PESO - The Birds and I

2009-11-19 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

Went along to Sculpture by the Sea again this year. Great walk -
interesting sculptures with the usual eclectic mix of the Wonderful, the
Woeful and the Weird.

Here's a shot taken just for the hell of it

http://www.blognow.com.au/PESO/182749/The_Birds_and_I.html

If anyone's interested, here's a GESO of some of the sculptures on
display this year:

http://supera.jalbum.net/Sculpture_by_the_Sea_2009/index.html

The main controversy this year was the sculpture of a naked boy. The
local council demanded that his modesty be restored with a pair of
swimming shorts, however the artist rebelled and removed the shorts
early on the opening day of the exhibition. Details here:

Hi Tim: I don't mind the desaturation in the first picture, but the soft
focus on the guy is a little distracting, though I too like the pose.
Absolutely love the last picture--the group shot--excellent there. Also,
very much like the other pictures in the set. Nice work! Cheers, Christine

This blogpost concludes the serie
http://maritimtim.blogspot.com/2009/11/fn-fast-furious-hst-kick-off-2009-part.html

The light guy gave me a tough time in this last set. The colors where
pointing in all different directions, so I had to play a lot with them
to get acceptable results.

I saw no choice except going for an "artistic" look. If you can't beat
the light man, join him ;-)

The first picture is what really gave me a challenge. I loved the
pose, but he isn't 100% sharp, and the background nearly killed the
shot. I ended up focusing on the guy by turning down the green in the
background. So the background is now close to B&W. I think I also
desaturated the whole scene a bit, but I'm not sure about that.

I added some grain artifacts by using aggressive sharpening in all of
them. It's rock'n roll dude ;-)

took a photo walk in the nearby cemetery.

A gingko in autumn glory:

A small and somewhat tardy maple:

Columns of the cemetery's mansion:

For some reason, I can't get the luminous colors I see in Lightroom to

My second (and last) PESO tonight. Sorry about having more
than one, but I'm excited about getting back a roll of film.
Remember that feeling? It's amazing!

Anyway, I walked into a new coffee shop (not just "new to
me", rather, "just opened") in Toronto's Kensington Market.
He's got a beautiful space and (as you'll see) shows art.
The espresso machine, counter and stools are half-way toward
the back so that looking out the front all one sees is framed
art and the big window onto the street. I won't say any
more, or why liked what I saw; hopefully you'll see and feel
what I did:

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Looks like a nice cool groovy café. But call me cynical, I wonder how long
it will take him to figure out the cost of that empty square footage, and
how much it could earn if he stuck a few tables on it.

Download it and give it a try - I think you may be surprised.

The database doesn't organize photos, it keeps track of where you've
organised them. It helps you find them easily and make different collections
without having to keep duplicates of your pictures.

What are your issues with the database? If you haven't used it, how do you
know it's damnable?

You probably can do the same things in Photoshop, but you can do them far
more easily with a massively better user interface. Remember, the same team
that developed PS have applied their experience of all those years, combined
it with photographers' specific needs, and come up with something tailored
for photographers.

Bob

Maybe I wasn't clear. I did "give it a try" ... on other computers. I
know several Lightroom evangelists.

My issue is all the myriad complaints I've seen about lost catalogs,
bodged up EXIF, lost keywords, scrambled backups ... here and elsewhere.

I already know where my images are, how they're organized, and how to
find what I want when I want it.

Lightroom is a program to fix something I ain't got broke.

You'd get a lot of ticked off students otherwise.

They sell software to students at a discount, MS and others too, figuring

work. If those students couldn't upgrade when they graduate, well, I think you
would have heard the loud yell all over the Net by now. :-)

They just don't count on older students like me (and others) who are

Academic software discounts are a secret only to those who haven't been

I couldn't work without PhotoShop. I do fine organizing my files with bridge
and keyword folders. Don't know if I could do better with Lightroom, but I'm
okay with my current system. However, I do want to give lightroom a try. It
might prove to be a better solution for batch processing.

In regard to CS4, I really like it. Never used two or three, I went straight
from CS to CS4. But I love the clone tool that shows placement, and I'm pleased
with the save for web function that allows retention of exif data. I also like
the numerous photo filter options and the curves functions in the ACR
converter. But I don't know how many of those things are available in CS3.

