shutter count

2007-11-01 Thread Peter Fairweather
I'm sure this is just stupidity on my part but I'm fairly new to the
K10D as well.

I bought my camera nearly new a month ago. Every time I download the
pictures via the card reader, I delete all the images on the card when
it is back in the camera. Unfortunately the numbering system reverts
to 0001 each time, which means you had better download to a new
directory each time, (which I would do normally anyway) if you don't
want to overwrite previous images.

Last night my wife borrowed the camera and got some excellent
Halloween pictures of the grandchildren which were downloaded in the
normal way, the card being subsequently cleared.

Later in the evening i took some not very good firework pictures on
the same card. Fortunately I was prompted by the computer about
overwriting images when I attempted to download them to the same
directory as earlier, so I am still living at the same address!!

I've even looked at the manual without success. I'm sure this wasn't a
problem on my DS. Any hints?

Many thanks

I've also had another go at the BW conversion with a less contrasty

Re: Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL IF - is it reallyworth 1000USD?

2007-11-01 Thread Peter Loveday
My 2 main impressions at the moment are:

 1) It is sharp,
 2) More prone to CA than my 16-45.

I just looked through the 100 or so photos I've made so far with the
DA*16-50, and compared them with similar photos I made with the
DA16-45. I see less CA and nicer corner/edge rendering performance,
particularly at short focal length settings, with the DA* lens.

Hmm, interesting. I've seen some very noticable CA with my DA*16-50 also.
I've not really compared it to the 16-45, but its definitely noticable.

I saw a link to this was posted by Ned Bunnell on his blog last night.
From The Pentaximaging.com site:
LETTER TO PENTAX CUSTOMERS October 31, 2007
To our customers,

On October 29, 2007, HOYA Corporation and PENTAX Corporation, a consolidated
subsidiary of HOYA announced that we have entered into a merger agreement
with respect to a merger which will become effective on March 31, 2008.

Following the merger, based on the common core technological foundation in
optics, imaging, and materials, the new company will optimize its business
portfolios, focusing on the life care, optics, information technology, eye
care,
imaging system areas. All PENTAX business divisions will be optimized within
the same framework of the HOYA's other business divisions to strengthen its
business. By doing so, better communication, prompt management decision, and
proper resource allocation will be assured. We continue to devote our
efforts to make even more outstanding the PENTAX brand even after the
merger.

PENTAX promises to provide more satisfactory products and service to our
customers. So, we will ask your continuous support to PENTAX Corporation and
the HOYA Corporation following the merger.

Re: PESO: Abandoned - Final Take

The contrast in the second conversion is still a bit high for my
tastes. It really doesn't need that much. Still it is an improvement.

Doug Franklin wrote:

Thanks to all for the help with this image.

I think this final rendering (see link below) is about as good as I'm going
to get. Basically I've nudged the mid tones a bit and then desaturated both
RGB and red slightly. This also has the effect of lessening the intense
 orange colour.

I've also had another go at the BW conversion with a less contrasty
 rendering.

Anyway, here's the link to all five variations.

Personally, I prefer the original to the other two color variations, and
the second of the B+W conversions.

Anybody hear about a battery factory fire delaying a camera launch?
Another list mentioned Pentax sueing Matushita over battery
availability, claiming a new camera launch was postponed from November
to February because of no batteries. (September fire has closed all
 production)

We crap on them because they launch cameras and then are slow to launch
lenses. Can you imagine how we'd moan if they released a camera with no
batteries available?

Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. It just doesn't do anything for me.

I go back to it with everyone's comments. I look at it, I try to appreciate
it, but I just don't see anything there to appreciate.

Ya don't like it then ya don't like it... but for many of us there is a
 reference point -

Of course, liking it isn't quite right - because it is disturbing. You
 never mentioned if you
were familiar with and of the films we've associated this photo with - the
 1950's Body snatchers film,
The Truman Show, Pleasantville. Just curious. It is one photo where
shooting really fast with a digital
camera enhanced it. Hell of a capture for a grab shot I say. Did Imention I
 liked it? :)

 ann

It's not a question of like or dislike, it just is.

I'm familiar with all of the films mentioned. None of them really
appealed to me either.

It is a hell of a capture for a grab shot, but it looks contrived.

Ok kids, you've seen the humans, but we've got to hurry if you want to
see the whale skeletons ...

Web Hosting and Image Posting

Ya'll may have noticed I don't post any images.

That's 'cause I don't have any place to post 'em. I'd like some

Also, any thoughts you might wish to share on preparing images for

In the longer term, I plan to create my own website. This is to be for a
photography business - weddings portraiture most likely, with some
fine art.

I'm near retirement and hope to supplement my income. I don't expect to
make a lot of money; I understand it's a very competitive field, but any
income will enable me to write off my equipment purchases, and possibly
some travel, as a business expense.

PESO: Abandoned - Take 2

2007-11-01 Thread John Sessoms
From: Brian Walters

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions on this image.

Most comments thought that the colours in the image were
over-saturated. The colours *are* strong, but that's due to the
rusty tones and the very warm, late afternoon light. I'm not adverse
to nudging the saturation from time to time but this image didn't
receive any extra. Of course the image might benefit from a slightly
less saturated rendering so the link below has a version with a 10%
reduction (and I took a bit of blue out of the sky as well). I have
to say I still prefer the original which is more like I remember the
scene, and which is also shown for comparison:

 http://members.westnet.com.au/brianwal/Abandoned/index.html

Also on this page is a black and white rendering - something
suggested by Dave Brooks. It seems to have possibilities but I
haven't nailed it yet and I'm not sure exactly where to go with it.

