Re: JFK on cycling, to cheer up the accident prone

2007-12-01 Thread Cotty

I have just discovered the following quotation:

 "Nothing compares with the
simple pleasure of a bike ride"
 John F Kennedy

Coming from a man who shagged Marilyn Monroe, and thought 'first lady'
meant the one he had before breakfast, that has got to be a good
 recommendation.

>>> Perhaps Marilyn wasn't really that good in bed..
>>>
>>
>> Or perhaps JFK just prefered sex with bicycles.
>>
>>
>>
>Do you think he wore a helmet?

It was purple.

FS Friday: FA 80-200 mm 2.8

2007-12-01 Thread Carlos Royo
I still have the FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8 and have reduced the asking price
once more, as I would rather sell it to a PDML member:

FA 80-200 mm. 2.8 LN- (almost like new), boxed, with its original Pentax
pouch and pouch strap, front and back caps and original lenshood. It's
only got a small blemish: between the first and second element, it has a
very small hazy spot only visible at a certain angle, which doesn't
affect the quality of the pictures at all. I took it to my usual repair
shop, and they said it wasn't fungus and it wasn't worth opening the
lens to clean such a small spot. They also said that special tooling was
needed to open the lens in case I wanted to have it cleaned and it
should be sent to an official Pentax service centre.
I can send photos of the lens to prospective buyers. Price: now 1200
euros plus shipping expenses.

I am the original owner of this lens.

If you are interested in it, please send a message to my email box, not
the list. Shipping expenses are not included in the price.

Thank you for your attention.

Carlos

links apparently blocked

2007-12-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
Every message I send to the list with a link, whether it be a paw or
peso, has been blocked. My apologies if they all show up at once. I
think I tried to send a PESO message about five times over the last
twenty hours. Don't know where they're blocked. I thought at first it
was the Comcast servers. But a test showed that a message with a link
will go through to other addresses. Could it be the list? I'm
scratching my head.

Thank you, Frank.

It was a quiet still moment when the birds had departed. I was hoping to evoke

What version of DNG Converter are you using? I think it was versions
prior to DNG Converter v3.2 that would 'hide' certain makernotes/
private data, all later versions should have it embedded in the file.
If you reprocess older DNGs with the latest DNG Converter (v4.3), it
should restore the data unless it was simply elided.

The DA* lenses are so new that none of them were converted to DNG
with anything other than the latest conversion.

I was converting all files to DNG with DNG Converter until Lightroom
came out; I reprocessed all at some point. Now I convert all files to
DNG on the fly using Lightroom's "convert file to DNG and copy to a
new format" Import setting. All the lens names are interpreted
correctly now.

Re: Denied

2007-12-01 Thread Bruce Dayton
An interesting issue brings itself forward when the voting is so open
like this. There have been quite a few photos shown on this list
(including a few of mine) where some of the members can't see the
deeper shadows - essentially a hardware problem - could be calibration
or just problem monitors. So when a photo is voted on, not only are
you at the mercy of the voters, but if their monitors don't/can't show
the subtle details, your image could get panned. A fairly recent one
of mine shown here did just that.
http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/ptreyes_0137a.htm
Based on the list response, I thought this one would make it. There
were some responders on the list here who could not see the foreground
details and thought there was too much black in the foreground.

What I am getting at, is that the odds of a subtle image making it
through now is even harder because of variance of equipment being used
to view the photos for judging.

Thoughts?

I don't think I originally commented on that shot, so I will now by
saing I quite like it.

And for the record I can see details in the foreground, but I can also
see some of noise. Which detracts from the overall effect somewhat

Re: Denied

2007-12-01 Thread Bob Sullivan
Bruce,

It's not just equipment, it's viewing conditions as well.
I see less subtle dark details here than I do in the basement.
Here I use my laptop with a 3 pane sliding glass door right behind me
- north light.
In the basement I'm a troglidite. Weak 60 watt lights in the ceiling
leaves it dark!
You see different things on the 20 inch LCD in the basement.

And as before, I like the photo. The crescent moon is an eye magnet!

Hi, Bruce, you make a good point!
I have a clear recollection of the image and my (and other) 'too dark'
responses to it. I may be wrong, again, but it seems that when a "too
dark" comment was made, you indicated you were happy with the exposure.
I saw the image when voting and noted it was obviously lighter. There
had been others who felt it would benefit from being able to make out
more detail and I, of course, thought you had acquiesced to that idea.

No idea what the problem is. But, Paul, PDML is plain text, so you shouldn't
be able to send a link to it anyway. I have AOL email, which gives me the
option to format my emails as plain ASCII text. Since AOL's normal mode is
embedded html in email.

All you really have to do, Paul, is find a way to format your email so it is
plain ASCII text, then a link isn't a link it's just another text string.

Have you recently changed email clients? If so, a lot use embedded html or

what you have to do to reformat your email messages.

