Yeah, well, being a geek, I usually don't agree with such as that. :-)

I think that is the drive letter.
We Windows users get them as a free bonus so that if we don't name our drives,
we can still

Well, that sounds like a buggered flash.
Out of curiosity, do you have a relationship with a camera store that could
help you pin down
the problem?
Perhaps trying your flash on a different camera? A different flash on your

Windows does do the same thing, as the Mac doesn't actually mount
anything until you've run Disk Utility to format and name the drive.

Make sure it's firmly seated in the flash shoe. Make sure the locking pin is
still intact. Make sure the slider siwtch that gives you high speed synch and
trailing shutter synch is in the far left position. Try a new set of batteries.
If one of your set has begun to fail, it will cause havoc.

That's all I can think of at the moment. My 540 outperformed my Sigma Super by
a wide margin with far better exposure accuracy. If you continue to have
trouble, send it in for repair.

AF 540fgz problems (technology hates me)

2008-06-24 Thread Charles Robinson
I've started having wild overexposure problems with my AF540FGz and
K10D.

At first I figured it was dirty contacts - cleaned everything.

Then I thought low batteries - charged them.

Same problem.

It seems to works almost flawlessly in the "A" exposure mode. But not
in P-TTL.

The Sigma EF-500 DG Super works like a charm on the same camera in
just about any mode - with a few exposure problems no different from
what I've had when using the past 3 years on my ist-DS.

Then I figured out what the problem is (but not how to fix it): I'm
not getting much of a pre-flash. Sometimes the flash doesn't go of AT
ALL but I get a teeny-tiny little blip of light out of the flash.
Basically.. the pre-flash is so pathetically non-flashlike that the
K10D or whatever it's attached to go "oh, I didn't get much light
reflected back, I'd better crank up the output!" and the 540 is going
for it for all it is worth.

So WTF? What the hell would cause it to pre-flash so low as to be non-
existent? And is there anything I can try.. short of sending it
in for service along with the 16-50 I just sent in today?

I'm so frustrated and sad at the same time. Oh - and angry! Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Mac OS X utility program, Disk Utility, will by default do the
correct thing for 99% of configuration cases (format than setup the
drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system volume with a single
partition, Apple_HFS partition type on an Apple_partition_scheme) and
mount it in accordance with the UNIX disk identifier and mount point
schema.

In other words, there's nothing much to do other than fit the drive,
start the system, and let Disk Utility do its job.

As always, Ralf, beautiful. I'm not sure if those clouds over on the
left add to or detract from the image. I wonder if there also might be
a couple other shots this time of year. Say position one off to the
left of this shot and pointing toward the right of this one at the
tower, and, especially, one that's the reverse (position off to the
right of this shot, and shooting toward the left of this shot, also
making the tower primary, keeping the shooting position in the shadow
and shooting through the smoke ... ought to be able to see the "God
Rays" better, too).

Since you didn't have to mess with the first drive before installing it,
it's probably set up for Cable Select mode. Which means leaving the
second drive as it comes out of the box, which should be Cable Select
mode, should be fine. I don't know anything about Mac OS, though, so I
can't offer any advice on partitioning and formatting the thing. You
probably should go ahead and figure out where in the directory hierarchy
you want to mount the thing, though.

Re: OT: Configuring a second internal hard drive (mac g4)?

2008-06-24 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Should be simple.

The PowerMac G4 1.25 Ghz should have both Ultra ATA/66 and Ultra ATA/
100 busses with IDE drives configured for cable select, at which
point it's a simple matter to fit the drive, power up the system,
format and partition the new drive. Here's a document on physically
installing the drive:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1815

And a couple of articles on differentiating the Power Mac G4 models:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739

The earlier models with Ultra ATA/66 only presented some difficulties
with today's drives as Ultra ATA/66 could only format a drive up to a
volume sized at 128 Gbytes (no matter what the physical capacity of
the drive), but you should not have any difficulties with your system.

