Re: May PUG -- Travel

2009-05-28 Thread Brian Walters
Thanks for your efforts in trying to raise the profile of the PUG, Dan
and for taking the time to do this review.

I pretty much agree with your assessments, with Nick's 'Going nowhere'
just nudging out George's 'On The Road" and Bruce's 'Like a Glove' as my
favourite.

Thanks also for your comments on my contribution and, as you were too
modest to review your own, may I?

Jordan Pond by Dan Matyola - A pleasing landscape with the rocks on the
right leading the eye to the two rounded peaks in the distance. The
underwater rocks and slight rippling of the water's surface both add
interest.

I note that the June PUG is also quite small. C'mon guys - let's have
wider participation in July.

Cheers

Brian

  o Special locking collars

  o Different groups of cameras:
Working Group for the high-end DSLRs

   etc., etc.

May PUG -- Travel

2009-05-28 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Since entries are closing for the June PUG, I thought I would comment
on the May PUG.

It is comparatively a small gallery, but there are some interesting
and highly effective shots.

My overall favorite is "On The Road" by George K. Vlachou. It
certainly well exemplifies the "Travel" theme, and it embodies the
"feel" of the Kerouac novel to which the title refers. The straight
and empty road beckons, and the clouds aid an air of mystery and
suspense. There is something undefined at the vanishing point -- the
hint of a hill or perhaps a storm -- that draws the eye. I like the
composition and the dominance of the green color of the fields. A
very polished and complete image.

"... like a glove" by Bruce Walker: Another good interpretation of
the theme. I enjoy the humor of this shot, and the way the image is
composed so that the tiny car over-fills the frame. The color of the
car and the reflections add to the overall effect.

"palafitaschilo" by jorge zaven kurkdjian: Nice colors and pleasing
composition.

"The Orca" by Filip Nicolai: The splash of red provided by the boat
contrasts well with the bright and dominant blue of the water for a
very effective image. The following gulls add a touch of humor that
enhances the whole.

"Moonrise, Imperial 500, Wildwood, NJ" by Matthew Hunt: I like the
warmth of the colors and melancholy effect of the empty parking lot.
It certainly has the feel of a Jersey Shore town.

"NB I-5, Snohomish, WA, USA" by Joseph McAllister: A strong
interpretation of the theme. It could use a more interesting sky, but
it makes the best of what is there.

"Going nowhere" by Nick David Wright: The boy's posture and His red
shirt make this image come alive and give it interest.

"Lost in Space" by William Robb: The bright blue sky balances the
emptiness of the landscape. I especially like the curve of the road
in the lower right corner.

"Waiting for the Main Course" by Brian Walters: This image has a
feeling of action and of anticipation that works well. I love the way
all the birds are facing inward, toward the fisherman. The red/orange
highlights on the fish draw attention to the center of the
composition.

Re: Logo 3 was OT New logo, try #2

2009-05-28 Thread John Celio

Thanks to all that offered suggestions for my new logo.

Here it is on the site.:

http://www.caughtinmotion.com/

I hadn't read much of this thread till just now, so I expect I will be
repeating a few things that others have noted. That said, I have a lot of
comments. I am a designer and thus a pretentious know-it-all, so feel free
to ignore any of the following.

First thing's first: 411kb for a logo is WAY too big for a simple website.
It took a long time to download even on my broadband connection. No casual
visitor is going to care enough to wait for it to load. I just noticed that
you're using a GIF that is 1463x640 pixels and manually resizing it via
HTML. Bad idea! Take your original image, shrink it to the desired size
and save a compressed JPG instead. The file size will be a lot smaller and
viewers won't know the difference, guaranteed.

Regarding the images, there are two things that really must be changed to
make your logo pleasing to the eye: make all the photos the same dimensions
and position them in a way that has better symmetry. Right now the images
look chaotic, like they were thrown together haphazardly. The first thing
I'd do is crop all the photos to the same aspect ratio and size. The
resulting equal spaces between photos will help the viewer's eye move among
them more easily than varied spaces. You may have to make some small
sacrifices to achieve this, but remember that this is only your logo, not
the actual photos. Your viewer won't notice or care if they're slightly
different from the large versions. Next, move the cat to the top right to
echo the horse on the left. Replace either the flower or the three horses
with a black & white photo and put it where the cat used to be, OR lose one
of the current building photos and replace it with a color photo that echos
the flower or horses. I realize there is color in the top left building
photo, but it looks black & white at this size and this makes the center of
your logo very grey. This is not really a good thing, as a logo that is
weak in the middle is a weak logo in general.

I'd suggest using upper and lower case letters in your logo text, rather
than all caps. All caps is more aggressive than I think you want to be,
and, for instance, "www.CaughtInMotion.com" is much easier to read and
remember than the all caps version. Try it and see what you think.

