Mark,

just want to know what your experience with the pressure altimeter
with the Explorist 300 was like. i have the garmin vista hcx which
also has a barometric altimeter and during my recent ride, there was
always a fairly huge difference between what the gps device showed and
the 'official' altitude of the places. anything between 100 and 500 ft
difference. there was one particular instance where it went haywire.
we were at the top of a pass called Changla and officially it's
altitude is 17,800 ft. but the gps was showing something like
20,000-odd ft...

is this kind of normal behaviour? perhaps it is meant as a purely rough guide?

All of those things are at PDML Central at GFM. Except women
yearning. I was looking for them, but couldn't find any. They must
have been over at PDML West with Cesar and Cory.

And an enchanting creature she is!

You'd think her parents would have been more careful, though. Naming
her Lola Love, what else would she become but a stripper (sorry:
"exotic dancer")?

Perhaps they should have named her Albertina or Phyllis. She'd have
had a chance at a more mainstream career that way...

we have. We're all far more mature as photographers than that.
Inspired by Roman's recent posting I'd like to suggest the following:

Plague
Famine

The antichrist
Dressage

Women yearning

Very, very good - a classic in its own right.

On the subject of horses, have you seen how well the Olympic dressage
was received in Honkers?

"One of them told the city's Sunday Morning Post newspaper she was
'deeply bored.' 'The horses just walked from one side of the arena to
the other and then back again,' she said.

'I thought they were just going through the warm-up exercises but the
commentators said the round was over ... I really don't think Hong
Kong people will be interested in this.'

As the stands emptied, another spectator said: 'I expected to see
horse racing. I have to say this is the most boring thing I've ever
seen in my life.'"

RE: Translation assistance? (was Re: Park open, no trespassing... (any bizarre signs you seen?))

2008-08-21 Thread Bob W
I would translate it as follows:

"I haven't been doing photography very long, but my interest has
become intense, thanks to a friend who got me so passionately
involved. I have enjoyed photography for a long time, but never before
with such intensity as now.

One of my favourite subjects is night photography, but I am always
open to other styles."

It's not a literal translation, but it is natural English (although an
English person would play down the intensity and passion!).

I got as prependicular as I could observe, to the plane of the web, (the web
was probably no more than three inches from top to bottom), shot numerous
frames of this, but there was a slight breeze & then there was my aching
back (I left my refconvertor A @ home!). This is not an excuse but just

Thanks, Ken, I'll pass on your kind words.

Indeed, the shutter lag ( which can be several seconds by the time the
very slow autofocus locks - and the only focus-point is dead-centre)
and the horrendous LCD viewing screen (no proper viewfinder) make her
p&s camera almost useless catching action. She finds that very
frustrating.

BTW, I showed Judy your swan pic from a week or two ago, and she
really liked it!

cheers,

All I have to offer is the Olympic National forest, the Cascade

Baker. No room in my apartment for a party, so it's either great
Mexican or Asian food close by. But anyone of you is welcome to visit

there on 1st Avenue South, across from Starbucks Headquarters. The
Mountaineers Club has occasional treks for the photogs.

Damn, I've got to get out of the dog park and out there, don't I?
Sitting home testing my AF may just be a waste of time!

Chemical/Silver sepia toned prints will have a mixture of black, (the
darkest shades), and "brown". Yet they are still considered B&W err.

their jackets. Looks like it was very well handled.

Sounds like it was a tough assignment. That's a very sensitive and
moving photograph. My late father often told me that a parent's
worst nightmare is to be predeceased by their child. As a parent
myself, I have to agree with him.

I can't imagine the anguish this lady went through. You've captured
some of that in your photo.

Yes, and it's not the beer, it's from being kept awake all night long
by those damned chainsaws. They're so loud it sounds like they're

Re: PESO - "Spun in Seney"

2008-08-21 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Ken,

First - marvelous shot. The contrast between the smooth background
and the web and support columns is great. The exposure and
composition are wonderful.

One minor nit - the focus on the web seems to indicate that you were
not parallel to the plane of the web. The lower right starts to
defocus just enough for me to see. It makes me want to blink or
squint just a little.

Even with that nit, it is a great picture. Thanks for sharing it
with us - you do wonderful work.

Peso The Classic

2008-08-21 Thread David J Brooks
Over the course of the year, a few of the Trillium shows put on a
"Classic" at the end of the day, for some of the
main core riders.

Its a tougher course, and you have two judges, which combine scores
for a percent. The top 50% usually
return for a second round and the scores combined. In a normal Hunter
round you jump 8 fences. In the Classic's
up to 10 fence.

However, one of the show farms, did three Classic's this summer, the
old fashioned way.
Take part of the fence down, build a chute from ring 1 to ring 2, make
them ride up a grass hill and jump a ridged
log jump, both ways. This now involves 16 fences.

The good ol days.:-)

Winner takes all.

Saturday is pony day and they have two Classics on Friday's. One for
the adult riders at 3' fences, and one for the kids who ride small.

Re: Translation assistance? (was Re: Park open, no trespassing... (any bizarre signs you seen?))

2008-08-21 Thread Fernando
Here is my quick dirty translation:

"I started this hobby recently but I'm very passionate about it.
Thanks to a friend that introduced me to this hobby with intense
passion. Truth of the matter is I always liked photography but now I'm
more passionate about it.

I like night photography, but I'm not closed to other styles, which I
also practice."

[translator note: I believe that's the meaning, not the exact wording though]

Now if any English speaker wants to polish this that would be perfect ;-)

There are some words repeated in the original Spanish so he might want
to polish the Spanish first.
