Anthony,

Are you 100% certain it is the hard drive that is producing these
clicks? May be it is one of the fans?

I should also mention, that for the future, you'd consider portable
applications. My WinXP uses all together 2.1 Gb of space with the
programs that I cannot use in portable mode. The rest (few GB) are on
the other drive and they are portable, so that I can easily backup
them just as a bunch of files.

Just my cents...

Enjoyable gallery, George. Looks great in the slideshow view

I like the detail shot of the drive wheel but my favourite is probably
the front end view of engine 4023.

2008-07-20 Thread P. J. Alling
It's more or less a normal lens on the APS-C sensor cameras, (true
normal equivalent to the 43mm on film), and a relatively slow normal
lens at that. I currently carry an A 24mm f2.8 for a wide, 43 ltd.as a
longish normal and the M 85 f2 for a nice general telephoto as my
walking around kit. There really isn't a place in that lineup for the
30mm. Now if my widest rectilinear prime was a 20mm then I could
replace the 43mm with the 30mm or the 35mm f2.0..

2008-07-20 Thread John Coyle
I think we have a poltergeist, or maybe had one: a month or so ago, one
shelf of books in our bedroom was swept to the floor in the middle of the
night, waking us both. The shelf, which is simply resting on the brackets,
was still in place, but the books weren't!
My daughter-in-law swears our place is haunted, and occasionally I feel I've
seen movement out of the corner of my eye, but there is nothing/nobody
there.
BTW, our apartment is only thirty years old...

You could be sitting in the house, reading or what ever, then you
would hear this tremendous sound of smashing glass. At first i thought
it was the little deviates from the farm next door throwing rocks.
I would check every window inside and out, plus storms stored in the
basement, incase they fell over, but nothing ever found.

Many previous and post Brooks tenants told the same story.

No, first to the dealer, then to Pentax NL, on to Pentax Belgium, and on
on to Germany if they can't fix it. Labeling it 'professional use' and
calling a lot helps speeding things up a bit, but still looking at weeks

There is a good workshop here in town for Canon and Nikon (and willing to

The best image is always made when Windows is not running. And backing up
while Windows is running may cause a lot of extra drive activity (not nice
when it starts failing).

Here is another one, which will also run from a live CD (the Bart PE live

the drive. http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm

2008-07-20 Thread Bob W
I like the night safe shot - very good and atmospheric.

Not so sure about the ambulance shot, although perhaps I was confused
by you calling it 'ambo'. It took a while for me to realise you meant
ambulance - ambo is Latin for 'both' and is sometimes seen in English
place names, such as Huttons Ambo. It's also the name of a type of
mineral water (which tastes horrible, I prefer Babile which even
sounds bubbly) sold in Ethiopia.

I don't mind reinstalling programs, but I hate losing data.
In Outlook Express you can change the store directory to a different location
than the stock
one. I don't know if Outlook will allow this though.
I changed my store directory to my mirrored drive.
I also regulary back my bookmarks file and anything else I can think of that is
stored by
default on my C drive to my RAID1 drive.

Norton Ghost http://www.symantec.com/norton/ghost
Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/

There are probably others.

But, like Bill said, start copying your data files to another drive now.
Re-installing the O.S. and your apps after a drive failure is a pain in
the butt, but losing your data files really sucks.

I have two hard drives on my computer and one holds the O.S. *only*. And
I back it up with Norton Ghost once a week.

I keep my data mirrored on an external drive.

They are files containing the raw conversion data for Camera Raw or
Lightroom. When you set conversion parameters in ACR or Lightroom, the
actual raw file doesn't get changed, the conversion settings you
specified are just saved in a format called XMP (for Extensible Metadata
Platform). The DNG format was designed from the outset for this kind of
thing so the XMP data is saved within the DNG file (so you can never
lose or accidentally delete it). With all other raw formats, the XMP
data gets saved in a separate XMP "sidecar" file.

Definitely get the external drive and start backing it up now.

If you do need to shut it down, you may be able to recover the files
off of the drive by putting the drive into an external enclosure, and
putting the enclosure in the freezer. A USB cable will route out
through the freezer's door seal quite nicely. :-)

I'm not sure what cloning software exists for XP, though I bet someone

Matthew , I use the "arrange" thing a lot to organize the shots as if I

I'm not happy with how I've done my first page - Needs some work -

Re: XMP files

2008-07-20 Thread George Sinos
Walter - ACR doesn't actually modify your image data, it just stores
the series of commands needed to make the modifications.

Since Adobe designed the DNG file, it knows how to store those
instructions within the file without inadvertently destroying your
image. It doesn't know the exact format of the manufacturer's
proprietary raw files, so the instructions are stored in an XMP file
of the same name as the original image. As David says, these are
called "sidecar" files.

One more reason for me to convert everything to DNG.

Re: PESO: Morning (Revised)

2008-07-20 Thread ann sanfedele
I say yes to this version over the other... looks more real, which I
prefer to surreal.
One thing bothers me, though, the tree almost dead center ... I wish
it were more in fog like the others..
it is such a strong dark line it keeps pulling my eye to it... where as
everythng else is so lovely it kinda gets in the
way... in the manner of the telepone pole or tree coming out of the top
of someones head does...
without fudging too much, making it fainter would improve it ...

