Re: Dirt(?) inside my *ist DL/camera bag recommendation

2009-09-28 Thread P. J. Alling
You have dust on the sensor. It's probably easily removable with a
blower. Just goto sensor cleaning in the menu and use a bulb blower to
gently blow the dust off the sensor. Or if you want to be slightly more
aggressive, I use 3M dust remover, it's a canned product but is
relatively gentle, though I'm sure rough handling will get it to spit.
If neither of those works you'll have to take sterner measures.

when I decided to buy an SLR I remembered how much I'd liked the
Spotmatic and bought a chrome MX and an M-series 50mm f/1.4. Over the
years I've bought quite a few K-mount bodies and quite a few lenses.
My favorite is my black MX. It has a minor problem that I'm willing to
live with because I almost never shoot film anymore. The counter
doesn't always reset to zero. That has to be the most beautiful camera
I have ever seen.

Three years ago I decided to get a digital SLR so I bought a * ist DL
and the kit lens, mostly because of the lens compatibility. I've been
very pleased with it. However I think something got inside of it while
changing lenses. For quite some time there have been some spots in the
photos that shouldn't be there. It's easily seen here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcgibson55/3663886483/in/set-72157620514334411

It's almost half way up the first tower then another bigger one
inbetwen the first two towers near the bottom. When I try to fix
something it almost always leads to disaster. Is this something that's
easily dealt with? If so I may sell it and step up to a K100D; one is
available in mint condition for what I consider to be a very good
price. I'd like to have a digital SLR body with image stabilization.
My niece has a K100D and it seems very nice.

While looking at bags at Best Buy recently I found a nice Lowepro (all
of my bags are Lowepro) that was being blown out too cheap ($12.99) to
pass up so I bought two even though I wasn't sure what I'd put in one.
It's the EX 140 and isn't in this year's catalog. I did some
experimentation and found that I can lay my *ist DL on its back with
the kit lens and hood on and the height is perfect. There's a teeny
bit of wiggle room on the bottom but that's easily remedied. Two of
the usual Lowepro Velcro type dividers are included. There's a front
compartment and either my Pentax-FA 28-90mm or Tamron 75-300mm will
fit in there. It's a bit snug with the Tamron but it fits.

Speaking of the FA 28-90mm I am underwhelmed with mine both optically
and build quality wise. Fortunately I didn't pay very much for it. I
need to figure out how to use my Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm on it.
That's a great lens.

I am contemplating selling some of my film bodies and lenses that
don't get used anymore. I live in a very expensive area and my wife
passed away from cancer two months ago. We just barely got by with two
incomes and now there's only one. The bodies would likely be an SFXn
(European version of the SF1n), Chinese K1000, P30T and a chrome MX
(the one referred to previously) that needs the foam replaced. The
lenses might be M-series primes such as the 135, 150 and 200mm and
there might be some nice aftermarket K/A zooms. I haven't decided
exactly what I'll let go of yet. Actually there is one I'm sure about;
the non SMC Takumar bayonet 135mm f/2.5. I was never happy with its
sharpness or contrast. The M-series 135mm f/3.5 is much better. If
there's any interest please write me directly.

Re: More Bike race photos

2009-09-28 Thread Stan Halpin
I'll provide a contrarian view. I've seen hundreds of bike races. I've
seen thousands of bike race photos. Many of them my own. They pretty
much all look the same. (The occasional exception stands out like the
John Francis shot from the Tour of CA from last (?) year.)

Your second set looks like pretty much what everyone else does. The
first set is quite special. Even though it was a salvage job.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to review an entire race (or heavens'
forbid a day of racing!) from this type of image, but everyone else
who has a P&S or a cellphone has those record shots. I say these were
a good save, made even better by the fact that the base images were
well composed to begin with.

BTW, for those who object to bike helmets or spandex or race jerseys
or sponsor advertising or any of the other accouterments of modern
bike racing, it is hard to imagine how you would be able to find any
bike racing shot to be to your liking...

Dennis,
You have dust on your sensor, at least 3 spots, probably got it changing lenses.
Try one of those big Atomic/Rocket blowers.
Use the menu and instruction manual to open the mirror and shutter.
While it's open, try to blow the dust off.
If you can't, visit a camera tech and get a $30 cleaning.

