on it gave a strong greenish cast to the light, so I color balanced
the fence on that light, which gave the background an interesting
orange cast.

Marnie,

I like this. Raindrops on a leaf are one o' them cliches; raindrops on the
blades of grass surrounding the leaf are a nice twist.

Took some shots of a 5K run at a geek conference in totally horrible

Hi Jack

I couldn't do it before, I saw this one at work and wasn't able to
comment. Amazing shot, great light and composition; what I like the
most is the mix of a contrasty main subject and the hazy background.
PDML book worthy.

I have both the standard hardcover (with dust jacket) and the "image

brighter highlights... but the image wrap book looks *very* classy. I
think it's worth the extra money but I doubt you'd be disappointed

It's 35DegC in the shade outside my back door at Freshwater, so not
really worth more than an hour driving unless you head straight for
the water. Your local Westfield or Hoyts would give you much more
immediate relief from the heat. I'd head for the local RSL club,
myself, for a dose of double cooling aircon on the surface, and a
long, cold ale taken internally :-)

Your post is not clear if your being serious or
sarcastic. I will state what I have been saying
all along, I don't believe the majority of
new vinyl sales in 2009 is dance records as suggested, its
mostly reissues of classic rock, jazz and classical.
I have been follwing the "new" LP market for 20 years
since the low point in '89 or so when everybody
thought vinyl was dead for good. While there are a
lot of dance releases on vinyl that are new for
2009 music, that's not where the bulk of vinyl
sales come from. It's now an expensive audiophile format dominated
by new release reissues of classic recordings
from the latter half of the 30th century.

I likes it, I do. You could bump up the contrast a bit and call it a

Heh. I like that.

The Surly is mine. Picked it up this last Spring and have been making
it heavier ever since. The red one is a late 80s Trek 520. Adam
brought it to a nearby frame builder and had the canti posts moved for
700c wheels, the rear triangle spread and the whole thing repainted.
It's quite nice and it gets a lot of looks. One passing cyclist even
asked if it was a custom frame.

IMHO, the Blurb dust jacket looks nicer initially, but the image-wrap is
clearly more durable. If they offered a version with dust jacket wrapped around
an image wrap, I would take that in a heartbeat! As it is, none of the several
Blurb books I have purchased for self and for gifts (own work and PDML Annual)
have had the dust jacket option.

Re: PESO - The Second Rain

I agree with you, Marnie..it is nice lighting. I understand the Sierra got a
good amount of snow and the ski resorts are all puckered for a Thanksgiving
holiday crowed. The valley received nothing like what was enthusiastically
predicted. Only about 1/4 of a drippy inch.

Yes, even though California has hit the "rainy season" we remain

Nothing special, I just wanted to celebrate the rain and I liked the

OT GESO - Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers

I love seeing young bands get up, have a go, and clearly have a lot of

Cuthbert had the most people I've ever seen on the Annandale stage. At
one time there were a dozen, along with giant balloons, and sing-along
placards. Very entertaining

Fun spot for Bay area folks, Seaport Blvd, Redwood City

2009-11-21 Thread Larry Colen
On my way up to Friday Night Blues last night, I saw a sign at an AM/
PM that made me wonder WTF they were thinking, I hope that you'll get
a chuckle out of it too:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4123026770/in/set-72157622849212838/

Years ago, I used to work at the end of Seaport Blvd (what Woodside Rd/
hwy 84 turns into at 101), and would frequently take my camera for a
walk out on the levies overlooking the salt ponds. I've been curious
about shooting it at night for a while and last night thought that I'd
just stop for a few minutes, nothing serious, just a few test shots.
It's funny how I still fall for some of the same old lies.

Despite my intent to just shoot a few test shots and come back at a
more convenient time, if they worked out, I did manage to get a few
shots that I don't think entirely suck:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622724969347/

I wanted to mention this in case any of the Bay Area folks were
looking for a place to shoot. The area seems to be full of
opportunities, especially since there is also some heavy industry and
a couple of harbors in the neighborhood. I left about 5AM, but I
suspect that it would be a great place to shoot from at sunrise. I
know that's when Godfrey likes to go for his daily walk, but I was too
tired to stay up that late.

I shot these from the business complex at the end of the road. There
was a guard at the entrance when I came in who asked what I was doing,
when I said "photography" he said "Cool! have fun" and jotted down my
license plate number.

Blurb.com makes it impossible to sell the same book with both standard
and Premium Paper :( For a while I had a separate "book" listed for
just the Premium version, but orders for the more expensive book
dropped off and referencing 2 URL's was suboptimal so I removed it.

I've just adjusted the settings so that you can buy the Permium Paper
version from Blurb. The standard version can be ordered through my web
site (I keep some of the paperback on hand at all times).

Anyway, the official Blurb page should now show Premium Paper.

Re: PESO - Wisteria

2009-11-21 Thread Jack Davis
Like it, Rick!! I know your chosen angle precludes your doing much about this,
but I kind of a wish the upper windows would go away. Cropping without
eliminating the cornice and/or creating a distracting angle at the top would be
pretty much beyond me. That, of course, doesn't mean it can't be done.

The Pine Creek Rail Trail is a wonderful LSD ride. We left Wellsboro,
PA on Saturday, November 14th and finished up mid-afternoon the next
day in Jersey Shore, PA. 62-ish miles, with lots of site seeing,
bullshitting and 5mph ambling. Camped at Black Walnut Bottom, just
like last year. Saw bears. Didn't bother to take any pictures until
Sunday.

Boris, you could also try Googling around the web, though it might take
some finesse. I managed to find free, high detail maps of Bulgaria on

Look for the "PDML Photo Annual" section and you'll find links to
