I just made my flight itinerary

I get into Midway at 6:33 PM on Thursday 4/30 and leave for home
3:36PM on Tuesday 5/5.

I'll let people know about free time for lunch and dinner. If anyone
likes music, there will be live bands at several of the venues.

I think that the last official event of the weekend ends about 5AM
monday morning (judging by prior events), and I don't think there is
much, if anything scheduled monday evening, or during the day Friday
or Monday.

Here's some video of blues dancing I took with my IR FZ-20:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157607735540587/

The quality would make Cotty cringe, but his rig might not do much
better at EV0, -1 or whatever you call it when the nominal exposure is
ISO 3200, f/1.8 1/6 second.

Bob, you have your way with words, surely so. I, for one, don't do
photography for profit. Although as of recently I have to shoot lots of
events of my daughter's class. Which is somewhat akin to wedding
photography as I have to produce coverage (at least two-three shots of
each kid, given 30+ of them) and of course quality. I decided (since I
get to do what I want) that I just shoot, apply minimal processing (say,
2-3 mins of LR for each chosen shot) and produce a disk with web size
and full res images. So far parents appear to quite like the outcome.
But then again I do it for fun and for free and as a bonus I get to
watch after my daughter during all these events...

I reckon this is a truly small token in this discussion, but still.

P.S. As yet another side effect I got myself a rather nice Metz 40MZ-2

I would like to see this lens compared to the
little know "other" 55mm K mount lenses, the
SMCK 55/1.8/2.0. To be fair, it would be best
to put a 83mm equiv hood on them to limit their
image circles in the camera. I wouldnt expect them
to be as good near wide open, but stopped down
somewhat would be interesting... The K55 lenses
are pretty good from what I remember with film
tests, less distortion than the 50mmF1.4 lenses
had too.

I'm excited. This'll be my first "too far to drive" out of town dance
event in several years. It'll also be my first time (at least in my
memory) going to Chicago. I hope to get there Thursday night and maybe
stay an extra day or two.

If you want to see me while I'm back there, offer me crash space
(local dancers generally provide housing during the event, but it may
be handy to have some before/after), or let me know about "can't miss"
events, that I should schedule around, or if you just want to be kept
up to date about my travel plans, drop me a note.

I expect to be pretty busy from Friday evening through about 6am
Monday morning (about the time the last dance of these weekends tends
to end), though I may have time for lunch or dinner near where the
classes/dances are.

Hold your tongue, Bob. When Saint Henri came back from Africa he was
forced to convalesce for a time and to merely subside on a stipend

Perhaps the button makers define "convalesce" differently.

Long-term posters here will probably remember my story of when
I almost missed my footing climbing to a photographer's tower.
While I did avoid falling several feet, and I didn't actually
drop anything, my 250-600 swung around and rather neatly knocked
my MZ-S off the back of the lens (well, most of it - it did leave
part of the lens mount still attached to the lens).
Fortunately the 250-600 itself came through unscathed.

Motorsports photography can be tough on equipment. My A* 300/2.8
has been knocked off the pitside wall a couple of times, and the
80-200 definitely shows signs of hard use over the years.

There were a lot more birds. But they flew off, naturally, as soon as I
approached.

Must be a flock of about 10-20 here. Weren't around before, or not many,
although we've always had black birds (which have a pretty song). But since
last
summer I've seen more and more in this area, in all of California actually.
Concerns me a bit, because done some reading up, and they tend to drive other
birds out. And evidentially about a year or two ago Japan got over run with
them and they became a menace. So I keep wondering if that is going to happen
here.

I'll probably try again -- think they'll be around for a while,
unfortunately.

Re: ist ds and ds2?

2009-03-23 Thread Adam Maas
The DS2 has a 2.5" LCD and slightly faster SD write speeds as well as
a few extra options in the firmware. The DS has a 2.0" LCD. The
firmware changes were given to the DS as well in v2.0 of the DS
firmware. So they're essentially identical. The Samsung GX-1S is a DS2
with slightly different firmware as well (Essentially just different
look to the UI and tweaked RAW format).

said hit me at a more visceral level.

I'm not saying I'm very good at any type of photography, but there are
some genres that I feel somewhat comfortable with and I don't think
I'm horrible at those few things.

That being said, I always thought that landscape photography was easy.
I mean, hell, the trees and mountains and meadows and whatever else
don't move very fast, ya gots lots of time to set up yer tripods and
aim and everything. What's tough about that? Photography's all about
The Decisive Moment, right? What's decisive in a babbling brook?