A word to the wise:
CS4 is a little buggy on XP.
Prone to crashing for no apparent reason with some of the filters I use.
I'm actually back to CS3 for my portrait work because I can't use the
Portraiture filter with CS4 without the program crashing.

I've got CS2 running on another computer with XP, no problems there.
I'm running CS3 on this laptop with Vista, no problems here, although
maxing out memory on this laptop (4GB) would help CS3 run a little faster.

Memory is already maxed out (2GB) on the other computer.

I sorta' figure to forgo CS4 and wait until CS5 comes out before
upgrading.

I hope there will be a CS5 and it won't all get subsumed into Lightroom.

I haven't actually used lightroom. I have looked at it on friends
computers, but every thing I've seen, read and looked at on other
computers makes me believe it doesn't really meet my needs.

Not a bad program, just doesn't do what I want to do as easily as Bridge
and Photoshop already do.

My basic take on Lightroom:

Pros - It's got a database for organizing photos.
You can do things without opening Photoshop

Cons - That damn database.
You can already do those things in Photoshop

CS2 and CS3 are fine. CS4 is a little bitchy.
At the moment I could work without Lightroom, but I would prefer not to have
to, but I couldn't work without Photoshop.

Lightroom has pretty much taken over from bridge for me.
That damned database is damned useful.

That's' not blown out. Tri-X doesn't blow out. the highlights just
roll over. There's detail there if Frank wants to dig it out and show
it, but it may need either multi-pass scanning or even, oh the horror,
hand printing the good ol' fashioned way in a darkroom.

Good to see some nice work coming from the old Leica, Frank.

I know for a fact Adobe does this.

And if I recall correctly, it is true of most MS products as well. The
only one I ever had problems with was Peachtree Accounting, which did make a
separate academic version. But, think about it, really, who's going to want
to go to all the trouble of making different versions? A lot, A LOT, of

But one should always check out each company's site, before buying any

Download it and give it a try - I think you may be surprised.

The database doesn't organize photos, it keeps track of where you've
organised them. It helps you find them easily and make different collections
without having to keep duplicates of your pictures.

What are your issues with the database? If you haven't used it, how do you
know it's damnable?

You probably can do the same things in Photoshop, but you can do them far
more easily with a massively better user interface. Remember, the same team
that developed PS have applied their experience of all those years, combined
it with photographers' specific needs, and come up with something tailored
for photographers.

I sorta' figure to forgo CS4 and wait until CS5 comes out before upgrading.

I'm guessing not.

Dave

Not directly from Adobe, but it's still available ... new copies that
never sold, and used copies.

Amazon's showing 1 new from $1395.00 and 1 used from $649.00

Gotta' wonder sometimes what these people are thinking, 'cause Amazon's
selling new Photoshop CS4 for $634.49 on the same page, plus there's a
sponsored link to "SoftwareKing" for CS4 "Now Only $394".

Upgrade from CS, CS2 or CS3 to CS4 is $199 from Adobe or $189.99 from
Amazon.

There are also academic discounts if you can qualify.

A word to the wise:
CS4 is a little buggy on XP.
Prone to crashing for no apparent reason with some of the filters I use.
I'm actually back to CS3 for my portrait work because I can't use the
Portraiture filter with CS4 without the program crashing.

If you hadn't told me what you'd done for the first shot, I'd have assumed I

Hi All,

How does one determine the total number of shutter clicks/images taken
in K7?

Download and install a program called PhotoMe, which will read all the Exif
data available in a camera file. The actual number of exposure cycles is
tucked away in the Exif data.

GESO - F'n Fast & Furious. Part three

2009-11-19 Thread Tim Øsleby
This blogpost concludes the serie
http://maritimtim.blogspot.com/2009/11/fn-fast-furious-hst-kick-off-2009-part.html

The light guy gave me a tough time in this last set. The colors where
pointing in all different directions, so I had to play a lot with them
to get acceptable results.

I saw no choice except going for an "artistic" look. If you can't beat
the light man, join him ;-)

The first picture is what really gave me a challenge. I loved the
pose, but he isn't 100% sharp, and the background nearly killed the
shot. I ended up focusing on the guy by turning down the green in the
background. So the background is now close to B&W. I think I also
desaturated the whole scene a bit, but I'm not sure about that.

I added some grain artifacts by using aggressive sharpening in all of
them. It's rock'n roll dude ;-)
