Budgetary cuts have forced Canada's legendary Royal Mounted
Police Corps to experiment with new ways to deter criminal
activity. While he lacks the mobility and horsemanship of
the traditional Mountie, lower maintenance costs and
affordable replacement are just what's called for in these
 difficult economic times:

We've tried similar experiments over here, but they've had a few teething

GESO Vita

2009-12-28 Thread Larry Colen

I've realized two things tonight:

You folks are a bad influence.
Photographing bicycles is difficult.

I've had this bike, in various incarnations, since the summer of '79
when I pulled the frame out of a friend's basement. I could write a
small book about all the things I've done with, and to, it.

The highlight was probably when I rode the Davis Double Century on it
in May of '81, although the previous fall I did ride a metric double
century on it, without a front derailleur, or for that matter any
training since the DC the previous May. There have been several times
that I have decided that it was no longer worth fixing the bike up,
and that I should just buy a new bike. I only bought a new bike once,
but I always seem to find some excuse to get her back on the road.

The frame is a Legnano. An Italian company that at one point went out
of business sometime in the late sixties. It may have been since
resurrected, but I'm fairly sure that the frame is somewhere between
40 and 50 years old. You may note a big, rusty, bolt at the
intersection of the seat tube and the top tube. Legnano had a very
clever, for Italian values of clever, method of tightening down the
seat. I've never owned the proper clamp widget, so I kluged something
up that more or less works.

I tried several lighting setups. I ended up with the WL10,000 studio
strobe fairly high up, shooting through an umbrella. I tried various
shots with my Sigma 20, FA31 and DFA50/2.8.

I spent Christmas in Yorkshire. We had snow on the ground for
the first time in many years and it looked very Dickensian.
On Christmas morning I went for a walk on Christchurch Stray,
just by my mother's house, and the local church just after
the morning service (which I missed, for the 52nd year in a row...).

Being full of joy I have decided to relax my normally
Talibanic rule of not mucking about with pictures, and
slapped on a bit of Aged Photo preset, to up the Dickens quotient.

I almost asked the very same question, until I realized that this is a close-up

Wanted to. And so I waited and waited and waited (for either prices
to go down or my money to go up). But can't afford it... at least
not with the lenses I'd like to couple it with. Maybe next year. For
now, I just thought I'd try something else (again, in conjunction
with keeping my K10D). I've used pentax for over 15 years (joined
pdml in '01 I think) and have zero experience with canon or nikon.
And so I'm kinda feeling like that guy who married his first
girlfriend / high school sweetheart. Perhaps a little more exposure
will teach me to appreciate my Pentax stuff... or perhaps this is
goodbye. Only time will tell.

I think that you will find that there is no perfect solution. Each
family of equipment has its own strengths and weaknesses, so rather
than replacing your pentax gear, you should consider supplementing it
with something that complements its strengths.

technically I'm *adding* a system. In terms of parting with

if he has a 1 GB or 2 GB card slouching about, he could always test

 Hi all
My recently 'converted to Pentax by yours truly' neighbor is having
troubles with his K-7. Perhaps one of you can help out: he has a
SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 8 GB card and with fw 1.0 recording would
stop after about 45 to 55 secs, with fw 1.02 it pauses after about
1:15 to 1:25 to write buffer to card and then resumes. Could this be a
 case of wrong card?

K-7 mode dial (was: video SDHC write) issue

2009-12-28 Thread eckinator
Thank you everyone for your input; there is/was also one other issue
(it is yet to be seen whether or not fw update 1.0 to 1.02 fixed it) -
the mode dial would sometimes/often produce randomly wrong results,
i.e. you could turn it to mode x and it would set the camera to mode z
with no apparent pattern - does that ring a bell with anyone