With a PC, all you need to do is install the drive, restart the machine, go to
the disk
management section of the computer management, and initialize the drive. The
computer assigns a
drive letter, does a format and your good to go.
You should be able to leave the jumper on cable select, since it isn't going
onto the same plug
as the C drive
Windows machines need to format new drives before they can be used
I would expect that it would be similar on a MAC, though it might be easier as
well.

Re: LBA vintage T-Novoflexar 400/5.6

2008-06-24 Thread Toine
I remember myself as a teenager looking in the brochures with great
envy. In the last years I have collected all the novoflexars (400mm
600mm 560mm Telyt) just for fun (they can be found for very little
money), The T was missing in my collection. The standard 400 and 600
novoflexars are nice not great, the telyt and T are much better. A
small modification on the pigriff and the Telyt and T are 100% usable
on digital including SR.

They look sharp, (at least as well as can be judged from web sized
scans), pretty much what I'd expect from the predecessor of the SMC T
135 f2.5 and SMC P 135 f2.5. The exposure seems to be alright but the
images are bit higher contrast than I'd like for showing just what the
lens is capable of.

That price sounds like a bargain to me. I was quoted £160 for a lenscap/hood a
long time ago.

KA adaptors are notoriously variable in quality.

On the issue of blown highlights!: A collection of the responses for easy printout for anyone interested--especially those just starting out like me

2008-06-24 Thread Christine Aguila
Excellent advice for those starting out like me. Here it is for easy
printout! Cheers, Christine

Paul S:

I think that for street photography, the matrix metering of the K10D will
work quite well most of the time. You could spot meter a tone that's close
to grey card reflectivity (green grass works well as do dirty sidewalks:-),
but locking in a meter reading only works if the light is constant.
Frequently, when shooting on the street, you'll get a mix of light that may
vary depending on which way you aim the camera.

The matrix meter tends to expose for the highlights. I find I frequently
have to bump up the midrange and sometimes the shadows as well, while the
highlights are usually close to right on.

In terms of visualizing, I think you're doing very well. I guess the only
recommendation I might make is to develop a certain midset. Don't look for
something to shoot. Look for a great picture, regardless of the subject.

Bob W:

Rather than trying to recognise mid-tones (which you will eventually
be able to do quite easily), you might want to try incident metering
and manual exposure. In situations such as you describe, when I know
the meter is going to go haywire, I tend to switch to manual. Now with
a digital camera it's also convenient to check the histogram to get an
idea of where everything is, and to adjust exposure accordingly if you
want to shift everything further to the right.

Some useful common midtones are pavements, grass, brick walls,
slightly faded denim, blue sky, rhino skin, bits of pigeon,
rainclouds.

I have quite a useful book called The Perfect Exposure by Jim
Zuckerman. Mostly he just tells you to use an incident meter, but
there is a chapter in which he shows a number of colour photographs
and points out what he used as the middle tone. You might be able to
find a copy in your library.

William Robb

This is, I think, the best metering strategy.
Meter the brightest area of the scene that you want to hold detail and set
it to Zone VIII
(meter it and open up 3 stops) The shadows will fall where they fall, but
usually they will fall
within the range of the sensor.
I spent years trying to meter for the shadows before I read in a Zone VI
newsletter about Fred
Picker's method. He said that rying to find the deepest shadow in a scene
can be frustratingly
difficult, but findong the brightest point is relatively easy. Now he was a
landscape guy, not a
gentrified street photographer, so for him, the brightest part of the scene
was usually clouds.
I would think that on the street, the brightest parts of the scene will be
building walls and
the like.
Just remember that specular reflections are going to be blown out no matter
what you do, so
ignore them for metering.

JOC

with digital, frames are almost free, bracket on 1/2 stop critical

Digital camera exposure is different from film exposure because the
characteristic behavior of a digital sensor is fundamentally
different from film.

