1) We all know that Pentax has been integrated into Hoya. Pentax Imaging is
actually a division of Hoya Corporation.

See: http://www.hoya.co.jp/english/company/company_02_03.html

2) It is also quite evident that Tokina, Kenko and Slik are the same
company.

See: http://www.kenko-tokina.co.jp/

Then, it seems that there is a close close relationship between Tokina and
Hoya, which should remain different companies tough.
That does not prevent Tokina to be owned by Hoya. Heck, they even sell the
same product with the same name! See "Pro1 D" line of filters, available as
Kenko (brand used in Japan) and as Hoya (brand used worldwide).

Also, quoting from photography on the net
(http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=346581):

"THK Photo Products, Inc. is the U.S. distributor for Tokina Co., Ltd.
(Tokyo), one of the top manufacturers of converter lenses for the 35mm
single-lens reflex camera, for all products of the camera accessory
manufacturer, Kenko Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), camera filters of the worldly
prestigious brand of HOYA Corporation (Tokyo). and the most copied line of
tripods today.SLIK Corporation (Tokyo).

"Having Tokina Optical Corporation as its core, a successful merge with
Kenko Optics of America took place in June of 1993. As a consequence to the
merge, the company has been renamed to its present name of T (Tokina), H
(Hoya), K (Kenko) Photo Products, Inc.

"As we continue to commit to our current distribution of camera products, we
also strive to expand in the area of industrial equipment and mass media
optical products, further providing extensive services as the leading
optical products manufacturer in the world."

Some more hints:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=417883

At the end, I don't know who owns who, to which extent, etc, but all above
companies must be related.

Most of mine are 35mm.

Er, I meant digital-optimized 35mm lenses (like the D-FA macros).

All I know is, the DA lenses I own or have used perform immensely better
than older 35mm lenses on digital. I'm a BIG fan of the DA line, and would
not like to have to go back to 35mm-format lenses.

I know what you mean about the gentleman. I waited quite a while for
him to move on, but he didn't. So, I settled for a moment when he was
looking at the door in anticipation, waiting for whomever was inside
shopping. This was really all the facade there was; below what you
see in the photo is, IIRC, bare concrete or something else
unattractive and uninteresting.

I was uncertain about including the yellow awning and blue ice cream
case at the right; they add color and expand the scene a bit, but
they also distract somewhat from the main focus of the shot.

Thanks for your comments.

I don't see how a bunch of people walking around a nature preserver
area, already paved, is in danger from the state of NC. But then
again, i have no experience with the US Parks.

I could see the camping for the two weekends stopped, but maybe Crae
and family might keep that.

Based on the precedent established in the takeover of Chimney Rock and
it's inclusion into the Chimney Rock State Park, I don't think y'all got
anything to worry about.

The Morton family are forming a non-profit corporation to continue
operating the "developed" part of Grandfather Mountain - the mile high
bridge, animal habitats and other existing attractions - in the way it's
been operating for years.

This is mainly a deal to KEEP Grandfather Mountain the way it is. It
brings a lot of tourism dollars into NC, so why would the state want to
screw that up?.

All of the special programs at Grandfather Mountain, including the
photography weekends, mean a lot of money to NC; more than just the few
dollars you spend inside the park.

Such a camera was said to be in the works in an interview with one of
the higher-ups at Pentax last year. (It's on the web somewhere but I've
lost the URL). I was afraid it might be canceled but recent

Re: GFM sold

2008-09-29 Thread John Sessoms

From: AlunFoto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'll have to book my tickets around Christmas. Hope nothing changes
between then and June...

Still, I think it looks good from that article in the Charlotte
Observer. What with the Morton family still running the park and all.
Sounds like a deal to escape property taxes, if you ask me... :-)

Partly ... and perhaps partly it secures Hugh Morton's legacy.

The key for me is:

“Grandfather Mountain is protected for good, over and done, period,”
said the younger Morton, who is president of Grandfather Mountain Inc.
“That's the way it should be. Grandfather Mountain is too significant to
have any potential for anyone ever to ruin it.”

and

“There's a place for condos and carousels, but Grandfather Mountain is
not the place.”

I suspect they saw a future where rising land values and property taxes
could force them to have to sell out to developers, and they wanted to
get it into protected status while they could.

I think the old man would be right pleased.

It's the second private tourist attraction acquired by the State of NC
to preserve it from development. NC bought Chimney Rock last year.

http://web.eenorthcarolina.org/net/org/info.aspx?s=44880.0.0.37430

I expect that's the same way NC will manage Grandfather Mountain. The
Morton family will be contracted to continue to run the park through a
non-profit corporation.

"Similarly, Hoya aren?t planning to sell the lens-maker Tokina, which

This explains a lot.

But I remember, when Hoya bought Pentax, mentioning that Hoya already

Interesting bit of Trivia

2008-09-29 Thread John Sessoms

Y'all probably already knew this ... I may have forgotten it.

Reading an article on full-frame DSLRs today, and it said the *FIRST* FF
DSLR was Pentax's MZ-D 6MP prototype shown at Photokina and PMA in 2001.

First PRODUCTION FF DSLR was the Contax N Digital, using the same
Phillips CCD image chip.

Pentax canceled the project due to "cost", but the article suggested it
might have been due more to poor image quality that didn't meet Pentax's
standards.

Don't really mean nothin', but it IS Pentax related.

Sorta Semi OT: Grandfather Mountain

2008-09-29 Thread John Sessoms

The State of North Carolina purchased Grandfather
Mountain for $12 million dollars today.