OT - Computer advice wanted.

2008-07-20 Thread Anthony Farr
My hard drive has the death clicks. Previously I had a couple of noisy
(clattery) startups but it has run quietly so I've just left it on full
time. Today the clicking has become almost constant. What do I need to do
or get (apart from a replacement HD) to "clone" or "ghost" the OS and
software over to another drive? I want to avoid a clean install because of
the enormous number of updates between the build version of XP that I have
on my backup discs, and SP3. I also want to avoid having to reinstall and
configure my other software.

Should I leave it on despite the clicks? I worry that if I shut down it
won't reboot. It's Win XP Home.

Anthony Farr

You could be sitting in the house, reading or what ever, then you
would hear this tremendous sound of smashing glass. At first i thought
it was the little deviates from the farm next door throwing rocks.
I would check every window inside and out, plus storms stored in the
basement, incase they fell over, but nothing ever found.

Many previous and post Brooks tenants told the same story.

like there was one window that a previous owner had painted shut, and

Power cables are usually a curse to cityscapes, but in this case I'd
say the pic would be far less interesting without them. I think you've
hit a nice balance all over. Nice pic. :-)

damselfly is nice and sharp enough to make it a keeper.

No fillflash. Yes the Sigma 500 :) It required two (free) firmware
upgrades by Sigma to make it work on the K10D. After that the flash
tube died. I used a very cheap minolta version of the sigma as a flash
tube donor and now it's working ok.

I'm no expert on the xmp files, but they call them sidecar files and
have the information stored on your photo settings, like what you did
in your adjustments.
IIRC the file will be over written if you do more edits.

I lost a very nice IR shot, that i could not duplicate in PS, but
could of had i known about the xmp files earlier.

Re: OT I think George has found a home.

2008-07-20 Thread Christine Aguila
Fun story, Dave. My parents still live in the house I grew up in, located
in Albany Park, a neighborhood on the near north-west side of Chicago.
Their stucco bungalow has a ghost as well. We used to hear a lot of
furniture moving upstairs when we were all downstairs. Once it was so bad,
my mother shouted up the stairs, "Look here, ghosts. If you want to stay
here, you'll have to keep the noise down." That subdued them for a good
long while. Not much heard from them since. Glad you're happy George is
back--will probably make for some fun mischief in the near future. Cheers,
Christine

That fence was hastily erected due to coastal erosion caused by winter storms.

Mark, you have some specular highlights showing in that picture, and what is
obviously a veiling
flare top left.
The double image almost looks like a soft focus effect that can be had by doing
a double
exposure where you do one shot in focus and then another one somewhat out of
focus (long focus).
I've seen that with accessory lenses. The wide aperture definitely contributed
to the effect by
using more of the accessory lens to make the pucture.

OT I think George has found a home.

2008-07-20 Thread David J Brooks
I'll make this as brief as i can, but i thought I'd share this.

I have been riding my bike out to the old farm house this past week,
as i still feel for our old ghost George, and wonder how he's doing
all by him self.
Two things have happened around the Brooks homestead this week, after
the rides.

#1-I had been looking for about three years, off and on, for two Savoy
Brown CD's from a best of collection I have. I have the case, but have
spent hours, as i say off and on, looking for the Cds them selves. I
had given up on finding them an had started a store search for a new
copy.
Thursday, Lucy jumps up on the dresser, we have the small TV on in the
bedroom, and something fell on the floor. It was the CD case. I
wondered why it was up here, as it has been kept by the stereo for
many years.
As a joke, i opened up the case, and what do i see. The two missing
CD's are in the case. I asked Erin and Liz if they brought thi sup and
found the CD's. They did not even know what a Savoy Brown was, let
alone a case was in the house.:-)

#2- I was making Catfish for supper on Thursday, and i had put the oil
and spices on the fish, and was ready to wrap the foil around it, when
i realized i had forgot to put some pepper on it.
I looked for about 15 minutes for the shaker. I finally found a small
packet from a take out store and used that.
Took the fish out to the BBQ and came back in. What do i then see,
right next to were i was preparing supper.
Yup, the regular pepper shaker.

That convinced me George had hooked a ride with me back to the
house. He'd been there all by him self for about a year and a half now.
This is the kind of stuff, and making rocks through window noises that
he specialized in.:-)

I'm glad he's back, we'll keep him in line like we did before.

Some of you may remember my George stories, for those that don't, he
was our haunted resident of the 150 year old farm house Liz and i had
rented for a number of years.
Hid stuff, made glass shattering noises, sang, banged on doors among
other things. I have met up with people that had rented before and
after us, and we all had the same stories and noises.

I believe. There are old house noises and there are spirit noises.

We have the latter.

Thanks for everyone who commented on this shot and hypothesized on the
effects shown. I don't think the flare speculation works: There was no
direct light on the lens or even the subject - it was really soft,
indirect lighting. One thing I noticed after looking at my shots taken
with the same equipment that don't show this effect is that they were
all taken at much smaller apertures. This shot was taken at f/4.0, which
is only one stop down from wide open with this lens, so I'm pretty sure
the wide aperture contributed to the effect.

Whatever. I'm going to make a mental note of it to keep in my bag of