- Highlight values run into the hard wall of sensor saturation when
the sensor runs out of numbers to quantize the incoming energy
level ... there's no "shoulder" or slope involved, when the energy
level received by a photosite in a 12bit sensor hits the integer 4095
after going through the A->D converter, there is no more energy it
can report and it simply gives the maximum value.

- The minimum exposure threshold boundary is soft: it's a matter of
the actual analog DR of the sensor vs how much noise you find
acceptable to set where you put the black point. Compared to film,
it's a much "softer" slope because you can determine from frame to
frame what you feel is important.

That said, on average, correct exposure for both tends to be fairly
close, what you need to be conscious of is the sensor's dynamic range
given whether you are capturing in RAW vs JPEG mode, and at what ISO
sensitivity setting.

I measured the K10D's DR with my standard test (which has built into
it various of my assumptions about what I consider a useable black
point signal/noise ratio...) and found that it provides in RAW
capture mode a range of 11 to 9 stops working range from ISO 100 to
1600. Yes, DR decreases as ISO increases and there's not much you can
do about it.

For this reason, the methodology I find most useful sith digital
capture, considering Zone System, is to meter for the Zone IX
highlights, not the Zone V midtones, and to consider what are the
important highlights with the sensor's dynamic range in mind. O

Re: On the issue of blown highlights!

Hi Bruce: Your mention of slides prompted me to go through a big box of
slides that I shot over 20 years ago with the Pentax MX--slides of a
girlfriend trip to Cancun & Florida--among other stuff. I haven't looked at
these slides for years--barely recognize myself! Anyway, yes, biasing away
from Highlights--yes, very key. I can see in the slides I've got some
bikini-clad girlfriends on the beach with some suntan lotion blown
highlights--made me giggle. Anyway, thanks for the comments & advice.
Cheers, Christine

Well that sucks. There's an info link on that page. Looks like the
problem stems from a non-standard javascript library and the Firefox
developers refusing to support it. Bad situation.

FWIW, those petal were white to begin with. The only real color was a
tiny bit of green in the center. But I know what you mean about the
mental block. B&W foliage has become a bit of cliche the last few

it seems that everyone and their brother is trying something similar

You know, that's a lovely composition, but I have a mental block about
nature shots, in particular botanicals, in B&W. I think it's probably
a failing in myself rather than in photographers' culture. I just
can't understand why you'd capture a flower and then take its colour
away. Lots of people do, so I'm clearly in a minority here. Oh well.

It appears to be a dogwood.
Nice composition. I might try cloning out all the background petals here and
just leave the two blooms. Could be cool.

Re: Success!

2008-06-24 Thread pnstenquist
I first shot the poppy on manual exposure because I was using the Vivitar
Series 1 macro, an ancient but excellent 90/2.5 without any electrical
connects. I merely set the stop, aimed at some green grass and pushed the
button. However, I used the lightsphere and 540 flash for this shot. Since
flash PTTL doesn't work with manual lenses (you get a full power flash), I just
started at a guesstimated f11/ 1/125th. I think I ended up shooting it at f8,
1/180th. (I bumped the shutter speed up to cut down on ambient exposure and
darken the background grass a bit more.)

Very nice, Frank. I like the reflections--as a general rule, reflections in
windows don't bother me. I do, however, wish transit authorities here and
abroad would wash the windows of the trains more often :-) I was taking
some shots on the EL the other day & I've got some very nice sharp dirty
window streak lines in the frames. Ugh. Anyway, another very nice train

You should be able to leave the drive jumpers in the "cable select"
position and have it work. That has worked for my G4 here at work, and
my G5 at home.

Peso African Violet

2008-06-24 Thread David J Brooks
One from the DA F 2.8 and K10D retest.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/djbrooks/2607967592/

Hand held at f3.2 and SR on.

The focal point is the second yellow pistol?? from the right. Most of
these are on the same plain
and all look well focused.

I did not do this test with a tripod, but wanted to see what real
field shots would be like.

I think its ok now.
