I'm not sure where my stainless reels are, but to be honest I never
used the clip. Once you get it started, the clip doesn't do anything,
and it's easier to get it started holding the end of the film in place
than it is clipping it in.

Re: PDML book is live! (And, damn, you people are GOOD!)

2009-02-16 Thread Stan Halpin
Image Wrap option means that the cover photo is imprinted into the
texture of the cover rather than having a separate glossy-paper book
cover (dust jacket).
Advantage of Image Wrap option is that it will be more durable; with
frequent handling, a paper dust jacket can easily be torn.
Advantage of Dust Jacket option is that the cover image will be much
higher quality. Plus you will have whatever material the editor chose
to put on the inside flaps front and back. Underneath the dust jacket
is a plain black cover.
Softcover is like Image Wrap: the image is printed on the cover
material itself and there are no inside flaps with whatever the
editor may have included there. However, with the softcover, because
of the material used, the image quality on the cover will be closer
to the paper dust jacket than to the Image Wrap version. And the
softcover itself is also prone to damage from careless handling, but
it will be more durable than the paper dust jacket.

Summary:
Cover image quality: Dust Jacket > Softcover > Image Wrap
Durability of cover: Image Wrap > Softcover> Dust jacket
Durability of book: Image Wrap = Dust Jacket > Soft cover
Extra editorial material on cover flaps: Dust Jacket version only

Subject: Colour temp of LED stage lighting ... ?

As I'm encountering LED stage lighting more and more, and as my trusty
K100D Super doesn't include a WB setting for them, a question for the
physicists and lighting gurus on the list: what is considered to be the
colour temperature of typically available LEDs? Is there a recommended
near-enough equivalent setting among the WB choices?

When I run pix through ACR after the shoot, I find that I'm getting
more-or-less reasonable results with ACR's temp/tint sliders near their
extremes; eg 2000/-128 or else something like 11,500/-64.

(I'd love to sneek up onstage before the show and attach a grey card to
something so I could keep calibrating during the performance.
Sometimes I'm lucky and there's a greyish keyboard onstage I can refer to.)

I suppose that LEDs present an near-impossible task since they are made
up of clusters of green, red and blue LEDs whose brightness is varied to
get the desired colour. I expect that the colour-temp of each
colour-type of LED is different.

Anyway, anyone have a suggestion?

A week or so ago eight of us who call ourselves the "Aviation Group"
at our church made a fun flight to Ocala for breakfast. We took two
planes and swapped people on the return flight so we all (except the
two pilots) got the chance to experience each type aircraft.

I was in the Columbia 400 going and the 172 for the return flight. We
tried some air to air shots of the Columbia but the poor little 172
was bouncing up and down so much that John was a little leary of
coming in real close, so nice closeups were not possible!

The opening shot and a few others in the cockpit were with the 10~17
FE, the rest with the Sigma 17~70. It was a fun time for all, and the
breakfast was excellemt! The two "older" gents in the shot are both
WW2 or Korean War Vets. Bill flew B-25's in New Guinea and Japan and
Jim (the short fella) flew A-26 Invaders and the Air Force B-66.

It's also one of the things I like about the Sigma APO 400/5.6 Macro (3m

Wait'll you get the bug for glass! I'm /so/ glad I got through a

 I got an FA* 200/2.8 and an F* 300/4.5 for less than US$ 1,000,

I'm looking for the stainless film developing reels that have two "hooks"

Does anyone have one or two they might be willing to part with for a reasonable

That's not quite what I'm seeing with 8.1.6. On my test album the

Dave -

I just installed the latest version, 8.1.6, and there *is* a problem
with the watermark. There's a bug that prevents the you from making a
color choice so the watermark shows up better. If you increase the
opacity to 100% you can barely see the watermark in the image. If
you're in a bind and don't have a copy of an older version where the
watermark works, let me know. I still have a copy of an older setup
file that I can get to you.

Having a hell of a time. The older version let me just type in David J
Brooks, but i cant seem to do it now.

Any one use the program and can tell me how to get Copy right David J
Brooks into the center of the shot, at about 5--6-5 opacity.
I'd like to use the program for this years horse hsow pages, but if a
can t put on a water mark its not going to work for me.

I'v looked on the net, and its all greek to me, i dont understand

Hmmm. I'm using 8.1.6 and the 'Check for Updates" item in the "Help"
menu is telling me I have the latest version. I've also just been to
the JAlbum website to download 8.1.7 but the downloadable version is
still listed as 8.1.6.

How did you manage to get 8.1.7?

I've never realised that you can add a watermark directly in JAlbum
(Chameleon skin). I've always done that in image management software
before importing the image into JAlbum. Any reason why you can't do it
that way?

Very inconsiderate of the George Eastman House not to open a branch in
your Rochester. It is the original, after all. (The college I attended
in Rochester, NY was "St. John Fisher".)

And, yes, pictorialism was very good at first. And I'm also keen to see

Colour temp of LED stage lighting ... ?

2009-02-16 Thread Bruce Walker

Oh god, really. I've filmed from them a few times (why always rough
weather?) and the up-down thing is stomach churning, not to mention all
that pre-flight malarky that takes ages while trundling up and down a
taxi-way like the pilot is lost and looking for anywhere that might lead

From out of the past...

