So, wanting to just be yourself, and not intrested in changing how you do
things makes you a troll? I fail to see how you could possibly find any logic
in that statement.

I fear he's also somewhat of a foolish one. The wisest (albeit
hardest) course of action here would be to refrain from posting.
Everything I've seen of Polyhead makes me believe he's the
classic troll - one who feeds on attention, and isn't in the
least interested in changing his behaviour.

The best thing to do is to simply ignore him - trying to
engage him in an argument is just letting him pick the rules.

PESO: Floating on Lilies

2007-12-21 Thread Bong Manayon
Hello...

Sort of made a new year's resolve - post more often! And why wait for
the new year? :-)

http://www.bong.uni.cc/peso/2007-01.htm

It's a sunrise shot on a nearby lake. I was hoping to get a water
foreground except it strewn with water lilies. I had to fire the
built-in flash of the DS for this one.

Thanks for looking!

Re: My uncle's photos. Longish.

2007-12-21 Thread Stan Halpin
Lasse - interesting project you have inherited!

I wonder - no dates imprinted on the borders of the slide mounts?
Standard practice for most processors here in the states...

Two separate thoughts.
1. Long ago and far away a friend and I assembled a "best of the
year" slide show based on slides contributed by members of our
climbing club. My friend was an editor with National Geographic, and
in her office she had a light table that has huge - probably 3 meters
by 1 meter. Made it very easy to lay out dozens and dozens and dozens
of slides, sort them, rearrange them... You might want to think about
how to improvise something like that to help in your sorting.

2. This situation with your uncle's photos is a case where perfection
should not be the standard of success! Don't worry if you cannot
identify each and every person, each venue, and the dates associated.
Don't think like a historian or archivist, think like a photographer!
Go through and pick out "interesting" photos - those with good
natural portraits of people, good scenic and texture and detail.
Assemble a show and or publish a book of the photos. Get the citizens
to view the results, they will be glad to help with the
identification of the historical details. Get local historians and
librarians involved in the historical part, and you keep on digging
for the good photographs within the archive.

Best of luck. A great opportunity, interesting challenge.

Re: Portland Fountains

2007-12-21 Thread graywolf
Well, the problem you see is that Graywolf is not my on-line name, my business
cards say Tom "Graywolf" Rittenhouse. Most people knew me by that name even
before I ever was on-line. Although I will admit that it came about as a
reaction to "handles", I had so many I sometimes didn't know who I was. Let's
see is that my CB Handle, my Trail Name, my Rainbow Name, my Nickname...? One
Name that is who I am; and a legal designation that satisfies the government,
that's it.

However, I understand where folks around here are coming from, they are just a
class of people who do not use nicknames. Strangely it is not the few locals
that have the problem, they are mostly OK with it, it is the well to do
retirees, and dropped-out hippies (this town is full of hippies that came up
here in the 70's and are now the squarest people you could imagine) that have
the the problem. People are just funny, that's all. Me, I'm no different, I'm
just funny in different ways than most.

Y'know, I've grown up knowing a large on-line community - from way
back when when we all used 300 or 1200-baud modems to dial into
bulletin boards. Even back in 1985 we were having gatherings where
we'd get together and I couldn't call people by their "handles",
"tags" or "aliases" comfortably. Frankly, I like addressing people by
their real names - that's just one of my hangups.

This was back when my online name was "random entry" (because I
couldn't think of a username the first board I logged onto) and I
still have people in town when I'm at a party who will call me
"random". H.

Of course, if a person prefers to go by their alias, I can be trained
to use it. But if no preference is expressed, I go for the REAL name.

Awesome. I'll bet it would look great printed BIG and hung on a wall in a
room with smooth concrete flooring. I'm talking HUGE. No frame, either.
Just mount it on gatorfoam and stick it to the wall with a very thin
adhesive. That's how I see it in my mind, anyway.

Also: the red leaves in the cracks look like blood and/or lava. Gives it an
almost-living feeling, for me.

Agreed. As cliche as it may be, I think I'd like it more with the black

I can no imagine why someone would use a name like Bob, or George, or Tom

"Hi, my name is Tom Rittenhouse, my friends call me Graywolf."

"Nice to meet you Mister Rittenhouse."

Then they wonder why I don't consider them friends... when they have all but
told me they weren't and didn't want to be.

Thanks Charles.

Yes, you're right: I'm gathering on average 200-300 exposures a week
and posting about a photos every couple of days. I'm going to change

It's a nice shot, Bruce.
When I saw this in a Pentax Gallery voting set, I thought; if the face
had been dodged a bit and the small blown out area of hair in the lower
center burned in a little, it would have a real chance.
It may do so in any case, just my thoughts at the time.

Re: Watch that white balance, folks!

2007-12-21 Thread Ken Waller
> What's white balance?

Better called white point.

I was referring to looking @ the image's histogram in levels & ensuring the
whitest white in the image was @ the far RH portion of the histogram without
blowing out the details (clipping) & also ensuring the blackest black
(shadow detail) in the image was @ the far LH portion. In levels, holding
the alt/option key gives you a clipping preview as you adjust the white
point slider. Using the alt/option key, while adjusting the black point
slider shows you where you're losing shadow detail in the image.