Re: Dirt(?) inside my *ist DL/camera bag recommendation

2009-09-28 Thread Adam Maas
Dennis,

You have a pretty clear case of sensor dust going, I'd recommend
getting the Pentax sensor cleaning kit and giving your sensor a good
wipe with it. The Pentax kit is one of the better ones on the market.
As the DL lacks an anti-dust system, it will need periodic sensor
cleaning.

Dirt(?) inside my *ist DL/camera bag recommendation

2009-09-28 Thread Dennis Gibson
Hi - I'm new to the group. About 35 years ago I learned photography using a
Spotmatic and fell in love with it. A number of years later when I decided
to buy an SLR I remembered how much I'd liked the Spotmatic and bought a
chrome MX and an M-series 50mm f/1.4. Over the years I've bought quite a few
K-mount bodies and quite a few lenses. My favorite is my black MX. It has a
minor problem that I'm willing to live with because I almost never shoot
film anymore. The counter doesn't always reset to zero. That has to be the
most beautiful camera I have ever seen.

Three years ago I decided to get a digital SLR so I bought a * ist DL and
the kit lens, mostly because of the lens compatibility. I've been very
pleased with it. However I think something got inside of it while changing
lenses. For quite some time there have been some spots in the photos that
shouldn't be there. It's easily seen here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcgibson55/3663886483/in/set-72157620514334411

It's almost half way up the first tower then another bigger one inbetwen the
first two towers near the bottom. When I try to fix something it almost
always leads to disaster. Is this something that's easily dealt with? If so
I may sell it and step up to a K100D; one is available in mint condition for
what I consider to be a very good price. I'd like to have a digital SLR body
with image stabilization. My niece has a K100D and it seems very nice.

While looking at bags at Best Buy recently I found a nice Lowepro (all of my
bags are Lowepro) that was being blown out too cheap ($12.99) to pass up so
I bought two even though I wasn't sure what I'd put in one. It's the EX 140
and isn't in this year's catalog. I did some experimentation and found that
I can lay my *ist DL on its back with the kit lens and hood on and the
height is perfect. There's a teeny bit of wiggle room on the bottom but
that's easily remedied. Two of the usual Lowepro Velcro type dividers are
included. There's a front compartment and either my Pentax-FA 28-90mm or
Tamron 75-300mm will fit in there. It's a bit snug with the Tamron but it
fits.

Speaking of the FA 28-90mm I am underwhelmed with mine both optically and
build quality wise. Fortunately I didn't pay very much for it. I need to
figure out how to use my Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm on it. That's a great
lens.

I am contemplating selling some of my film bodies and lenses that don't get
used anymore. I live in a very expensive area and my wife passed away from
cancer two months ago. We just barely got by with two incomes and now
there's only one. The bodies would likely be an SFXn (European version of
the SF1n), Chinese K1000, P30T and a chrome MX (the one referred to
previously) that needs the foam replaced. The lenses might be M-series
primes such as the 135, 150 and 200mm and there might be some nice
aftermarket K/A zooms. I haven't decided exactly what I'll let go of yet.
Actually there is one I'm sure about; the non SMC Takumar bayonet 135mm
f/2.5. I was never happy with its sharpness or contrast. The M-series 135mm
f/3.5 is much better. If there's any interest please write me directly.

Re: PESO - Burn Notice

2009-09-28 Thread Anthony Farr
Burnt forest is never pretty. Sometimes the control burns have to be
done in less than ideal conditions. If It's too hot and dry or windy
the fire burns too hot, not cool and controllable which just skims
away the dried litter on the forest floor and barely singes anything
else. But sometimes ideal conditions never present themselves and the
alternative, to leave the forest unburned and overburdened with fuel
in mid-summer, is just too dangerous.

I've seen and photographed the aftermath of fire that's caused total
destruction to all living matter, to a depth of above a foot. That's
to say, all life in the soil, plus the fire germinated seeds of
potential new life, was incinerated completely. Nothing was left, not
even a stump, and a whole crew of firefighters had also been lost.
Even the ash had been carried away by the convection of the fire,
leaving a bare, black wasteland. That's the sort of fire damage you
never want to see.

That's a nice calm and moody shot of the area you mentioned, and shows
that only the foliage was stripped away by the flames, it must have
been very dry and was removed quickly. Those bare trunks will recover
in months, and the forest was protected from loss. It's unlucky that
you didn't get that uninterrupted vista of green on your visit,
nevertheless you've made a good record of one part of the cycle of
life in the forest.

