Thanks for commenting, Dave. This is the only such image that's worked for me
to this point. For whatever reason.
It may partially have to do with the linear 'frame dividing' shape of the
cattail.(??)

Hi List,

Yesterday the lithuanian girl, Dovile asked me to go out and make
some
more pictures. The day was nice we had good weather (not raining
like last

time) so a few 'greener' pictures this time.

Re: PESO: Cattail

2009-05-02 Thread Jack Davis

It's just that I'd like more MB in case I want a large print.
It is a fairly narrow irrigation ditch. No way to place the cattail
perpendicular to the wave direction..if that was your thought. Also, it's not
apparent, but it was leaning back and to the right. I tilted the vertical hold
to give myself cropping room. Shooting direction was, also, influenced by there
being a lot of water grasses intruding at the edges of the frame. Needed to
clone out a few as well as their shadows.

Boris,
The last is the prettiest, good composition and framing with the fork
and clumps of greenery.
The most unusual for me is 'Up the Hill'. You are definitely 'not in
Kansas anymore', to quote Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz movie. It's
hard to believe the huge dune and a hill climb with the tall city in
the background. Just doesn't happen here!

and, of course, it could get a lot worse. If the pig flu virus recombines
with the bird flu virus we could end up with flying pig flu.

Here in Cincinnati, OH there is a Flying Pig Marathon, which passes right by
my front door. The event is tomorrow morning. Since this is the first one I
have been here for I have no idea what to expect. Guess I'll keep the K20

Re: PESO - Back Garden Rose

2009-05-02 Thread Bob Sullivan
Rick,
I guess you want those shadows, but the flower itself could be better.
It seems not quite as beautiful as a rose should be, if that makes sense.
I know the blossom is very open, but could it be sharper or bigger in frame?
And I'm no good with complementary colors, but that wall's red color
doesn't help.
All this said, you aren't pushing yourself unless you make some failures...

Thanks Luiz, and to the others who commented.

I got a look at the game pieces as I walked by the table; they =could= have
been dominoes with white markings on an off-white background, but I didn't see
any markings. Alas, I don't think we'll be getting back there soon to find out
what the game was.

Re: PESO: Cattail

2009-05-02 Thread Luiz Felipe

Don't worry too much, since it's a very good image as it is.

One of those things I wouldn't dream of trying - the pattern on the
water would lead me to an horizontal image, top of the plant one point
at left, diagonal opposite being something unknown so far, maybe part of
the surface pattern... probably nothing good, much worse than your
result. Of course this comment is being made with no knowledge of the
place, assuming I would see both the plant and the pattern on the water
surface, just to point how unique that particular photo is. It's rather
easy to suggest improvements after the image is taken and presented. :-)

Take five...

Jack, I looked at the comments before answering, so your
ideas are known by now... but here it goes anyway, and I
really didn't change much from the first impression,
before the reading.

I like the idea, and can't suggest improvements so
easily. I'm ok with the framing, the reflections and
texture in the water behind work great balancing the
vertical, a very good and interesting composition very well
executed. Very good.

second issue yesterday night. None of my photos were in this one, but
likely will be in the next one (they're aiming for four issues a year,
the next one being scheduled for August). I was asked to take pix at
the release party, which may be used on their website or possibly in a
future issue.

Someone else was shooting more "posed" shots, so I concentrated on
candid stuff. I also decided to take as many shots as I could of
guests reading the mag in such a way that the title of the magazine
could be plainly seen.

I think this was my favorite of that bunch:

I like the idea, and can't suggest improvements so easily. I'm ok with
the framing, the reflections and texture in the water behind work great
balancing the vertical, a very good and interesting composition very
well executed. Very good.

I respectfully disagree, Boris.

People need to label things for understanding and identification.

We ALWAYS need to know what to call something.

Sorry about the day, Bob. Life is fragile indeed. Some days are really
harder than the others.Hope the survivors - family, driver and you and
the passengers - manage to get over that, time is a healer and good
company helps very much.

Interesting photos. #5 is my fave - but #7 comes very close...

LF

Bob W escreveu:

A few weeks ago I booked today off work and bought myself a cheap train
ticket to go and see the bonobos at Twycross Zoo - my favourite animals,
which I've never seen in real life. This is the only place in Britain where
they can be seen, and has the largest collection of non-human primates in
the world. So I was up bright and early and onto the train looking forward
to a pleasant trip in the spring sunshine, and a nice day out with some
photos to show for it.

But as the train reached top speed just beyond Northampton someone stepped
onto the track and killed themself. I could hear and feel the bumps as the
the body hit the underside of the carriage.

The train came to a halt, of course, and there was silence until the driver
asked the guard to come to the cab. There was then a wait of over 2 hours
while a relief driver was brought, the emergency services cleared up the
mess, and the train was driven back to Northampton to be taken out of
service.

By then it was too late for me to continue - I would not have had enough
time to see the bonobos properly, and my mind was on other things, so I
returned to London where I had a very late lunch in Gordon Square Gardens in
Bloomsbury, which cheered me up somewhat. Here are some pictures of primates
enjoying the sun in a deciduous woodland habitat:

http://www.web-options.com/Primates/

It's a terrible thing for someone to be in such a state of mind that they do
something like that. Terrible for that person's family and friends, and
terribly unfair on the train driver, who is going to have to live with the
memory for the rest of his life.

Anyway, I'll have to book another day off to see the bonobos. They solve all
their problems by shagging each other senseless, which seems like a much
better solution to me.

Well, honest I am - brutal only in strict self-defense ;-)

Very interesting pics - considering the kind of horizon you show behind
the red car, you're making some pretty interesting compositions.

Favorites are Final Conquer and Fly Away - the first could benefit of a
stronger sky, not ours to command, and second without suggestions, since
a stronger sky here would fight the terrain curves and the tree. Keep
shooting!

Re: PESO 2009 - 059 - GDG

2009-05-02 Thread Luiz Felipe

Guess it's about the missing kid (missing as not in the photo).

Way back I almost unwillingly (?) took classes that included observing
the missing (not in vision) human beings from the presence or lack of
traces - usually in form of discarded or ready to be used clothing,
dishes, toys, tools and reading stuff. The payback is mixed and curious
- from readying the brakes when I see any kind of toy in the road to
being able to set credible scenes to product or people photos and videos.

... and including feeling a not seen kid somewhere in that photo. That
really triggers some lookout mood, for me.

Re: GESO - Dash & Will, Apple In-store

2009-05-02 Thread paul stenquist
My desktop is an iMac 25 with a glossy screen and my laptop is a
glossy screen Macbook. I was concerned when I first bought the IMac,
but I find that in my office/studio it doesn't reflect anything as
long as the light behind me isn't turned on. The Macbook is "flagged"
by my large and dull body when I'm using it, so again, no problems.
But it was a matter of concern at first.

Great shot. Nice atmosphere. Looks like dominoes doesn't it? But unless
