Excellent dynamic range,
24mm shorter focal length,

Cons:
High price,

Bad user interface (a nightmare).

Ann, the only "compact" camera with quality comparable to a DSLR
presently is the Sigma DP1. Price new about $650. I've never seen
one selling used, too new maybe. It has the quality of a DSLR and
most of the drawbacks of a compact, according to the reviews I've
read. It also uses the Foveon sensor, so it's doubtful that your
existing Canon software could even come close to properly decoding
the raw data.

I don't believe any of them shoot RAW. I think the A40

doesn't mean much because the sensors in these cameras
are tiny. I doubt you'd be able to do 11" x 17" even
at 300dpi with any consistancy. The newer models do
seem to have slightly better dynamic range than their
older cousins. I have the W60 and it does a much
better job at keeping highlights tamed. The lenses are
also only so-so and all seem prone to abberations to
one degree or another.

It's certainly possible to get great images from the
Optio cameras (at least under heavily controlled

PESO - Last night's big moon

2008-12-13 Thread John Celio
(Note: It's just a big photo of a full moon, there's really nothing that
special about it aside from the moon being in the news yesterday.)

Recently I discovered the sharpness "sweet spot" in my Pentax 500mm 4.5 is
at f11. Last night featured what was apparenly the largest full moon of the
year, so I went out and shot it when it was almost straight above me.

http://www.neovenator.com/2008/12/nights-full-moon-was-apparently-bigger.html

This image, shot with my K10D, is 800x800. If I had left the crop at 100%,
it would have been 919x919. I applied some unsharp mask to reduce
atmospheric blur, but I may have overdone it a bit. I truly wish I could
find an affordable teleconverter that wouldn't make my 500 look like it had
vaseline on the front element.

Anyway, this was just for fun. I'm not expecting comments or anything, but
thanks for looking. :)

OT: LowePro Orion AW or Inverse 200 Opinions?

2008-12-13 Thread Rick Womer
My faithful LowePro Off Road gave up the ghost this evening when its front
buckle broke, after about 15 years of heavy use. This model is no longer
available at B&H, Adorama, or Calumet.

The Orion AW and Inverse 200 look interesting. Has anyone here used them?

it is just adequate. But a really handy size. I think keith's recommendation
is good, in other words. You can get decent shots with a 6mp DSLR so a 6mp
Optio is probably about as low mp as you should go. Several s6s selling on ebay

Note I do love the size of the Optio S4i (seems same size as the s6), it
fits easily into a purse.

I have a really good 35mm darkside camera... I just want something that
is a Pentax so I can legitimately
put recent things in the PUG and also I liked the macro in the
optio Robb had at GFMI want to slip something
in my pocket and carry it everywhere so I can get a shot now and then
that I would miss because I wasn't able

to carry a heavier camera.

I just thought MAYBE that a point and shoot now could do raw captures

Pros:
Fast, excellent lens,
Excellent dynamic range,
24mm shorter focal length,
A meter hard to fool,
RAW capture.

Cons:
High price,
60mm longer focal length,
Bad user interface (a nightmare).

Ann, the only "compact" camera with quality comparable to a DSLR
presently is the Sigma DP1. Price new about $650. I've never seen
one selling used, too new maybe. It has the quality of a DSLR and
most of the drawbacks of a compact, according to the reviews I've
read. It also uses the Foveon sensor, so it's doubtful that your
existing Canon software could even come close to properly decoding
the raw data.

at 300dpi with any consistancy. The newer models do
seem to have slightly better dynamic range than their
older cousins. I have the W60 and it does a much
better job at keeping highlights tamed. The lenses are
also only so-so and all seem prone to abberations to
one degree or another.

It's certainly possible to get great images from the
Optio cameras (at least under heavily controlled
conditions) but I've found after 50,000+ images with

I've got 3 Optios, the original S, the Optio 50 and the first Optio
MX. My favorite by far is the Optio MX. Auto, shutter or aperture
priority and the unique ability for "super macro", which means it will
focus to the front of the lens. The only disadvantage is no optical
viewfinder, however the lcd finder is movable.

Re: Wanted to buy: Optio - need advice

2008-12-13 Thread ann sanfedele
Keith - Joe McAllister has recommended the z10... it sounds spectacular
and within my budget...