Which is, of course, the problem with computer images in general. Then we have
the Apple 1.8 gamma vs. Windows 2.2 gamma problem. And those are a problem even
on well calibrated systems. Then you have the, "Calibration, what's
calibration?", folks out there. And to top it off you have the personal
preferences problem, do you prefer a somewhat highkey or a somewhat lowkey
image. At least in the days of chemical prints you could move the image into
the
proper light if you were a perfectionist.

Even more: with LCD displays, it also depends on the angle of view. For
instance, if I'm sitting in my chair in my normal, relaxed position, then I can
barely make sense of the foreground. It is enough to raise my head a few inches
and I can already see the grass. A lot depends on the ambient light, too. So,
yes, you're at the mercy of these random conditions. But, equally well, people
judging your photos are not necessarily experts, in the same way that people
voting for, say, presidential elections are not necessarily subtle political
analysts. In a serious competition you'd probably not encounter this kind of
problems (hopefully).

Paul,

try a post with a link and CC yourself and some list folk. (I am

thing.

I'd agree with Marnie - your eMail client is probably formatting
messages including links as HTML rather than as plain text. That,
of course, will cause the list server to reject them.

People posting links successfully are probably using an email client
that's "less intelligent" (i.e. one that just does what you tell it,
not what it thinks you probably want to do).

Re: links apparently blocked

2007-12-01 Thread Inner Focus
It cannot be html formatting. I've got two arguments to back this up:

1) together with my GESO about the Esparron lake in Provence, I had sent other
2 mails. They were both formatted *exactly* like the one that got through on
PDML, yet they got lost somewhere... (Plus, I explicitely set Yahoo mail to
format my mails as ASCII.)

2) A few days ago I began receiving reply messages with the subject "Re:
Denied". That was strange, since I hadn't received the initial "Denied" post. I
thought I had deleted it by mistake, but in fact it arrived only the next day.

In my case, it looks like some server, between Yahoo and PDML, does not forward
mail properly. The reason that one of my mails made it and the others not is
that mails from A to B do not necessarily follow all the same route.

Please also recall that in my message (a few days ago) about Sigma HSM I had
included (as plain text, as usual) a link pointing to the Wikipedia article
about ultrasonic motors. That message made it, too. So, it's quite random. Some
server probably drops mail messages, without acknowledging it. Which is quite
irritating.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've never had a problem before, and I
haven't changed mail servers. I did update the Opsys but that
shouldn't have changed my mail settings. I did review my preferences
and noticed that the box for "rich text" was checked. I changed it to
plain text, and I'll try again. Perhaps that setting was somehow
altered. However, I should note that all the PESO messages I get
include a live link. Perhaps my software converts it when displaying.
Don't know.

Paw: First snow

2007-12-01 Thread Francis
Hi every one!

This buck has been coming to our house every winter for the last three
years to collect the apples that I put out for him.
When I first met him he was the cutest little fawn but now he's getting
to be almost intimidating with those flash new antlers.

Taken with: Ist DS + K200mm F2.8 + tripod at 1/45, 200 iso, F4 (or
maybe 5.6).

Merry Christmas and thanks for looking,

Very nice portrait - beautifully sharp. However, I think framing on
your webpage doesn't do it full justice - it's kind of small, and I
think the broad white frame detracts from the image and robs screen
real estate which could be better employed showing us a larger image.

Me also. (The first time.)
The url has a line brake in it so you have to cut and past the query
string from the nest line (including the "?" that is on the same line as
the link but for some reason not "hot") in to your browser.

cumsa:

By the way Paul:
Very nice light/tonality, especially on the hat and jacket. The
highlight by the chin bugs me a little but I guess it was unavoidable.
Good work.

Yes, same here with the line break after "photo?".

Very nice image with excellent tone (even though I'm viewing it in my

Thanks for the suggestions Jack.
It may seem weird, but because I mostly do nature photography and people
are continuously asking me "oh my gosh! Did you like photoshop that or
something?" I try not to do anything other than subtle global
adjustments to the photos that I put up for sale. On the other hand, I
do like to fiddle with them just for fun so maybe I'll try it. :)

Thank you Alastair,
I was actually worried that I might have way over sharpened it!

Thank you also for the feedback about the web layout, we have the photos
small intentionally so that they don't make such enticing free micro
stock for anyone who happens upon them (also my screen is so small that
they barely fit as it is) but the frame might be worth rethinking. Any
one else have an opinion?

PS.
Is it bad pdml etiquette to plug up the list with replies to peoples
comments? Or is it bad etiquette not to reply to peoples comments? Or both?

Only seems proper etiquette to respond in some way. Not doing so, can,
I suppose, be felt inconsiderate by some. Even a generic such
as.."thanks to all those who commented" will certainly do.

I think there is too much thanking on the list. Some people
individually thank everyone who made a comment. This is not really
necessary. We should all take it as read that we are all grateful for
comments. At most a 'thanks to everyone who commented' should be
enough.

Found this in the AM...

Cropped a bit from a shot with the K10D & A400/5.6.
Resting on the car window, 1/90th and F5.6 at ASA800.

This Heron must be a bit confused as the lake was completely covered by ice.
He really didn't fly off as he usually does when we get this close.
