It looks like the Mac's have at least caught up with, or perhaps have
superceded PC's at this point. The only time I get bad colour off my PC
powered imaging station is it the printer gets a plugged jet, or I forget
which paper is loaded and use the wrong profile.

Re: OT - Image repair

2007-09-23 Thread graywolf
Not really, most libraries only keep the paper copies until the microfiche, or
CD, copies come out. In fact many just use an internet service for such things.
Most non-research libraries do not keep much of anything old anymore. Of course
the Library of Congress probably has a couple of original copies. But it is a
bit hard for the average Joe who does not live in DC to get at them.

Re: Replace or repair a fogged lens?

2007-09-23 Thread P. J. Alling
Sadly that's exactly the behavior my original lens had, except that I
was able to watch the "haze" spread from one side to the other over
time. It was very disheartening, especially as at the time the Pentax
was no longer repairing them. However since then supposedly Pentax has
started repairing them again. Maybe they found a bin of spare parts. The
quoted price I heard, was ~$85, but that was about a year ago, (I was
able to pick up a refurbished one for a bit less than that).

Funny you should ask. I asked the almost exact same

answer someone else asking about a flash for the ZX-5n
body. And I saved my response! Here it is...

A while back I asked a similar question and got some
good responses. It's been almost a year now and I
still haven't bought a flash. Turns out I prefer
ambient light and fast glass, so I haven't missed not
having a flash. Still, maybe someday...

A TTL (through-the-lens metering) flash would be a
good choice for the -5n. Pentax flashes include the
AF280T, AF360FTZ, AF500FTZ, AFyadaFTZ, etc. The
AF200T is smaller and doesn't have a swivel head, but
it's definately low profile. The Vivitar 283, 285 or
285HV, and Sunpak 383 are similar in features and have
been recommended by several PDMLers. Of course,
seeing as how I still haven't acquired a flash, I
can't vouch for any of this. :)

Here's a post from Alan Chan on flashes for use on
non-autofocus bodies like the Super Program.
--

Basically TTL flashes designed for Pentax AF bodies do
not work on Pentax non-AF bodies, other than full
manual. However, TTL flashes designed for Pentax
manual focus bodies do work on Pentax AF bodies. For
this reason, older Pentax TTL flashes like AF200T,
AF280T & AF400T work on ALL Pentax bodies and support
TTL flash.

An alternative is Metz flashes which you can switch
the shoe. For instance, Metz 40MZ3i with SCA372 shoe
can do TTL flashes on any Pentax bodies which can do
TTL flash. However, since SCA372 shoe was designed for
manual focus bodies (just like AF200T etc), features
like AF asist beam, auto zoom etc won't be usable on
AF bodies. For these advance features, you need the
digital shoe SCA3702 which was specially designed for
Pentax AF bodies (just like AF500FTZ). There might be
flashes from other brand can switch the shoe too, I am
not sure. But mind you that flash like 40MZ3i is quite
front heavy on small bodies like Super A/Program
(without winder attached), while it balances perfectly
on Z-1p.

--

This was posted by Michele Pozzi in March about Metz
flashes off-camera. The tips will probably work with
a 5n.
--

Below are some questions and answer I asked Metz
technical support. Seems that their accessory (around
50$) makes more sense than getting Pentax shoes and
cables.
They also do not know when HSS and Wireless will be
available.

anyway, its for your reference
Michele

Dear Michele,
when using the SCA3007A cable all flash features as
TTL etc will remain.

>>

>>
Dear Mr. Pozzi,
for off camera operation with your Metz 40MZ-3 we
recommend to use the cable SCA3007A.
The HSS and wireless is still not in planning, but, it
is conceivable that these flash features will come
anytime in the future.

---

For what it's worth, I have a Vivitar 2500 thyristor
flash for the ZX-5n and it would probably work on the
ZX-M, too. Don't remember where I got it, but I know
it was used and wy less than $100.

Hope it helps,

Ken,

That shot is stunning. The colors are great, and the
way you blended motion in the background and the wings
with sharp bodies is marvelous.

Used Nikon SB-24, 25 or 28. Just about the best deals on Auto/Manual
flashes available. More power, smaller package, better interface than
the old standards (the Vivitar 283 and 285) and they offer a real PC
Sync port, zoom, tilt/swivel heads.

I own a SB-24, SB-26 (which aren't all that cheap) and SB-28. I use them
as Auto & manual flashes on all my kit, including my Mamiya 645,
Spotmatic, Super Ricohflex TLR, Chinon CM-3, Nikon F2A & Nikkormat FTn,
and in the past my *istD, K100D, D50, MZ-5n, LX, MX and others. They
also occasionally get used as Nikon TTL flashes. very occasionally.