Then I took my first trip to GFM, got home (in those pre-digital - for
me - days) got my stuff developed and was greatly humbled. I mean, I
had a few keepers, but I realized that those were more lucky accidents
than anything else.

To be blunt, ~my stuff sucked~!!

My admiration for the photographers on this list that do amazing
landscape work bumped up several notches that spring.

So, I have to agree with Godfrey on this one. Landscape photography
is incredibly difficult! At least it's difficult if one wants to
achieve anything half-way decent.

ah, but he said "truly stunning"

Some of you may remember my older daughters work over the years. I
have posted a few of their images from time to time.

My second daughter is in her first year of college. For this past
Christmas she received my old *istD along with a couple of lenses
(her favorite being an A 35-105/3.5). While out at college she has
started to really do some shooting. I present on gallery that she
did on a weekend with a roommate of hers. I'm quite proud of her
because she has figured out most of this on her own. To me, she is
showing some real artistic flair - but of course, I am prejudice.

Anyway, for those who would like to take a look and comment:

I agree with this statement. And it's how to successfully run a

If you run a business, re-read that statement."

I'm glad I'm an amateur.

The other way to look at it is if you're running a business, you have to
find clients who will be satisfied by the kind of product you produce.

If you want to sell photographic services free from over reliance on
Photoshop, look for clients who don't want over reliance on Photoshop.

But, it's a niche market, and perhaps a very competitive one.

I think the telling response was someone's comment that if your clients

You will need a flash gun, a tripod and a naked lady gymnast with
illuminated extremities.

Using slow sync, 2nd-curtain flash, with a shutter speed of 1/15th,
photograph the naked lady gymnast turning a cartwheel in the opposite sense
of the ferris wheel.

Use dim front lighting and a long exposure. The resulting circle of
light created by the wheel will provide an unusual backdrop for the
couple. You work out the details.

Last night I came up with the idea of silohetting a person or couple
against it, either unlit so that they are dark, or possibly with a
flash.

At noon, I was reading light science and magic about photographing
glass and they were talking about having a dark background that has
light around the frame. It occurred to me that if I could have the
ferris wheel in the background, with someone sillohuetted in front of
it and something like a wineglass with the ferris wheel providing
colored edge lighting, it might make a fun photo.

Or it might end up in an epic, but educational, fail.

Maybe if I ask for advice now, my next post on the subject will be
"how can I do this better" rather than "why was it a total failure".

That's a popular fallacy. The early pictorialists were aiming for a
scientific naturalism which used differential focus in imitation of the way
the eye is supposed to work. They were in reaction against the prevailing
style of art photography which really did try to imitate painting. This is
exemplified by the work of photographers such as Henry Peach Robinson and
Oscar Rejlander who produced montages in the style of grand academic
paintings - very much the way Photoshop is used now for so much. P H Emerson
and his followers rejected this in favour of getting out and about in the
real world and photographing work using supposedly naturalistic techniques -
as far as they were concerned they were shooting straight photographs.
Pictorialism degenerated into cliche and was rejected in turn by people like
Steiglitz who also thought they were shooting straight.

There's a fascinating book about P H Emerson called The Old Order And The
New, which accompanied an exhibition. I highly recommend it.

Probably slapping that poor mirror up into the goo that is all that's

Subject: Directions of photography?

I ran across this exchange recently and it caused me to do some
thinking:
http://photo.net/wedding-photography-forum/00SlvT

I have many of the same feelings as this guy presented. When I look
at much of the current work being shown, especially on photo.net
galleries, I see heavy handed manipulation being the norm and also
being judged very positively.

Anyway, some interesting fodder for discussion for those who care to
take a read. The thread discussion improves further down than near
the top -but you do have to read the initial post.

He's certainly fighting an uphill battle.
The advertising industry, which has always been about selling perfection,
often to the point of blatantly lying, is now all about Photoshop, with the
original image merely cannon fodder for the graphic arts department.
While I really don't understand why a bride and groom would want to look
like Becky Carter victims all growed up in their wedding pictures, I also
understand that this is now the look of wedding photography.
Whether it more savvy customers, or just donks who want to follow the latest
trend is immaterial.
If you don't want to sell it, don't put it in your port and don't offer it
as a service.

Photography has always had an after the shutter clicks technical component
to it, digital photography has expanded the possibilities of what can be
done, and now photography is more about post processing than it is about
taking pictures.

The Genie is out of that particular bottle, and it isn't going home anytime
soon.