7x optical zoom and up to 3200 ISO...
" The Pentax Optio Z10 is a small, compact digital camera
 with a
twist - despite being the same size as a pack of playing cards, it
features a 7x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-266mm. Furthermore the
lens is internal and doesn't extend from the camera, protected by a
plastic screen and a sliding lens cover. The Pentax Z10 has an 8
megapixel sensor, digital shake reduction mode for both still pictures
and video, a 2.5 inch LCD monitor
, ISO
64-3200 and Face Recognition. A 7x zoom camera is something of a
departure from the norm for Pentax, who usually specialise in more
conservative 3x zoom models. Have they bitten off more than they can
chew with the Z10? Mark Goldstein reviewed the Pentax Optio Z10 to find
out."

I know 11x17 50mg 300 dpi is printing talk -- its a matter of being able
to interpolate up to that... 300 dpi = 300ppi

SOunds pretty neat to me... and B&Hhas one for $124...
I'm going there tomorrow to buy printer ink and paper anyway

The Optios won't. They record at 2304 X 1728 pixels at best, and that
ends up being a jpeg (Exif 2.2)

The fastest setting is ASA (ISO) 200.

Which has the largest sensor?

All the small Optio series, thru S6 at least, have the same sensor,

Can I just hook it up to my computer to load?

Yes.

The usual asking price for one today is right around that level.

I'd like to be able to pull images out of it big enough for

Can't help you there. The specs you quoted are printing specs, not
photographic terms. but ask any camera store how large a print can you
make from a good 6 MP CCD sensor. The Pentax lens is a beaut and
well-corrected, and the physical size of the camera mean nothing. It's
the sensor size and pixel count!

Ann, the only "compact" camera with quality comparable to a DSLR presently
is the Sigma DP1. Price new about $650. I've never seen one selling
used, too new maybe. It has the quality of a DSLR and most of the
drawbacks of a compact, according to the reviews I've read. It also uses
the Foveon sensor, so it's doubtful that your existing Canon software
could even come close to properly decoding the raw data.

seem to have slightly better dynamic range than their
older cousins. I have the W60 and it does a much
better job at keeping highlights tamed. The lenses are
also only so-so and all seem prone to abberations to
one degree or another.

It's certainly possible to get great images from the
Optio cameras (at least under heavily controlled
conditions) but I've found after 50,000+ images with
them that they're really best suited for snaps.

Re: Wanted to buy: Optio - need advice

2008-12-13 Thread Brian Walters
Hi Ann

Some time ago I was looking for an Optio that I could cart around when I
didn't want to lug the SLR.

I eventually settled on a second hand Optio 550. It won't do what you
want (but as others have said, no Optio will). Having said that, I'm
happy with it - unlike many other point-and shoots, it at least allows a
modicum of user control (aperture priority, shutter priority and manual
as well as Program).

It's only 5 megapixel but I was only looking for something in the 5-6 MP
range because I was concerned about unacceptable noise at higher
resolution with the small sensors these things use. It has a max ISO of
400. The best you'll get out of a 5MP camera at 300 dpi is about 8.5 in
x 6.5 in but it can be pushed to 11 x 8 acceptably.

I paid about $A75 on Ebay.

(It's also a nice looking camera :-)> )

Used Pentax smc -A 50mm f 1.4 lens on the darkside body (Canon 300d -
digital rebel) Not planning on submitting
this one for the book - but it does seem I can still focus manually.
the actual f stop was 5.6

Bless you, Cotty

Dear Pentaxians,

Tune in next Tuesday, December 16, at 2:01 P.M. California time. Pentax

Who knows what it will be? I can't wait to see.

Re: PESO: (little off) I bought a compact camera :)

2008-12-13 Thread PN Stenquist
Maybe I should shoot a roll with my father's Agfa folder. It's a 6x6.
I've been meaning to do that ever since I cleaned the lens and warmed
up the shutter a bit. It had been sitting for at least forty years. It
focuses by scale as well. As I recall, he got lucky from time to
time:-).

Yes. There is a focus scale on the "lens" and you try to guess the
distance and set it :)
Previously I used a Zeiss Ikonta (was my grandfather's camera in the
40's) and that one had the same system.

I have bought a roll of Ilford B&W film and will shoot it probably
next week (hoping for better weather).

I am really happy for this nice camera.

Should be fun. Is focus by scale?

