Re: PESO -- Fireworks NY 2008 I
I don't understand your workflow well enough. It doesn't help that you are using antediluvian versions of software to do your work. A lot has happened in image processing over the past five years since Photoshop 7 was current. RSE is also more than two and a half years out of date. When capturing in RAW format, color space and color temperature settings, in fact all image processing settings, on the camera mean nothing. They're set in the RAW converter. The only camera settings that affect the RAW file, other than to establish a default for the RAW processor to start with, are ISO, time, lens opening, NR on or off, and focus. Is your output 16bit or 8bit TIFF? Photoshop 7 is quite restrictive in terms of what can be done in [EMAIL PROTECTED] operations. ProPhoto RGB really requires [EMAIL PROTECTED] pixels to be used effectively, in order to characterize all the possible colors of ProPhoto RGB, and it was released after Photoshop 7 too, I believe. If you are outputting 8bit TIFFs, use Adobe RGB colorspace in the RAW converter. It will net more consistent results. Beyond that, I don't know RSE nor do I remember the foibles of Photoshop 7 well enough to debug the problem. Godfrey On Jul 9, 2008, at 5:03 PM, P. J. PESO: Window Boxes 2
Another set of window boxes, shot from our hotel room near Wiesbaden, near dusk. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7528836 K10D, DA 50-200, ISO 560, f/ 5.6 @ 1/30, RAW via LR. For some reason, the camera really underexposed this shot; I applied a full stop of exposure compensation in Lightroom, and would have added more except that the shadows started to get a bit noisy. Re: PESO -- Fireworks NY 2008 I
I assumed that there was a problem with the color space, so I tried using the Adobe RGB color space that I had good results from couple of years ago. The *ist-Ds will only allow sRGB or Adobe RGB for recording purposes, and I have the *ist-Ds set for Adobe RGB, (now I'm not sure that makes any difference when shooting in RAW at this point). I opened the file in RSE, modified color balance, enhanced the shadow contrast, (so I had more or less nice black skys), double checked that everything looked like I expected and exported a TIFF. It automatically opened in Photoshop and it looked just like the image exported in ProPhoto color space... I do understand color space at least a bit. I know that ProPhoto haa a larger gamet why however does AdobeRGB->AdobeRGB->AdobeRGB end up losing colors, especially since I used that conversion method before with predictable results...In fact why does it give exactly the same results as AdobeRGB->ProPhoto->AdobeRGB. Based on the results I've seen from other conversions I've done it shouldn't. Re: Suggestion for Pentax Photo Gallery
I have submitted more than just those 53. 2 of my images were rejected the first time and now made it in and 3 of the 53 so far have made it in. My take on the peer voting is that I am just trying to weed it down for the final judges - not make the final judgement. Kind of like a Grand Jury - just indicating whether it is worth having a trial or not. The final jury is the judges - with a yes/no in the gallery. As such, I will vote yes probably more than I would if I were the final judge. -- Best regards, Bruce Wednesday, July 9, 2008, 12:14:42 PM, you wrote: JD> Must be 1 in 10 if you had submitted all 53. Re: PESO -- Fireworks NY 2008 I
There's no mystery to it other than that you need to understand colorspaces better. ProPhoto RGB describes a much larger color gamut than Adobe RGB or sRGB. If you have subtle colors in ProPhoto RGB and they disappear when you convert to sRGB or Adobe RGB, they've been clipped as they cannot be represented in the target colorspace. Once clipped, they cannot be recovered by converting back to the larger colorspace ... the data has been lost, you need to go to the original file to retrieve them. You might try different rendering intents ... Relative Colorimetric basically moves all 'out of bound' colors to the limits of a particular colorspace where Perceptual attempts to translate all colors into the target colorspace as best can be arranged. Here's a way to see what's going on: convert a RAW file to a [EMAIL PROTECTED], ProPhoto RGB file and open it in Photoshop. Have the Histogram palette open, full RGB display. Then convert the colors to the Adobe RGB profile with Relative Colorimetic intent ... toggle the action with the "undo" command a couple of times and watch the histograms. You'll see where the clipping is. Do the same with the Perceptual intent. Once you see where the clipping is, go back to the ProPhoto RGB rendering and adjust the color rendering to move values in those areas back into the "safe" zone. Then you can convert to a smaller profile with greater ease. (When you're working with a printer output profile, you can do the same thing using the proofing setup and even turn on gamut warning flags, but I don't recall that Photoshop 7 has these features. I have PS CS2.) Godfrey On Jul 9, 2008, at 11:18 AM, P. J. Alling wrote: > Raw Shooter Essentials, it's much better looking, without any > Photoshop > work before export as a TIKF. Re: PESO -- Fireworks NY 2008 I
Raw Shooter Essentials, it's much better looking, without any Photoshop work before export as a TIKF. I recently started using ProPhoto color space in my work flow which seems to give better results, if I remember to convert the profile in Photoshop before output, so I changed back to the Adobe RGB profile and it made no difference. The last set of fireworks I processed, some time ago looked exactly the same when imported into Photoshop after conversion. http://home.earthlink.net/~morephotos/fireworks/PESO_--_fireworks1a.html It's really quite annoying. Thanks Paul. Those Clematis poke through every year, and pretty much in the same spot, but i shoot them anyway.:-) We have the jays feed schedule down pretty good, so it gives me time to set up. PESO -- Fireworks NY 2008 I
I went with a friends to the 4th of July fireworks in NY this last week and in spite of the rain it was a very good time. I carried the Dx with an A 24 FA 43 and vacillated between a 55 f1.8 or 85 f2.0 and finally decided on the real telephoto. I didn't take a tripod, was really looking to do some crowd/people shooting but I shot quite a lot of the fireworks anyway. Some of them weren't half bad. Just a bit of carping, I noticed when I opened almost all the fireworks files into any raw converter I could get some very subtle colors in the actual fireworks. However when I loaded them into Photoshop (7.0) for final editing, when they were converted to the working color space many of those colors were lost. This image had much more vibrant blues and reds, which Photoshop just washed out. I tried a number of different color spaces in the raw converter including sRGB and every one did the same thing. Oh well, another damned mystery. http://home.earthlink.net/~morephotos/fireworks/PESO%20--%20fwny2008_01.html Equipment: Pentax *ist-Ds/smc Pentax M 85mm f2.0 As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored. -- You get further with a kind word and a gun, than with a kind word alone. --Al Capone. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Geso Some flowers and birds whilst sitting in the back yard
http://www.flickr.com/photos/djbrooks/sets/72157606071323461/ Did a little more shooting of Asian lilies, tiger lilies and bluejays in the back yard the last few days. Still having troubles with the red ones, but some red desaturation in LR and bump up the oranges a bit, seems to help. Anyway, hopefully a nice set of flowers etc to brighten up your day. K10D, some with DA F 50 and some with the Sigma 300 F4. Some LR cropping and saturation on a few. It's been many months since I last cast any votes at the gallery, so the situation may have changed. Back then, however, I noticed a certain variation over time in average image quality.
