lens. My main gripe with the lens was the amount of extension and weight transferral when zoomed, it's at least as good as the 70- 300 APO Sigma, which I also had for some time. I believe the 50-500 does not change length when zoomed, it's definitely a different class of lens. I sold the 135-400 when I bought the 70-200/2.8 APO, which I use in conjunction with a 300/4 APO prime and two EX converters. Effectively the 70- 200 + 2x EX covers the 135-400 range I had previously with very acceptable results. Hope this helps.