The Morton family will continue to operate the nature center, wildlife
habitat and swinging bridge through a new nonprofit group, but 2600
acres of undeveloped land, along with a 600 acre conservation easement
will become a new state park.

http://www.newsobserver.com/print/sunday/city_state/story/1235214.html

The $12 million deal also gives the state a conservation easement on
the 600-acre park area, popular with visitors for its Mile High
Swinging Bridge, nature museum and animal habitat that includes the
mountain's beloved bears. The deal, to be announced Monday, is meant
to protect the land and its abundant wildlife and vegetation from
development.

That was a lifelong mission of Hugh Morton, who inherited the
mountain in 1952 and transformed the state's distinctive peak into a
leading tourist attraction while preserving its wild beauty. The
family will continue operating the park through a new nonprofit group
that could further enhance conservation efforts, his grandson, Crae
Morton, said Saturday.

"Grandfather Mountain is protected for good, over and done, period,"
said the younger Morton, who is president of Grandfather Mountain
Inc. "That's the way it should be. Grandfather Mountain is too
significant to have any potential for anyone ever to ruin it."

I'd have liked to see how Pentax envision the APS-C line evolving;

Re: GFM sold

I don't see how a bunch of people walking around a nature preserver
area, already paved, is in danger from the state of NC. But then
again, i have no experience with the US Parks.

I could see the camping for the two weekends stopped, but maybe Crae
and family might keep that.

Hi gang,

My trip this week-end was successful in many ways. A lot of keepers
has been registered on the SD cards, and it will take a good while to
sort them through. I also got to test a newly bought goose down
sleeping bag, and some really long-time exposures with the K20D. I
also landed myself in the lauch of this year's reindeer hunting
season, so I had to leave my antlers in the car .

When in the same area three years ago, I was very proud of myself to
have climbed a 1200 m asl. peak. Not much of a feat really, so I
challenged myself to climb another one this time. Not much taller, but
more than twice as far to walk. All the distance above the tree-line
gave spectacular views all round, and plenty of room for the thoughts
to wander, too. :-)

After riding one particular train of thought, I took this image. What say
you?

Your trip sounds a little athletic for me, but glad you found yourself well
equipped for all activities.
Difficult to determine scale of this scene and, therefore, what your options
might have been. Is the plain dry grass, dirt or (?).
Deep blue sky indicates you may have been a few thousand feet above sea level.
Contains nice earth colors, Jostein.

Re: PhotographyBlog: Pentax Interview, quite interesting (Samsung deal etc.)

2008-09-29 Thread Dario Bonazza
I may add that a Samsung manager said the following to the audience on
occasion of their press conference in Cologne:

1) The technical partnership with Pentax is going ahead. Samsung never
discussed the possibility to buy Pentax camera division from Hoya, and they
currently have no plan to do that.
2) Samsung is developing an intermediate product between compacts and DSLR's
(something more or less like the Panasonic G1), and it's going to be a
Samsung-only product, not a joint venture with Pentax.

That could change at any time...
NC is a state government, state web sites in most US states, unless

deal hasn't yet been consummated. I don't expect that it won't happen,

There has been a Hoya/tokina connection for years, not sure exactly what
it was, but in the early 80's there were a pair of matching series of
excellent Hoya HMC and Tokina RMC lenses that were obviously made by the
same mfgr, with just very slight trim differencesThese lenses are
excellent values as they don't Sell for much but have outstanding build
and optical qualityThe Hoyas Are far rarer, they may have been sold
only on the Japan market or something.

Re: OT PS question

2008-09-29 Thread David J Brooks
Thanks George, its filed info now.:-)

I think i mislead. The shots from all of my Nikons and the K10D look
sharp in PS, LR and Vueprint, my old on site editor.

Its just the D200 and action shots are soft, and a lot of sharpening
is needed, so much so it looks it.

The portrtrat stuff is ok, not 100%, but ok. I can work with them.

I did not know that about PS in its resizing, though.

Re: book maiking with BLURB - anyone try it?

2008-09-29 Thread Walter Hamler
Ann, I have had three books published through Blurb with several
reprints/reorders. The quality is excellent. One is a picture book
that I have had a lot of positive feedback on. The other two are
novels but have pics on front and back and inside of dust cover.
Again, lots of positive feedback.
I don't think they do calendars however.

Re: OT PS question

David -

There is a lot of info in the previous replies and I'm not sure what I
have to add helps, but this is on a slightly different topic. I'm
only bringing this up because you mentioned shots looking sharp in
other editors, but not looking sharp in photoshop.

In photoshop versions before CS4, the did not completely render the
image at every magnification. My memory is a little fuzzy, (no pun
intended) but sharpness can only be evaluated at 25, 50 and 100%
magnification. I don't have my documentation at hand, but it might be
worth checking out if that has something to do with your problem.

Other levels of zoom, like 33 or 66 percent aren't redrawn from the
original file contents, but redrawn from whatever may be held in
memory. I"m not sure about magnification above 100%.

Like I said, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your
problem, but it's possible.

Yes thats right. Same jump, same angle, same light etc.

I basically shot jpg at these events to:

1- Keep the files down on the computer.

2- Have not developed a raw to jpg quick conversion as to get the
photos up on line quickly. I have pscs on the mac ibook and pscs2 on
the PC, as well as LR and BBpro.

I am going to assume that 1 if not all will have some down and dirty
raw to jpg conversion then.

Looks like i need to shot raw for the D200 to get any type of photo
i'm happy with.

I'll give that a go, as its cheaper.:-)

I suppose thats a bad phrase to use. If i look at any other photo in
Vueprint, unless i blow the shot, i can see a nice sharp image, even
before any processing.
If i look at the D200 action shots, they are definetly softer, need
more push, a lot more push, and most of the time, i;'m not happy with
the "crispness" to the photo.

It sounds as if the D200 filter is stronger than most of its earlier
models and the K10D.