Hi, Christine,

Thanks for your suggestion. It's a good one, except for the fact that there
actually no longer is that much of a family, useful for these photos, to
gather... : /.
However, I have already by phone talked a lot to my aunt, a favourite
relative of mine and kid sister of my uncle, now approaching her 80s, living
in Sweden. And we've decided to get together come spring when she'll come
visiting again.
I don't want to wait that long, so I will send her a selection of photos to
view and identify when she's spending Christmas with her sons (she doesn't
use a computer). She will get some Christmas present for sure. Her brother
shot a number of very nice portraits of her which she probably has never
seen, as well as many other family pictures of her and her family. She and I
(like my mother, her sister, who passed away ten years ago) both share this
interest and joy of documenting and caring of "everything family", so to
speak.

I have also talked to a number of other people, relatives of my uncle's wife
as well as just people from around here who remember him, events and places
etc.. I also have a list of people, friends of his (in some instances also
of me) who can not only be of great help to me, but probably also will be
greatly surprised with many "new" great pictures of themselves, their family
and friends, many of which are long gone. As soon as I get a useful
selection of pictures gathered I will approach them, either bringing them
prints or inviting them to come by for coffee and a show at my computer
screen.

Thanks,
Lasse

Re: PESO: A fifties chrome

2007-12-21 Thread Igor Roshchin

Paul,

It's a nice retro-looking photo.
(Maybe not so retro-looking model - I suspect the hair style was
different back then. - Bingo, that's what in this picture was not quite
50-60s for me.)

There is a strange thing that bothers me a little bit.
Some areas of the skin look a bit bleached out, - e.g.
around model's left (right for us) eye, just above the arm-pit,
the "tip" of the shoulder area, just around carpal joint.
I don't know if it was on the original photograph.
It may be due to the "retro"-conversion of the highlights.
It is, however, possible that it's just my laptop's screen.
(If the latter is the case, I apologize for this noise.)

Igor

Hi, John,

Make that desire come true, as soon as possible. You won't regret it. (While
you bitterly will, in case something happens to them before you get
there...:) )
If your father is still around, bring paper and pen and make notes.
If he's no longer around, track down any- and everyone available who may be
able to help out in bringing those photos alive.

It is a fascinating journey to make, if you will. And if you get hold of old
negatives, not seldom "large medium format" and much more "densed" with
information than regular 35mm film, it's amazing what you can bring out of
them. (I recently bought an Epson V700 scanner which will scan any negative
up to A4 size). Hell, even small Instamatic negs keep astonishing me by what
can be retrieved by some digital tweaking, in case they need some.

Thanks,
Lasse

Radio-telegraphist is OK but radio-telegrapher would be better.

I hope you manage to do something with this archive. For me, when faced with
huge tasks like this, the only way is to make sure that I do _something_ every
day until it is finished, no matter how small that something is.

Maybe a local museum would be interested in getting some of the donkey work

In any case, I would dearly like to see some of them myself.

Thanks, Paul.

Yes I will soon post a few samples for you all to see.
I already have started scanning while trying to sort out and "rebuild" the
original rolls of film.
There is quite a great variety of transparency films: In the fifties mostly
Agfacolor of different types, but also Kodachromes, Ektachromes, Ilford,
Anscocolor, Adoxcolor, Perutz etc. and later also Fuji as well as others.
Some of them have retained beautiful vivid colors and quality while others
haven't fared that good, exhibiting severe discolorings, as well as real
physical abuse of different kinds in some instances.

Happy holidays to you too.

Thanks,
Lasse

Hi George,

That's a good idea. In fact it is such a good idea that I already thought
about it. :)
Though I haven't decided yet exactly how I will go about doing it.

I will definitely put up a few pictures and inroduce this "find" on my local
blog. Maybe link it to another web gallery, asking people to help out
identifying buildings, places and people.
Or I may approach the local news papers as well. Giving a few samples and a
link.

Or/and contacting the local muséum, which at times has arranged exhibitions
of old photographs asking visitors to help identifying places and people.
People around here seem to enjoy doing that. (I'd say that the Alanders are
particularly fond of caring about their past in such a way, because they
will likely find old relatives and places they have a relation to in one way
or another in the pictures.)

Thanks,
Lasse

Hum, we seem to have plenty of Coyotes around here.
The Geese thrive, whilst local cats and little dogs live in fear.

Neither have PR departments and advertising companies.

I recall seeing old ads from the 1930s advertising gramophones - the
ones that played acetate records through acoustic horns - claiming
they sounded so close to real life one would have trouble
distinguishing the two. Look at the RCA Victor symbol, the dog (was
his name Topper?) hearing "his master's voice" from the gramophone
which was obviously so near reality even with his keen hearing Topper
couldn't tell.

Whatever the current technology is will always be touted as "near
perfect" - when it never is.
