So all I got to do to get away from them is go off-road.

Actually it was late in the day, the light was fading fast, the lens was
wide open and I only had time for one exposure before it was getting too
dark to hand hold. I took other exposures that were unusable but it's
digital after all, and and what are a few wasted photons among friends?

We are surrounded with wildlife preserves and "Gray Lodge State Wildlife
Area", where state permits may be issued allowing duck, goose and pheasant
hunting and where I went earlier this AM.
In all the years I've been stalking "wildlife" in Gray Lodge, I've never
seen so many Snow Geese both on the water and in the air.
I've included a couple of goose flock shots and one (into the sun) of a
small group of Turkey Vultures.

Dave,
I noticed the shot, very nice.
And Frank, when the pony takes ribbons like that,
you want them to know where it was at!
(My wife has an old photo of her riding at the Kansas State Fair.
Nothing special, but Harry Truman was at the rail in the background.
Her parents snapped it up in a heartbeat.)

Is that something like the bushman's method of cooking a galah?

Put the galah in a boiler with a rock - when the rock is soft, throw
away the galah and eat the rock.

Re: PESO: State Wildlife Area

2008-11-17 Thread Brian Walters
Excellent images of the Snow Geese, Jack. I probably prefer the first
one by a small margin. The 80-320 proves yet again what a surprisingly
good lens it is.

The image of the vultures is less successful - into the sun, as you
mention, didn't help, but it would have been nice if the ones on the
left and right had been more cooperative and faced the camera

Thanks, Bob. Yeah, I like the second flock shot best, also. More open and
crisper image. Although I didn't intend it, the first was shot at 320mm. A
setting I try to avoid in most cases.
Vultures weren't a "hazy" distance away, just up sun, but the effect is much
the same.

I pre ordered this lens a few weeks ago from http://www.TeKaDe.de
It was supposed to be available around Christmass, now I received an

Segways can be taken offroad, with the right equipment:

Re: Old paper - to what use?

2008-11-17 Thread Lasse Karlsson

Hi Bob, and thanks.

No, I haven't really thought about trading, since I think the paper may be
too old to be of any real use. But I guess I could ask someone, or maybe
just give them away for free to someone who at least wants to give them a
try.

Thanks also Godfrey and P.J. - yes, you may be right about wasting time and
the trouble to fixate it just to get some white paper which still may be
rather useless.

I will be glad to get the boxes though, I always thought they were nice,
fairly sturdy and well designed...

Thanks,
Lasse

Lasse,
Hi, nice to see you posting.
Have you considered trading the paper for some prints.
Can you find someone who is still running a wet darkroom and printing
service?

Would they take paper in trade for some printing?

Hi Ann,

What kind of mess did you make? Did the ink and the printer get messy?

You could take up painting, perhaps :)

Yes, I have done some and have been thinking of doing some more of that.
However I don't know if photographic paper is well suited for being

Yes.

Sorry if I used the wrong term. I don't mean modern paper made for
like
inkjet or laser printing, but plain old photographic paper for making
regular prints in a darkroom.

In that case, it's unlikely that they will be any use for inkjet
printing. But you could try.

I would just give them a go in the normal way of printing. It might
be
worth researching some recipes for contemporary developer for the
older

papers. Test strips first.

Well, I don't have any darkroom set up and neither does it seem that I
will be getting any, although I have been thinking that I might...

It's just that I keep thinking about what a great picture coould be
realized on this empty paper...
Maybe I'll just frame one empty paper and I and anyone can project
their

hopes and ideas to it.
I guess I just like the paper as such so much.

Anyway, the boxes are nice and while thinking it over some further I
might start with separating the boxes from the papers and make some
good use

of them.

There's a guy buying an enlarger lens from me, I might ask if he wants
the papers for free.

Thanks,
Lasse

If the store doesn't want my business I'm just as happy to save money.

That's what I thought many years ago when I stopped dealing with that store.

That stores policy was actually very good for me.
It led to me being able to get equipment directly from Pentax at a great
cost save.

Which if that's the way it goes means, buy it online from B&H, give it a
quick test, if it's good save money, if it's bad, send it back. If the
store doesn't want my business I'm just as happy to save money.

Bill, here in Israel the following is very common practice. You walk
in a store and ask for something. They walk away and return with the
box which they put on the counter. You ask to open it and actually try
it before you commit your money. They respond that by doing so they
risk so many shekels worth of goods. You parry by saying that you
cannot buy something that may not work. They respond in turn that
whatever is the problem you will have it resolved by the warranty and
that they'd be happy to assist you should invocation of warranty
become necessary.

What hides behind all this exchange is the fact that proving that the
lens such as DA* 16-50/2.8 malfunctions is going to be non-trivial
process. What you will claim is soft they will claim is normal.
Usually there is an indignant frown attached to it saying something
like - "this is professional gear, you just don't know how it works
for 'us' professionals. My nephew is also Pentaxian and he has this
lens and he loves it."

I know personally a guy who bought one of the first Nikon D2Xs here
(five digit sum in local currency, something like 3-4 times average
monthly salary) and couldn't actually prove to local Nikon dealership
that some of AF sensors of his camera malfed. He even wrote some
letters to Nikon Japan or whatever high authority outside Israel there
is. Ultimately, the firmware upgrade solved the problem, but I am sure
poor fellow lost some hair on the way.

Trust me, I've been through this story more than once. Unless I
develop a deep friendly (as in drinking beer together) relationship
with the dealer, the game is extremely risky. And unfortunately there
are no enough reaons for me to start developing such a relationship
(though I do like drinking beer, thanks to Thibouille ;-) ). Nor are
there any considerably reliable and long-lasting photo gear dealers
that also work with Pentax.

Doesn't Israel have any sort of consumer protection laws?
Here's how it works in Canada:
I go into a store and ask for a lens.
They will probably have to order it in, unless it is consumer glass.
When it arrives, I go to the store and mount it to my camera. I go out
to the parking lot and take a few snapshots of the brick wall of the
store across the lot.

If it looks good on the review screen I buy the lens.

Now this is where it gets nice for the buyer.
We have a set of consumer laws that state that if the product isn't
usable for the purpose for which it was sold, the seller must give a
refund within a reasonable time frame (several days at least).
So, if in the course of using my new lens, I notice a defect which
compromises it's usability, it goes back to the store, I get a refund,
and they order me a new lens, which then repeats the process.

It sounds like Israeli consumer laws favour protecting the merchant over
the buyer.

There is probably a cliche or two in there someplace.

Have you considered trading the paper for some prints.
Can you find someone who is still running a wet darkroom and printing service?
Would they take paper in trade for some printing?

In that case, it's unlikely that they will be any use for inkjet
 printing. But you could try.

I would just give them a go in the normal way of printing. It might be
worth researching some recipes for contemporary developer for the older
 papers. Test strips first.
