Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-18 Thread Thibouille
a little feature which *might* be usefull to some so I will write
about it again:
Metz offers (with 58AF1 only, the 48AF1 has no embedded sensor) auto flash.
Metz auto flash works "automaticaly" which means it reads
aperture/iso/focal etc settings from the camera.

It means you can use auto flash as easily as PTTL but.. without PTTL.
Usefull if you don't like PTTL or if you need to cure problems as:

* reflections (mirrors etc with which PTTL sucks)
* poeple closing their eyes due to the early metering flash from PTTL.

This feature will of course work as well with older camera (Z/PZ, MZ,
SF, *ist, DSLRs etc.)
It also feature HSS, wireless etc... of crouse.

U, no.
Without the larger image circle available, the shifting can not happen.
The 28/3.5 allows for 11mm of shift.
Presuming this is 11mm off each axis, it has to have 74mm of good image circle
to to this, 63mm
if the lens only shifts horizontally (I don't know if it has vertical shift).
Contrast this to a lens that only needs to cover the 35mm frame at 43mm of good
image circle.

While that's true for a normal lens, it isn't necessarily so for a
shift lens - it gets the increased image circle by means of the shift.

Under any other circumstances I would agree. However, the Megan is 5,

wanted - smartmedia cards

2008-05-18 Thread Scott Loveless
Hey, gang!

Our very first digital camera, a 1.3 megapixel Fuji, which we loaned out
a few years ago, came back to us today. We're going to give it to the
Megan. Unfortunately, the thing takes SmartMedia cards and we only have
one. Anybody have one or two they can part with?

Thanks!

Thanks, guys. I'll change the image text to show the name.

BTW - if anyone ends up with only a blank page (and with
"View Source" showing an iframe pointing to some website

Fortunately it appears that the hacker wasn't quite good

the security of anyone viewing the page.

Amazing actually.

With a perspective shift lens you're using a larger-image-circle lens
and those generally (though not always) have lower resolution than
standard 35mm lenses. And by using the shift capability you are, by
definition, using more of the edge of the image circle, which is
virtually always lower resolution than the center.

This is all hypothetical, though: I've long wanted to do a side-by-side
test of the 28mm shift lens compared to the 31mm Limited, correcting the
perspective distortion in Photoshop for the 31 Ltd. It would be
interesting to see what differences, if any, showed up in large prints.
Anyone got a 28mm Shift to bring to GFM? :)

Re: GESO: Glass blower

2008-05-18 Thread David J Brooks
Bob.

Great set of photos.

This brings back some good memories.,

I visited a park, i forget the name, in Sweden in 1976, and they had
glass blowers working as they would have 2-300 years ago,

I was so intriged, i went and watched them every day for two weeks,

I found a College in Mississauga that had, and i think still does
have, a night class in glass blowing.

I took the glass, and it was the most fun i had over a 10 week period
i have ever had.

I still have all 10 pieces i made.

Thanks again Bob

Dave

Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-18 Thread P. J. Alling
It depends on what you want to do with it surely. As long as it has a
low enough trigger voltage, (and IIRC the K10 and K20 both have built in
voltage limiters). So most any flash will be right and work with them.
If you want full automation that's a different question. (Just being a
wise ass, move along now).

Wel, the D300 is something of a class-breaker, offering performance
that exceeds the last-generation pro bodies (1DmIIN and D2Xs) for
about what an *istD sold for when new. But it would be cool if Pentax
brought out a K2D with most of the D300's features (I don't expect the
8fps, wicked fast AF or 2000+ shots per charge part, but the build
quality, viewfinder and controls are eminently doable for Pentax)

You could take a D300 and beat a K20 to death with it, and then use the D300 to
take pictures of
the kill.
Pentax really needs to make a body in it's class.
It would be nice to have a body that matches the quality of the lenses.

Re: depressed

2008-05-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
That Nikon is a good camera. Much faster write speed than the *istD,
although probably not as well built. Of course, you have Pentax
lenses, so I guess you're just going to have to get your own camera.
K10Ds are becoming quite inexpensive, and they're great cameras.

Why would you be depressed?

Well the C: drive is indeed unpleasant hmmm eventuality. But really,
if you have both Pentax and Nikon (no, I am not afraid to spell it
out) in your household, it means you can actually choose and compare
and enjoy both worlds. So that sans your computer issue, I think you
may even have some reasons to feel happy.

Cheers!

Re: Lilac

2008-05-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Bill. Yes, it's the DA* 50-135.
It is similar to some of Bruce's work. Although I must point out that
I've been shooting flowers at wide aps and distant backgrounds for a
couple of decades. It's a very nice technique that's easy to master.

Yer kinda channeling Bruce Dayton with this one. It's a lovely shot.
I missed which lens it was shot with, but it seems to have very smooth
rendering.
Was that the 50-135?

Re: wHICH fLASH UNIT FOR K10D OR K20D

2008-05-18 Thread jens
THANKS PAUL.
I know Pentax makes great quality flash units. I used to have the old AF
500 FTZ which is built like a tank and beautifully designed. Unfortunately
this is a ttl only unit. I'm supprised to hera about problems with the$
locking mechanism.

The Metz 58-1 costs appr. 40 USD less than the AF 540FGZ , but less
powerfull (only GN 42). In Germany the Metz is 280 Euro, the Pentax is 320
USD.
