Lightroom question

2008-07-29 Thread Mark Roberts
All right, this has been driving me bonkers and I can't find an answer...

How do I change the default sort order in Lightroom? Every time I import
a directory of files it sorts the images by capture time and I have to
*manually* change it to sort by file name. What's worse is when I'm in a
hurry and forget to do this there doesn't seem to be a way to change
groups of directories in one go: I've just spent half an hour going
through previously imported directories and correcting the sort order
manually - one at a time. It's infuriating and I know there has to be an
easier way.

That's the premise with all photography. Slide film is a onestopshop, so you
can see what you have at the first process. If you wish to take it further,
the option is available to you. Positive photography has numerous advantages
over other processes. As do they over it.

In fact, if you think about it for a moment, it's the old way of doing
things back in the film era that was absurd: You had to get prints made
before you could decide which of your shots were worth printing! Sheer
madness, but it seemed to all of us (I think) a reasonable state of
affairs at the time -- mostly because there was no alternative at the
  time, I suppose.

The printing industry uses the same model as slide film.
If you shot it, you got it.

 William Robb

That's the premise with all photography. Slide film is a onestopshop, so you
can see what you have at the first process. If you wish to take it further,
the option is available to you. Positive photography has numerous advantages
over other processes. As do they over it.

Agreed. It was a good alternative (well, E6 was) and it was, in fact,

Interestingly, it took digital technology (scanning) to allow minilabs to print

printing in mind,

Unsurprisingly, there have been a lot of complaints about these issues,

I'm quite surprised by that. OK, there should be a way to change the
default sort order on import, but until your post I had no idea there
wasn't - I've felt no need for anything other than what it does. I do
sort collections, but that's after import, and I can't think why I
would want to sort all collections in the same way - I definitely want
to be in control of the order they show in, and a 'sort all' feature
could leave to some very blue language.

would want to sort all collections in the same way - I definitely want
to be in control of the order they show in, and a 'sort all' feature
could leave to some very blue language.

I'm not talking about a sort all feature. I meant the ability to
manually select *specific* directories and then apply a sort to just
these selected directories with one action. Hardly something one could
do by accident (and in fact it's something I'd never do at all if I were
allowed to have all imports have my own preferred sort order by default).

I'm quite surprised by that. OK, there should be a way to change the

sort collections, but that's after import, and I can't think why I

Stitching the Unstitchable

2008-07-29 Thread Doug Franklin
Howdy, folks,

At a recent race, I got several sequences of shots with reasonable
(~30%) overlap. It occurred to me that they might look interesting if
pasted together into a temporal panorama. Is this something that
conventional stitching software might be able to do, or am I going to
have to bite the bullet and do it manually? These sequences were shot
on a K10D, either handheld with a 200 or 300 mm lens or on a monopod
with a 400, and, obviously, panning. I'm guessing that setting up the
registration might be an issue for the common stitching software.

RE: PESO - The Grand

2008-07-29 Thread Anthony Farr
The unfortunate side effect of cropping the amp stack will be either losing
the background Hindu head if you want to keep a rectangular format or
squaring up the format if you want to save the background (cropping just the
right edge leaves the image unbalanced, and you'd need to crop a little from
the left to compensate). I don't think this shot is served by a squarer
format, which tends to be more serene and out of character with the
excitement of the performance.

Or you could keep the format intact and clone out the amps, if you're
feeling clever.

PESO: Near the Reichstag

In Berlin, near the Reichstag, stand two beautiful modern office buildings, for

As noted in a previous post, the building here stands in the former killing

memorialize the seven young men who died trying to swim across the canal to

As a child of the 60's, I find the reunification of Germany, and the creation

Thanks, Charles!

I had never been in Berlin before. My wife was last there in January 1982, to
do research for her PhD dissertation in history in the archive in East Berlin.
She had to stay in the west, and every day took the UBahn through the
checkpoints and past the submachine gun-toting guards twice a day. She only
had to stay two weeks, though. She was amazed on this recent trip.

Newbie - Quest about batteries

2008-07-29 Thread John E. Brandt
Greetings,

I just joined this list and wonder if anyone knows where one can acquire a
battery/batteries for a vintage Spotmatic. I just purchased the camera on
eBay and it came without a battery. So I don't even know where to start. My
local camera store told me they are very hard to find. Not sure what the
number is or anything.

Suggestions welcome.

The original 1.3 volt mercury batteries for the Spotmatic series are no
longer available but suitable replacements are available.

Energizer 394 and Varta V400PX both fit - there are probably others.
These are silver oxide and are rated at 1.5 volts but the higher voltage
isn't an issue with the Spotmatics.

You might consider joining the Yahoo Spotmatic Group. They have a
document on batteries in their Files section.

RE: Newbie - Quest about batteries

2008-07-29 Thread John Poirier
Hi. Welcome. I'm usually a lurker, but I help you with this one. I use
Spotmatics a lot. I'll assume that you have an original Spotmatic, not a
Spotmatic F. (Spotmatic F are clearly marked Spotmatic F on the top plate.)

The original Spotmatic battery was the VX400, a mercury battery that was
discontinued 5 or 10 years ago for environmental reasons.

The most common replacement is made by a company called Wein, and is a
modified hearing aid battery. They show up regularly on EBay and can be
ordered from most major camera shops online. The work but don't last very
long.

A better bet is the S400PX, a silver oxide battery. It's pretty hard to
find, but I was able to special order some via the Canadian Radio Shack
equivalent recently.

There are a number of workarounds involving adaptations of silver oxide
button cells. For information on those, you should check out the Yahoo
Spotmatic group.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Spotmatic/

There's good info in that group's Files section. It's a good group,
although not particularly active these days.

Cheers

Re: Newbie - Quest about batteries

2008-07-29 Thread P. J. Alling
The original batteries were a mercury cell of 1.35 volts. Due to the
design of the Pentax meters you can probably get a silver oxide s625px
or alkaline lr9/px625a battery which should give accurate meter readings
in spite of the difference in voltages. The only operational difference
I've noticed is that the Mercury batteries last nearly forever.

Hi, Brian
Interesting that the Varta V400 PX is now available in silver oxide. I
still have a stash of the same number, bought about 5 years ago, but they
are mercury.

I should correct myself on the original number. I think it was PX400.

RE: Newbie - Quest about batteries

2008-07-29 Thread Brian Walters
Actually I might have made an error with this. I picked up a battery
for the Spotmatic a year or so ago at a local camera shop and I assumed
it was the Varta. But, thinking back, it was probably the Energizer.
The Varta came in a Spotmatic I bought recently and it's probably a
mercury battery.