I agree, it could well be the result of inter element separation or
de-lamination of a plastic aspheric element (though I don't recall if
this lens has one of those).

Snails are more difficult to get good shot when they are in the
vegetation. If you disturb them, they withdraw into their shells, so
you have to leave the environment alone.

When I shot this guy, I wished some of the plant stalks weren't there.
But as I looked at it on a bigger screen, it almost seemed like spider
legs on him.

Almost looks like you were utilizing some race car shooting
techniques. It is actually pretty cool and unusual. The panning is
interesting because the head/body is pretty sharp, but the wings show
movement as does the background, so you see forward movement along
with wings flapping. Good work!

I'm sure the librarians would *love* to retain paper copies indefinitely.
Unfortunately in the real world somebody has to pay for all that climate

Hi Deb,

The SMC 28-70 f4 isn't sealed in any deliberate fashion so the drop
didn't let anything in. Assuming that it's just fogged and not
completely unusable the jolt may have dispersed dust or lubricants on
the internal lens surfaces otherwise the scenario you outlined is
really difficult to explain.

I would expect that the cost to clean or repair the lens would be
close to the cost of a used lens so you might just be best off trying
to find another used if you are overly attached to this particular
model.

Cheers,

Gawd, I hate printing!!!

2007-09-23 Thread Rick Womer
I decide to try to relax this afternoon by printing
some pix.

Big mistake.

First, printing from Lightroom is different from
printing from PSE4. I can't find a way to produce a
tiny proof-size photo in a specified spot on the page,
for example.

Second, THE DAMNED COLORS DON'T MATCH AGAIN! On this
photo, for example, the best print I can produce is
too dark, and everything is magenta-shifted:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6108764&size=lg

I'm using Lightroom and PSE4 on a Mac running OS 10.4,
and an Epson RX500 printer with Premium Glossy Photo
Paper. I've run a zillion tests with all sorts of
combinations of settings, and things consistently suck
(though in a variety of different ways!).

If some patient and knowledgable person would be
willing to contact me off-list, I would be most
grateful.

Rick

If you are thinking of buying it, it would be a great help to me if you
did that within the next few days because lulu pays me at the end of each
month through paypal and I'm broke as all get out. :)

nothing I can do about it, I'm afraid although some of my images do
have a fair amount of noise -
even the quiet ones are noisy on lulu.

I don't think most of my shots in the book translate well to viewers for
whom English is a second language or
even to those who have always spoken English but live on the otherside

probably not be "gotten" by those a lot younger than I am. I do hope a

Re: Upcoming October PUG and ultimatum

2007-09-23 Thread graywolf
Kind of interesting that you pop up with NZ being an island (a couple
actually),
but I do not see any mention of NZ in my post. Also NZ averages much farther
south than Australia.

Australia may be the smallest continent, but it is still a continent and I do
not think it can be called a small land mass. I will not argue about water
moderating weather as I grew up in Michigan. Still, I notice that most of the
population of Australia is on the south coast. For what it is worth Sydney
seems
to be about the same latitude south as San Diego is north. None of this is any
kind of news to those down under, but may be to one or two of us in the US.

BTW, Mexico has water on both sides and the trade winds blow across it still it
is kind of warm down there. Also the UK is tempered by the warm gulfstream
current just being surrounded by water does not moderate their weather all that
much by itself.

Mike,

If only the world worked the way we think it should. My brother found
the obit in the Boston Public Library as a microfilm copy of the paper.
The Library doesn't retain newspapers after they have been microfilmed.
The film company does the filming in return for copy rights and supplies
the Library with a copy of the film at no charge.

Ann,

It works for me now too. It asked for password earlier.

I can see you in the first image. For this batch, I like the second one
the best.

I checked the preview in lulu, it looks like the preview has lower
quality images. I see a lot of dithering effect in them.

glad someone caught that right away!

It would be interesting to compare some of the photos displayed on smug

the preview on lulu - thinking about that other thread -- my images

2007-09-23 Thread Mark Roberts
Oz-boy Casey Stoner just won the MOTO GP world Championship for Ducati
:)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/motorbikes/7008950.stm

It's the first time in donkey's years that a non-Japanese maker has won
the world championship. In a curious kind of symmetry (or poetic
justice?), Ducati and Stoner achieved the feat on Bridgestone tires,
ending almost as many years of Michelin dominance and marking the first
time a Japanese tire makes has captured the crown.

I've been pretty much the same way for approximately the past two
years. Since the ICC profile adds about 3k to the image size, I skip it
for thumbnails (I like my pages to be lean and fast as much as
possible), but all my display images get the profile embedded.

I still have tons of old stuff on line that needs to be updated (or
just tossed out), though...
