Re: AF 540 FGZ - I am totally confused -- need help from K7+AF540FGZ owners

2009-12-07 Thread AlunFoto
I was about to suggest the same as Stig for LCD lighting. :-)

There's really only one way to check for preflash. Do a couple of
shots with the camera away from your face.

Another test you could do is to shoot a series of the same scene at
different apertures. If the histogram creeps gradually down into
shadow as you stop down, the flash delivers the same output regardless
of camera setting and is broken.

Btw, when my flash was faulty, it refused to do P-TTL at one
particular zoom setting, but working almost as expected (slight
underexposure) at other zoom settings. Took some testing to figure
that one out... Don't give up until you've made heads and tails of
what goes on, Igor! :-)

Last weekend (the weekend of the ram) when my friend and I were driving out
to the dales through similar light to Christine's picture we saw the end of
a rainbow. Neither of us had ever since this before. I regret to inform the

I didn't have the chance to photograph it.

Simplify, simplify, eh? :-)

The breaking wave is indeed the wake of the boat, but accentuated by
quite strong winds. The white splash is indeed dominating, and do take
up more real estate than do the bird. It could be dealt with by a bit
of cropping when the intention is to show the bird only. However, I
had a point to make about K-7 autofocus too, which wouldn't come
across as easily if the waves appeared to be outside the area covered
by AF sensors.

PESO x2: Out-takes

2009-12-07 Thread David Mann
Here are a couple of photos that I really wanted to pick for the galleries but
they didn't quite work out.

Notice the state of the fence in this one. Behind it is a near-vertical drop
of about 200 metres. I was disappointed about the blurred rider but the
background is a bit overexposed as well. When I first saw it on the camera
screen I though I'd nailed a great shot :(

Here's the first photo from the first gallery for comparison. The background
turned out a lot better at the expense of the foreground needing some careful
work in Photoshop. I still had to crop out most of the blown-out sky but I
liked the background so much I left it as a panorama even though I don't like
the riders being in the centre. I also wanted to show that noone is in front
of these guys (they were the race leaders, by quite a good margin as you can
see).

Now that I look at it again I could probably lift the curves a little more.

I'll also note that due to the roads not being closed, the safety rules
theoretically forbid the riders from crossing the centre line. Only when the
marshals are watching, of course. But I did make a point of cutting out any
photo that shows a recognisable rider breaching the rule.

Here's another out-take. I think it needed a slightly slower shutter speed.
Warning, it might induce headaches :) I did play around with doing a B&W
version but didn't really have the time to see it through.

Cheers,
Dave

I suspect the problem is with your flash. The metering should be fine as long
as you're within range. Remember though that range is greatly dependent on the
size of the room and the color of the walls.

Re: AF 540 FGZ - I am totally confused -- need help from K7+AF540FGZ owners

2009-12-07 Thread Thibouille
The LCD behavior is normal, culprit being the k7 custom settings.
There should be a preflash in all modes but X afaik. If you see the
flash light in your viewfinder, it is the preflash.

Do you still have your istDS? Trying the 540fgz on the DS should tell
you what part is malfunctioning.

Jostein,
The white water really helps that shot.
It almost makes it into a 'Surfer Bird' - a line from an old song.
I'd compare it to Mark Dimalanta surfer photo.

Re: GESO x2: Long Bays Classic

2009-12-07 Thread John Sessoms

From: David Mann

If you find a glue that actually works, post it here. I could never
find one and always eventually end up buying replacement hoods.

The first time I broke it, I think I just used ordinary super glue
and it held for a few years until I fell on it. Last time I used a
different glue that I thought would hold better.

I had one of those "petal" shape bayonet style hoods for a 28-70 zoom.
It snapped across one of the narrow points. Wouldn't grip afterward.

I tried super-glue, Duco cement, Gorilla Glue, instant epoxy and the
kind of epoxy you have to let dry overnight. The best result I got was
from the dry overnight epoxy, and that wouldn't hold more than a couple
of days.

The glue joint was stretched apart every time I mounted the hood, and
eventually would fail.

I even tried epoxying it and then wrapping the hood in gaffers tape
(trimmed to match the contour of the "petal"), which did last a little
longer than just epoxy alone.

But gaffers tape had just enough stretch, the glue joint could pop again
and it just wouldn't stay on.

If I'd had any military commo wire around, I might have tried drilling
tiny holes either side of the break and looping one of the steel strands
from the commo wire across the break several times and epoxying it in
place to see if that might keep it from popping open again.

Luckily, I found a spare hood of the correct model in a junk parts bin
at my local camera store. Bought that to replace the broken one.

My current reading. Haven't quite got to the point where the crew got

I started on the book before the trip began, and found it tough reading.
When I picked it up again, while crossing the Drake passage on the

Lightroom question, synchronizing camera clocks

2009-12-07 Thread Larry Colen
I was shooting with both bodies this weekend, particularly during
dance contests when I had the FA31 on one body and the 18-250 on the
other.

Unfortunately, the clocks in the two cameras were out of sync by 5
minutes, so sorting by capture time almost, but doesn't quite, work
right. I don't think so, I wasn't able to find it in the spitzer &
resnick book, but is there a way to select a group of pictures and say
"correct the capture time of all of these by 5 minutes"?

In other news, my Sigma 20/1.8 just showed up a few minutes ago. I
haven't had a chance to take it for a test shoot, but it looks good.
I put it on a 35mm bodies and at a first glance, it doesn't seem to
vignette too badly either.

If I'd had any military commo wire around, I might have tried drilling

from the commo wire across the break several times and epoxying it in
place to see if that might keep it from popping open again.

Maybe instead of gaffer's tape, use one of those stainless steel "pull

exhaust systems. The trick is pulling it tight enough to stop the hood
flexing the glue joint, but not pulling it too tight.

In Lightroom, the "Metadata->Edit Capture Time..." command should do
exactly what you want. There's also an option in the Catalog
Preferences, Metadata tab, to "write date or time changes into
proprietary raw files" if you want to punch it directly into the
original RAW files too.

Thanks a bunch. If my cameras were exactly five hours out of sync,
rather than five minutes, it would do exactly what I want.

Unfortunately it seems that I have the choice of changing all of the
files to the same time, or by an integer number of hours, not tweaking
the files in one camera by five minutes so that a capture time sort
works right.

Well, sure, but that one isn't about rocks, unless you want to regard
metallic uranium as a rock.

The one I was thinking of was :Annals of the Former World:, which
combines :Basin and Range:, :In Suspect Terrain:, :Rising From the
Plains:, :Assembling California:, and :Crossing the Craton: into a
single volume. It is not entirely about rocks -- stories about people
keep intruding -- but it's significantly about rocks and it won a
Pulitzer, so several someones must have thought it was interesting.

I think you might have written that one off a bit too soon. I think the
blurred rider adds a bit of action to the image and the contrast in the
background can be boosted without much effort in Photoshop. Not much
you can do about the sky - other than replace it with a new one - if you

As soon as I saw the subject line I thought of Julie Andrews (and that's
not something I'm comfortable owning up to). But obviously, you thought
the same thing.

Anyway - great light in the colour images and not too orange by any
means.

Not sure about the B/W one. It loses a bit of detail in the lower right
and ends up a bit cluttered. I definitely prefer the colour version.
