That's a great blog post. Not sure how you're going to top that on the rest of the trip! :-) I've added the RSS feed to Sage (the feed reader add-on to Firefox that I use) so I'll be able to keep tabs on your progress. Keep the posts coming, by the way. Writing the blog on our recent trip across Oz and back has proved to be a great record of the trip. I keep referring back to it even several months after completing it. It doesn't really matter if no one else ever reads it! You need the school principal's permission to photograph kids at school. Interestingly, legally, the principal does not need to get parent permission for kids to be photographed at school, though school principals often say they do, but according to Kobre, the courts do not require parental permission to take pictures of children in schools. Mine with 500m lens, 300mm lens, body, flash etc weight 15kg. Oops. I had to buy a special bag just for the 500/4... Interesting. I think some check more than others, especially long distance like Australia. I always go on the maxim that if it looks heavy, it *is* heavy. When I went through check-in with my Lowepro Stealth backpack to America once, it was loaded to the gun'ls with kit and I estimated about 30 lbs. I had it draped casually over one shoulder for the whole time - it damn near killed me but the act of putting it down and picking it up would have aroused suspicion as that was a two- handed job. It worked. Another ploy that I use when working and traveling with someone else (not family) is we check-in separately while one waits out of view of check-in with the hand luggage, and then vice-versa. Check-in staff are often over-zealous newbies who don't miss a trick. Problem is they are often ill-advised under exceptional circumstances. On a recent trip to Rome, check-in staff caused a fracas because my TV camera in it's carry-on bag was too big for carry-on size. Fine I said, I'll check the bag and carry the camera. The camera in itself is not a piece of luggage, it's a camera, and so there is no specified maximum size for carrying on a camera. Apparently when it's in the bag, then it's an issue, although never had this problem before. Zillions of TV crews travel daily around the world carrying the same gear. The newby check-in girl had not come across this. The duty manager was called and a line formed behind us (we had not deployed our separate check-in routine, natch) but after numerous walky-talky exchanges, it was deemed better to carry the camera in the soft case for safety (other passengers as well as the camera's). We were told that security clearance going air- side would be the final determination, and if it was not okay with them, then the bag went separately. At security clearance the first guard said no problem. Oh we get these crews all the time with big cameras, yeah no problem go straight through. The duty manager apologised. Yet if we'd used our separate check-in procedure, we would have saved 30 minutes and had the same result. Chicago Photowalk--2 options
Hi Everyone: Photowalk Option #1--we'd probably have to do this one on Saturday--we couldn't do the galleries on a Sunday. Everyone meets at Chicago ave Wells under the Brown Line El tracks. We head straight-a-way to both the Stephen Daiter Gallery ( http://www.stephendaitergallery.com/ ) and Catherine Edelman Gallery ( http://www.edelmangallery.com/ ). Darrel I have a good friend working at the Daiter Gallery. I'll tell him we might come by, maybe he'll give us a special look-see around the place. NO PROMISES, but I will let him know we're coming. (Chicago Gallery Guide http://art-collecting.com/galleries_il_chicago.htm ). Then we head east on Chicago ave. toward Michigan ave--see the Water Tower, tramp clown around the square, walk over to stare at the John Hancock, or go up to the top--the view is great!!!. After nudging everyone's vertigo to the forefront, we head north and slightly west by way of Rush Oak streets heading towards Division and State streets. We tramp, clown, make beautiful pictures, drink, eat, shop all along the way. Folks could then catch the Red Line at Clark Division to head home or to a brothel of their choice if they've discovered where one is. This option's a bit of a walk, but very doable. Our Mountain Goat will probably complain about it's ease, but the rest of us will feel well walked by end of day! Photowalk Option # 2 We all meet at the Old Town Ale House on North ave ( http://www.oldtownalehouse.net/ there's music at this site. don't yell at me). We all start with a quickie: a shot, a beer, and a pretzel, then head east on North ave, ending up at North ave Beach. We tramp clown around, see the North Ave boat house, maybe walk to Oak street beach, walk back, take pictures of each other. If the volleyball players are out, you can gaze at nearly naked dudes and dudettes. We then head west on North Ave, maybe stop at the Chicago Historical Society ( http://www.chicagohs.org/ ), but continue on with purpose to North Wells, the heart of Old Town, (which isn't the Old Town I grew up with, but it's still fun), where we tramp clown, take pictures, drink, eat, shop more if you like. I'll be posting more photo options, but there's time for that. If you want me to try and work in something you want to see in a photowalk option, just let me know. I'll give it a shot. Cheers, Christine P.S. I'd really like to do a PDML group shot on the beach somewhere.