The distracting background was also mentioned. It was difficult to
get the right angle with this image. There was a road sign and an
old shack that I was trying to conceal. There was also a large,
hyperactive hound behind a not very substantial fence about 50 metres
away so, bugger the background, I was a bit distracted as well...
 :-)

The truck looks better desaturated as in image 2, but the background sky
looks better in either image 1 or 3.

Neither of the BW conversions does much for me, but the lower contrast
version is the better of the two.

re: Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL IF - is it really worth 1000 USD?

 Hello list
I just sold a whole bunch of photographs.
And my second Tokina AT-X 2.6-2.8 28-70mm Pro II has got an impact damage.
It won't focus at infinity at 28mm anymore.
Should I buy a DA* 16-50mm? Is it really worh the appr. 1000 USD most
 dealers charge?
Any experiences or comments are welcome.
 Regards

Can't answer your primary question, but I recommend contacting Tokina
regarding repair to your lens. My experience in that regard was *VERY*
positive.

I have the AT-X Pro 28-70 f/2.8 [second hand from KEH] and dropped it
onto a concrete floor from waist height just before I deployed to Iraq
in 2004. Damaged the focus and zoom mechanisms.

I contacted Tokina via email to see if they would repair it and if they
could ship it to an APO address. They told me they could.

I sent a letter along with the lens explaining that:
1. I purchased it used
2. The damage was due to my own negligence
3. They would have to contact me by email so I could arrange payment for
the repair before they sent it back.

The next thing I heard from them was 3 - 4 months later when the lens
arrived in Iraq, repaired under warranty.

It was good as new, which with this lens, is pretty damn good.

Congratulations on your sale.

Both Flickr and Picasaweb will resize photos as needed. Flickr, I
believe, has a set size for initial display along with the option of
viewing larger files. Picasaweb resizes photos on the fly to fit your
browser window and also has an option to view the original file. Both
are fairly easy to use and would be suitable for showing photos to the
list/family/friends, etc. Both also require javascript, which most
folks probably have enabled. IMHO, Picasa's site loads faster and is
easier to navigate. However, it won't work at all without JS enabled.
Flickr will, though it will berate your viewers for not having their
browser set the way Flickr likes it.

Picasa required a gmail account. http://picasaweb.google.com/ Cotty
has invites if you need one.
Flickr requires a yahoo account. http://www.flickr.com/

In the longer term, I plan to create my own website. This is to be for a

I really think you need to use something other than a free photo hosting
site for this sort of thing. Web hosting is cheap, however, and you
have lots of options. I use 1and1.com. It's cheap and their front end
is easy enough to use. It's a big, faceless organization and,
fortunately, I haven't had any problems. If you're running a business
you might want to spend a bit more to go with a smaller host that has
real, live people to talk to.

On 10/31/07 9:01 AM, Thibouille, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Were you able to grab any new information on Pentax future ?

Hi Thibouille,

Sorry for the belated reply
Things appear to be calm now but Hoya announced a couple of days ago that
they finally reached an agreement with Pentax to merge effective March 31,
2008 (originally schedule for this month).
In there, they outlined what they want to do with Pentax.

Name of the new company would be Hoya, so Pentax Corp. will end. But new
company will keep the Pentax brand.
Among others, they have following visions on Imaging System area.

1. They will consolidate (translation: eliminate) cheaper PS digital
cameras as it is very difficult to differentiate themselves in this
category. They will only pursue something unique and perhaps higher priced.

2. They will continue development of PS digicam with unique features and
capabilities in the price bracket of over $600~$700.

3. In general, they set the target to the market that has more than average
attractions to cameras and photography in general, i.e., enthusiast market.
They will concentrate the effort in developing higher end cameras even if
the price might be higher. Hoya will back it up.

4. DSLR offers higher margins and Hoya will continue and strengthen thye
business of DSLR and lenses.

So, sounds like the sky is not falling after all, and Pentax seem to have
succeeded to obtain Hoya's understanding and support to continue and
strengthen their camera business.

Re FF DSLR, there is no more significant rumours except that the launching
of FF DSLR became more plausible because of Hoya's position above. Pentax
somehow developing their own CMOS is still a strong rumour base, although I
personally doubt it. But you never know, now that Pentax no longer is
allowed to play in the congested (and bloody competitive) entry level
market. And CMOS is much easier to make compared with CCD which requires
large investment. Any semiconductor plant, which is abundant everywhere can
be converted to CMOS plant.

All in all, it's a good news and Pentax is probably preparing something for
the near future, now that Hoya has formally announced the merger.

Cheers,

Ken

Re: Web Hosting and Image Posting

2007-11-01 Thread pnstenquist
I like photo.net. I've been on there for quite a few years. It's faster than
most services, easy to use and heavily populated. Thus, you can get a lot of
feedback if you so desire. It's $25 a year for unlimited uploads. You can also
upload witout paying a fee, but your photos will remain on only as long as
managment deems fit. I like the look of the pages, minimal advertising and the
simple upload process. They offer a wide variety of forums and gallery options
as well.

Ya'll may have noticed I don't post any images.

That's 'cause I don't have any place to post 'em. I'd like some
suggestions on which service I might go with ... some pros cons -
cost, available space, ease of use, etc.

Also, any thoughts you might wish to share on preparing images for
 posting; sizing, jpeg quality, ...

Ok, so I pop in another card and hand the full one to
my assistant selling dye-sub prints to guests.

 Then go shoot some more.

I'd get me a runner to handle the cards. That assistant needs to stay
 there at the printer.

You could miss a lot of sales while he's going back and forth.

WiFi is a lot cheaper than a runner, buy once instead of pay every time.

I have been happy with them and probably considered a very low use customer.