Yesterday I went in an antique shop with a friend (we like to go

First what grabbed my attention is a Zenit 122 with a Jupiter
f2/85mm lens on it. It was quite cheap so I was sure to buy it :)
Asked the dealer to get it off from the shelves and as he took the
other items he picked a leather box... a small brown box approx.
15x10x4 centimeters... I asked him if I can see what it is. Well
it was a compact camera from the 30's, a Voigtlander Bessa.

So after some bargain I got the price for the two cams down to ~95$.

So here is my newest compact camera with the highest resolution
Medium Format available (9x6cm "sensor size" :D), with a fix 110mm
lens with f4.5-16 aperture, 1/250 fastest shutter speed, dual
viewfinder, full metal body:

Oh yeah, the picture was made with the Jupiter 85mm @ f2 :)

And there will be a photo-flea market tomorrow! (I am trying to
take no money with me :D)

Cheers,

2008-12-13 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Pretty. I used to have Zeiss Ikon Super Ikontas ... had an A (6x4.5)
and a B (6x6). Always wanted a C as well (6x9) but I stopped shooting
film before I found a decent one that I could afford.

Another lovely old medium format folder I saw recently was a Balda ...
I think 6x4.5 ... and just beautiful.

Doug Brewer has suggested that any lurker who wants a photo in the

Seems fair. (And Doug can check his records to make sure they really

How would anyone post a message of introduction if they were not list

The message of introduction is for people who *are* list members, but
are lurking (as opposed to those who aren't members but find this thread

If you're not wedded to the idea of a Pentax p&s you could look at some of
the Panasonic Lumix cameras which shoot raw. A used one might be in your
range. Similarly, the Canon G-9 or earlier models, although the G-9 is
rather bulky.

Beyond one of you selling it to me...

Do any of these point and shoots shoot raw?

The Optios won't. They record at 2304 X 1728 pixels at best, and that ends up
being a jpeg (Exif 2.2)

The fastest setting is ASA (ISO) 200.

Which has the largest sensor?

All the small Optio series, thru S6 at least, have the same sensor, 1/2.5".

Can I just hook it up to my computer to load?

Yes.

Can I use my Canon Zoom browser to load stuff?

Recommendations for one for no more than $150 ?

The usual asking price for one today is right around that level.

I'd like to be able to pull images out of it big enough for submitting
stuff to stock (their min requirement is 11 x 17 at 300 ppi and at

least 50 mgs)

Can't help you there. The specs you quoted are printing specs, not photographic
terms. but ask any camera store how large a print can you make from a good 6 MP
CCD sensor. The Pentax lens is a beaut and well-corrected, and the physical size
of the camera mean nothing. It's the sensor size and pixel count!

Having seen a used DP1 (and tried it), it has most of the drawbacks of
an old compact, the current lot are much better cameras than the DP1
apart from the sensor. It's very slow, very unresponsive, the LCD
sucks (an issue when that's your only viewfinder) and generally poor
handling. Sigma's managed to come up with a P&S that's less
competitive than its SLR line (and that's something since the Sigma
SLR's make the Pentax MZ-series seem like the pinnacle of technology)

Ann, the only "compact" camera with quality comparable to a DSLR
presently is the Sigma DP1. Price new about $650. I've never seen one
selling used, too new maybe. It has the quality of a DSLR and most of
the drawbacks of a compact, according to the reviews I've read. It
also uses the Foveon sensor, so it's doubtful that your existing Canon
software could even come close to properly decoding the raw data.

Yes. There is a focus scale on the "lens" and you try to guess the
distance and set it :)
Previously I used a Zeiss Ikonta (was my grandfather's camera in the

I have bought a roll of Ilford B&W film and will shoot it probably next

Hi Ann,
No point and shoot that I know of has a large enough sensor to deliver
the kind of image quality you need for 50 meg stock images. It's just
a matter of physics. There are cameras that are more compact than a
DSLR that can deliver quality images but not for less than $150, even
on the used market.

I didn't really fiddle with perspective, per se - -- only fiddling I
did in photo shop was noising out 2 birds that looked like
specs of dust in the sky, cropping a bit top and bottom , and slight
upping saturation .. AND more important to mention I grabbed the
building far left with that magic wand tool and then clicked on the
"lighten shadows-darken highlights" thing from
the pulldown "enhance" menu -- the building would have otherwise been
almost black... I'm using Elements 5.