Lastly, you could make the logo much more versatile if you make it using
HTML, tables and small thumbnail images. If you make a table that is
800x300 (the size you have the logo scaled to on your page), you could
easily manipulate the contents to look almost exactly like what you have in
your current gif. Better yet, you can make it easy to change the images as
you see fit by putting individual thumbnails in each cell. This would allow
you to change photos as you take additional noteworthy shots in the future.
You can also easily add to or reduce the number of thumbnails. Finally,
assuming you're using small, compressed JPG thumbnails, you can make your
logo load VERY quickly using the table method.

I hope this helps,
John

 Is anyone here on LinkedIn?

I finally joined recently, in connection with a Rotary International
project that we will be promoting through the Official Rotary Group on
 LinkedIn.

I discovered, however, that there is also a Pentaxian Group.  It has
144 members, from all over the world.  They seem to discuss many of
the topics that we discuss here, but no PESOs and GESOs.

Surprisingly, I didn't find any familiar names.

Perhaps I should make them aware of this group and the PUG.  We might
gain a few interesting new Pentax fans.

Re: Logo 3 was OT New logo, try #2

2009-05-28 Thread Anthony Farr
I'm with Doug in thinking that this is a good masthead but is too much
for a logo. A logo doesn't even need to be one of your photos.

Until I looked I had been worried about directional integrity, so many
groupings like this are spoilt by higgledy-piggledy flows of movement
within individual pictures that conflict with the overall layout. If
your homepage version is more recent than your flickr version (I'm
backtracking from Pauls suggestion), then all you need do is flip-flop
the flower at top-right so that you have a directional consistency
from the centre outwards.

As a matter of personal taste I'd be inclined to lose the cat, not
because I'm a cat hater (I like them) but because everyone with both a
camera and a cat eventually puts a cat-picture on the web. They are a
cliche of the age, and say nothing about your professional capability.
Put catpix in the body of your website by all means, but not on the
masthead or logo.

If you plan to do pet portraiture as a business then disregard the
preceding rant :-)

The logo looks fine, Dave, but unless there's something I'm missing you have
quite a lot more work to do on the rest of the site. I looked at it in
Chrome, Opera and IE8 and it doesn't seem to have much in the way of page
layout design - is this intentional, or am I missing some sort of plug-in?
There are also quite a few spelling and grammar errors in the text.

It's OK, but the text gets lost in that presentation. If you're going
to do it that way (with the text kinda "dangling" from the bottom of the
grid of photos) you may need to put some sort of border around it.
Personally, I'd overlay the text on the photos.

My mis-spent youth involved a number of occasions where one was
encouraged to do very silly things like crawl over single rope bridges

that anything less silly doesn't count. :)

The "wee dram" part reminds me of the rule about local delicacies

dire and dreadful, consumed in penance and excuse for the strong drink.
One is much better off simply consuming the strong drink and leaving the

Well, John, that won't happen until I find a Pentax I can afford to

neither is AF. Cory has my Pentax SMC 400/5.6 and, /somewhere/ around

Re: PESO: The Rope Bridge

2009-05-28 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks to all for your comments.

The first image was taken by me, as I was standing on the bridge and
my son was following me. The second was actually taken by my wife,
who wouldn't even approach the bridge, from high above, using her
little Nikon . I included it just to set the scene for the shot of
my son on the bridge.

The bridge is quite high, as the second image shows. It is remade
each spring, to serve the fishermen who use the island. Yes, it is
new rope, and yes there are planks, but it is still a bit
intimidating.

We had to wait for the wind to calm down before they would let us
cross. The wind picked up on our return trip, just enough to make it
a bit exciting.

Carrick-a Rede and the Causeway Coast are among the most dramatic
sites on the Island, and definitely the most interesting spots in
Northern Ireland. Traditionally, after crossing the bridge both ways,
one goes to Bushmills, to visit the distillery and sample a wee dram.

Thanks,

Dan

I'd rather think some of those were intended to make noise, keep the
noise up, and keep the noise still higher. No doudbt they made a lot
of noise.

No, I'm not taking any leaks as truth. But I think they're not so

By the time I got a look, you had uploaded the revised edition as
well, which I liked. I'm no expert, but if the border and the dividers
could be scaled down a bit, they wouldn't overpower the images as they
seem to do now. Smaller text too. You're showing the photos, not the
name, at least online. On a business card, what you have would work
and be very readable.

Re: OT New logo, try #2

By the time I got a look, you had uploaded the revised edition as
well, which I liked. I'm no expert, but if the border and the dividers
could be scaled down a bit, they wouldn't overpower the images as they
seem to do now. Smaller text too. You're showing the photos, not the
name, at least online. On a business card, what you have would work
and be very readable.

Two shutters, one 35mm, one 645, the 35mm stacked behind the 645

Complex indeed. :-)

And the 35mm shutter would have to be before the 645 shutter. :-)

Wandering in New York City on a sultry night in Summer 2002, I made this

found it again yesterday while scanning the roll of film and thought it
might be interesting in both color and monochrome renderings.
