shutter count
I'm sure this is just stupidity on my part but I'm fairly new to the K10D as well. I bought my camera nearly new a month ago. Every time I download the pictures via the card reader, I delete all the images on the card when it is back in the camera. Unfortunately the numbering system reverts to 0001 each time, which means you had better download to a new directory each time, (which I would do normally anyway) if you don't want to overwrite previous images. Last night my wife borrowed the camera and got some excellent Halloween pictures of the grandchildren which were downloaded in the normal way, the card being subsequently cleared. Later in the evening i took some not very good firework pictures on the same card. Fortunately I was prompted by the computer about overwriting images when I attempted to download them to the same directory as earlier, so I am still living at the same address!! I've even looked at the manual without success. I'm sure this wasn't a problem on my DS. Any hints? Re: Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL IF - is it reallyworth 1000USD?
My 2 main impressions at the moment are: 1) It is sharp, 2) More prone to CA than my 16-45. I just looked through the 100 or so photos I've made so far with the DA*16-50, and compared them with similar photos I made with the DA16-45. I see less CA and nicer corner/edge rendering performance, particularly at short focal length settings, with the DA* lens. Hmm, interesting. I've seen some very noticable CA with my DA*16-50 also. I've not really compared it to the 16-45, but its definitely noticable. PESO: Abandoned - Take 2
From: Brian Walters Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions on this image. Most comments thought that the colours in the image were over-saturated. The colours *are* strong, but that's due to the rusty tones and the very warm, late afternoon light. I'm not adverse to nudging the saturation from time to time but this image didn't receive any extra. Of course the image might benefit from a slightly less saturated rendering so the link below has a version with a 10% reduction (and I took a bit of blue out of the sky as well). I have to say I still prefer the original which is more like I remember the scene, and which is also shown for comparison: http://members.westnet.com.au/brianwal/Abandoned/index.html Also on this page is a black and white rendering - something suggested by Dave Brooks. It seems to have possibilities but I haven't nailed it yet and I'm not sure exactly where to go with it. The distracting background was also mentioned. It was difficult to get the right angle with this image. There was a road sign and an old shack that I was trying to conceal. There was also a large, hyperactive hound behind a not very substantial fence about 50 metres away so, bugger the background, I was a bit distracted as well... :-) The truck looks better desaturated as in image 2, but the background sky looks better in either image 1 or 3. Neither of the BW conversions does much for me, but the lower contrast version is the better of the two. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Should I buy a DA* 16-50mm? Is it really worh the appr. 1000 USD most dealers charge? Any experiences or comments are welcome. Regards Can't answer your primary question, but I recommend contacting Tokina regarding repair to your lens. My experience in that regard was *VERY* positive. I have the AT-X Pro 28-70 f/2.8 [second hand from KEH] and dropped it onto a concrete floor from waist height just before I deployed to Iraq in 2004. Damaged the focus and zoom mechanisms. I contacted Tokina via email to see if they would repair it and if they could ship it to an APO address. They told me they could. I sent a letter along with the lens explaining that: 1. I purchased it used 2. The damage was due to my own negligence 3. They would have to contact me by email so I could arrange payment for the repair before they sent it back. The next thing I heard from them was 3 - 4 months later when the lens arrived in Iraq, repaired under warranty. It was good as new, which with this lens, is pretty damn good. Picasaweb resizes photos on the fly to fit your browser window and also has an option to view the original file. Hi Thibouille, Sorry for the belated reply Things appear to be calm now but Hoya announced a couple of days ago that they finally reached an agreement with Pentax to merge effective March 31, 2008 (originally schedule for this month). In there, they outlined what they want to do with Pentax. Name of the new company would be Hoya, so Pentax Corp. will end. But new company will keep the Pentax brand. Among others, they have following visions on Imaging System area. 1. They will consolidate (translation: eliminate) cheaper PS digital cameras as it is very difficult to differentiate themselves in this category. They will only pursue something unique and perhaps higher priced. 2. They will continue development of PS digicam with unique features and capabilities in the price bracket of over $600~$700. 3. In general, they set the target to the market that has more than average attractions to cameras and photography in general, i.e., enthusiast market. They will concentrate the effort in developing higher end cameras even if the price might be higher. Hoya will back it up. 4. DSLR offers higher margins and Hoya will continue and strengthen thye business of DSLR and lenses. So, sounds like the sky is not falling after all, and Pentax seem to have succeeded to obtain Hoya's understanding and support to continue and strengthen their camera business. Re FF DSLR, there is no more significant rumours except that the launching of FF DSLR became more plausible because of Hoya's position above. Pentax somehow developing their own CMOS is still a strong rumour base, although I personally doubt it. But you never know, now that Pentax no longer is allowed to play in the congested (and bloody competitive) entry level market. And CMOS is much easier to make compared with CCD which requires large investment. Any semiconductor plant, which is abundant everywhere can be converted to CMOS plant. All in all, it's a good news and Pentax is probably preparing something for the near future, now that Hoya has formally announced the merger. I like the look of the pages, minimal advertising and the simple upload process. They offer a wide variety of forums and gallery options as well. Paul -- Original message -- From: John Sessoms [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ya'll may have noticed I don't post any images. That's 'cause I don't have any place to post 'em. I'd like some suggestions on which service I might go with ... some pros cons - cost, available space, ease of use, etc. Also, any thoughts you might wish to share on preparing images for posting; sizing, jpeg quality, ... In the longer term, I plan to create my own website. This is to be for a photography business - weddings portraiture most likely, with some fine art. I'm near retirement and hope to supplement my income. I don't expect to make a lot of money; I understand it's a very competitive field, but any income will enable me to write off my equipment purchases, and possibly some travel, as a business expense. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

John Sessoms wrote: From: Brendan MacRae Ok, so I pop in another card and hand the full one to my assistant selling dye-sub prints to guests. Then go shoot some more. I'd get me a runner to handle the cards. That assistant needs to stay there at the printer. You could miss a lot of sales while he's going back and forth. WiFi is a lot cheaper than a runner, buy once instead of pay every time. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