2009-02-16 Thread Stan Halpin
I am thinking I might claim 12 years - Feb 1997. Have found some more
notes in my "archives" that could have been pulled from the list
archives, but I believe this was during my first year on the list.

Some words of wisdom from a former list member...

stan

Houston, Jerry (jhous...@walldata.com)
Thu, 24 Jul 1997 10:36:36 -0700

A thread that's run through a few messages lately has held that
there are different games we play using our photographic
equipment. I find myself agreeing with that. Just as you wouldn't
play hockey with a first-baseman's mitt, and you wouldn't wear a
football helmet to play basketball, it's silly to use a zoom lens
for jobs that really require the utmost in resolution and contrast.

What isn't so obvious, is that it's EQUALLY SILLY to use a fine-
quality fixed-length lens as the one lens you carry with you to
unknown photo opportunities. That's where a zoom lens is needed,
and nothing else will work well.

So I really believe that the old debate of zooms-vs-fixed-length
lenses is patently moot. I really don't think there IS anything to
debate, unless it's which lens to buy first and which one to put
off until there's more discretionary cash available. Usually you
can narrow down the subject by specifying a particular purpose for
the lens, but in this case (portraits) I'm going to disagree with
those who insist on the traditional 85mm or 90mm, or 100mm or
135mm fixed-focus lens for portraits.

In the first place, I don't believe that the usual head-and-
shoulders portrait is necessarily the most desirable, and it's
CERTAINLY not the only portrait option available. If I were to
photograph a violin maker, I'd want to capture his concentration
as he hand-fits one of his masterpieces with a wood chisel. My
portrait of a winemaker would show him tasting a work-in-progress,
in the cellars, next to the casks. Does this make sense to anyone
else? Depending on the person, their interests, their usual
surroundings, and so on, you might find that the most meaningful
portraits require anything from mild wide-angle to a moderate
telephoto. Sounds like a typical 28-80 or 35-105 might fit pretty
well, doesn't it?
And considering the special effects gizmos that even pros use for
portraits, ranging from soft-focus lenses to optical garbage like
"soft spot" filters (not to mention Vaseline), I don't think
anyone could make a reasonable case against a zoom lens on the
basis of its sharpness or contrast, or lack of either.
I think one of the most exciting things about photography as a
creative outlet is that we can feel free to break all the rules
and not get into trouble over it. It's all part of developing a

Not a clue here. But since I've upgraded I can't seem to set the PUG
back to 5 columns. It defaults to 6, which I think is too wide.

It works.

It's sharp.

It rotates as well as shifts (pick your shift from a rose compass
of 12 directional settings) and shift far enough to get a 1.3
million 65' tall water tank corrected and in a vertical frame from
less than 60' away.

It can shift enough to vignette the opposite end of the frame, if
you let it.

You have to be a bit careful using other people's judgement as your
yardstick. The risk is that you start shooting stuff that you think they
will like, rather than stuff you like, and in many cases it means lowering
your standards.

I have the same attitude to shooting for the RPS distinctions. Although they
gave me a rough time with my last submission, I won't shoot anything just to
please them, although I'm pleased to get their criticism and feedback. The
first thing my pictures have to do is please me. If they please the RPS too,
then all well and good, but the only judgement that really matters is mine.

I'm not far from Rochester - it's just a few miles downstream from

I agree with that but the reason I keep contributing is that the
existence of the PPG has given my photography more focus (no pun
intended). I'm more conscious of composition and lighting and I tend to
take more time in exploring the possibilities of a subject.

So, whenever I have an photo I particularly like, I submit it.
Occasionally one gets in - more often they're rejected. But that's not
the point. The PPG is helping to improve my photography (even if that's
very slow progress.)

That's probably true of much of what they publish nowadays. It was an ok review
but I was suprised by how bad a photo they used of the front of the camera
itself (pg.74)..it's overexposed and there's no DOF. So, there's sloppiness in
other places, too.

BTW, their choice for 2008 Camera of the Year is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1.

Pictorialism exhibit at George Eastman House

2009-02-16 Thread Mark Roberts

Just read about this on The Online Photographer:
http://www.eastmanhouse.org/exhibits/container_116/

I used to live in Rochester and I miss being able to go to the George
Eastman house any time I wanted. I'll definitely be making a trip up
there in the spring and will be certain to catch this exhibit (it runs
through 31 May).

Any people in the Rochester area on the list these days?

I gave up trying to contribute. The submission process is awkward and
lengthy to do. Since the voting nonsense began, many photos that are
rejected are of better quality than the ones accepted, IMO.

I left what had been accepted of mine there as I saw no reason to pull

Re: 11 years (was: 4 years)

2009-02-16 Thread Bruce Dayton
I've been trying to remember when I came on the list - my best guess
is 1997 sometime - shortly after my son was born. My interest in
photography was peaked then and I got going with my Super Program and
then picked up a ZX-10 and went on from there.

Does anyone remember Mark Dalal? I remember he organized the first
Norcal PDML at Muir Woods - Met John Francis there, among several
others.

GESO: Ocala Breakfast Flight

2009-02-16 Thread Walter Hamler
http://walthamler.smugmug.com/gallery/7376009_CJKyg#474966499_d8NCY

There is a muck larger market for the opposite: a camera that
downloads a _good_ image of whatever it's pointed at, instead of
taking a poor one.
It'll need wifi, GPS and a way to blend in the people in the
foreground. Technologically, we're 90% there.