That looks a lot like Jack Pine, which needs the fire to germinate
seeds for new trees. So ugly as it is the fire was likely a good thing
for the forest.

we are attempting something on a smaller/higher scale next summer
albeit for just three weeks. eight of us are planning to do first the
manali-leh highway (475 km, goes through five high altitude passes four

we've bought the cycles (i've personally bought the cannondale f9 one

My earlier response was presuming that Scott would scan the prints not
having a scanner capable of doing the negs. Of course, if you have a
transparency scanner that's capable, do the negs.

I have the V700 and tested it against the V750 prior to buying it. I
found nothing different about the capabilities between the two unless
you want to wet-scan for damaged large format transparencies.

I don't care much about IS in general. For when it's useful to me,
Panasonic has OIS in the right lenses. I'm very happy with what I get

Re: Shooting street fairs

2009-09-28 Thread paul stenquist
I almost always use a flash when shooting outdoor situations where I
can't control the angle of the light. The 540 works reasonably well in
these situations with no diffuser and in high-speed synch mode. Most
of my playground shots of Grace and her friends are shot with flash
fill. Without it, the shadows would be far too deep. Since the level
of flash doesn't come up to ambient anyway, I just shoot full power in
most situations. For extremely close shots, I'll dial it back a stop.

I saw a lot of people wandering around with external flashes and a
small diffuser (about the size of the flash) on their camera. I
wondered whether it would do any good in that light. It seemed rather
silly to me.

After going through my shots of the White Rats Experimental Morris,
and seeing all of the problems I had with shade and sun, I think that
I may have to try it myself. Unfortunately, that makes the camera a
lot bigger and more obtrusive. I've also had miserable luck with my
AF-540 in any sort of quirky lighting situation.

I noticed another problem I had with shooting the morris dancers. I
cut off their feet in way too many of the shots, shots where there was
plenty of headroom.

I can see that there's a lot to learn about shooting street fairs, and
it'll take a lot of blown shots to figure it out. It does seem that
playing the numbers by shooting a lot of photos is going to be a key
technique. Another would be to shoot a wider angle than would be
nominal, just so you have room for cropping to make up for the lack of
time to carefully aim, or the lack of ability when "shooting from the
chest".

2009-09-28 Thread Larry Colen
I'm starting to look at my photos from the Folsom Street Fair
yesterday.

It does seem that
playing the numbers by shooting a lot of photos is going to be a key
technique. Another would be to shoot a wider angle than would be
nominal, just so you have room for cropping to make up for the lack of
time to carefully aim, or the lack of ability when "shooting from the
chest".

Re: PESO - Burn Notice

2009-09-28 Thread Jack Davis
Nice and very fitting sunset moment. Maybe the fire caused pine cones to burst
thus scattering the seeds of their next generation and sunlight can now reach
the forest floor and new growth flourish
Still sad, I agree.
A bit of a nit, but I'd have to take a look at a slightly lightened foreground.
It needs a somber feel, no question.
Looking forward to your GESO.

One more PESO before I go to a GESO of my trip (since most were pretty
ordinary shots -- I am out of practice not having done photography for eight
months or more).

This is probably the most interesting one I got on my trip.

The Olympic National Forest (Washington) was beautiful, but so was the
Willamette National Forest (Oregon). Until, that is, I got to a heavily burned
out section around sunset. I know some believe fires are good for thinning
out forests, well, most of this was not thinned out but completely burned.

It was very sad.

A day later, while I was in Medford, the whole Rogue River Valley filled
with smoke from a big fire around the Crater Lake area. According to the
Medford newspaper today (online) it is still very smoky and residents are
advised to avoid breathing it. Oregon and California keep getting too little

Thanks for the input, everyone.
I've culled the three weakest shots from the collection. I'm really
very pleased with the rest and I really am pleased with 7d905610,
7d9053613 and 7d905636.

I should note that if you don't have a fairly high end monitor you
really can't see what these shots look like - the shadow detail just
gets lost. When I edited and posted photos from Annsan's computer last
week I almost didn't recognize them when I got home and saw them on my
monitor. I suppose I should make some prints and get a gallery exhibit
or something so everyone can view them on equal terms...

If you do it, pretend you're shooting film. Decide on the number of

to find that you now have to wade through 1200 pictures is good way
